As unique as Haewoojae is, what makes Sim most memorable to people was his campaign as Suwon Mayor to clean up public bathrooms. From 1995-2002, he launched a campaign to transform public toilets into "clean and beautiful resting places imbued with culture''. “We should learn to go beyond seeing toilets as just a place for defecation,” the late Sim once said, “but also as a place of culture where people can rest, meditate and be happy.” When Haewoojae first opened in November 2007, Sim would allow two guests to spend the night at the house for a fee of 50,000,000 won (about $50,000 U.S.). He used the money to purchase toilets for poor communities throughout Korea and throughout the Third World. Tours of the Toilet House are free of charge. It is open from 1000-1800 Tuesday-Sunday and is located at 458-9 Jangan Ro, Jangan-Gu, Suwon City (Imok-dong 186-3). Suwon Rec Center Director Bob Frace is planning a tour in the near future. You can contact Frace at 788-5840 for more information.

MARCH 2011

New challenges are welcome, but your help is needed DON CLAYCOMB

Director, Family & MWR

Korea is, without a doubt, colder than Maryland. My wife, Nancy, and I discovered that fact as we stepped off the plane from the States in mid-February. People say this is an exceptional winter. I hope so. My name is Don Claycomb and I am the new director of Family & MWR. I have worked for Uncle Sam for more than 20 years, but this is my first venture to Asia. It’s something Nancy and I are both looking forward to. Coming to USAG-Humphreys is exciting to both of us. As we toured the installation, got briefings on the present and future and met the people of both Family & MWR and the Community, we can sense a combination of challenges and excitement. I will be getting around to meet the men Commander

COL JOSEPH MOORE FMWR Director

and women of USAG-Humphreys over these next few weeks and months and, from what I’ve been told, will be “formally” introduced to the Community at the March 1 Community Update Brief. Meanwhile, I’m here and ready to go to work. The role of Family & MWR is a bit different in the overseas community … a fact I learned well during my time in Europe. And yet, it really isn’t different. Our mission is to provide you programs and activities that meet your needs and the needs of your Family. To do that, we need your help. We are currently conducting a Customer Service Survey. Please take it. And continue to use the ICE system. We want as much input as possible. I want to hear your thoughts and ideas. Meanwhile, it’s great to be here at Humphreys … even if it is a bit cold.

Understanding Korea

HWATU History has never traced the actual start of card playing. Perhaps, as seen on the old Flintstone cartoon series, the original cards were made of stone and played by cavemen. Regardless of how it all started, people throughout the world play their card games. And the Koreans are no different. The most popular card game in Korea is called Hwatu or Go-Stop. You’ll see Koreans playing in shops, streets, bars and in homes. Just listen for the distinctive sound of slaps as they slam the small plastic cards on a table. Unlike the Bicycle decks found in the U.S., Hwatu are small, thick cards with flower designs. The biggest maker of the cards is Nintendo. The toilet theme is central to Haewoojae, or a "place to solve one's worries," It is shaped like a 24 ½ foot-tall toilet bowl. A showpiece bathroom at the center of the 4,520-square-foot house is on display through a floor-to-ceiling window made of glass that turns opaque at the touch of a button. When guests enter to do their business, a motion sensor activates classical music. The home has four bathrooms that include a whirlpool bathtub, urinals and large glass showers. Taste of Korea

Skip the Cake & Ice Cream: It’s time for Birthday Soup American children probably won’t be happy if you decided to celebrate their birthday ‘The Korean Way.’ Instead of Cake & Ice Cream, traditional Korean Moms are going to insist on Birthday Soup. And even the more modern Korean Moms will rule that the Cake & Ice Cream wait until after the traditional bowl of Miyuk gook has been finished to the last drop. Also known as Seaweed Soup, Miyuk gook is a tradition that goes back thousands of years. The rumor is that a bowl of Birthday Soup assures a year of good health by cleaning the blood stream, while not getting that bowl means a year filled with illness and nagging injuries caused by your ‘dirty blood.’ So get yourself some dried seaweed, the soup stock of your choice, a little garlic, some sea salt, sesame oil and soy sauce and bring it to a boil. Let it cool and serve it to the birthday boy and girl. And have a bowl for yourself, too. Wash it down with Cake and Ice Cream. By the way, it’s also great for pregnant women. 21

Moses’ Miracle Comes to Korea Jindo Island on Korea’s southwest coast is famous as the home of the Jindo, Korea’s native canine with the curling tail and protective nature. But once a year, the island is also famous for what the world has come to call the “Moses’ Miracle.” As any military historian can tell you, the tidal swings on Korea’s west coast are extreme. A good example was the Incheon Landing which was the most decisive battle of the Korean War, The Incheon tidal difference was important, but nothing like what will happen in Jindo between March 19-21. Would you believe that 25 feet of water will vanish and that a road 130-feet wide and 2.7 miles long will suddenly appear and connect Jindo to the mainland? Thousands of people will walk the newly exposed sea floor, making their way across the temporary roadway, gathering fish, clams, octopus, abalone and seaweed that’s suddenly exposed or trapped in tidal pools for the picking. Locals celebrate the unusual event with the Jindo Sea-Parting Festival, offering hundreds of booths, handicrafts, food and drink. The one thing you won’t get the chance to buy, though, is a purebred Jindo dog. As one of Korea’s National Treasures, the sale, breeding and even the export from the island is tightly controlled by the local government. The tides, however, are controlled by an even higher power. You can catch a direct bus to Jindo from Seoul’s Central City Terminal. There are express buses at 0735, 0900, 1530 and 1635 daily. The estimated travel time is 5½ hours. The actual festival is a 30-minute taxi ride from the Jindo terminal. Check eng.jindo.go.kr for more details.

Cheongdo Bullfights

Bloodless Bullfights Bullfighting is a 1,000-year old tradition in Korea. But, unlike bull fights in Spain and Mexico, there are no matadors or slaying of the bulls. At Cheongdo, the bulls are the stars, pitting their strength against other bulls – horn-to-horn. More than 100 bulls from Korea, the United States, Japan and Australia are expected to go horn-to-horn. Other activities will include a belly dancing show, a small circus and a bubble magic show. Nowadays bullfighting is an immensely popular sport in Korea. It has moved from rural farms to massive arenas with hundreds of thousands turning up to watch. This is easily the biggest of Korea's bullfighting events. Alongside the fights are numerous exhibitions to wander through, including displays on farming in the Cheongdo area and photography of the famous bullfights.

OUTDOOR REC TOUR Outdoor Rec is scheduling a trip Cost is $40 for adults and $30 for children, which includes round-trip transportation and on-bus snacks. Admission to the bull fights is 2000W, Call 753-3255/3013 for additional information. March 26 – Bus departs Outdoor Rec at 0700 and returns around 2000 Reservation deadline – March 21

Special Classes March 12 – Beads for Kids, 1600-1700, $5 March 13 – Candle Making, 1500-1600, $5 March 17 – Lucky Charm, 1700-1800, $5 March 19 – Kid’s Bag Painting, 1600-1700, $5 March 20 – Soap Making, 1500-1600, $10 Class registration and payment is required at least 4days prior to the class. There is a minimum number of participants required (2-3 people depending on the class). Otherwise, the class will be canceled. This is required because we need to know the number before the class in order to order the right amount supplies, and it usually takes 3 days for delivery. Also, when we have a class which is instructed by external instructors, they want to set a minimum number of participants.

Get the most out of your digital camera You may never become as good a photographer as George Smith or instructor-in-waiting Tim Hartley, but they are willing to share their experience and knowledge with you free of charge. Bring your camera and the instruction book to the CAC Aerobics Room from 1000-1600 Saturday, March 12, and start unlocking your camera’s magic. These are two of Tim’s digital photos. Tim will take over the class in June, but is assisting now.

Vets now in own Clinic facility The Humphreys Veterinary Clinic now has a roof over its head, some desks and chairs and even some computers. What it doesn’t have yet is the equipment needed to start offering full service. Progress has been made, however, and it’s just a matter of time before Humphreys will be able to offer the same services as Osan – minus the long drive with a sick dog or cat in your lap. Meanwhile, the weekly Well Animal Clinic has been move from the Community Activity Center to the new Vet Clinic located just inside the airfield gate to the right of the CPX Gate. Signs provide directions. The Well Animal Clinic is each Monday from 0900-1200 and 1300-1500, Services include, vaccinations, micro-chipping, and health checks. It cannot handle sick pets.

In fact, with one of the world’s most advances systems of subways, trains and buses, it’s pretty easy to go anywhere on the peninsula. Army Community Service (ACS) makes it even easier with the Wonder Wheels program it offers each Saturday. Pre-Registration is not required. Just meet at the Walk-thru Gate BBQ Pavillion before 0900 each Saturday, bring Korean Won, wear comfortable walking shoes, bring your camera and see how easy it is to Discover Korea.

In addition to offering discount rates based on rank or grade, AFRCs include a wide-range of programs and activities such as mini-PXs, restaurants, beaches, swimming pools, tour centers and more. Check the AFRCresorts.com site for more information & entry forms.

AFRC Contest runs March 15-June 15

World’s Largest Leprechaun

Family & MWR Marketing’s Jeff Hubbard has to be the world’s largest leprechaun. But like all leprechauns, large and small, he has access to pots of gold. Of course, being in Korea, he keeps his gold stored in Kimchi pots. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day (which really should be a National Holiday), Leprechaun Jeff will be hiding his pots around Humphreys. And if you find one and bring it to Family & MWR Marketing (Room 119 in Bldg 1280), he will reward you with some Family & MWR goodies. The first gold-filled Kimchi pot will be hid by March 7 and you have until March 11 to find it. Clues for Pots 2 and 3 will appear in the Weekly Flash distributed with the Daily Garrison Notes. GOLD KIMCHI POT No. 1 1-If the sun is in the right position, it could be at the end of a rainbow 2-Remember the letter D between two Cs 3-The biggest tree in the world – at least to leprechauns 4-The sound of water when I walk through the forest Watch the electronic marquees to find out when Pot No 1 is found

COMING IN APRIL

Every year we Salute Our Area III Kids by running their photos in Happenings, Family Strong and the Alaska Mining Co. Placemat. We don’t care if they’re here or back home. If you send us their photo, we’ll work to get them published. Please limit the number of photos you send to your favorite – not favorites. Space is limited, and we want to make every child gets their time in the sun. Group photos are welcome as are photos of kids being kids. Send your photos in jpeg format to area3mwrmarketing@korea.army.mil by March 10.
