Got a Question? Go to Facebook! Some people hate it and refuse to even consider its use. Others considered it the best thing since sliced bread. Love it or hate it, Facebook has become a major method of instant communications and a “daily, virtual Town Hall” according to USAG-Humphreys Commander Col. Joe Moore. The official USAG-Humphreys Facebook page, administered by Steve Hoover in Public Affairs, has turned into a reliable source for instant information such as road conditions, schedule changes and news that impacts the Community. Family & MWR also makes extensive use of the USAG-Humphreys Facebook page, answering questions and posting information. But FMWR Marketing also has a Facebook page where many photos of special FMWR events are posted and shared with the Community. (facebook.com/HumphreysMarketing) Outdoor Rec, Bowling, Youth Sports, Playgroup, Sports & Fitness, Camp Humphreys Teens and Camp Humphreys BOSS also have Facebook pages to distributed information. And there are many other Facebook pages designed for special interest groups within the Community. Following is a list of some Facebook groups you might be interested in exploring: Interested in Different Places to Eat? There’s a Facebook site called “Where to Eat in South Korea” that provides real reviews and photos of various restaurants throughout the local area. Started by two Camp Humphreys women, it’s very useful -- facebook.com/groups/279239908801244/ Tips on Traveling in Korea and Throughout Asia Another page started at Humphreys, this one provides first-person experiences about places to visit in Korea and throughout Asia. You can find out where to stay and what to see -- http://www.facebook.com/groups/151706248224612/ Catching a Free Flight from Osan It’s possible to catch a free flight to Japan, Okinawa or even the States on Space-A Travel from Osan. Leap Day Special for Mings First Wedding Anniversary for 3/2 pilot & wife They knew when they got married on Feb 29, 2008, that they would only get to celebrate the actual date of their vows every four years. What Warrant Officer-3 Wayne Ming and wife, Lisha, didn‟t know is that first anniversary would be even more special with a Homecoming and Family reunion scheduled as part of the festivities. Ming, B Co 3-2 Aviation, is a Chinook Instructor Pilot who has been deployed to Afghanistan on a special assignment. He and fellow aviators are scheduled to return to Camp Humphreys … you guessed it! February 29. The Mings married on Feb 29, 2008, in Enterprise, Ala., where they had met six year earlier. They have a 3-year-old daughter, Isabella. Alisha, a self-described “military brat,” is from Enterprise where her father retired. Wayne was born in Jamaica but was raised in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In 2008, after several years of dating and a week-long engagement, the couple was married on Leap Day, 2008. “We have always thought that for our first „real‟ anniversary, we would do something special to celebrate a day that comes around only every four years,” Alisha said. “But after being in Korea for a little over a year, my husband was selected to deploy to Afghanistan for a tour. As soon as he left, we started the countdown for his return. It wasn't until later that I noticed his return date on his orders. You guessed it, February 29, 2012. “At first I was a little sad to think that we may not be together to celebrate our first true anniversary … that we would have to wait another four years to take that special trip. But then I realized. Could I really ask for anything better? “What is better than my husband returning to his family, safe and healthy after serving our country in war? They've even said that it may work out for our guys to get back before the 29th, which would be amazing! “So your question was, „What makes February 29 special?‟ My answer is, not only is it a day I celebrate my precious marriage but it's also a day I get to celebrate my hero‟s returning home from war. What could be better?” Once he‟s back, Wayne and Lisha will be guests of Camp Humphreys FMWR at Sophisticated Saturday at Tommy D‟s.

Put your name on a FMWR Event Units, Family Readiness Groups, Private Organizations, Contractors and Companies can put their name on a Family & MWR Event, providing sponsorship in the way or money, items, volunteers or manpower to help make events bigger and better. Many Units and Organizations are already involved with events like Spooky Hallow, Oktoberfest, SpringFest and Spooky Hallow. But there are many other events on the annual calendar that can use your help. “It takes a lot of people to make things happen,” said Special Events Coordinator Paul Parrish, “and the success or failure of most events depends on the people who volunteer behind the scenes. We have had whole Units volunteer for some events, and we would never accomplish as much as we have without groups like BOSS, the Masons, the United Club and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. “But we can always use more help … especially with the budget cuts we know we are already experiencing. Although it was never true that MWR had a bottomless pot of money, the funding is getting tighter and we will not be able to do as much as we have in the past without some additional assistance.” Here is a partial list of FMWR events and activities that you can help support: Biggest Losers Spring Break Camp Triathlons & Runs BGCA Kid’s Day Mother-Daughter Tea Pooch Plunge End of the World Party Post-Level Sports

Win a Lunar Dragon and help build the future look of FMWR USAG-Humphreys Family & MWR has launched its annual Customer Satisfaction Survey and is looking for your input. While the Survey is always important, this year’sSurvey is even more meaningful, said FMWR Director Don Claycomb. “There are two factors that make this year’s Survey more important than usual,” he said. “First is the fact we are moving closer and closer to the actual construction of new facilities on the expanded Camp Humphreys. “The second reason is the financial situation. It’s no secret that the Army as a whole is looking at less money this year and beyond. Some changes will have to be made and in order to make smart changes we need to hear from you – our customers.” The Survey only takes about 5-minutes to complete and will be available from now through February 28. As an added incentive for you to complete the Survey, FMWR will be giving away three stuffed dragons in recognition of the Lunar Year of the Dragon. Go to “Surveymonkey.com/s/2012dragon” Once you complete the Survey, send a note to Marketing Chief Mike Mooney at Michael.mooney2@us.army.mil to be entered into the drawing which will take place February 29. The Survey is also available on the Humphreys and FMWR Marketing Facebook pages 14 and on the Humphreys and MWR.com Web sites.
Become a Friend of the Marketing Facebook Page And win an Area III Travel Mug in this month’s Caption Contest USAG-Humphreys Family & MWR has a Facebook page designed to share photos and information with the Community. And we want you to become a “Friend.” Family & MWR is trying to channel all questions about Camp Humphreys Family & MWR programs to a single Facebook page – the one maintained by Marketing. We have Facebook pages throughout the Directorate, and those pages will remain the primary source for program announcements and schedules. But when it comes to questions, we are trying to direct them to one location to assure that you get the answer you deserve as quickly as possible. As an incentive to join the Marketing Facebook page, we are starting a monthly Caption Contest, selecting a photo from an FMWR activity and giving you a chance to test your imagination. This photo is from the Dallas Cowboys Youth Cheerleading Clinic held in December. What could she be thinking? Go to ….

Winter Hiking 101 By Chris Fletcher (Deputy Fire Chief Chris Fletcher enjoys hiking Korea’s many mountains, no matter what the weather, but Winter-time treks require some extra caution and special equipment. Here are his recommendations)
If you are going to hike in winter in Korea, be prepared. I dress in layers, with wick away undershirts and fleece, I carry an outer shell in the pack, wear baggy pants (I do have some wind and water proof clothing for wet or cold days) with long underwear. Wear good boots with ankle support, a good grip on the soles, and moisture protection to keep your feet dry Wool socks help keep the feet warm. A scarf around the neck covers the face and ears. I finish off with a cap and sunglasses. I have a compass and thermometer on my pack and carry spikes in case it gets too icy on the trail. In my pack, I have a thermos of hot soup and other snack items including another thermos of warm water (cold water will give cramps). I have a GPS on the wrist and use a Hiking Stick. I also carry a first aid kit and plastic zip bags to protect my wallet and cell phone. And, of course, I always carry a camera. Koreans enjoy hiking, and almost everywhere you go, you will meet other hiking enthusiasts. In many areas, hiking trails are well marked. In fact, in many areas you can pick up a map of local hiking trails. Another thing you can do is take a picture of the hiking trail sign at the beginning of your outing. While the map might be in Korean, it will usually show key landmarks to help you find out where you are by looking at the photo you shot when you started, Perhaps the most important thing to remember is not to tackle trails beyond your ability. Like ski runs, hiking trails are rated by their difficulty. Pick some easier trails to start and work your way up to the more difficult treks. Have fun and be safe!
Taebaek Snow Festival Through February 5 The Taebaek Snow Festival is one of the biggest in Korea and includes a fantastic display of Snow & Ice Sculptures, a Polar Bear Run, Ice Wall Climbing, a Snowman Festival, Skiing, Snowboarding & Sledding A number of other interactive programs such as a snow sculpture competition for university students, Dr. Fish foot bath, snow sledding, dog sled rides and other fun games will be held during the festival period. The festival full of fun and excitement will be the best winter destination providing worthwhile memories for adults dreams of happiness for kids. Visit the Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival for an exciting winter with friends and family.
Extreme Adventure – Ice Climbing
Two things Korea has a lot of, especially in the winter. Ice and moutains. Have you ever wanted to learn Ice Climbing? Discover Seoul at the Camp Humphreys CAC and the Dragon Hill Lodge can help you. Discover Seoul works with the Sanirang Alpine Networks Ice Climbing School which teaches Ice Climbing for everything from novice to experienced climbers. Instructors are all experienced climbing professionals who have scaled some of the world’s tallest mountains. School runs $400 a person and is held Feb 5 and an overnight session, Feb 11-12. School actually started Jan 29 (before publication) but people can join Feb 5. Participants will learn basic ice climbing skills on low grade and vertical ice walls. Applied winter clothing systems‚ ice safety‚ knots‚ top-rope belaying‚ abseiling and other applied techniques exclusive to winter climbing conditions will be learned such as the various French techniques‚ N-Body‚ X-Body and other useful ice climbing skills. This a good opportunity and not exclusive to beginners, but is also great for intermediate ice climbers alike because this course covers such a wide range of skills on various grades of ice and is an excellent way to review and practice the numerous techniques on ice with experienced and qualified instructors. Sanirang Alpine Networks also rents all of the necessary gear required to join the Climbing School from head to toe -- helmet, ice climbing boots, harness, and belaying device set, crampons and axes for only 25,000 won for everything per outing. Contact Discover Seoul for more information.

Local Restaurant Review Variety key feature at Gombagi Restaurant By Ashley Webber
E-Co 3-2 GSAB There are many choices when it comes to Korean restaurants in the Anjungri and Pyeongtaek area. But what makes the Gombagi Restaurant different and special in my book is the variety that it offers. Most restaurants give you a small helping of Kimchi when your order a meal. At Gombagi, you receive a whole selection of side dishes, including a variety of kimchies as well as a great mixture of vegetables. Located within minutes of the main gate, Gombagi serves a wide variety of meats but my favorite is the Pork Galbi. You cook it yourself at the table over hot coals. Another nice feature is that it offers both traditional Korean seating (on the floor) or tables and chairs. In nice weather, you can even sit outside. To get to Gombagi, go left out the main gate like you’re headed to Osan on the River Road. Between OMG and the turn for Osan (at the blinking light) you will see the restaurant on your left. If you reach the blinking light, you’ve gone too far. The Pork Galbi is 13,000 won and comes with the side dishes, including an amazing spicy tofu bean soup. Gombagi is an experience you cannot miss. They also offer grilled ribs, grilled duck and short rib soup. Gombagi is a great place to introduce yourself and your Family to some great Korean food. Give it a try. You’ll love the variety. They

Toppokki – Easy and popular By Jiseon ‘Jei’ Lee
FMWR Marketing Korean Intern You can find Toppokki just about anywhere – from roadside food tents to restaurants to stops on the expressway. Once a food reserved for royalty, Toppokki is now a dish enjoyed by young and old alike throughout Korea. And it’s something you can make at home, too, in a very short period of time. Ingredients include rice cake sticks, fish cakes, green onion, gachujang or (Korean chili paste), corn syrup, regular onion, cabbage, hard-boiled eggs, garlic and ramen noodles. Put the rice cake sticks in water to soften for about 30 minutes while fixing your hard boiled eggs. Slice the onion, cabbage, green onion and fish cake into bite-size pieces. Mix three cups of water and the 1 teaspoon of gochujang and corn syrup into a pot and add your garlic when it comes to a boil. Mix everything together, add the hard boiled eggs and ramen noodles and continue to boil until the noodles are soft and ready to eat. Some people don’t use the eggs or noodles, but that’s the way I like it. Toppokki is a Great Taste of Korea.
Korea starts international cruise line Korea’s first international cruise travel is set to take off from Busan this month. Weighing 26,000 tons, Club Harmony will be the first Korean cruise ship to set sail abroad. The ship has 383 staterooms, which can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers, as well as a swimming pool, casino, buffet restaurant, theater, fitness club, spa and kids’ club. Club Harmony’s first destination: Japan. On this Busan-Japan route, the ship will offer fine dining menus featuring Korean and Japanese cuisines, and also host a special K-Pop event such as a music concert or a celebrity fan meeting. Meanwhile, Harmony Cruise, Korea’s first cruise line and owner of Club Harmony will be expanding its services to include Busan-Japan-China and Busan-JapanRussia routes. The initial schedule from February-April26 will see 18 trips to Fukuoka, 15 to Nagasaki, six to Beppu, three to Kagoshima and 10 to Osaka. For information and reservations you can call 02-2260-1216. Korea has ferries and jet boats that ply the waters between the peninsula and both China and Japan. But this is the country’s first effort at a luxury Cruise line. Ships departing from the Pyeongtaek port travel to China, Japan, Shanghai and Taiwan. To find out what ships leave from which Korean ports, you can use an interactive map at http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_8_2.jsp. This site lists the various Korean ports and shows where ships sail to from each location. You can also catch a jet boat to Jeju and Ulendo Island from the various ports. Those boats, however, are very small in comparison to the new Club Harmony.

New group of 10 Interns Ten new Korean students from Pyeongtaek and Namseoul universities have joined the Camp Humphreys workforce as college interns. This is the fifth group of interns to serve at Camp Humphreys. The students, who are selected by the school and a special committee of Camp Humphreys supervisors, will spend six months working at Camp Humphreys offices and activities. The students are not paid for their work and, in fact, actually pay the schools to serve in the internship program. The newest group, where they work and which college they attend includes Kim, Hyun Ja - ACS (PTU), Ahn, Hye Ju - CAC (NSU), Kim, Sungeun - CYS (NSU), Kim, Nang Kyung - CYS (PTU), Yoon, Hyun Gyu - DPTMS (PTU), Cho, Seo Hee Elementary School (PTU), Lee, Jiseon - Marketing (PTU), Cho, Yun Ah - ODR (NSU), Eom, Seon Mi - PAIO (PTU) and Kim, Da Hye - PAO (PTU). “This program was created by former Family & MWR Director Steve Ryan and has been great for the students, the schools and the Camp Humphreys workforce,” said Denise Chappell, coordinator of the Internship program. “Several of the interns have returned to Camp Humphreys as new Korean employees, while others have continued their education in Korea or aboard. Everyone – teachers, students and supervisors – agrees that the Internship program has been a valuable experience.”
