A Celebration of Kids MIKE MOONEY

Family & MWR Marketing Chief

April is always a special month for everyone associated with the U.S. Military. It‟s the Month of the Military Child. Long before creation of the Army Family Covenant, the military acknowledged the need to recognize and honor our kids with their own special month. They are, after all (as scary as it may sound) our future. As you get longer in the tooth, you‟ll find that those “kids” are becoming leaders in the modern Army. Right now there are a couple of Army majors running around Korea who I coached at Seoul American High School. How did they get so old while I stayed so young? While the U.S. Military has the Month of the Military Child, South Korea takes it a step further with a national holiday called Children‟s Day on May 5. The holiday has been celebrated since 1922 and became an official holiday in 1978. It‟s a bit ironic in that Korea doesn‟t celebrate Mother‟s Day or Father‟s Day. Instead, they have Parent‟s Day on May 8. We kick off Military Children‟s Month by featuring photos of “our kids” throughout our publications – including this edition of Happenings, Family Strong and the monthly Lunch Menu handout. We will even have five different placemats at the Alaska Mining Company – all featuring different local kids. On a more sober note, April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. None of us like to think about Child Abuse, but it‟s a fact that it does happen. It happens in the U.S. Military and, yes, it happens at USAG-Humphreys. The good news is that Army Community Service has an extensive range of free programs that can help end an abusive cycle. See Family Strong.

KOREAN HAPPENINGS

Uniquely Korean

Butterflies are free and so is the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival which was selected as Korea’s Best Festival by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism last year. Located on Korea’s southwest coast, Hampyeong boasts of tens of thousands of butterflies April 23-May 19. Colorful creatures large and small will be found in fields of milk flowers, rapes and grasses as well as special exhibition halls that have a wide collection of butterflies, animals and water plants. More than 30 demonstrations are held throughout the festival, including butterfly catching and other special activities for kids. The entire region has a butterfly theme, including the street performances and the surrounding hills. If you have access to your own car, you can take the West Expressway to Hampyeong. The city is located two interchanges south of Gunsan AB and it should take about three hours to reach. You can get on the West Expressway at Anjung. TRAIN – The train to Hampyeong departs the Pyongtaek station at 0945, 1307, 1404 and 1537 daily. Train tickets are W27,200 on weekdays and W28,500 on weekends, and takes 2½ hours to reach the town. The festival itself is a 10-minute walk or 5-minute cab ride from the train station. BUS & BULLET TRAIN are not recommended since both involve transfers, which can be confusing and difficult. For more information, including an English version of Butterfly Festival activities.

In the Neighborhood is a new feature of FMWR Happenings that will highlight an attraction in the Korean Community that is close enough to reach by Auto, Bus, or Taxi. This month we are featuring the community of Sapgyoho, located about a half hour southwest of Humphreys. In addition to great fresh seafood (the shrimp, crab & shellfish are fabulous and cheap), Sapgyoho features a small amusement park, a Korean Navy museum and a boat ride under the big bridge. The Navy Museum includes the opportunity of touring a Korean Special Forces Troop Carrier and Destroyer, Naval aircraft and the chance to sit behind an antiaircraft gun dressed in flak jacket and helmet. Great photos, so bring your camera, friends and family!

DISCOVER THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH OUTDOOR REC APRIL 11th Outdoor Rec will help you Discover the Neighborhood with a special trip to Sapgyoho on April 11. The bus fee is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Bring won and your camera. The bus leaves at 1000 and returns at 1700. Call 753-3255/3013 to make reservations by April 8.

Super Pyeongtaek Citizens Walking Festival Saturday, April 10 0700-1215 Soccer Field, Pyeongtaek Citizens Walking Festival To celebrate the walking festival with Pyeongtaek citizens. Community members of USAG Humphreys can voluntarily participate in the event to enjoy festivities and share friendship with local nationals. this will be another good opportunity for our community members to explore Korea and make new Korean friends.

Flowers, Fish, Ceramics & Turtle Ships South Korea has it all this coming month. There’s no doubt that better weather is arriving on the Korean Peninsula and, as a result, the number of Festivals and Special Events are increasing by leaps and bounds. And there will be even more in May. In fact, we are expanding our Festival list to include five weeks of activities instead of four, affording you more time to make plans and to prove to yourself that “Outside the Wire Is a Great Place Called Korea.” You can find out more information about any of the listed festivals by going to visitkorea.or.kr on your home computer. This site provides a complete list of festivals, directions, pictures and other details – in English.

Baseball Season Opens

Hanwha Eagles close, affordable If you want to take in a professional baseball game in Korea, you have your choice of the Doosan Bears, the LG Twins or the Heroes in Seoul or the SK Wyverns in Incheon. Here at USAG-Humphreys, though, you have another choice. The Hanwha Eagles play in Daejon, just an hour south by train from the Pyongtaek Train Station (train tickets are W8,100 on weekdays to W8,500 on weekends). Tickets run up to W50,000 in Seoul, but at Daejon, the best seat in the house is just W10,000 for adults and W5,000 for children. There are even cheaper seats if you just want to get a bunch of people together and take in a ball game. General Admission is W5,000 for Adults, W3,000 for Military, W3,000 for Middle & High School Students, W1,000 for Children 7 – 10, FREE for children under 7. Weekday games are at 1830 & weekends at 1700. Like all other pro baseball teams in Korea, the Eagles have cheerleaders and cheer sections, food and beverages, giant screens, souvenir stands, a couple of foreign players and with just 10,500 seats in the stadium, an up-close look at the action. Home games in April feature the Lotte Giants of Busan (April 1), the Samsung Lions of Daegu (April 2-4), the SK Wyverns of Incheon (April 13-15), the Heroes of Seoul (formerly the Suwon Unicorns) (April 16-18), the Doosan Bears of Seoul (April 27-29) and the Lions again (April 30-May 2). Take in a game.

The Korean Professional Baseball Season is under way, featuring eight teams, a 133game schedule and some unique sports cultural experiences for diamond fans. Korean baseball has been rated at the Triple-A level by most baseball observers, with successful players moving onto either the States or Japan. Korean Pro Baseball has been around since the 1980s, and several Koreans are currently playing in the major leagues in the States. In addition, Korea won the Gold Medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and fell to Japan in extra innings in last year’s World Baseball Classic finals after beating Japan in pool play and Venezuela to reach the finals. Players from the Korean Pro League and Koreans playing in the States and Japan, made up the Korean roster for both events. While basically the same as baseball in the States, there are some differences: -Korean teams have cheerleaders and cheer sections complete with drums. -Instead of the umpire saying “Full count, 3 balls and 2 strikes,” Korean umpires say “Full count, 2 strikes and 3 balls.” -A game tied after 12 innings, finishes as a tie. In the first game of a doubleheader, play is limited to 9 innings. -You don’t see many arguments with the umpires, although that’s changing. The arguments that you do see, usually end with a bow – not a blow. -Korean baseball is affordable. Unlike the States where you have to hock your firstborn son for a good ticket, the most expensive tickets in Korea (the Olympic Stadium in Seoul) are W50,000. Food and souvenirs are also cheap by US standards.

Spirit of Spring & Sea Together This annual Eobang festival is held in Busan, Korea’s second-largest city and largest port. It celebrates the combination of spring and the ocean. The word ‘Eobang’ actually means the lively attitude of the fishermen in the coastal regions, and the deep meaning of this name is reflected in the festival. Not only are many popular tourist destinations, such as Gwangalli beach and the Gwangan bridge, located nearby, but visitors to the festival can try catching fish with their bare hands, take part in a cooking contest and sample interesting kinds of food.

FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES

Drawing Contest Family Musical Folk Plays Singing Contest Bare Hands Fishing Fish Auctions Beach Movie Food Booths

Many people come to the festival especially to eat Busan’s fresh raw fish at incredibly low prices. Outdoor Rec has planned a bus trip to the Eobang Festival on April 24, its biggest day. The fee is $60 a person, which includes round-trip transportation and snacks. The bus will leave at 0600 and return at 0100 the next morning. Advanced registration is required. Call 753-3255/3013 for more information.

Workshops are scheduled for every Friday from 1145-1245 at the ACS classroom in Building 311. In addition to Month of the Military Child, April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. As part of Sexual Assault Prevention Month, Army Community Service is hosting a free Self Defense Workshop for women age 13 and older at the Zoeckler Gym Saturday, April 10, from 1000-1200. Sgt. 1st Class Eric Cromwell, 719th MI, is a certified self-defense instructor and has volunteered to teach the course. He said his training consists of a mixture of martial arts and „street smarts‟ and that no special abilities are needed to attend. He recommends that participants wear workout clothes and tennis shoes. “No sane person ever wants to see a woman in a position where they need self-defense knowledge,” he said. “But sexual assault is a fact of life, and being prepared could prove to be very important.” ACS Family Advocacy is the sponsor of the Self-Defense workshop.

Focus on Volunteers Volunteers save the Humphreys Community thousands of dollars a week, and can be found from offices to sports fields, often working as hard and as long as full-time employees.

Activities include Professional Development Training April 8, a special display at the PX Mall April 19, the Quarterly Recognition Ceremony at the CAC April 20 and Movie April 23.

Space-A… Does it work? Meet the Normans, enjoying the Singapore Zoo courtesy of Space-A travel. CW2 Norman, 538th Ordnance Co., his wife, Melanie and children Keon and Odarri caught a free flight to Yakota AB in Japan from Osan AB. They were planning to catch a free flight to Guam, but decided a vacation in Singapore would be a lot of fun. They spent a week in Singapore before catching a free flight back to Yakota. They had to pay their way back to Korea due to a lack of flights to Osan caused by an Air Force loadmaster competition in the States. Melanie recommends that anyone flying Space-A apply for EML (Environmental Morale Leave). In addition, some flights require a passport for everyone – including soldiers. Make sure you have extra money in case you have to catch a commercial flight back to Korea. Melanie says “Space-A is the way to go.” GENERAL RULES 1-You must be on leave to sign-up for Space-A 2-Civilians must have EML orders 3-Family members are eligible to accompany eligible Sponsors 4-You can select up to five destinations, one of which can be „All‟ 5-You need to carry enough money to pay for a return commercial flight 6-Space-A Travelers are subject to getting „bumped‟ 7-Return travel is not guaranteed
