Goodbye to another star MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief
I’m beginning to think I must be a lousy boss. Family & MWR Marketing has lost another star performer with the departure of Kyra Rodriguez. It’s not really my fault. I warned Kyra about the Curse of the Chair, but she felt she was immune. Little did she know. We have a chair in Marketing which has been barred by the World Population Control Association. It started with Candace Godfrey, who sat in the chair and promptly got in a Family way with her first child. Candace was followed by Gina Brown who sat in the chair only to discover an expanded waistline. And then came Kyra. She was warned, but with three kids already, she said she was “done with that.” She didn’t count on the Power of the Chair. Kyra and her husband, Joel, departed Korea for Fort Bragg in late October as doctors decided she needed to be in the States for the Christmas-time delivery of child No. 4. Family member Jeff Hubbard has inherited The Chair. We figure if it works its magic on him, we’ll make a lot of money selling his story before we ship him off to Bend, Oregon (that’s where the infamous pregnant man lives. Check it out on the web). On a more serious note, it also means Marketing is looking for another spouse who wants to make some money for the holidays. Ideally, we want someone with experience in graphics design with a working knowledge of In Design and other advanced programs. Check with CPOC for information. And, if you’re interested, we’ll take the chair away from Jeff and let you use it.

Is most effective way to reach the USAG-Humphreys Market! Two mass-circulated surveys, one conducted by Family & MWR and the other by USAG-Humphreys show that the top methods people get their news about what’s happening in the Community is through direct E-Mail Notes from the Garrison, In The Fight, etc) and the FMWR monthly Happenings magazine. E-Mail and Happenings were the 1st & 2nd choices in the Garrison Survey. In the FMWR Survey, Happenings was No. 1 followed by E-Mail at No. 2. Direct E-Mail and Happenings were the only two of 15 different choices to draw more than a 50 percent response from survey participants.
What does it mean? If you’re a business trying to reach the Humphreys Market, Happenings is where you need to spend your advertising dollar. Please contact advertising manager Miss Chong, So-Kyong at 0505-754-6545 or 031-619-6545 for more information about rates and deadlines.

Mother Nature painting Korea The combination of mountains, trees and changing seasons makes a big difference in the Korea landscape this time of year, as Mother Nature gets out her paintbrush and gets busy. A special thanks to Osan contractor David Hasenick who provided the adjacent map of Korea’s Best Autumn Colors and a “best guess” as to when the peak season will be arriving at each location. As you can see, we are already in peak season. Check www.pbase.com/dbh/galleries Of course, as the picture of Naejansan above shows, the “Peak Dates” depend on the weather, and wind or rain can clear a lot of trees in a very short period. The closest featured location is Gyeryongsan, which is located about an hour south near Daejon. Naejansan and Soraksan vie for the area with the “best colors,” and both draw hundreds of tour buses each week while the colors last. But you don’t have to go that far for great colors. As any grunt can tell you, there are “lots of mountains and trees” in Korea, and you’ll see the colors everywhere you look. Even Beacon Hill on-post will be ablaze in Fall colors. Outdoor Rec has some specials activities planned to help kids enjoy the season. Call 753-3013/3255 for details.

Korea’s Prettiest Women? Koreans say Go to Daegu! By Sue He-So Family & MWR Marketing Intern
It’s a matter of regional pride. Which area has the most beautiful women? Seoul has the “most sophisticated,” while Busan brags of the “best beach girls.” But when it comes to the “most beautiful,” it is generally accepted that Korea’s most beautiful women can be found in Daegu. Being from Daegu, myself, I have to agree. But Daegu has much more than just beautiful women. Since I know all the nooks and crannies of Daegu, let me introduce you to my hometown and some of the things you might want to see and do. The most popular place in Daegu – especially for college-age people -is Dongsung-ro – the downtown area. If young people want to eat, meet, go shopping or have a good time, they almost always go to Dongsung-ro. One place you need to visit is Mies Container. This is a very popular restaurant, featuring salad, spaghetti and bacon-potato pizza, The Mies Container design is unique, so there are always people waiting for to eat. If you’re looking for a western-style watering hole, Thursday Party is right next door. You will find many young Korean people here who want to make friends, enjoy great conversation, games and, of course, see some of Daegu’s many beautiful women. But don’t get the wrong idea: people are here to socialize and meet others and share ideas in a relaxing atmosphere. If you want a more mellow atmosphere, check out AU. AU has a sensual interior design, so it’s’ chic’ and great place to start or end the evening. There is a lovely bar to have a long conversation, and drinks are very well made. Maybe you can relax here. It is my favorite place in Dongsung-ro. There are other things to see and enjoy in the Daegu area, and I will be writing about those in future Happenings. Meanwhile, though, visit the Dongsung-ro area for a very enjoyable time and the chance to meet some new friends.

In the Neighborhood
Home of a Hero Just down the road in Asan is the sprawling estate of Korea’s Yi Family – the birthplace of one of world’s most innovative and far-thinking warriors in Naval history. When Americans study the history of ironclad Naval ships, they most-often think of the Civil War and the battle between the Merrimac and the Monitor. But some 300 years before that battle – and 200 years before the U.S. even came into being – Admiral Yi, Sun-Sin brought metal to the world of wooden ships. Yi’s concept was a copper roof for his ships – a metal shield that was impermeable to arrows and fireballs. With his warriors firing from beneath their copper sheath, Yi defeated the superior Japanese fleet and gained his spot in history with the invention of the Turtle Ship. Yi was born and raised in a small community near Onyang, and his palatial estate is preserved as a Korean National Treasure. Follow the road signs to Onyang turn left before crossing the bridge into the community. The Yi estate is about two miles down the road and open daily.

Myeongryang Sea Battle It was 413 years ago that legendary Korean Naval Hero Yi, Sun-Sin faced an impossible task – facing a force of 133 Japanese ships with a fleet of just 13 defenders. But Admiral Yi, whose boyhood home is located less than 30 minutes from USAG-Humphreys, had the home field advantage, and knew the unique swirling and whirling currents of Uldolmok located here on Korea’s southwest coast. In a swift and decisive battle, Admiral Yi’s forces trapped the Japanese in the narrow straits and used the fast flowing current to speedily destroy the entire enemy fleet. Some 300 U.S. Soldiers, Civilians and Family members from Humphreys and Yongsan got a chance to attend the 413th reenactment of the Battle of Myeongryang last month, guests of the local community through the PAO’s Good Neighbor Program. Participants were treated to two days that included festival activities, food, tours, transportation, hotel and even souvenirs of their outing. Individuals who participated can find a wide selection of photos at http://spotted.stripes.com/galleries/index.php?id=345013. And if you haven’t visited Admiral Yi’s home, see this month’s In the Neighborhood for details.

Taste of Korea Crisis in Korea: Chinese cabbage up 400 percent When it comes to the Taste of Korea, one food item is found from one end of the peninsula to the other: Kimchi. Breakfast, Lunch and Supper – three items always found on the table are rice, chopsticks and the pungent smelling fermented cabbage that is usually dark red from the chili paste that’s a key ingredient for most varieties. This is the time of year Korean women throughout the peninsula get together to make kimchi. But there’s a problem this year. Because of the high humidity and unusual weather patterns of this past summer, much of Korea’s Chinese cabbage crop – the key ingredient in Kimchi – was destroyed by the late rains. Korean television has been full of photos of rotted cabbages and people fighting for the heads of cabbage as soon as they hit the store shelves – even at an inflated price. As a result of the weather, the cost of cabbage has increased more than 400 percent over the past year – all the way to $10 a head. The Korean government has stepped in by lowering the tariff for the cost of cabbage imports from China, but many Koreans don’t trust cabbage from China because of problems from several years ago. No one is sure what the future holds … except that you can be sure that Koreans will continue to eat kimchi every meal, no matter what the price And restaurants will continue you to serve you kimchi with every meal – although the portions may be smaller, you might have to pay for seconds and you might be asked if you really want kimchi rather than automatically receiving a bowl. To really know the Taste of Korea, you have to try kimchi at least once – even if you have to pay for it.

Uniquely Korean
Rest Stops a Smorgasbord Throughout the States, “name” companies dominate the highway rest stop scene. Remember those Stuckey’s Ahead signs? Even where McDonald’s or Burger King have won the State Highway Commission bid, you still find those Stuckey Pecan Rolls. Korea’s answer to Stuckey’s is Walnut Cakes, and you’ll find them being freshly made at just about every rest stop along the expressways. But you’ll find a lot more, too ... dozens of different food choices, fancy coffees, endless vending machines, convenience stores and even little kid’s rides. Some rest stops even have batting cages, live music and unique trailers offering everything from clothing to fishing poles. Rest Stops are located about every 30 kilometers (18-20 miles) on most main expressways, and offer clean restrooms, gasoline, LPG and emergency vehicle repairs as well. Just about every rest stop is different, but remember to bring Korean won. None of them are equipped to handle dollars. There always seem to be someone, though, who understands English, and all the food workers understand pointing In addition to tasting some great new Korean food, you’ll find Korean Rest Stops a new cultural experience … and maybe even fun.

Youth Sports Volunteer Coaches make it happen By Hea Eun ‘Holly’ Kwon Youth Sports Intern
As the Fall turns to Winter, Youth Sports is transitioning from soccer season to basketball and cheerleading. The 2010 soccer season has 23 teams with children ranging in age from 4 to 15, and we are having a perfect season! Behind this success, we have 27 volunteer coaches. Thanks to them, our soccer season can proceed. Volunteer coaches are very important for a successful Youth Sports season. Youth Sports is currently seeking volunteers interested in becoming volunteer coaches for the youth basketball and cheerleading seasons. Some people think volunteer coaches have to have a remarkable skill, but most of our active coaches are not professionals. Others may think volunteer coaches are just parents of players, but anyone can become a coach. As aforementioned, there is no formal qualification to become a Youth Sports Coach. You must pass a background check and fill out an application. Knowledge of the sport is not essential, but you should have a good attitude, patience, and be able to motivate the children and youth. Finally, you should make time for a minimum of 2 hours a week. There are many more rewards from coaching. It is fun and rewarding to see the children promote good health and sportsmanship. Becoming a coach can be a very meaningful and profound experience. When asked about his volunteer ship with Youth Sports, Adolfo Mejia, who has coached Youth Sports for 6 years said, “I think the most rewarding thing anyone can get from coaching or educating is the satisfaction knowing that you made a difference in a child's life in a positive way.” Moreover, it is also positive influence on you. If you become a coach, there will be no regrets. Persons interested in coaching may visit the P.C. Office at the Child Development Center (BLDG #693) or visit the Youth Sports Office in the Rec Annex (BLDG #111) to fill out the proper paper work. Youth Sports will be scheduling a coaching clinic later this month so you can learn more about the position.

ACS Courses Earn Promotion Points Did you know that Army Community Service offers promotion points to E6 and below? Soldiers can now earn promotion points by completing selected Army Community Service courses. A total of four promotion points can be awarded for accumulating 40 hours of course instruction in the New Parent Support Program, financial readiness training, Operation R.E.A.D.Y. training classes and Army Family Team Building. The New Parent Support Program educates new parents about child health and development and appropriate child rearing practices. Through the Family Advocacy Program, individuals can enhance their communication and listening skills and stress management techniques. Financial Readiness training classes promote financial literacy and wellness and focus on how to get control of a budget, credit management, and decreasing debt for stress-free living. Operation R.E.A.D.Y. gives Soldiers and Family members information about deployment and separation and provides an overview of all phases of deployment, sustainment, post-deployment, homecoming, and reunion. Army Family Team Building training is designed to offer personal readiness and leadership training skills to maximize one’s successful transition to the military environment. For more information, call the ACS Director, 753-3103
Are you eligible for extra money? Some Soldiers may be eligible for extra money through the Floyd D. Spence National Defense Authorization Act designed to get Soldiersoff food stamps by providing them a monetary allowance that raises them above the gross income threshold set by the Department of Agriculture. Soldiers who believe they are eligible may go to the DOD website https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/fssa/ For additional information, please contact the ACS Financial Readiness Program Manager, 753-8403.

Spend the holidays on Korea’s version of Hawaii US Airline Alliance, Eastar Group, the Lotte Hotel and the Shilla Hotel has put together a series of special packages for the November American holidays. The Lotte and Shilla are considered two of Jeju Islands best hotels and are filled with honeymooners from Korea and Japan most of the year. But they are both still offering specials that include round-trip airfare and free breakfasts at Jeju’s finest facilities. The Lotte is offering 3-day and 4-day specials for both Veterans Day and Thanksgiving weekends. The 3-day packages (Nov 11-13 and Nov 25-27) are priced at $399 for adults and $219 for children, while the 4-day price is $499 for adults and $229 for children. The price includes breakfast each day, two free beer coupons per room each day and free admission to the fitness club. Free upgrades to oceanview rooms in the annex are given on a space-availble basis. The Shilla specials are only on the Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 25-27 and Nov 25-28). They are priced the same as Lotte and include breakfast, complimentary admission to the Finland Jacuzzi and Play Station Zone and two complimentary World Winery Tour entrance coupons. The special offers are available through U.S. Airline Alliance located on the second floor of One Stop (look for the CTO – Commercial Travel Office). Finding Out What’s Happening Happenings tries to keep you informed about activities taking place throughout Korea but, to be honest, printing deadlines mean that we are going to miss some things like “big named” entertainment that’s not scheduled until after the magazine has been sent to the printer. Here’s a list of Web sites you can check to make sure you know What’sUp:
http://ticket.interpark.com/Global/Index.asp?Kind=01011 -- Big-name entertainers such as Stevie Wonder, the Pussycat Dolls and, before his death, Michael Jackson include Seoul on their world tours, and when they’re headed here, Interpark is the place that sells the tickets. http://www.theyeogiyo.com/index.php – Concerts, theatre, movies … the Yeogiyo has it all in an easy to maneuver format. Here and Interpark are the two best places to check for big name entertainment. http://www.lifeinkorea.com – Pick a month, pick a day and find out everything that’s happening in Korea on that day. Once you pick your day, you’ll also get links to each of the scheduled activities. A great trip planner. discoveringkorea.com – Suggested tours, new attractions and news stories with photos of current festivals. http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/festival/eng/korea_festival.html?festival=0 -- A month-by-month compass that highlights everything from major to minor festivals on the entire peninsula. One of the most useful features is the Korean map that shows you where activities are located. http://www.adventurekorea.com/travelinfo/activities_list.asp?id=activities&category=4 -Cultural, camping, hiking, festivals .. lots of great ideas to fill up your weekends. http://korailtravel.com/ – Korea has a great train system and offers some exciting options for 1 to 3-day tours. http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/index.kto -- Another great source for festivals and directions. http://www.sparklingkorea.org – Excellent source for hotels – from cheap to deluxe http://www.seoulselection.com/index.php/home -- Lots of news about activities in Seoul, including dining and nightlife. But also plenty of news about other Korea festivals. http://korea.net/index.do -- Korea’s official multi-language web site. http://www.visitseoul.net/en/index.do?_method=main – As the name indicates, a great source of information if you’re planning a trip to Seoul.

Getting to Seoul not difficult By Arisae Ryu Public Affairs Intern It’s always a challenge to get around when you are new in town -- especially in a foreign country like Korea where you don’t understand the language or the signs. We are all aware there’s lots going on in Seoul. But how do we get there? Luckily, Seoul is only an hour and a half away and actually, is not so horrifying to travel by yourself once you know how to use the public transportation. So here are some tips for you that will make your journey hassle-free. There are three ways to get to Seoul -- train, subway and bus. We’ll talk about the buss next month (since it has so many more options), you’re here’s the low-down on the train and subway. They both start with the No. 20 bus outside the walk-thru gate and involve getting off at Pyongtaek Station.Choose your destination and find the fastest/easiest way to get there. Train -- The fastest way for Yongsan and Itaewon is by rail. Get your ticket from the ticket office or the automatic ticket device that has English service. From Yongsan station (Where the Electronics market is), you can go to Itaewon by subway or taxi. The journey takes about an hour and the prices are 4200-4900KRW depending on destination and train. Subway -- Get your ticket from the automatic ticket device or use a T-Money card (Pre-paid card for public transportation). Make sure you follow the subway sign -not the train sign to get on the subway. There are 9 subway lines in Seoul, so it is important to read signs carefully and figure out where the train is headed. The journey takes about 100 minutes to Yongsan (No transfer needed) and 120min to Itaewon (Brown Line). The prices start from 1,000KRW and get added depending on your destination. Subway lines are color-coded, and the easiest way to get around is to find your destination and trace it back to Pyongtaek. You’ll see where the colors cross, which means that’s where you’ll transfer. And don’t worry – all the signs and announcements are in English and Korean. Does this still sound like a foreign language to you? Don’t be afraid! ACS is there to help through the Wonder Wheels program. Be at the BBQ Pavilion by the Walk-Thru Gate at 0900 any Saturday and start your adventure. ACS will be scheduling different tours each weekend, providing you the opportunity to learn the secrets of public transportation while, at the same time, visiting new sights. Bring Won for tickets, lunch and souvenirs. Call 753-8401/8804 for more details.
