Celebrate National Women’s History Month

The name of March comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars (Ares), the Greek god of war. In Rome, where the climate is Mediterranean, March was the first month of spring, a logical point for the beginning of the year as well as the start of the military campaign season. It’s one of seven months that is 31 days long.

March is National Women’s history Month. This year’s theme presents the opportunity to women’s stories - individually and collectively - into the essential fabric of our Naitons history. There is a real Poer in hearing women’s stories, both personally and in a larger context. Remembering and recounting tales of our ancestors’ talents, sacrifices, and commitments inspires today’s generations and opens the way to the future.

1.The term “March Madness” was first used to describe high school basketball. 2.1 March: Ohio became 17th state (1803), Nebraska became 37th state (1867) 3.The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means stormy month, or Hraed monath which means rugged month. 4.1 March, 1872 Yellowstone becomes world’s 1st national park.

Women’s Health Diet (613.042 Per 2012) Women’s Issues in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s (YA813.3 Wom 2009) Unlucky 13 (McN F Pat 2014) Women’s Small Business Start-up Kit (658.1 Pak 2010) Michelle Obama: Meet the First Lady (J B Oba 2009) Roosevelts: An Intimate History (DVD 973.91 Roo 1-7 2014)

5.1 March, 1873 E. Remington and Sons in Ilion, New York begins production of the first practical typewriter. 6.1 March, 1936 The Hoover Dam is completed. 7.1 March, 1961 President John F. Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps. 8.1 March, 1962 K-Mart opens first store in Garden City, MI. 9.1 March, 1973 Robyn Smith becomes 1st female jockey to win a major race. 10.9 March 1959- Barbie was introduced at the New York Toy Fair.
