August a month of change MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief
There were lots of Hellos and Goodbyes in Family & MWR Marketing during the month of August, starting with the departure of our boss, Steve Ryan, along with his boss (i.e., wife Ann) and daughter, Jessica. Jessica didn‟t belong to us. She actually served as an intern for Lori Yerdon in PAO. But, in addition to being a good friend of my daughter, Chuha, Jessica was a regular contributor to Happenings. In fact, she has two bylines in this month‟s magazine, one on Asan and the other on the Teddy Bear Museum in Seoul (You may remember she also brought us a story on the Hello Kitty Café in Seoul). In addition to the Ryans, we also lost a Korean Intern and one of the finest summer hires we have ever had. Lee, Song-Gu, is off to Germany for another year of school. Martin, as he called himself, turned out to be a great talent with a lot of imagination and creativity. His banners and posters were always first rate, and he will be sorely missed. So will PAO Intern Lee, Hye-Yong, Judy or the Cookie Monster to her friends. Like Jessica, Judy worked for Lori but still contributed to Happenings. Judy is graduating from college and looking for a job, hopefully with the U.S. Army. I hope she finds one. She is a great talent and a person who will bring enthusiasm to every endeavor. Then there‟s our Summer Hire, Nicole Velez, who will now be our “Teen Correspondent”. What a find! I have had some very good summer hires in the past, but Nicole has to be the most creative and fastest learner of all. She tackled everything we threw her way and finished each project with speed, efficiency and pride. While each of these talented people will be missed, we are also welcoming a new wave of talent. We finally found a replacement for Sarah Dobson. He‟s Jeffrey Hubbard, whose wife, Alicia, works in JAG. This will be a new venture for us – a male military spouse. He has the experience we need in the new design programs for the web. We are also getting not one, but two, replacements for Martin. Their names are „Sue‟ Hee-Soc and „Gun‟ Lee, Gun-Hack, college students at Nam-Seoul and Pyongtaek Universities respectively. Life is Change, In Case You Didn’t Know!

Humphreys welcomes second group of Korean College Interns The partnership between USAGHumphreys and two local Korean universities to provide college internships to deserving students has entered the second stage with a dozen students joining the US workforce. The dream of recently departed On the cover … Director of Family & MWR Steve Ryan, the internship program started in February with seven interns in FMWR and Public Affairs. That group graduated in August and has been replaced by a dozen students from Pyeongtaek University and Nam-Seoul University in Choenon. “Everyone was more than pleased with the skills and contributions of the first set of Interns, and more agencies wanted to get involved,” said Internship Program Coordinator Denise Chappell from Army Community Service. “This time, FMWR Marketing, PAO, Outdoor Rec, the Child Development Center, Youth Sports and Army Community Service have elected to continue in the internship program and DPW, DPTMS, Contracting and Humphreys American School have requested and received an Intern of their own.” Franklin Casanova III taken in Seoul at the War Memorial Participating students are majoring in areas such as American studies, Marketing, Business or Museum. Taken June 18, 2010, he is the son of Maria and Franklin sports and undergo a rugged interview process through their respective universities in order to be selected for the program. Casanova, C Co. 602nd. They will work at USAG-Humphreys for six months and are actually paying the universities in order to participate. Professors from the schools monitor their progress and give grades based on how well the interns perform.

Continuing Impressions By Megan Clancy Family & MWR Marketing Intern
Korea continues to amaze me. I was so excited when I finally set foot inside the famous Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. As soon as I saw the palace itself, I was finally convinced that I was really in Korea. I was in awe when I saw the evil-looking statues that were supposed to keep evil forces away from the palace. It was incredible to be able to see inside the buildings. I saw beds, tea sets and furniture that the royal families used. There were even sophisticated paintings on the walls, which were mostly red and gold in color with elaborate patterns. When you go inside these buildings, you realize that you’re really in the Orient – especially with the number of dragon images in the paintings. Not only is Korea is well-known for its history, but also its festivals. I had the chance to visit the Boryeong Mud Festival in July. As a kid I would have avoided mud since I was a girly girl. But that went out the window at Boryeong. I wanted to blend in with the crowd, so I became a big fan of mud. Boryeong mud is renowned for being good for the skin, so I took the liberty of spreading mud all over my body, including my face. I wasn’t the only one. In fact, I found it hilarious that there was a mud prison for people who were NOT covered with mud. As you can imagine, the prison was a popular photo spot. I was positively thrilled when I went down the giant mud slide with my buddy to the pool of mud at the bottom, a big help in the hot summer sun. After visiting some of the amazing attractions and festivals, I realized that Korea has so much to offer visitors from around the world. This California girl will take home memories of Korea that will last a lifetime. Marketing Intern Megan Clancy is serving in Korea under a special program offered by the EEO program, affording physically disabled persons the opportunity to work for the government. Deaf since birth, Megan has received cochlear implants designed to help her hear. Already a graduate of Gallaudet University and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, she is working on another degree at California State University-Long Beach. The article above represents her continuing impressions of Korea.

History by Teddy Bears By Jessica Ryan USAG-Humphreys Public Affairs
Growing up near Washington DC, I was always dragged by my Family to history museums in the city. As a child, I thought these museums were pretty boring. You can say I was unappreciative but, let’s be honest here. When you were a kid, you would rather be going to history museums or going to more fun places like the toy store? Luckily, the Teddy Bear Museum in Namsan Seoul Tower in Seoul sparks children’s interest in history by using teddy bears. The museum chronicles Seoul’s past and present by displaying teddy bears in famous historical and modern scenes. In its first exhibit hall, the adorable bears dress up in ancient style clothing, recreate scenes of Seoul’s past, and depict important figures in history. Don’t be fooled though. While you might think teddy bears are just cutesy and childish, these bears look pretty fierce when they dress up in traditional Korean garments. In the second exhibit hall, visitors can view teddy bears in different settings of modern Seoul. Famous city landmarks such as Seoul Grand Park and the Blue House (the president’s home) as well as pop culture icons like NANTA and the B-Boys are represented in this area. The B-Boys bears even spin around. There is also a “History of Teddy Bears” exhibit featuring famous teddy bears. Believe it or not, the Teddy Bear Museum provides entertaining and educational experience for both children and adults. My father, who is pretty embarrassed to admit he went to the museum, even said that the displays and descriptions were very informative. The Teddy Bear Museum is located in Namsan Seoul Tower. The admission price is W8,000 for adults, W6,000 for teenagers and W4,000 for children 13 years old and younger. Purchase the observatory package which includes admission to the museum and the tower’s observatory deck and view the city from 777 feet in the air. Who ever thought you could learn Seoul history from a Teddy Bear?

Haeundae is Korea’s Best Beach Mike Mooney Marketing Chief
Any discussion about Busan, particularly during the hot months, has to start with the beautiful Haeundae Beach. Located about a 30 minute taxi ride from the Busan train station, Haeundae offers white sand, clear blue waters and a great opportunity to see the old and new Korea side-by-side. Taking its lessons from European beaches, all you need to enjoy Haeundae is a little bit of won (about 20,000 for two people) to get a beach umbrella, two chaise lounges, a sand mat and a couple of beach towels). And, yes, the vendors understand English as well as Chinese, Japanese, Russian and other languages. Haeundae Beach is heavily patrolled by life guards from both the shore and the sea, and is considered one of Korea’s safest beaches. It is open all year round, although winter activities center around a series of music festivals and other “out of the water” activities. The beach is lined with popular restaurants that serve a wide variety of western food. If you are itching for an excuse to go on the Bullet train, Busan is well worth a visit. Coming to Korea Sturgis Rally starts Sep 17 The resort community of Taebaek (the same place Korea hosts a snow festival each winter) will be turned into an Asian version of Sturgis, South Dakota, Sep 17-21 with the annual Sturgis Asia Motorcycle Rally. Activities will include a bike parade, competitions (hill climbing, mini-moto and custom bikes), a , fashion show, stunt shows, booths, concerts and, unique to Sturgis-Asia, Korean Cultural Shows. Formula One Grand Prix next month Korea will host its first-ever Formula One Grand Prix race next month at the new facility in Yeongam in southwest Korea. The race is scheduled for October 22-24. The web site for the race is f1korea.go.kr. It is currently only available in Korean, but both Outdoor Rec and Marketing are working on gathering English information concerning schedules and tickets. Information will be released as soon as it’s available through Garrison Notes and the Weekly Flash. The Grand Prix arena will hold up to 1.2 million people, so tickets shouldn’t be a problem. Watch for updated information.
Riding Korea’s Rails Korea’s Bullet Train an Experience you need to try Train travel is a new experience to many Americans. But in Korea, it is frequently the “only way to go.” Korean trains are inexpensive, clean, safe and faster that either driving or taking a bus. This is especially true when it comes to Korea’s KTX (Korea Trains eXpress) Trains, also called the Bullet Trains. Zipping along at more than 300 kilometers per hours (180 miles per hour), the Bullet Train puts Busan less than 3 hours from Humphreys. The only problem is that you have to go to Choenon-Asan or take the regular train from Pyongtaek to Daejon to catch the bullet. Future expansion is expected to see a KTX station closer to Humphreys, but that’s for your next assignment in Korea. Meanwhile, it’s worth the effort to get yourself and your Family to either Asan or Daejon to try it out. US Airline Alliance in the Soldier Support Center (One Stop) sells KTX tickets at a discount, so you don’t even have to worry about making yourself understood or having enough Korean won on hand to get the correct connections. Plan your trip for a weekday to get the cheapest rate, and get a further discount with the “Family Seat Package” four seats together facing each other. Once you’re aboard, you will enjoy unjostled serenity in a comfortable seat (the airlines should take a lesson), Korea’s countryside zipping past your window (which is clean enough to take pictures through), clean air and quiet. Put the Bullet Train on your “must do before you leave Korea” list.

Happenings Happenings Is most effective way to reach the USAG-Humphreys Market!
Two mass-circulated surveys, one conducted by Family & MWR and the other by USAG-Humphreys show that the top methods people get their news about what’s happening in the Community is through direct E-Mail Notes from the Garrison, In The Fight, etc) and the FMWR monthly Happenings magazine. E-Mail and Happenings were the 1st & 2nd choices in the Garrison Survey. In the FMWR Survey, Happenings was No. 1 followed by E-Mail at No. 2. Direct E-Mail and Happenings were the only two of 15 different choices to draw more than a 50 percent response from survey participants.
What does it mean? If you’re a business trying to reach the Humphreys Market, Happenings is where you need to spend your advertising dollar. Please contact advertising manager Miss Chong, So-Kyong at 0505-754-6545 or 031-619-6545 for more information about rates and deadlines.

Taste of Korea
Bae – An apple that tastes like a pear Pyrus pyrifolia is actually a pear that is native to China, Japan, and Korea. The tree's edible fruit is known by many names, including: Asian pear, nashi or nashi pear, Korean pear, Japanese pear, Taiwan pear, sand pear or pear apple. Regardless of what you call it, you will find it delicious and a great Taste of Korea. As you travel in the countryside around Humphreys, you will see orchards like the one pictured above with golden paper hanging in the trees. This paper is protecting the delicious and delicate pear apple in its infant stage. Many of those fruits will be picked when they’re about the size of a tennis ball and exported to the U.S. where they will be sold individually for $1 or more. But here in Korea, we get to enjoy pear apples when they’re fully grown and about the size of a softball. Pear apples are generally eaten raw and not baked in pies or made into jams because they have a high-water content and a crisp, grainy texture -- very different from the buttery European or U.S. varieties of pear. Contrary to popular belief, they are not a cross between an apple and pear, but their shape and crisp texture are reminiscent of apples. They are commonly served raw and peeled as a dessert and frequently given as Chusok gifts, since they are usually harvested by hand just before the Chusok holidays. You will be able to purchase pear apples at roadside stands, in the commissary or the open markets. As with grocery stores in the States, they are usually sold individually but, for Chusok, you can buy them by the case. They can last for several weeks or more in a cold, dry place, although they usually get eaten before you have time to store them. If you haven’t ever tried a pear apple, do yourself a favor. They are a Great Taste of Korea.

Pro Bowlers Tour Trio of Pros headed for Strike Zone Professional Bowlers Parker Bohn III, Sean Rash & Jason Belmonte are headed for the Strike Zone Bowling Center Friday, September 10, where they will share their knowledge and bowling skills with adults and children alike. This is the second trip to Humphreys for Bohn and Rash, while Belmonte, a 2-handed Australian bowler, who won the Professional Bowler’s Association (PBA) Rookie of the Year title in 2008-9, will be making his first visit. The trio will be working primarily with kids from 1300-1700 and with adults in the opening night of the Friday Night Bowling League starting at 1800. Strike Zone manager Rob Victorine is working with the Humphreys Elementary and Middle School, Youth Services and the Child Development Center to introduce as many local youngsters as possible to the pros and bowling. All bowling linage and shoe rental will be free during the Exhibition. During the Friday Night Bowling League, the pros will be rolling with league members and serve as league bowler pacers. Belmonte became the first two-handed bowler to win a PBA Tour event by capturing the Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic which helped him win Rookie of the Year honors. He started bowling 2-handed as a toddler. Bohn has won almost $3 million as a pro bowler and was named Bowler of the Year in 1999 and 2001-2. He has 31 pro titles, has thrown 85 sanctioned 300 games and is one of the few pros to roll a perfect game on television. He is also a member of the PBA Hall of Fame. Rash has won almost a half a million dollars in his five years on the pro tour and is a four-time Team USA member. He was also a 2-time All American at Wichita State. In addition to answering questions, signing autographs and posing for pictures, the Pros will also be demonstrating a collection of trick shots. Come to the Strike Zone for this unique opportunity

Super Gym hosting CISM warm-ups Korea will serve as host of the 50th Men’s and first-ever Conseil du Sport Militaire (CISM) Women’s Basketball Championships Sep 9-17, and both the U.S. and Korean Women’s teams will play warm-up contests at the Super Gym. The U.S. team will meet an All-Star team at 1830 Sep 3, while the U.S. and Korean CISM teams meet at 1500 Sep 4. Both games are free. The U.S. CISM team is basically the Armed Forces All-Stars, selected from the 2010 Armed Forces tournament which was won by Army. Seven of the players on the U.S. team wear Army Green. The All Stars who will play in the Sep 3 game will include players from Humphreys Lady Dawgs and pick-ups from Osan, Yongsan and other Korea post-level teams. Founded Feb 18, 1948, the International Military Sports Council (CISM) is one of the largest multidisciplinary organizations in the world. It organizes various sporting events for the armed forces of its 135 member countries. Soldiers, who may previously have met on the battle field, now meet in friendship on the sports playing field. This is in accordance with the philosophy and the ideals which were set in CISM’s mission statement in 1998, signed by all the member countries. CISM’s ultimate goal is to contribute to world peace by uniting armed forces through sports. The CISM motto is “Friendship through Sport.”

Military Families of the Year
Nominations now open for Military Families of the Year The nomination period for the 2010 USAG-Humphreys Military Families of the Year is now open, with all nominated Families to be recognized at the annual Military Families of the Year Recognition Ceremony at the Community Activity Center Saturday, November 6. Initiated last year to kick off Military Family Month, a total of 15 Families were recognized last year, with three Families identified as “Families of the Year”. The nomination process is simple, as are the qualifications. Just send FMWR Marketing the name of the Family and a brief description of what makes the Nominated Family an example of “What a Military Family Can and Should Be.” Rank makes no difference, last year’s Nominees ran from Private to Lieutenant Colonel. The only change from last year’s ceremony, will be that least one of the three “Families of the Year” will be an E-6 or below. That changed is based on suggestions received following last year’s event. All nominated Families will receive an 11” by 17” framed color photo of their Family while the three “Families of the Year” will receive a range of additional prizes. Step one, however, is to gather the names of USAG-Humphreys Military Families who symbolize what a Military Family can and should be. In addition to Humphreys, Army Families from Suwon and Osan Airbase can be nominated. Nominations close September 30. Professional photos of all nominees will be taken in mid-October. Nominated Families will receive a form to be completed, there will also be a period for everyone to send in an endorsement in support of the nominations. The final nomination packages will be given to Army Community Service (ACS) which will form a panel of USAG-Humphreys dignitaries to select the three Families of the Year. Please send your nominations to area3mwrmarketing@korea.army.mil and to mikeinkorea2@yahoo.com.

From the mouth of babes Ten-year old (almost 11) By Felipa Benjamin, daughter of FMWR Marketing’s Kyra Rodriguez, was one of about 40 Humphreys Elementary School 3rd-6th grade students who had the opportunity to experience a week of Korean Summer School last month under a special Good Neighbor Program. Here’s what she and the other students experienced.
Korean Summer School was Fun & Culture rolled into one By Felipa Benjamin
Humphreys American School Student
My week as a student in the Yinchug Elementary School was a lot of fun and taught me a lot about Korean Culture. It was something I will always remember, and something I am very glad I had the opportunity to do. Yinchug Elementary is a school turned Cultural Center designed to see and experience Korean culture. While the school was interesting, even more interesting was the places we got to go, the food we got to eat and the things we got to try. We went to Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul, and to Insa-dong Road. This road is almost like a market road. After the tour of the palace we walked to the restaurant where we ate bulgogi, which means fire meat, we also ate noodles. After eating, we had the chance to make some crafts, either a mother of pearl mirror or a fish bowl candle. I made the mirror. It was super because you could use your imagination and make your own design. You stick on the pieces of pearl on the front of the mirror in a design. Then after sticking that on, you coated it with glue. I liked making my own design. After that, we got on the bus to go home. The day that I thought was the most memorable was the graduation day (Saturday). It was fun because they let you ride horses, put on Korean amour, shoot arrows, make rice cake and try on Korean Hanboks. We also had the chance to meet Korean kids our age and to share ideas and culture. The whole week was a great experience, and I am very happy I had the chance to do it. I hope that the other people that go had as much fun as I did.
New voice of the Humphreys Teener Nicole Velez moved to Korea a month ago and went to work as a Summer Hire in FMWR Marketing. Nicole is a “Teener”, a teen ager who has graduated from high school and yet unable to participate in Soldier programs like BOSS. In many ways, she is the forgotten market, too old for Youth Services and too young for most other programs. She has agreed to become our Teener Correspondent, letting FMWR know what other Teeners are saying and helping us meet their needs. If you’re a Teener, you can contact Nicole at veleznicole4@hotmail.com. In her first article, she talks about her Family’s move to Korea and her first impressions.
By Nicole Velez
FMWR Marketing Summer Hire & Teener Correspondent
An overseas move is seldom effortless, and is usually accompanied by anxious feelings and unanswered questions for the whole Family. Yet, as a young adult, I can say that moving can often be extra wearisome. It feels as if we have more to give up, and our attachments to people back in the states makes it difficult to jump into something new and unknown. However, experiencing the new and different is what helps create a well-rounded person. Ever heard of the phrase "what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger"? Well, immersing yourself in something new, like the wondrous Korean culture, certainly will not take you hostage, it will open your eyes to the Korean way of life. Not many teens unassociated with the military can truthfully say that they have had the luxury of
Jeil’s Used Cars
JOHNNY KIM
traveling around the world. Furthermore, most of these same people will never have the opportunity to do so. I have been living in Korea for a little over a month, and can honestly say that I like it much better than I thought I would. Koreans are always so friendly and pleasant. They even have a special way of handing something to a person, so it’s respectful. Likewise, communicating with Koreans almost never poses a great challenge because they attempt to understand, no matter how little English they speak or understand. Then there’s the food. It is absolutely wonderful! Meals in Korea are always very engaging, with the entrée and side dishes sorted out in the center. Because of that, I’ve been able to improve my chopstick-using skills by eating out with my Family. Finally, the Hangul language is so intriguing to me. So far I've learned all the consonants, vowels and a few words thanks to the help of a brilliant Korean intern that works in the same office as I do. My goal is to eventually be capable of waltzing up to a Korean friend and speaking to them in their own language. I haven’t had the chance to explore much of Korea. Of the few places I’ve seen so far, my favorite is the Bongeun-Sa Buddhist temple in Seoul. Bongeun-Sa temple is located directly across from the Coex Mall. As I strolled through the front gates, it seemed as if I had entered a different world. Many people sat quietly praying, while monks played music and chanted mantras that could be heard throughout the temple. A visit to any Buddhist temple is sure to grant one a very distinct and peaceful experience. Attempting to learn about a different culture always affects you for the better. If you never try, then you might lose the opportunity to achieve joy by a means that you are not accustomed to. Someone once said, “Our attitude towards life determines life’s attitude towards us”, and those words of wisdom still apply. So, no matter your age, do not feel anxious to encounter new and strange things; enjoy the time you have left in Korea! Twenty years down the road, you absolutely won’t regret it. If you’re a fellow Teener, E-mail me and let me know about your experiences.
ARE YOU A TEENER?
If you’re a Teener, if you’re too old for the Middle School/Teen program and not eligible for Soldier programs like BOSS. Let Family & MWR know your concerns by contacting your Teener Correspondent, Nicole Velez at veleznicole4@hotmail.com.
