What makes an ideal Family? MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief
In early November, Area III will hold a very special ceremony at the Community Activity Center, recognizing our Military Families of the Year. This is a program we started last year as part of Military Family Month. We recognized a total of 15 Military Families, and further recognized three Families as Most Outstanding Military Families of the Year. The role of Families in today’s Army is much different than it was when I wore a green suit. In my days, the Army had the attitude that Families were a personal problem and that if the Army wanted you to have a wife and kids, they would have issued them to you, along with your rifle and gas mask. Today, however, the Army has recognized the role of the Family … so much so, that it has created the Army Family Covenant. We, now, host our Military Families of the Year ceremony, recognizing Families you say best represent What a Military Family Can and Should Be. Which is an intentionally broad qualifier because the ideal Military Family can be many things, from the Family heavily involved in church, youth or volunteer activities to the Family that simply does everything together. Personally, I am very impressed with the Family that juggles work, school and sports schedules and still finds time to climb in the car or gather at the bus stop to see and do things together. Which, Area III, Family best exemplifies your concept of the Ideal Military Family? Take the time to nominate them for this year’s recognition ceremony. Just send us your nomination by Oct 10 and join us Nov 6 for the annual ceremony.

Halloween in Korea Halloween a growing Korean holiday Although Halloween is not traditionally celebrated in Korea, many Korean businesses know a good thing when they see it and you’ll find a lot of great ways to celebrate at Korean clubs, restaurants and amusement parks. Everland, Seoul Land and Lotte World all have great Halloween activities for young and old alike, and poplar clubs and large hotels throughout Seoul and Songtan will have Halloween Parties. Everland’s celebration started in September and runs through Nov 1. This year’s celebration is titled “Halloween Adventure Stamp Rally.” Visitors are given stamp books at the entrance. They need to get three stamps from any 10 select attractions and then navigate through a 100-meter-long (328 feet) Halloween Maze. At the end of the maze, they will be greeted with cheers as well as stickers and candy. There’s also a Halloween Parade three times a day. Seoul Land has costumed characters wandering the park and giving away colored balls. If you collect all five colored balls you can get a free plate of black ink squid pasta or candy and toys. There are also dance performances by ghost characters throughout the theme park, and laser shows, fireworks and rock concerts will be held at 2030 nightly through the end of the month. Lotte World has a parade at 1730 daily and a Halloween-themed musical. The parade includes 80 characters, including monsters, witches and even Dracula. At the theme park’s Garden Stage, a musical titled “Love of Dracula” is performed at 12:30 and 8:30 p.m. daily except Mondays. During the show, performers in Halloween costumes do acrobatics and dance. You can check the various hotels in the Seoul area for other Halloween activities.
Unique Korean Superstitions Magpie in morning means Lucky Day Korea, like every other country, has its own superstitions. And since October is the month of ghosts and goblins, let’s explore some of the superstitions unique to Korea. The first involves the magpie, those colorful and noisy birds found all over USAG-Humphreys. Koreans believe if you see or hear a magpie in the morning, you’ll have a Lucky Day. On the other hand, if you see a raven or crow, look out! Luck won’t be with you. Here are some other superstitions found in Korea: If you sleep in a room with a fan running and the window closed, you won’t wake up. You can’t take a shower for 24 hours after getting a shot or you’ll die. You can’t wash your hair on the day of an exam or all your smarts will be washed out of your head. If you dream of a pig, you will have good luck. Dreaming of a dog is bad luck. If you cut your hair, you will grow taller … unless your mother jumped over you when you were a baby, in which case you will never be tall. To ace an exam, eat yut, a form of sticky Korean candy, beforehand so the answers will stick in your head and the pencil will stick to your hand. But don’t twirl your pencil. That makes you stupid. The meat from the neck of a chicken will make you a better singer. If you cut your toenails after dark, they can turn into a ghost or spirit that may kill you. If your child loses a tooth, it must be tossed onto the roof. Avoid the number 4 at all costs. Korean apartments and hotels don’t have a fourth floor. The elevator will say 1-2-3-F-5 or 1-2-3-5. The number 4 symbolizes death in Korea. When you purchase a set of dishes in a Korean store, there are always five table settings – never four. Teachers may use a red pen to check their students' papers, but never to write personal comments or the child’s name. Writing a name in red is a death sentence. Do not touch your eyes after touching a butterfly or moth, or you will go blind. If you die in the water, you will be a ghost forever and never find your way to the afterlife. There are other superstitions, but these are some of the most-widely practiced. Is that a magpie I hear chattering?
Adventures on Jeju
Jeju spent many years as Land Without Tea Throughout the Orient, Cha (or tea) has been the beverage of choice as long as anyone can remember. Wars (and not just the American Revolution with its famous Boston Tea Party) have been either started or fought over the green leaves that are brewed in a variety of ways steeped in history and tradition. Buddhist monks and Chinese emperors are credited with the popularity of tea and its migration as a beverage of choice throughout Asia. The explorer Marco Polo is credited with introducing tea to the European culture, where it eventually reached the British Isles. But tea growing on Jeju Island is fairly recent as far a tea growing regions are concerned. With its abundance of volcanic rocks and soil, the tea grown on the island has a distinctive taste and flavor. Although there is wild tea found in some areas surrounding Halla Mountain, the vast majority of Jeju’s tea is grown in the southwest area of the island by the O'Sulloc Co., located just west of Donggwang-ri around route 1116 or just off route 95 if you're coming from Jeju-si. You can't miss the signs. In addition to acres and acres of green tea, O’Sulloc features a Green Tea Museum and store featuring tea, tea sets, tea candy and many paintings depicting the growth of tea and its place in Korean culture. While you’re there, try the Green Tea Ice Cream. It’s delicious! US Airline Alliance on the second floor of the Soldier Support Center (One Stop) offers frequent excursions to Jeju, located off Korea’s south coast. Called the ‘Hawaii of Korea,’ Jeju has many unqiue attractions. Call Airline Alliance at 753-7725 for more information.

Beautiful Busan
World’s only UN Cemetery in Busan Some 2,300 soldiers representing countries who were with the South Koreans during the Korean War have been laid to rest in the world’s only United Nations Cemetery found in the port city of Busan. Established in 1951, the UN Cemetery includes four Unknown Soldiers and separate areas for war dead from Australia, Canada, Turkey, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa and, of course, the United States and South Korea. There are also individual markers or graves for soldiers from Belgium, Colombia, Ethiopia, Greece, Luxembourg, the Philippines, Japan, Denmark, Italy, India, Sweden and Thailand, all the countries that came to South Korea’s aid with combat troops, medical personnel or services during the war. The cemetery is located a 15-minute walk from Busan Subway Line 2’ Daeyeon Station and is open from 0900-1800 daily. Admission is free. It’s a 10,000 won taxi ride from the Busan Train Station and is well known by Busan taxi drivers. Nearby attractions include the Busan Cultural Hall, the Busan Municipal Museum and the Karam Culture & Art Center as well as the Tongmyeong Buddhist Temple.

Youth Sports Sails set for New World Adventures By Hea Eun ‘Holly’ Kwon Youth Sports Intern
A month has already passed since my Camp Humphreys Internship started. Many things have happened to me in that month. I used to feel awkward around foreigners and was afraid to take a bus. But now I feel close to the young Americans I am getting the chance to work with and I can take a bus without fear. I feel like an explorer who has gone to sea with all sails set to reach a new land. I am a junior at Namseoul University in Cheonan, majoring in Sports Management. For my six-month Internship, I am working with Youth Sports, discovering that many of the things I saw in my text books really do happen. I am busy learning new skills every day.Right now, I am working with the coaches, parents and children as we get ready for the Soccer season. I am learning how many different tasks there are to make the season a success. Things I never thought of, like sizing for uniforms. Before I started this internship, I set two goals: improve my English and to not be afraid of new experiences. Most of all, improving my English skill is an overriding concern. I think this program is a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity, I do not want to let it pass me by. There has been one thing that has been a thorn in my side; the phone! I am really afraid to pick up the phone. I have tried several times, others cannot understand my speaking. So I have a small goal. I will pick up the phone and communicate perfectly by the time my internship is finished. Actually, I am shy and I always hesitate to approach strange things. From now on, I should get over it. New people, new culture, new tasks... I will become a lot more assertive, and will enjoy!! I am already in the race. I have more days left here than the days I have been here, so I look forward to everything. As for now, I am head over heels in love with my work.

Needed: Flag Football refs, Youth coaches Even though the intramural flag football season is under way, additional experienced officials are still needed. Call Kim, Chi-Hyon at 753-8811 if interested in officiating. Also, even though the Youth Basketball Season is still several months away, the recruitment drive for youth coaches is under way. The Youth Soccer season is experiencing a lack of coaches, and Youth Sports Director Brad Ficek is hoping to get a jump on the basketball season by starting the recruitment process now. Call 753-5602.

Army Community Service
Humphreys AFAP Oct 21-22 Soldiers, Family members, Civilian Employees and Youth will gather at the Super Gym Oct 21-22 for the annual Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) Seminar. For two days, participants will hammer out a wide-range of suggestions, problems and solutions that have been submitted by members of the Area III Community. Groups will then outbrief Garrison Commander Col Joe Moore with the problems and suggestions they worked out in their individual committee meetings. Traditionally, that outbrief takes the form of short skits that are often entertaining while, at the same time, informative. AFAP is an Army-wide program designed to identify programs and actions needed to improve the Quality of Life for the entire Army Family. Issues are identified at AFAP Seminars throughout the Army. Some issues are decided at the local level while others are sent all the way to Department of the Army for action. Things like increased health and insurance benefits, changes in housing standards and improvements in health care have been the direct result of AFAP initiatives. Last year, one of the local issues identified was the need for a pediatric dentist – something Humphreys now has on board. Youth Services is an important part of AFAP, and local youngsters will present their findings, too. Past issues identified by the youth that have been changed as a direct result of AFAP range from school bus stop locations to the creation of the Rec Annex and Skateboard Park to provide additional recreational services to the younger members of the community. Watch Garrison Notes and the weekly Flash and In the Fight for updated information.

Finding Out What’s Happening Happenings tries to keep you information about activities taking place throughout Korea but, to be honest, printing deadlines mean that we are going to miss some things like “big named” entertainment that’s not scheduled until after the magazine has been sent to the printer . Here’s a list of Web sites you can check to make sure you know What’sUp:
http://ticket.interpark.com/Global/Index.asp?Kind=01011 Big-name entertainers such as Stevie Wonder, the Pussycat Dolls and, before his death, Michael Jackson include Seoul on their world tours, and when they’re headed here, Interpark is the place that sells the tickets. http://www.theyeogiyo.com/index.php Concerts, theatre, movies … the Yeogiyo has it all in an easy to maneuver format. Here and Interpark are the two best places to check for big name entertainment. http://www.lifeinkorea.com Pick a month, pick a day and find out everything that’s happening in Korea on that day. Once you pick your day, you’ll also get links to each of the scheduled activities. A great trip planner. discoveringkorea.com Suggested tours, new attractions and news stories with photos of current festivals. http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/festival/eng/korea_festival.html?festival=0 A month-by-month compass that highlights everything from major to minor festivals on the entire peninsula. One of the most useful features is the Korean map that shows you where activities are located. http://www.adventurekorea.com/travelinfo/activities_list.asp?id=activities&category=4 Cultural, camping, hiking, festivals, lots of great ideas to fill up your weekends. http://korailtravel.com/ Korea has a great train system and offers some exciting options for 1 to 3-day tours. http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/index.kto Another great source for festivals and directions. http://www.sparklingkorea.org Excellent source for hotels – from cheap to deluxe http://www.seoulselection.com/index.php/home Lots of news about activities in Seoul, including dining and nightlife, also plenty of news about other Korean festivals. http://korea.net/index.do Korea’s official multi-language web site. http://www.visitseoul.net/en/index.do?_method=main As the name indicates, a great source of information if you’re planning a trip to Seoul.
Do You Have Other Favorite Sites? Share them with Happenings readers. Send your sites to FMWR Marketing and we’ll publish them in future editions. Most of the above sites include multiple links and are updated on an almost daily basis. Use them to enjoy Korea.

Happenings
Is most effective way to reach the USAG-Humphreys Market! Two mass-circulated surveys, one conducted by Family & MWR and the other by USAG-Humphreys show that the top methods people get their news about what’s happening in the Community is through direct E-Mail Notes from the Garrison, In The Fight, etc) and the FMWR monthly Happenings magazine. E-Mail and Happenings were the 1st & 2nd choices in the Garrison Survey. In the FMWR Survey, Happenings was No. 1 followed by E-Mail at No. 2. Direct E-Mail and Happenings were the only two of 15 different choices to draw more than a 50 percent response from survey participants.
What does it mean? If you’re a business trying to reach the Humphreys Market, Happenings is where you need to spend your advertising dollar. Please contact advertising manager Miss Chong, So-Kyong at 0505-754-6545 or 031-619-6545 for more information about rates and deadlines.
