Happenings is Happening MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief
It’s Official! The USAG-Humphreys Community looks to the monthly Happenings as one of their top two sources for information about the Community. Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the Garrison Headquarters have conducted surveys over the past several months, searching for the ways our Soldiers and Families get their information. While the surveys show that people get information from many different sources, the Garrison Survey said that 46 percent of the respondents get their information from Happenings most of the time, while the FMWR Survey said Happenings was one of the Top 5 methods of getting information for 74 percent of the respondents. The only method to finish ahead of Happenings was E-Mail which includes Notes from the Garrison and the Weekly Flash. Both surveys are considered scientifically accurate because they were randomly distributed throughout the community by a variety of written and electronic methods. What difference does it make? For all of us in Family and MWR Marketing, it lets us know that the work involved in putting Happenings together isn’t ending up on the bottom of bird cages or being spread on the floor to train the dog. For merchants and businesses trying to reach the USAG-Humphreys market, Happenings is where you should be spending your money. We already have a pretty firm advertising base, but there’s always room for more. Every advertising dollar we make stays in Family and MWR and helps offset the cost of printing Happenings. If you have a friend in the Korean Community trying to attract the U.S. Market, tell them to give us a call, and keep reading Happenings…

Continuing Impressions Egrets, robots, children, history & hearing words By Megan Clancy Marketing Intern
I have been in Korea for a little more than a month now and, to say the least, it has been a memorable experience. Korea is not the first foreign country I have visited. My mother was a flight attendant, so I had the opportunity to travel overseas before. But Korea is my first overseas adventure since I received my cochlear implants, being able to hear foreign words makes this experience even more special. I am getting the chance to visit a lot of different attractions in Korea, both as part of my job in Marketing and on my own. I am developing some life-long memories in the process. One place that was especially moving was the Korean War Memorial. I had a teacher who was a Korean War veteran, and much of what he told us was brought to life at the Memorial. I visited Gwacheon National Science Museum in Seoul which has some impressive exhibits about genetics, technology and robotics. I loved watching tiny robots dancing in synchronization to music. That’s something I'll remember for a long time. When I'm around Korean children and toddlers, I'm impressed that some of them bow to me, even if they are only a year old. When I was on a field trip with SAS to the Asan Spavis spa, I took a peek at what Korean kids eat for lunch. They eat rice, kimchi, sushi, vegetables and fruit, much healthier than what American children eat. I’ve bought a Korean bathing suit and a pair of leggings, learned my way around on the subway and train and even learned about little fish that eat the dead skin off the bottom of your feet (called “doctor fish”). Next, I want to visit the rice fields. I have never seen those in America. I want to learn how rice grows. I love seeing the white egrets roaming around those fields. Now the fields are green, but soon they will turn brown and be ready for harvest. That’s another memory waiting to happen. Marketing Intern Megan Clancy is serving in Korea under a special program offered by the EEO program, affording physically disabled persons the opportunity to work for the government. Deaf since birth, Megan has received cochlear implants designed to help her hear. Already a graduate of Gallaudet University and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, she is working on another degree at California State UniversityLong Beach. The following article represents her continuing impressions of Korea.
One Readers’ Favorite Memorial Site & birthplace of Korean Patriot Yu Gwan-Sun By Terrence E Durbin USAG-Humphreys Master Planning
Independence Hall near Cheonan is an amazing place with more than 5,000 years of Korean history preserved and shared in comfortable surroundings. Here’s a link to an English-language web site for those who may be interested in more information about Independence Hall. http://i815.or.kr/EN/ <blockedhttp://i815.or.kr/EN/> However, there are even more reasons why Cheonan is worth visiting… I picked up an English-language brochure that pointed the way to another museum about 10 km further east on Route 21 from Independence Hall. It is the Memorial Site and birthplace of Patriot Yu Gwan-Sun, a young lady who gave her life in the belief of freedom from tyranny. The birthplace and memorial are about 14 km apart, both are worth visiting. Patriot Yu Gwan-Sun participated in the, March 1, 1919, Independence demonstrations in Seoul. The Japanese closed the schools, and she returned home where she organized a follow-up demonstration on April 1, 1919 The Japanese killed several peaceful demonstrators, including her parents. When she confronted the police, they arrested her and she was charged, convicted and sentenced to 3 years in prison. She continued to organize the Independence Movement from prison, but was tortured and killed before she reached her 18th birthday. This young woman martyred for the cause of Korean Independence and serves as an inspiration to young people who have not had to struggle for freedom. She certainly lived up to our code of conduct when captured by the enemy. I highly recommend a trip to both these sites. The trip to Yu Gwan-Sun's memorial involves hiking up the hill to her memorial tomb and to the top of the hill to the beacon site. The night before the April 1 demonstration, she lit a beacon on the top of the hill which served as an example for people to light beacons on other hills throughout the region.

Uniquely Korean
History comes alive at Gyeongju BY SEONG GU (MARTIN) LEE Marketing Intern
If you want to experience true Korean Culture and History this summer, visit Gyeongju, located on the southeastern corner of Korea. Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla (57 BC ~ 935 AD). Throughout this period, Korea consisted of 3 ancient kingdoms, Goguryo, Baekje and Silla. Each kingdom had its own culture and each wanted to control more of the peninsula. After a 7-year war, Silla over took Goguryo and Baekje, propelling Shilla into the largest and most powerful kingdom. Gyeongju is the home of many ancient buildings, tombs, statues and historic museums that preserve “Old Korea”. Gyeongju is the best city to visit if you are interested in Korea’s ancient culture. Hundreds of Korean students as well as foreigners explore this city every year to absorb all it has to offer. One of the most popular attractions is the ancient observatory, Cheomseongdae, and was once used by astronomers to study the stars and planets, a magnificent feat for astronomers 1500 years ago. Seokgulam and Bulguksa are two famous Buddhist temples to visit, and there are dozens of other attractions. To fully enjoy Gyeongju, I recommend the use of a rented bicycle since all the major attractions are in close proximity. There is public transportation, however, it is expensive if you are on a tight budget.
Unlocking JeJu Secrets No logical explanation for “Ghost Road” By Mike Mooney Marketing Chief This is the second story in a series of articles about ‘Must See’ attractions on Korea’s Island of the Gods.
First, let me make it clear that I’m not a big believer in wandering spirits or ghosts. But I’m also at a loss to explain what happens on JeJu’s Ghost Road. At first, I thought our driver was taking us to see a collection of stone statues that represent some of the 1,800 Gods found on JeJu. But as we reached the bottom of the hill, he put the car in neutral and turned to look out the back window. Suddenly, the vehicle started going back up the hill at a rapid pace. A plaque at the site explains that the “Ghost Road” or “Mysterious Road” was discovered by a cab driver in 1980 who was giving a newlywed couple a tour. When he stopped at the bottom of the hill, his cab suddenly started moving back up the hill. The “Ghost Road” is located about 7 kilometers from the JeJu Airport on the 1000 Road that connects Jeju City and Seogwipo City via Eorimok and Yeongshil on Mt. Halla. Some of the bus tours visit the “Ghost Road” and yes, the buses climb the hill backwards, too. Some people say that the “Ghost Road” is an optical illusion, and that the horizon makes it seem like you’re going uphill when you’re actually going downhill. Spoil Sports! Besides, I walked the “Ghost Road” in search of an explanation, and it was definitely uphill. Check it out for yourself…
Getting Around Many Americans elect to rent a car, while others take tour buses. Another way is to hire a taxi & driver (about $100 a day) who can take you to the out-of-the-way attractions and even arrange for your meals. Talk to your hotel front desk or the hotel’s concierge.
U.S. Airline Alliance on the second floor of the Soldier Support Center (One Stop) offers tours to JeJu on a regular basis. Over the next couple of months, Happenings will offer a series of articles disclosing some of the Island’s best kept secrets. For ticketing information, call Airline Alliance at 753-7725.

In the Neighborhood Suwon’s Haenggung Palace Second in a series There’s a lot to see just up the road in Suwon, one of the easiest places to reach from Humphreys by subway, train or bus, Suwon is known as the Walled City because of the large and historic stone wall that surrounds the metropolis. One of the more interesting attractions is Haenggung Palace, a temporary palace built by King Jeongjo to escape the bustle of Seoul as well as to rest following one of the constant battles with the Japanese. When the king was not in residence, the Palace was used by his delegated officials as a base of government. Haenggung was also used for a 60th birthday party for King Jeongjo's mother, Princess Hong, as well as for holding feasts for elderly citizens and to administer national exams. The palace was built in 1789, but was expanded between 1794 and 1796. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into what it was like to be King in Korea during the 18th Century. Much of the palace was destroyed by the Japanese during the Colonial Period, but was restored between 1996-2003. There is a small fee for touring the palace (1,000 won for adults, 700 won for teens and 500 won for children. Those under 6 or over 65 are free). The palace is open from 0900-1800 during summer months and 0900-1700 during the winter. There is a changing of the guard ceremony at the castle gate at 1400 each Sunday from March-November as well as a daily demonstration of 24 different martial arts routines used in King Jeongjo's time. The martial arts demonstration is held at 1100 every day except Monday from March-November and continues on Saturdays and Sundays in December. Most of the palace buildings are occupied by life-size figurines dressed in period costumes performing period tasks. Make sure to take your camera for the countless photo opportunities. Especially interesting, are the guard’s quarters with a wide collection of uniforms and weapons. Next month – Suwon’s many gates Have you discovered a ‘Local Attraction’ you would recommend to fellow Soldiers, Families and Civilians? Taste of Korea
Korean Fruit - Fresh, Delicious It’s a well known fact that the only way to truly experience a foreign culture is to taste that culture. Too many Americans are afraid of the “ies & tangs” – Kalbi, Bulgogi, Kimchi, Dakgalbi, Galbitang, Gamjatang, Haemultang, etc. There’s one place you can’t go wrong with the taste of Korea, however. The fruit! Many of the Korean fruits are the same as you find in the States, and yet, they’re not the same. This month will see the ripening of Cheonan Grapes. You can find grapes all over the world, but Cheonan Grapes are something special. First is the size – about the same as a cherry tomato. Then there’s the color – a very deep, almost black purple. What is really unique is the TASTE. Cheonan grapes are thick skinned (in fact, most people don’t eat the skin) and have seeds. But the meat is as sweet and tender as any grape you’ll ever eat. Since Cheonan is just down the road, you’ll see Cheonan Grapes for sale at roadside stands and in the Commissary. And, as with all fresh produce, wash it before you enjoy this Unique Taste of Korea.

Team members needed for upcoming AFAP The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) has a long history of making a positive difference in the lives of Soldiers, Families, Youth and even Civilian Employees. Held annually throughout the Army, AFAP brings people together to discuss and examine Quality of Life Issues. Sometimes, those issues are under control of the local commander and can be solved by the commander directing a change. But many times, the issues deal with Army or Theater regulations, directives or guidance that is beyond the control of the local command. Through AFAP, those issues get pushed up the chain of command, sometimes all the way to Department of the Army, where they are examined and, in many cases, solved. For AFAP to work, however, your involvement is essential. Volunteers are needed to direct subject areas, serve on discussion panels, record recommendations and to share their ideas and concerns in a forum designed to identify and fix problems. The Humphreys AFAP will be in October, but the work has already begun to identify issues and put together panels that will be required. Are you willing to become a member of the AFAP team? Do you have issues you would like to present? Can you spare two days to become a part of the solution instead of a quiet sufferer? AFAP boxes will be appearing throughout the Community over the next few months. Meanwhile, contact ACS and find out what you can do to make this year’s AFAP bigger, with long lasting influence. ACS has a role for you to play. Contact us today!

50 Humphreys Youth to experience Korean Summer School this month The school year doesn’t start for Humphreys American School until the end of August, but a total of 50 Humphreys youngsters is Grades 3-6 will be hitting the classroom for a week in a Korean Elementary School early this month. Sponsored by the USAG-Humphreys Good Neighbor Program, Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province and the Pyeongtaek Culture Center, the program pairs Humphreys students with Pyeontaek Elementary Students at the Yichung Elementary School. There are two sessions for the program – Aug. 3-7 and Aug 10-14. Each session will include 25 American and 15 Korean students. The students will attend school from 0900-1300 Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and from 0900-1600 Thursday. Each day has activities designed for the American and Korean children to share cultures and to learn more about each other. Children will learn how to make Korean food, sing together in a joint chorus, visit Gyeongbok Palace and Insa-dong in Seoul, learn about traditional Korean dance and Taekwondo and learn about Korea itself. On Friday, the Korean students and their parents will visit the American student’s home. Saturday sessions will include a graduation ceremony, horse riding, wearing Korean armor and shooting arrows. American parents and Family members will be invited to the Thursday trip to Seoul and Saturday’s graduation. To see if there’s any room remaining in either session, contact Miss Chong at 754-6130.

Escape to Paradise
By Lee Hye-Yong (Judy) Public Affairs Office Intern Like my American co-workers in the Public Affairs Office, I wanted to escape the heat and humidity of the Korean summer. My Family and I picked Paradise … more specifically Fortune Island in the Philippines. Before economic hard times, Fortune Island was pretty much the exclusive turf of the rich who came the Matabungkay area of the Philippines in their helicopters, airplanes or yachts. However, the economy has left empty hotel rooms and great discounts that have made the resort more affordable to people. Fortune Island is inhabited by chattering monkeys in the surrounding mountains, beautiful white sand beaches, emerald green waters and buildings that look like Greek Temples. In addition to lazing around under the clear blue skies, you can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing in the clear blue sea. While you are snorkeling, your Filipino hosts make a tasty lunch which you can enjoy in the Greek Temple surroundings. In the afternoon, you can enjoy sea fishing and eating freshly caught sashimi right on the boat. One thing you’ll always remember is the beautiful sea world with the wide variety of tropical fish and sea creatures that you’ll encounter on your dives. The Philippine Islands are only a short flight from Korea and you enter an entirely new world of lush tropical fruit, clear blue skies and refreshing sea breezes. I strongly recommend it as a great escape for everyone.
