SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) Saturday, May 8 & 15

The Joint Security Area (JSA)

The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters in diameter. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards assinated two United Nations Command officers with axes on August 18, 1976. Following the “Ax-murder incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA. That marking system continues today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with 126, 1 meter-high white stakes along the boundary line at 10-meter intervals. In the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side maintains six guard posts in the JSA. No more than 35 armed guards can be present on either side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. Many political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA. DMZ Third Tunnel

The 3rd Tunnel was discovered just 52 km away from Seoul, in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. The tunnel is 1,635m in length, 2m in width, and 2m in height. Also, it is large enough for an army of 30,000 fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within one hour. This is the largest tunnel discovered to date, indicating how strong a potential North Korean plot to invade Seoul was at that time.

Korea closest at hand. Propaganda village and North Korean farmland are located just ahead. Part of the city area of Gaeseong, Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Seong can be seen through a telescope. - Y ou must carry your passport or ID card on tour day. - D o not touch any equipment such as microphones or flags belonging to the communist side. - D o not speak with, make any gesture toward or in any way approach or respond to personnel from the other side. - R ipped jeans, sleeveless shirts, mini skirts, shorts, military clothing, or sandals (slippers) are not permitted in the tour area. - S haggy or unkempt hair is not allowed. - C hildren under 10 years of age are not permitted on this tour.

Jeju Island Trip

June 18 - 20 Twin room: $399 Single room: $469

Jeju Island is one of the nine provinces of Korea and it is only 1 hour from Seoul by air. As a result of its isolated location and romantic tropical image, Jeju-do has become a favorite retreat with honeymooners and tourists. The island has a mild marine climate with four distinct seasons and an average yearly temperature of 15°C (60°F). In the summer, temperatures range from 22°C (72°F) to 26°C (80°F). Seongsan il Chulbong, or Sunrise peak, is one of 360 parasitic volcanoes that dot the island. Scaling up a steep slope, the trail takes you to the western edge of the crater. A climb up this narrow trail rewards the climber with a most spectacular view, especially at sunrise. You will also get a chance to visit Sangumburi Crater, one of the three major craters on the island, the others being Baengnokdam lake at the summit of Mt. Hallasan and Sunrise Peak at Seongsanpo. Sangumburi Crater is about 2km in circumference. It is home to some 420 different species of subtropical, temperate and alpine flowering plants and is known by botanists as a “floral treasure house.” It is best viewed in summer or fall. On this tour you will also see Oedolgae, a high outcropping created by a volcanic eruption 1.5 million years ago. Legend has it that during the later Goryeo dynasty, General Choe Yeong disguised the rock to appear like a giant military general to scare off Mongolian soldiers lurking on Beomseom Islet. Jeongbang Falls are the only falls in Asia that drop directly to the sea and is of the three most famous on Jeju-do Island, along with Cheonjiyeon and Cheongjeyeon falls. Tour price includes: round-trip airfare, transportation to and from Jeju Airport to a two-night stay at a 3.5 star hotel, two hotel breakfasts ( Jun 19-20), two lunches ( Jun 18 & 20), one half-day tour ( Jun 18 & 20), one full day at leisure ( Jun 19). Register today at your nearest Warrior Country Community Activity Center during the period of May 3 - 25, Payments must be received by Tuesday, May 25.

LUAU & ROCK

May Festival Saturday, May 22 from 11 a.m. ~ 11:30 p.m.

Story by Frank A. De Silva “May Day” may be “Lei Day” in Hawaii, but Saturday, May 22 is “May Festival, Luau and Rock Day” at Camp Casey’s Gateway Park. Everyone, young and old alike, are invited to join in the fun that begins at 11 a.m. and continues until 11 p.m. “This is going to be a major recreation and entertainment event for our community,” says Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR) Special Events Coordinator Marenzo “Mozah” Domingo. “We have so many outstanding activities planned throughout the day, starting with a Yard Sale, EEO exhibits, DJ music, free food sampling and more at 11 a.m., culminating in the afternoon with live entertainment, contests, craft booths and an Asian/ Pacific-themed luau, complete with a real imu (underground oven) demonstration where we’ll prepare delicious kalua pig, a Hawaiian favorite,” Domingo says. In keeping with the “Luau” part of the festivities, everyone who purchases a buffet meal will receive a free lei and have their picture taken with some of our Polynesian Entertainers, who will also perform onsite later in the evening. “Other than the stage entertainment, there’ll also be a variety of Asian-Pacific dishes available at the Luau Village. Visitors can stroll through a dozen or so Arts & Crafts booths where they can create and keep 26

Pear Blossom Cottages

“A home away from home” The Pear Blossom Cottages (PBCs) are unique to the USAG Red Cloud communities. For those Family members joining in the activities, they are truly “a home away from home.” They are located within the USAG Red Cloud community, to include, Camp Casey and Camp Stanley, with each having their own separate “personalities” gleaned from the managers and Families alike. The cottages offer a wide variety of activities as well as being a place to just sit and relax, watch a movie or TV, do your laundry or enjoy spirited conversations with your fellow patrons. They are an outstanding way for Family members, far from home, to experience a little bit of “America” while living in Korea. For those whose original home is not the US, they’re a great place to learn American lifestyles and practice improving their English. Many of the people spending time at the PBCs find that they are a very good location to meet new people and create strong bonds of friendship among other spouses, both American and foreign born alike. Some have even said, “friends made at the PBC have become family.” Others state, “if it wasn’t for the PBC, and friendships made at the PBC, I would have no one else to share the experience of living in Korea with besides my Soldier spouse, who is frequently in the field for exercises, TDY or working long hours.” PBCs haven’t always been around. Not until Mrs. Janice Woodall (the wife of former commanding general of 2nd Infantry Division, MG Jack Woodall) noticed many non-command sponsored and foreign-born spouses without a place to go during the duty day - taking showers with their children in the gyms and lounging in building lobbies. Prior to 2009, most Soldiers served unaccompanied tours. However, that didn’t mean that there were no Families in Area I. Mrs. Woodall recognized the need for a safe and comfortable gathering place for the many Families that were here without command sponsorship. She saw that they needed a place to be able to cook, bathe and have a place to go, so she became instrumental in the development of the PBCs, the first of which opened at Camp Casey in February 1989. Even though they were originally developed for non-command sponsored Families, they are open to ID card holding Family members. I’m sure she would be proud to see that Families are still very grateful for this wonderful resource. The PBCs are more than a home away from home, they offer workshops in candle making, flower arrangement, soap making and help with cultural adaptation. Each Cottage holds a variety of classes: arts and crafts, jewelry 50

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and FMWR Magazine

making, beading, multicultural cooking classes, sewing classes and quilting. Each PBC goes on at least one cultural exploration trip - sometimes only as far as Uijeongbu, but often to Seoul or even farther. Cottage families tour the local area to experience traditional Korean food, shopping in local markets, Dongdaemun, Namdaemun and underground shopping areas in Seoul. PBCs conduct educational trips to explore the history of Korea thru places like the DMZ, Folk Villages, War Memorial Museum, Gyeongbokgung Palace and other tourist attractions, amusement parks like Lotte World, Seoul Grand Park and Everland. Want to work on your resume or keep in touch with family and friends? Every PBC has several computers for use. PBCs give the opportunity to enhance self-reliance through classes on personal financial management, relationship building, parenting, stress and anger management. Have a new baby or a toddler? There are playgroups and other activities for you and your child. Want to learn about your hair and how to take care of it or find a new style? Learn basic Korean? Maybe even exercise? Save money on your utilities? Do your laundry for free while your children play. All of this and many more events take place at the cottages on a regular basis. Stop by and pick up a schedule to see what is being offered this month. As we welcome spring and the month of May, we need to remember Janice Woodall, a military spouse whose initiative in establishing the PBCs is still making an impact on military Families to this day. During May we also will be recognizing all military spouses in Area I for their dedication in supporting their Soldier and helping to make the community a better place for everyone. May 7 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Join your local PBC in this celebration. For more information, call your local Pear Blossom Cottage.
