Snow in July? It really happens… MIKE MOONEY

Family & MWR Marketing Chief

They say if you don’t like the weather in Korea, wait five minutes and it will change. But change so much that you get an isolated snow storm in July? It’s been happening for the past eight years! The forecast shows it will happen again July 25 at the Alaska Mining Company. While the rest of Korea swelters in 90 degree weather and 90 percent humidity, the white stuff flies at the Alaska Mining Company. Inside, Santa Claus himself sits on his throne and poses for free photos. Meanwhile, the Alaska Mining Co. offers a full Christmas Buffet, with turkey, ham and all the trimmings you have been craving for the last three months. While the rest of you have to pay for the buffet, I get mine free, not because I work for FMWR, but because I’m one of those souls whose mother wanted a Christmas present she would never forget and got me. She always said it was like getting a lump of coal in her stocking. Mike Ross, who helped me create Christmas in July, figured that this was my personal revenge for always getting a combined Birthday and Christmas present and a cake with green frosting that said ‘Merry Birthday’ with the ‘Birthday’ in different color frosting and strange handwriting. If your birthday is Christmas Day OR July 25, you also get the buffet for free, if you can prove it. Of course, if it doesn’t snow, the 607th Weather Squadron will pick up the tab. I’m not sure who at the Weather Squadron made the bold guarantee, but someone did, maybe it was Mike Ross, who has money to burn. Merry Christmas in July, everyone.

Boryeong Mud Festival

Remember how angry Mom used to get when you came home covered in mud? Then you found out how much a mud bath costs at the beauty spa and you wondered while she got angry. From July 17-25, getting muddy is not only encouraged, it’s demanded at the annual Boryeong Mud Festival at Daecheon Beach. In fact, if you’re caught not wearing mud, you could very well end up in the Mud Jail. This is the 13th year Daecheon Beach has hosted the Mud Festival, and as many as 3 million people are expected to attend, including visitors from all over the world. The festival was originally created to market Boryeong Mud Products, which are supposed to be as healthy as the expensive mud beauty supplies that come from the Dead Sea. While selling Mud Cosmetics is still a primary feature of the festival, most people come just to get muddy from head to toe and participate in the many games and activities such as mud skiing, mud wrestling and mud bouncing. There are mud slides and pools for adults and kids. Plan to attend and get down and dirty.

Outdoor Rec has two trips schedule to Boryeong

Trips are scheduled for July 17 (0800-1930) and July 24 (0800-2230) Register early, deadlines are July 15 and 22. Bring Korean won for food, souvenirs and special activities as well as a change of clothes, personal care items and a towel. The Middle School/Teen program is also planning a trip for July 17.

Uniquely Korean It’s time to rock in the ROK BY SEONG GU (MARTIN) LEE Marketing Intern

What do you think is the best way to enjoy the summer? Go to movies? Just stay home? Watch TV? Why don‟t get out and enjoy the ROK (Republic of Korea) with some great Rock Music? Being a music fan myself, I would like to recommend two upcoming Rock Festivals. Some great musicians from all over the world will be visiting the ROK over the next two months. The first upcoming festival is in Incheon July 23-25. The Pentaport Festival is the most famous in Korea and this year will feature headliner Hoobastank from the U.S. with such popular songs as „The Reason‟ and „Out of Control.‟ Entrance is 80,000W for one day, 132,00W for 2 & 165,000W for 3. More information is available at www.pentaportrock.com The second concert I would like to recommend is Jisan Valley, scheduled for July 31 and August 1. This festival started last year and is held in a “green” setting, in the middle of nature in Icheon. This year‟s concert will feature the Muse (British), Massive Attack (US), Pet Shop Boys (US), Vampire Weekend (US), the HIATUS (Japan) and Galaxy Express (Korea). Tickets will be 99,000W for 1 day, 158,000W for 2 (which includes camping) and 191,000W for 3 days, which also includes camping. Contact www.valleyrockfestival.com for more information. I hope you‟ll join me to rock the summer away with great music.

In the Neighborhood

Suwon … a City & Fort in one The fortress walls that surround Suwon have almost as many stories as secret gates and ramparts. Some historians say the wall was built to protect the approaches to Seoul following the collapse of the Korean front lines during the Japanese invasion of 1592-99. Others say King Jeongjo built the fortress to prepare for a move of the capital from Seoul to Suwon because the city was strategically positioned to connect Seoul with the Yellow Sea and China. Still others say, the wall and city were built by King Jeongjo to honor and house the remains of his father, Prince Sado, who had been murdered by being locked inside a rice chest, alive. The murderer? Prince Sado’s father, King Yeongjo, who had ordered his son to commit suicide, creating a drama across three generations. It doesn’t matter which story is true. All that matters is that the fortress walls surrounding Suwon offer US visitors a look at Korea’s past and history. The wall is easy to reach by bus, train or car and contains enough historical attractions to fill several days. Next month, In the Neighborhood will look at Haenggung Palace. Have you discovered a ‘Local Attraction’ you would recommend to fellow Soldiers, Families and Civilians? Let us know, and we’ll consider it for a future ‘In the Neighborhood’ feature. Send your suggestion to area3mwrmarketing@korea.army.mil

First Impressions Marketing Intern Megan Clancy is serving in Korea under a special program offered by the EEO program, affording physically disabled persons the opportunity to work for the government. Deaf since birth, Megan has received cochlear implants designed to help her hear. Already a graduate of Gallaudet University and Virginia Commonwealth University-School of Medicine, she is working on another degree at California State Univesity-Long Beach. The following article is her “First Impressions of Korea”. The minute I heard that I had a chance to do a summer internship in Korea, I said “Yes” fast. On Mother's Day, my mom dragged all of us to a restaurant in Los Angeles' Korea Town.

Interns from Korea and the U.S. at Beach Blast, including Megan, second from the Left

Unfamiliar with Korean dishes, I had my stepdad taste the food before I did. I discovered that I liked Kimchi And that Korean meals typically include a lot of vegetable side dishes.

My arrival in Korea was a bit auspicious as the airlines lost my bags and the driver who picked me up had no idea how to get to Humphreys. After several hours of driving around in the dark, a nice Korean cab driver guided us to my new home. During my first week, I had the opportunity to attend the Head Start program where I learned some basic Korean words and got to eat some real Korean food. The book they gave us has been very helpful, I can point where I am trying to go and get help from the Koreans I meet. I really enjoyed the Korean Folk Village and Lotte Mart. I met a little boy, about four, who bowed to me and said something in Korean and I love seeing little Korean girls wearing Hanboks - traditional Korean dress. I have also had the opportunity to experience Beach Blast and have had a lot of fun. On my two days off from work, I have been able to visit Everland and the Seoul Arts Center. I hope to return to those two locations soon, and continue exploring Korean culture during my four-month stay. I would like to see the Changing of the Guard Ceremonies. There are so many things to see and do here in Korea, I know four months won’t be nearly enough… So far, it has been a great experience. I am very happy to have this opportunity. More to follow.

Hello Kitty

Icon has its own Café in Seoul By Jessica Ryan USAG-Humphreys Public Affairs Created by Japanese designer Yuko Shimizu in 1974, Hello Kitty has become an international icon. Just about any product you can think of has been adorned with Hello Kitty’s face. The feline is so popular it has its own restaurant, airport terminal and hospital in Taiwan – and a Hello Kitty Café in Seoul, complete with Hello Kitty cakes and brownies, tables and chairs, cups and party hats. If you (or your daughter) are a Hello Kitty fanatic, then you need to check out the Hello Kitty Café nestled near Hongik University in the heart of the Hongdae shopping district. You’ll know when you find it. Like everything else associated with Hello Kitty, it is bright pink. To get there by subway, get off at Hongik University (Exit 5) and walk to the shopping area across the street. The café is located in an alleyway, so it might take a while to find it. Carry a Hello Kitty picture and someone will point the way. The Café is just one of the ways Seoul has recognized Kitty. In 2008, Building 63 featured an exhibition of Hello Kitty artwork in the Sky Art Museum, and in 2009, the Seongnam Arts Center honored Hello Kitty’s th 35 birthday by showcasing a look at Hello Kitty designs from the past 35 years. Luckily, with the Hello Kitty Café in Seoul, fans can get the Hello Kitty experience all year round. Eat a Hello Kitty Brownie or Tirmasu.

Riding Korea’s Rails Another way to Discover Korea The Korean Railway System crisscrosses the entire peninsula, and is the perfect way to avoid traffic jams and arrive at your destination relaxed and refreshed. And now there’s a new twist to the Korean railroad system – the Party Train. Party Trains run every Tuesday and Saturday, starting in Seoul and stopping along the way (including Pyongtaek) to pick up passengers. The train travels southwest through beautiful countryside.

The first stop is the seaside village of Chunjangdae where you disembark from the train and walk a short distance to a seaside restaurant for lunch and the chance to run barefoot on the beautiful white sand beach. Lunch, of course, is fresh seafood caught that morning. You are also welcome to bring your own. Before and after lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to dance to the music played by a DJ in the special dancing cars. You’ll also be entertained by special Korean “name” entertainment on the train and the beach. On the way back to Pyongtaek, you’ll stop in the village of Gwangcheon, known for the best Kim (dried seaweed) in Korea. After shopping in the open market, it’s back on the Party Train and more views of Korea’s countryside. The Party Train costs about $50 per person. KoRail also offers other trips, including a 3-day trip that includes sleeping cars. The web site listed below, includes an English translation at the click of a button.

Enjoy luxury on your Hawaiian Vacation

Stay at the Hale Koa AFRC

Many soldiers and civilians request a “delay en route when leaving Korea and stop in Hawaii. U.S. Military, Department of Defense Civilians, and their Families can save money on their Hawaiian Vacation by staying at the beautiful Hale Koa Armed Forces Recreation Center. Leave rates range from $87-$144 a night for E-1 through E-5. $108-$178 a night for E-6 thru E-9, WO1-3 and O1-3. $113-$212 per night for field grade officers and Civilian Employees. The price depends on which of six classes of room you select. Full descriptions of rooms as well as reservations which can be made up to a full year in advance are available at the Hale Koa web site: HaleKoa.com.

No Room at the Inn? No Problem There will be times that the Hale Koa is booked solid. What can you do? Ask Hale Koa Reservations Department about its Referral Hotel Program. Through this program, you may book rooms at nearby referral hotels, very nice properties within walking distance of the Hale Koa, with specially negotiated rates for our referred guests. With proper military ID, referral guests may enjoy all of the Hale Koa's food, beverage and entertainment options.
