Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Memorial Day originated years after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War's fallen by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on 30 May 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On 5 May 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that: The 30th of May, 1868, is designed for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. During the first celebration of Decoration Day, 5,000 participants helped decorate the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate Soldiers buried in the cemetery. In 1966, the federal government, under the

direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day because the two had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of Soldiers with flowers and flags. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. On Thursday, 26 May through Monday, 30 May, the Community Recreation Division of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) will observe Memorial Day by planning the PACWIDE Tournament and Community Carnival. The PACWIDE Tournament and Community Carnival is a five day event featuring fun for the entire USAG Yongsan Community! The PACWIDE Tournament and Community Carnival will have a Salute to Retirees, the Pacific Wide Softball Tournament, and a community festival complete with an old fashioned American block party, music, Pet Show, Auto Show, and plenty of carnival games. Think you have the pipes to win? Enter the karaoke contest! Think your moves are the best? Show us in the dance competition. Are you just hungry for some barbecue? The PACWIDE Tournament and Community Carnival has it all! Five days of food, fun and entertainment for everyone. Military Spouse Appreciation Month “Wake Up America”
In 1984, President Ronald Regan signed a proclamation officially recognizing Military Spouse Day. On Friday, 6 May 2011, the Army Community Service will have the Military Spouse Appreciation Day Ceremony at the Main Post Club from 0900-1200. The ceremony will salute the accomplishments and the sacrifices made by the military spouse and the national theme for this day is “Wake Up America”. USAG Yongsan will pay tribute to military spouses by acknowledging that military spouses are the backbone of Families who support our Soldiers. Spouses are essential to the strength of the nation. For more than 236 years, spouses have supported their Soldiers on the field and on the home front. In the 19th century, the Army protected settlers moving west. Army spouses braved the journey and life on the frontier to be with the Soldiers. When relocating, they rode ox- or horse-drawn carts and wagons and, sometimes, even walked. They confronted harsh climate, disease, and st attack while coping with military life. Today's Army spouses still confront many challenges. In the 21 century, the Army has a global presence in eighty countries. The Army is committed to improving Family readiness through better funding of programs, better health care, housing, schools, youth services, childcare, education and employment opportunities. Army spouses are community leaders, careerists, mothers, fathers, and Soldiers. It is understood that at times, spouses miss out on the opportunity to build careers because they move around so much to be with their loved ones. The Military Spouse Appreciation Ceremony will have the Civilian Personnel Advisory Center (CPAC) present so for those spouses who seek employment, CPAC will be there to inform you of available opportunities. Employment opportunities can also be found at websites like www.cpol.army.mil, www.secro-na.com or www.usajobs.com. The provided websites will list any employment opportunities available at any location.

Military Spouse Appreciation Month
Spouses routinely put the welfare of their Soldier, Family and nation above their own. After almost a decade of war and multiple deployments, our Active, Army Reserve, and National Guard spouses unconditionally continue to support America's Army. The strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their Families. “It's really hard being in a military family. I think it's harder for my mom because since she's a U.S. Army Soldier, she always has to leave me, my brothers, and my dad behind. Sure, she gets to meet new people and experience different cultures but I know she'd rather be with her family so we follow her. I just want my mom to know that wherever she goes, we'll be right behind her with nothing but love and support.” –Diamond Davis, 11th grader from Seoul American High School “My mother was very much aware of what she was getting herself into when she married my father. He was going to join the military and since marriage, she has always been his backbone. My mom makes it her duty, as a military spouse, to be with my father every step or move he makes. When he joined the military, she did too. Having my father in the military has made my parents closer than most. If they can get through the hardships of this unstable life, they can get through anything. As a whole, my family has adjusted well to this lifestyle. At times, I want to complain but I just look to my mother and try to grasp on to her impeccable strength. I know she wouldn't trade her life for anything.” – Alayna Pounds, 12th grader from Seoul American high School Thank you to all of our military spouses for your countless contributions and sacrifices!

Expected competitors to participate in the nonverbal performance come from ten or more countries to perform in the nonverbal performances. The event will be held for six days starting Thursday, 5 May to Tuesday, 10 May inYeouido Hangang Park and downtown Seoul. The Han River will be the focal point for the entire event with the main stage located by the Han River Basin. The main programs include artistic fireworks, village of big top theaters, parades, farm experience in the city, picnic on the bridge, tossing coins for love, martial arts, performance workshops, and more than two hundred non-verbal performance and hundreds of street performances. The Nonverbal Open Contest is a great chance for blooming amateur artists to test their talent in two categories: Band Music and Nonverbal Performance. Ten finalists in each category will compete on the main stage and the winning team will receive a cash prize. The Performance Participation Program invites Seoul citizens to join performance teams from Spain, Australia and Korea. The lucky participants will perform air acrobatics, take part in the parade, and appear in nonverbal performances by leading performance groups from both Korea and other countries.
In addition, the Hi Seoul Festival 2011 is looking for 400 volunteers to promote the festival with their dynamic talents and passion. The volunteers will be selected upon close review of their qualifications in the relevant fields, namely, Festival Support Personnel, Interpretation, and Public Relations and Marketing, and assigned to their corresponding positions to carry out various support assignments. The K-16 Community Activities Center is offering a trip to Hi Seoul Festival on Saturday, 7 May. Patrons can sign up at either Moyer CAC or K-16 CAC for the trip. The deadline to sign-up is 4 May. Transportation costs $5.00 per person and admission is free. Patrons are invited to bring snacks, bagged lunch or spending money (Korean Won) for the event. On the day of the trip, the bus will depart K-16 CAC at 1100 to arrive at Moyer CAC and depart at 1200. The bus will leave Yoeuido at 1800 and arrive to Moyer CAC at 1900 and then return to K-16 CAC at 2000. Fitness News... What’s all this talk about BMR?
N
o, BMR is not another military acronym to remember. However, BMR, Basal Metabolic Rate, is the amount of calories that your body burns at rest. Yes, that’s right folks. BMR is how many calories your body would burn if you decided to sit on the couch all day.
FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR BMR: When it comes to determining your BMR, there are four constant factors involved, which include: 1. Age 2. Gender 3. Height 4. Weight (EXAMPLE) AGE: 28, GENDER: M, HT: 5’10”, WT: 210lbs BMR Calculation: 2073; which means at rest, their body burns 2073 calories a day without any physical activity. Now, lets look at the same factors, but for a female; their BMR would equal 1760 calories.
THINGS TO CONSIDER IN REGARDS TO BMR: It is the unfortunate truth ladies however, given the example above, men do burn more calories. WHY? Men have the ability to burn calories at a higher rate due to growth hormones and testosterone levels. Another thing to consider is body size: a muscular/lean individual will burn more calories than an individual who has more fat mass.
HOW TO MANIPULATE YOUR BMR: As I have mentioned before, your BMR is only what your body is factored to burn while at rest. Factors that can increase your burn rate include: 1. Increase physical activity; the more active you are the more calories your body will burn. 2. Incorporate strength training into your routine; muscle is believed to burn 3x more calories than fat. WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW YOUR BURN RATE: Having an idea of how many calories your body is estimated to burn per day is important when it comes to trying to lose and/or gain weight. Knowing your burn rate can give you baseline information and allow you to achieve results. As always, it is important to understand that a healthy plan of action is one that includes healthy dieting, regular physical activity and a healthy mindset. If you would like to have your BMR calculated and/or have a fitness assessment conducted, contact Edward Motley, Fitness Coordinator for USAG Yongsan.

elcome to the Yongsan Child Development Center! We Seek to provide a safe, healthy,
caring, and learning environment for the children in our care. We devote each moment of our day to the development of an environment conducive to learning. Each child is challenged to reach his or her fullest development of the whole child. We believe that children learn by first-hand experiences, by becoming involved in activities, and by playing. Play aids growth; it provides an imaginary world where children can master events that happen and provides a basis for physical development. Play is a way of learning adult roles; it is vital and essential to the survival of all humans.
C
hildcare fees are determined by the Total Family income. We provide hourly care and it is offered on a space available basis. Partday preschool is offered in conjunction with the school year for children ages 35. Parents are encouraged to participate and become actively involved in all aspects of the program. Parent Advisory Meetings are held monthly at the CDC on the last Wednesday of the month at 1145. Bring your lunch, we'd love to see you there! A CHILD'S WORK...IS HIS/HER PLAY!
O
ur curriculum includes daily creative learning activities, dramatic play, cooking experiences, literacy skills, special visitors, and highenergy motor skill development.
CDC is DoD-certified and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Yongsan Family Child Care (FCC) Program Army Family Child Care (FCC) Homes are available on Yongsan as well as Hannam Village which provides quality childcare from trained childcare providers that work as independent contractors for CYS Services. Learning activities are designed to support the natural development of children and include individual and small group experiences. If you are interested in becoming a FCC provider by providing child care in your government quarters, please contact Ms. Stephanie Wallace for an application information.
