Know Your Dad While You Can MIKE MOONEY
Family & MWR Marketing Chief
It was many moons ago that my Dad collapsed while wrapping pipes in the heat of a California summer, dead before he hit the ground at the tender age of 42. I was still in the Army - the only soldier at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and my brother was in the Navy and had to be flown in from Vietnam. I am reminded of what my Dad means to me every June as we celebrate Father’s Day. With kids of my own, I am now the one who gets honored on the special day. But, of course, I can’t thank my own father and I missed the opportunity. Dad wasn’t the smartest person in the world, at least I didn’t think so in those teen years before I joined the Army. He never admitted it, but I think he had a brain transplant between the time I joined the Army and the return from my first tour in ‘Nam. He must have, because he got a lot smarter in those 13 months. A child of the Great Depression (yes, I know most of you are so young you don’t know what that was), he quit school in the second grade and worked two paper routes to help feed himself and his dozen brothers and sisters. He never did go back to school, but he made sure that my brother, sister and I stayed in school and got an education. Early on, he discovered that the only thing that would keep me in school was sports. Every day after dragging himself home from work, he would pull out his three-fingered baseball glove and take me outside to play catch. He wasn’t very athletic. He threw like a girl and caught like a coward, but he was there every night and weekend. As my skills developed, he managed to get the job doing the plumbing in, Dodger Hall of Famer, Don Drysdale’s new home so I could go along and talk to my hero. As I go out to umpire or take pictures of youth sports, I look at Dads and their relationships with their kids. Then I think about the fact none of us know how long we have to cement that relationship. If you’re lucky enough to still have a Dad somewhere in the world, remember him this month. Give him a call and tell him how much he means to you … just in case you can’t do it next year.

Korea-US World Cup Schedule
Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê World Cup TV, Very Early, Very Late If you’re planning to watch either the U.S. or Korea in the upcoming World Cup Soccer Tournament, you had better purchase a good alarm clock and get ready for some early mornings and late nights. Because of the time difference between South Africa and Korea, almost all the U.S. and Korea games are scheduled for either 0330 or 2300. The only exceptions are Korea’s opening Pool B games against Greece and Argentina, which be in prime time June 12 and 17. The AFN schedule doesn’t list World Cup Games, however, KBS-TV will air all Korea contests as well as the semifinals and July 12 finals. KOREA WORLD CUP SCHEDULE (Pool B Greece, Argentina, Korea and Nigeria) June 12 Korea vs Greece, 2030; June 17 Korea vs Argentina, 2030; June 23 Korea vs Nigeria, 0330. Uniquely Korean
It" s Time to be the Red BY SEONG GU (MARTIN) LEE Marketing Intern This is a special time in Korea, from June 12 through the time Korea is eliminated from the FIFA World Soccer Cup Soccer Tournament (hopefully in July), many Koreans will be wearing horns and shirts that proclaim “Be the Red.” What’s this? Are South Koreans turning into Communists? While Americans associated the term “Reds” with Communism, it means something very Ê different to the Korean people. It all started in 2002 when Korea co-hosted the World Cup with Japan. The Korean team wasn’t expected to do well in the World Cup Tournament, but we made it all the way to the Semifinals and “Be the Red!” was born. Korean people honored their team by wearing red clothes. Everyone wore a red T-shirt, but some people even wore red pants. Many fans went ever further, having their faces painted blue and red or wearing a funny red devil mask. Many girls also wore red horns. Whatever they wore, Koreans gathered in front of televisions to watch every minute of every game, screaming their lungs out with the expression “Dae han min kuk" (literal translation “Great Republic of Korea”) as they cheer on their national soccer team. As the World Cups starts in South Africa, red clothing is becoming more and more difficult to find in Korean stores (luckily, I already have a red Marketing shirt, so I’m ready). One of the most amazing things that happened in 2002 was in the park in front of Seoul City Hall. This huge park drew about 1 million South Korea soccer fans, turning the park into a Sea of Red. A Korea newspaper described the arrival of the soccer fans as a “red wave” and Korean television stations still show time-lapsed photos of the park transforming from empty to full. This year, the Korean peoples expect their team will do well in the World Cup. If you want to see the Korean mentality, I recommend you enjoy this festival with the Korean people, and Wear Red. Also, don’t be upset if your Korean neighbors keep you awake at night or wake you up early in the morning with their loud cheering. Unfortunately, most of our games will start at 11 at night or 3:30 in the morning and we get very loud when Korea scores a goal. Join us and be the Red!

Humphreys Baseball Trip
Humphreys to visit Eagles - June 26 Adults $15, Kids $5 - Includes Game, Bus and Boxed Lunch Sign up now at CAC front desk Humphreys Pitch, Hit & Throw winners to be honored at game
The Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Professional Baseball League will honor USAG-Humphreys & Ê Area III at their June 26 game against the LG Twins. The Eagles will admit Humphreys youngsters free of charge and sell adult tickets for just $5 each. Youth Sports is arranging bus transportation and a boxed lunch. The cost will be $15 for adults and $5 for children, which will include the game, round-trip transportation to Daejon and the boxed meal. Since both buses and meals have to be pre-ordered, the signup deadline is June 23. Sign up at the front desk of the Community Activity Center. The fee must be paid at the time of registration. The Eagles are one of eight teams in the Korean Professional Baseball League and won the Korea Championship in 1999. Like all Korean teams, the Eagles have two foreign players on their roster. Both Eagles are from the Dominican Republic, have major league experience and are pitchers. Julio DePaula is a starter for Hanwha. He played for Twins and had a cup of coffee with Tampa Bay. The other is reliever José Capellán who played for Atlanta, Milwaukee, Detroit and Colorado. Pitching in the Dominican league for the Gigantes del Cibao this past winter, he led the league with a 2.15 ERA and in wins with 7. Of his 12 starts 7 of them went 6 innings. He had 41 strikeouts compared to just 12 walks, a performance that earned him a $300,000 contract with Hanwha. Team officials promised to provide Humphreys youngsters the opportunity to meet both players at the June 26 game. Hanwha will also recognize the Humphreys winners in The Pitch, Hit & Throw competition set for June 12 at Independence Park. Watch the weekly Flash or call Youth Sports Director BradFicek at 753-5602 for updates. Independence Hall, a Full Day of Fun From the field of Korean flags at its entrance through beautiful interaction halls of thousands of years of Korean history, Independence Hall in nearby Choenon is one of those ‘must see’ Korean attractions. It is just a short distance from USAG-Humphreys and it’s free! Head south on the expressway and watch for exit signs marked Independence Hall and drive straight into the parking lot. Renovations to the National Heritage Prehistoric Hall are expected to be done this month, but even if it’s closed, Independence Hall is worth the trip. Independence Hall preserves the history of Korea’s struggles with the Japanese and contains literally thousands of antiques, documents, mannequins and displays. And almost everything is identified in English. Especially interesting (and an ideal personalized photo opportunity) are the outside displays of the Korean farmers’ protests and battles with the Japanese government and Army. In addition to getting assassinated, you can lock yourself in shackles, inside a jail or experience a torture chamber. Independence Hall also includes picnic areas, restaurants and snack bars. Don’t forget your camera, comfortable shoes and few won to spend of food and souvenirs Ê
Have you discovered a ‘Local Attraction’ you would like to recommend to fellow Soldiers, Families and Civilians? Let us know, and we’ll consider it for a future ‘In the Neighborhood’ feature. Send your suggestion to area3mwrmarketing@korea.army.mil

Understanding Korea

Korean Table Manners So you" ve been invited to a " real Korean meal" by one of your new friends and you have no idea how to act. There" s no Korean " Emily Post" book in the PX. What are you going to do? Like every country in the world, there are " dos and don" ts" of etiquette in Korea. Here are some simple rules to remember: At a formal table, hot and watery foods are placed on the right side and cold and dry foods are placed on the left. The rice bowl is on the left and soup bowl is on the right, with other bowls placed in the middle. The spoon is on the right side and chop sticks are behind the spoon and placed a little towards the outside of the table. Kimchi dishes are on the back row, stew dishes on the right, sauces in the middle of the front row, meat dishes on the right side and vegetables on the left side. At first, taste soup or kimchi juice, and then try rice or other dishes. Use your spoon for rice and liquid foods and chopsticks for other foods. Do Nots - Hold the rice bowl or soup bowl in your hands during the meal; Poke around the rice or side dishes with the spoon; Use your hands to pick the foods; Make noises while chewing; Reach across the table for distant food. Dos - Use an individual plate for foods served for a crowd and sauces such as soy & hot pepper. Try to keep pace with others by eating. When having a meal with the elderly, wait for them to put the spoon and chopsticks on the table at the end of the meal. After a meal, put the spoon and chopsticks on the spot where they were placed first and put used napkins on the table; When using a toothpick, cover your mouth with one hand and discard it the toothpick afterwards so others won't see it. Enjoy your meal!

True Beauty, Korean Ramie Ê
Traditional Hanbok Starts as a Thistle If youÕ ve spent any time in Korea, youÕ re sure to have seen a Korean woman dressed in the traditional Hanbok. A flowing gown of beautiful colors and shine. However, did you know that the most beautiful and expensive of those Hanbok started life as a thistle weed? ItÕ s true, and this month the thistle growing capital of Korea celebrates with the unique Ramie Ê Festival, June 11-14. The region of Hansan-myeon near Kunsan is famous for producing ramie, one of the worldÕ s oldest fabric crops. The Hansan Mosi Cultural Festival celebrates the high quality (and expensive) luxury clothing that is produced from ramie. Many people journey to this festival to see the beautiful clothes on display. One of the main events is a fashion show, visitors will also have the opportunity to try on some of the clothes and even try the fabric weaving process. The ramie crop is also used in making food, visitors can sample rice cake, ice cream, tea and other refreshments, all made from ramie. At one time, all Korean Hanboks were made from ramie. Today, a ramie Hanbok will cost $1,000 or more. Man-made textiles are much less expensive and can be mass produced. The process of turning the weed into a beautiful creation is long and tedious and starts with chewing the ends of the ramie bark into thin strands. The strands are then hand-twisted to form long pieces and turned into spools of ramie thread. The thread is then loomed into cloth, cut, washed and dyed into a multitude of colors. Koreans have been wearing clothing made from ramie since the 900s and clothing made more than 1,000 years ago looks as beautiful and fresh today as it did when it was first created. It tends to become as fresh and glossy as new when washed and almost never tears. MenÕ s jackets are also made from ramie, which stays cool in the heat of the summer season.

His Legacy Ð Suwon Toilets Former Suwon Mayor and former Korean Assemblyman Sim Jae-Duck died last year. However, he left a legacy that everyone, including U.S. tourists to Suwon, will appreciate. As everyone who has visited a public toilet anywhere in the world knows, public toilets can be Ô pretty ripe.Õ Have you visited a 1- or 2-holer in the States? You know what I mean. When you use a public restroom in Suwon, like Hwaseong Fortress, you are going to be pleasantly surprised. ItÕ s all because of Mr. Sim, affectionately nick named Mr. Toilet and founder of the World Toilet Organization. Sim was so passionate about toilets that he built the worldÕ s first Toilet House, an unusual building identified by Yahoo Ê Travel as one of the WorldÕ s Strangest Structures. The toilet theme is central to the house named Haewoojae, or a "place to solve one's worries," shaped like a 24 ½ foot-tall toilet bowl. Thinking of how to push forward his cause of having better hygiene and sanitation, Sim tore down his former home to build the $1.1 million building. A showpiece bathroom at the center of the 4,520-square-foot house is on display through a floor-to-ceiling window made of glass that turns opaque at the touch of a button. When guests enter to do their business, a motion sensor activates classical music. The home has four bathrooms that include a whirlpool bathtub, urinals and large glass showers. As unique as Haewoojae is, what makes Sim most memorable to people is his campaign as Suwon Mayor to clean up public bathrooms. As mayor of Suwon from 1995-2002, he launched a campaign to transform public toilets into "clean and beautiful resting places imbued with culture''. Ò We should learn to go beyond seeing toilets as just a place for defecation,Ó the late Mr. Sim once said, Ò but also as a place of culture where people can rest, Ê meditate and be happy.Ó When Haewoojae first opened in November 2007, Sim would allow two guests to spend the night at the house for a fee of 50,000,000 won (about $50,000 U.S.). He used the money to purchase toilets for poor communities throughout Korea and throughout the third world. His World Toilet Organization now includes more than 235 member organizations from 58 countries (including the United States). But according to Yahoo Travel, Haewoojae remains the worldÕ s only Toilet House. ThereÕ s no information on the web as to the fate of Haewoojae after SimÕ s death, but SuwonÕ s clean and relaxing public bathrooms remain as a legacy to the man whose grave marker identifies him as Mr. Toilet.

For many people, that means enjoying the local wildlife. From the beautiful and graceful white herons to the equally ugly raccoon dog, Korea has some unique wildlife not readily seen in the United States. Much of that wildlife can be found right here at USAG-Humphreys, including some threatened species such as the Ê Chinese Sparrow seen to the right. Other threatened species identified by DPW Environmental are currently featured on bulletin boards throughout the community. But there are many other birds and animals who share Humphreys with Soldiers and Families. One of the most common is the noisy and aggressive magpie. Those stick nests you see at the top of trees belong to these black, white and bluish birds who have been seen stealing food out of the mouths of cats and dive bombing construction workers who are trimming trees. Ducks and geese are frequently seen in the air over Humphreys, as are flocks of white cranes with their golden brown offspring. Maybe those are storks instead of cranes, judging by the number of new Ê babies in the community. Environmental says that the ponds on the airfield include the unique snakefish as well as bass, trout, carp and catfish. They have even recovered a few piranhas, fish that were purchased from local tropical fish dealers, ate everything else in the fish tank and were dumped in the wild. There are also some deer on the airfield, one of which recently caused a major problem with the landing gear on a 3rd MI aircraft. The deer pictured to the right is one of six seen inside the airfield between 3rd MI and Garrison Headquarters. Korean deer are about the size of Lt. Col. Mike HarlanÕ s Great Danes. Keep a camera handy and get some photos of the Humphreys abundant wildlife.

Married? Single? ACS has a Program for You Many Soldiers and Family members don’t know the full scope of Army Community Service programs, figuring they are only designed for a select group of people. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you work or live at USAG-Humphreys, ACS has a program designed to meet your individual needs. Here are some examples: Basic English as a Second Language, every Monday & Tuesday, 1130 at the Family Readiness Center. Attendees include Korean spouses and employees, Third Country spouses and even Soldiers who want to improve their English language skills. There’s an Advanced course at the same time on Fridays. Wonder Wheels Ð Unlocking the Secrets to Korean Transportation, meets every Saturday at 0900 at the pavilion near the walk-thru gate. This is a great program for everyone, especially with the nice weather starting. You’ll experience use of a Korean bus and subway and receive tips on getting around Korea by train, bus and subway. Bring Korean money because you’ll actually ride a “Kimchi Bus” and make your way to shopping in Seoul. Once you find out how easy and inexpensive it is, you’ll be traveling all over the peninsula and sharing Korea’s wonders with your friends and Family. Special Relationship & Child-Rearing Classes They carry names like Marriage Garden, Children and Divorce, Rearing 1-4 year olds, Living with Teens … classes and sessions to help singles and couples live a better and more more meaningful life. If you have personal problems, Ê there’s Stress and Anger Management. Checkout ACS.
