Gosu Cave not for faint of heart Spelunking (or potholing if you’re from the United Kingdom) takes a special person with a spirit of adventure who doesn’t suffer from a fear of dark places. Gosu Cave, about an hour south of Wonju, may not be much of a challenge for a true caver. But it’s an ideal test for a person who wants to have a safe but rugged caving experience. \
Located near Danyang, Gosu was formed more than 450 million years ago and is listed as Korea National Monument 256. It was discovered in the 1970s but served as a home to prehistoric Koreans. Unlike similar caves such as Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, the layout of Gosu is vertical, with twisting staircases wide enough for a single person. In some areas, it’s necessary to bend and twist you way through the passageway. It’s worth the effort. The main branch of Gosu is almost 4,000 feet long and features a variety of spectacular speleothems: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, cave coral, cave pearls, cave shields, draperies and aragonite crystals – all close enough to reach out and touch. The main chamber has a series of majestic 33 foot stalactites. Take a comfortable pair of walking shoes, a light jacket (even in the summer) and a bottle of water. You’ll need all of them. And don’t forget your camera. You’ll be up close and personal with some of most dazzling cave formations in the world.

First Stop when visiting Seoul There are a lot of things to see in Seoul and, with the subway or the bus, you’re just a short ride away. But Seoul can be intimidating. The 8 th largest city in the world with a population of 10.5 million people in a space the size of Louisville, Ky., with lots of traffic and lots of people. Add the different language, smells and money, even the bravest tourist can get confused and frustrated. Working for the U.S. government, however, has its advantages. And one of the fastest growing is the Discover Seoul Desk at the Dragon Hill Lodge. You don’t have to be a guest at the Dragon Hill to use the services of the Discover Seoul Desk (although the DHL would appreciate it if you booked a room). All you need is your ID Card and you are eligible for professional English-speaking help, discount tickets, guided tours and a complete list of the top current activities in Seoul. You can catch a bus to Seoul from In front of Burger King and either walk or catch a cab to the DHL from the Yongsan Bus Station.

Understanding Korea
Buddha’s Birthday May 10 Want a baby boy? Rub Buddha’s belly. Want to discover your true potential? Buddhism might help. May 10 is Buddha’s Birthday – a holiday that will be celebrated from one end of the peninsula to the other ... including by many who claim Christianity as their religion of choice. One of the world’s oldest religions (it’s more than 500 years older than Christianity), Buddhism started in India and spread throughout Asia – including Korea. There are literally hundreds of Buddhist temples both large and small throughout the peninsula, including several in Anjungri. Buddha’s Birthday is a national holiday in Korea and draws traffic similar to both Lunar New Year and Chusok as Families travel to their home temple to reaffirm their commitment to seek Nirvana.
For Americans serving in Korea, Buddha’s Birthday is an opportunity to discover more about Korea and the Korean people. Buddhist temples, including those in the local area, bring out beautiful tapestries and other decorations reserved for Buddha’s Birthday. There will even be a parade through the town, starting at the local temple located across from Rainbow Apartments. Americans are welcome to join the Parade and visit the temple for food & drink. Uniquely Korean
Korea celebrates its children May is the month of Family Harmony throughout Korea, with Parent’s Day and Teacher’s Day among the holidays on the Korean calendar. But the biggest Harmony Day of all is Children’s Day, set for May 5. Children’s Day is a National Korean Holiday, with parents given a day off work – with pay -- to spend with their children. It was established in 1923 by author Bang Jeong Hwan (the Camp Humphreys Child Development Center bears his name). From the beginning, Children’s Day has been designed for parents to do something special with their children. Various festivals & programs for children are held throughout Korea, and most parents pile in their cars to go where the children want and spend the day playing as a Family. Many major attractions such as Lotte World, Everland, Seoul Land and Seoul’s Children’s Grand Park will have special activities and offer discounts. But even smaller communities and attractions will have special activities for the kids. This is another one of those days when you want to stay off Korean highways. They will be wall-to-wall with cars full of kids.

Taste of Korea
Goldilocks would be happy Not too sweet and not too tart, moist and crisp, lots of juice to make a refreshing beverage. Describing the Korean Golden Melon that will start hitting the fruit stands this month is not easy. Some people describe the taste as that of a cantaloupe, while others point to a honeydew. In reality, the Golden Melon has its own distinctive taste that’s, well, as Goldilocks would say, just right. One of the big advantages of the Korean Golden Melon is its size. It is about the size of a small Nerf football, meaning that unlike larger melons, you can eat one as a quick snack and not have to worry about what’s left making your refrigerator smell funny. The flesh and eatable seeds are white and the juice is cream colored and sweet. You need to peel a Golden Melon, but the skin can be dried for a homemade tea or to use in potpourri. When dried, it has a citrus smell. Like all melons, the golden melon can serve as bowl for ice cream or even be used in making ice cream. It’s can also be used as a garnish in salads. Fruit should be solid but not hard and have a sweet smell. It doesn’t need refrigeration, although it does taste better if chilled. Give it a try. The start of warmer weather is a great time for the Taste of Korea. Happenings May 11.indd 31

Lotus Lantern Festival
Seoul’s 600-year festival ‘Hands-on’ The Lotus Lantern Festival held in the Jongno area is one of Seoul’s landmark traditional festivals. The time-honored festival, which originates from an exciting tradition of Gwandeongnori, has been keep alive throughout the entire 600-year history of Seoul. Commemorating the Birth of Buddha, the festival gives visitors the opportunity to delve into the mystic Korean Buddhist Culture through a variety of magical events and hands-on experiences. The festival starts with the lighting of the mega-sized Jangeomdeung (Grand Light) which is located on the Seoul Plaza and symbolizes Buddhism and the birth of Buddha. A series of other lotus lantern events follow – a Lantern Parade from Insa-dong to Jogyesa Temple; Buddhist Cultural Festival; Cheer-up Buddhist Festival, Grand Harmony Festival and the Closing Ceremony. One of the favorite activities among international visitors is the hands-on experience program where visitors can make lotus-shaped lanterns or paint a Buddhist picture The festival runs May 6-8 from Dongdaemun to Jogyesa Temple, along Jongno Street in Seoul. The easiest way to get there is via subway -Take Subway Line 1 to Jonggak Station (Exit #2) or Take Line 3 to Anguk Station (Exit #6) Happenings May 11.indd 32

On-Post Cable TV to cost starting July 1 Beginning July 1, U.S. Army garrisons in Korea will join other overseas garrisons by charging a monthly rate for cable television services for patrons who reside on post. All patrons will pay a basic maintenance and distribution fee of $15 a month for the basic cable TV package, which will expand to include all AFN channels. Those patrons that subscribe to the Premium service will pay the $15 maintenance fee plus $25 for the Premium channels or a total of $40. Premium subscribers currently pay $35 per month so that is only a $5 increase, said Ron Buss, IMCOM-K Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Business Programs chief. Patrons who currently receive the free basic service and wish to sign up for the new basic or upgrade to premium service should contact cable TV customer service at 738-2288 (CATV). Cable technicians will be installing necessary equipment in garrison buildings and begin disconnecting nonsubscribers on June 1. Buss said he expected to have the new system in place and fully operational by July 1. During the month of June, patrons may experience occasional interruptions in cable service as technicians calibrate the system. By July 1, those who have not subscribed for basic or premium cable service will no longer receive the service.

Visit China over holiday weekend Walking through the gates of Tiananmen square, strolling through the Forbidden City, struggling up the Great Wall and experiencing China’s ‘wheel of fortune’ each time you enjoy a meal are just a few of the experiences awaiting you on a visit to Beijing. And you can go there for an affordable price over one of the upcoming holiday weekends. US Airline Alliance on the second floor of the Soldier Support Center (One Stop) handles everything for you at one low price that includes a group visa, 5-star accommodations, tours of all the major attractions, transportation and most meals. Call at least a month in advance and enjoy a memorable experience.
Getting a Passport made easier for you Don’t have a tourist Passport? You’re not alone. Many Soldiers arrive in Korea on their ID Card and orders. But if you want to visit China, Vietnam or Thailand, you’re going to need a blue Passport. Now, thanks to Directorate of Logistics, there’ a Passport office on the second floor of the Soldier Support Center (One Stop) where you can acquire a Passport in two weeks or less. There some items you need such as a copy of your birth certificate, proof of US Citizenship and passport photos, but everything can be handled locally, saving you a trip to Seoul. All the information you need is available at http://Humphreys.korea.army.mil/passports. Please call 7538557 for more information or to make an appointment. 59
