December 2010
We have lots in store for you MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief
Family & MWR is busy all year round, but this is the season when things really get hectic. We aren’t like Stateside posts where the Holiday Exodus leads to closing or reducing the hours of FMWR facilities and programs. In fact, it’s just the opposite here, with a full schedule of activities planned especially for you and, if you’re accompanied, your Family. Sports will include basketball, flag football, Powderpuff football, bowling and even the chance for a Soldier to win a round-trip airline ticket home on New Year’s Day. We’re going to have free bowling (and free rental shoes) for everyone Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The United Club has basically rented the Strike Zone to make that happen. And there will be a free Christmas Eve Party for Soldiers and a New Year’s Party New Year’s Eve (sorry – there’s a small cost for that one). Entertainment will include the Humphreys American School chorus, the 2nd Infantry Division Band and that old standby, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. We’ve signed an exclusive contract with Santa to visit us at the beginning of the month and again in the middle of the month to pose for Family pictures (in time to use them on your holiday cards). We also have some great meals on tap for both Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and the chance to start working off some of those extra pounds with a midnight 5K on New Year’s Eve and the kick off of the annual 3-month Biggest Loser’s Contest on New Year’s Day. Most of the details are in this magazine, but watch the Daily Garrison Notes for updates and new activities. And a Happy & Safe Holidays to All from your friends at Family & MWR! We’ll be the ones working over Christmas and New Year’s.

Taste of Korea Some people call it the Porcupine Nut because of the sharp needles on its outer skin. And when you talk about chestnuts, many Americans only know them from the Christmas song below made famous by Nate King Cole or as part of the stuffing in a gourmet turkey. For many Koreans, however, this is the time of year to swarm to the mountains (or Beacon Hill) and harvest the legendary nuts. Koreans use chestnuts in many of their traditional recipes, although in many cases, the nut is boiled and chopped rather than roasted over an open fire. Some of the more popular dishes include Korean Stir Fly, Chestnut and Parsnip Soup, Pumpkin Bread Soup or Pudding, Bam Baap (Korean Chestnut Rice), Korean Chestnut The Christmas Song Bread (made with rice flour), Chestnut Rice Cakes, Korean Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Chestnut Balls (You-Raan) and Jack Frost nipping on your nose, Chestnut Dumplings (Mondu). Discover Korea Dec 11-Jan 9 – Seoul Festival of Lights, Gwanghwamum Gate area. Festival activities change nightly but include video concerts by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, artistic displays, videos and gigantic light shows. Because of crowds, it is recommended that you use the subway and get off at the Gwanghwanun Station (Subway Line 5). Check the homepage at hiseoulfest.org for updates. Dec 17-19 – Yeongdong Dried Persimmon Festival. Yeongdong is called Korea’s Holy Land of Fruit and persimmons are one of its best. Experience persimmon jam making or a foot bath of persimmon leaves and peels. (8233-1330 for English information). Dec 19-26 – Guryongpo Specialty Festival, Pohang Area. This area is famous for its dried mackerel but has added snow crabs and squid to its specialties. Traditional music performances amd lots of free sampling. (8233-1330 for information) Dec 23-Feb 6 – Pyeongchang Trout Festival, Gangwon-do (82-33-1330 for information). Enjoy both ice and lure fishing, snow and ice programs, folk games, top-spinning, sledding, ATVs, snow rafting and sleigh trains. Nearby restaurants will prepare your catch for immediate consumption. Dec 31-Jan 3 – Seongsan Sunrise Festival, Jeju Island. Although there are dozens of New Year’s Sunrise Festivals in Korea, the one at Sunrise Peak in Jeju is the most famous. As the clock ticks its way towards midnight on December 31, people start the countdown around the performance stage, which is set up at Seongsan Sunrise Peak. In celebration of the New Year, there is a torchlight show, a campfire and fireworks. A traditional shamanic ritual called gut is performed along with other fascinating performances. Also, famous vocalists and entertainers perform during an outdoor concert. As January 1 arrives, fishermenthroughout the island turn on their boat lights and sound their whistles in unison to celebrate the New Year. Also, as the sun rises, a golden tape is cut, while visitors are entertained with a theatrical play, band and jazz performances. Other events include a mounted police parade, a pungmul performance, a mandarin orange eating contest, and a food market cyber.jeju.go.kr

Bus tour easy way to Discover Seoul (First in a series) Seoul is just an hour, two hours, three hours away by car – depending on the time and the traffic. If you’re smart, you’re going to take the subway or the buss to Korea’s capitol city. And once you get there, the Seoul City Bus Tour is the easiest and least expensive way to get around. There are several different tour packages offered, but this month we look at the basic City and Night tours – the perfect way to discover Seoul. For the City Tour, you can even catch the Yongsan shuttle from the USO and join the tour at the Korea War Memorial outside Yongsan. Each seat on the tour includes headphones with automatic recordings available in 4 languages including English plus LCD monitors and informational recordings. There is also a multilingual staff for interpretation services. You will also receive guide books and maps as well as discount and free admission tickets for some attractions. Buses run every 30 minutes. City Course Passengers may get on or off at any stop and take the next bus to move on. All Night Course buses leave from the Donghwa Duty Free Shop in Gwanghwamun and there are no stops. Hours of Operation – City Course 0900-1900; Night Course 2000-2130. No Monday trips (unless it is a Korean holiday) Cost – City Course (Adults 10,000W, Student 8,000W), Night Course (Adults 6,000W, Student 3,000W). Children 5 & under Free if accompanied by a paying adult. Student includes students through high school. Tickets can be purchased from the City Tour Bus Guide on the bus or at the Koreana, Crown, Tower, Sofitel Ambassador, New Oriental, Savoy hotels or at the Korean War Memorial. The map to the right shows you the many different locations the City Tour runs. When you find something you want to examine more, just get off, visit and jump on the next City Tour bus that comes along.

In the Neighborhood Hot Springs City 30 minutes away Just some 30 minutes southeast of Humphreys is Korea’s most famous Hot Spring City – a place where Korean kings came to bathe in the 135 degree (F) (57C) waters and soak their weary bones. Onyang Hot Springs is the oldest hot spring in Korea, founded about 1,300 years old and operating as a hot spring for about 600 years. During the Joseon Period, it is recorded that King Sejong (reign 1418~1450) and many other kings came here to rest or treat their illnesses. Onyang Hot Springs is considered hot even among hot springs, with the water having a high concentration of radium and alkaline. It is reputed to be effective in treating neuralgia, arthritis, skin problems, liver disease, high blood pressure and various geriatric diseases. The combination of the quality of water and famous accommodations nearby has made this hot spring a hot item for many tourists. As there are 120 hotels and motels in this area, the whole city is sometimes known as a Hot Springs City. To reach Onyang, turn right after exiting the CPX Gate, go the south side of Dunpo and take the road toward Asan. If you stay straight on the road, you’ll come into Onyang City. Public spas featuring hot springs water are clearly marked and most of the hotels also identify their hot spring amenities. You don’t have to be hotel guest to use the spa. (See Understanding Korea on the next page for Spa etiquette).

Korean Spa etiquette uncovered Q & A answering the rumors: 1-Many of the activities at a Korean Spa or Hot Springs are performed minus clothing. You walk around natural and go from spot to spot with nothing covering you – not even a towel. TRUE 2-Aattractions designed for both men and women require clothing. It is not optional. TRUE 3-Korean spas offer many different massages and body rubs, one of which combines grains of sea salt and scouring pads like the ones you use on the bottom of pots and pans. TRUE 4-You shower and shampoo before you get into a hot spring or spa pool. And this is not a quick wash-off. It’s a complete shower. In other words, you get clean before you step into the bath. TRUE 5-Just as cities in the United States used to have their public bathhouses, spas in Korean served the same purpose for many years. In fact, many small Korean homes and apartments still only have hand showers, and whole Families will use the local spa for their weekly bath. TRUE Local spas can also serve as social clubs, and many are open 24-hours a day. TRUE Korean spas are a treat that every American should experience at least once in their life. Do not mistake a Korean spa for the more infamous massage parlors. You’ll be the one who gets embarrassed. VERY TRUE And try the salt scrub (usually not offered for men). It will leave you feeling like a new person. One visit will run somewhere around $20 – sometime more, sometimes less – depending on extras like a body scrub. And if you decide you like the experience, frequent user passes carry heavy discounts. TRUE

Nothing ‘cheesie’ about Cheese Factory schools Korea may never challenge Switzerland or even Wisconsin for its cheese production, but the growth of Korean pizza joints has made Korean dairy farmers aware that milk and milk by-products have a much larger use than as a drink or in cosmetics. Cheese, and as far as that goes milk, are items that didn’t used to be part of the normal Korean diet – even for children where boiled barley water was the beverage of choice at meal time. But today – spurred through the influence of television and the internet as well as the growth of fast-food restaurants – Korean children drink milk and liquid yogurt and Korean teens consume large quantities of cheese on their pizzas, spaghetti, fried cheesesticks and cheeseburgers. The Korean government estimates that milk and milk product consumption has multiplied by 150 times over the past 10 years. The changing diet patterns and modernization of Korean dairy farms have led to a more visible dairy industry, and the farmers themselves are exploiting the growth with new ‘tourist attractions’ such as Cheese Schools. The Cheese Schools are very popular with Korean educators who are taking their pre-school and elementary school students on field trips. And they are becoming a popular destination for adults, too. Mix the combination of the opportunity to mash gooey cheese curds with your hands, a petting zoo of small farm animals and flipping pizza dough together and you have a day of fun for young and old alike. Korean dairy farms are much smaller than you find in Wisconsin, but the smell is the same and so is the irresistible opportunity to kiss a small cow. Watch for Cheese School tour opportunities, and when you get the chance take advantage of it. It’s a lot of fun.

ACS adding new classes The name Wonder Wheels is being changed to the longer and more descriptive “Learning About Korea and Public Transportation,” giving participants the opportunity to Discover More of Korea while learning the ins and outs of Korean Public Transportation. In addition, Army Community Service is working with Korea Contracting Command to greatly expand its English as a Second Language, Korean Language and both U.S. and Korean Cultural Programs. ACS Director Suzanne James is hopeful everything will be in place this month, but she’s not sure of the starting dates. “We are always looking for ways to better serve the community," said ACS Director Suzanne James, “and we are constantly asking Soldiers and Family members alike what we can do to better meet their needs. We think the new lineup will achieve that goal.” Wonder Wheels participants meet at the BBQ Pavilion next to the walk-thru gate and will still start their adventure on the No. 20 bus to Pyeongtaek. subway station where they traveled to Seoul for shopping. Under the revamped program, the destination could be Seoul, the Korean Folk Village in Yongin, Pyeongtaek Harbor or the Suwon Fortress. Participants pay their own way and get hands-on training in using the bus, subway and trains. “Wonder Wheels has been a very successful program, and many people have learned that getting around Korea is not as difficult as they thought,” James said. “Past trips have been limited to Seoul, but there is a lot more than Seoul to discover during your tour in Korea. And just about everything can be reached through public transportation.” Watch the Daily Garrison Notes for updates or call 753-8804/8318.

Need babysitter for the holidays? Are you going to need a babysitter for Christmas shopping or New Year’s Eve? Youth Services maintains a list of certified and reliable babysitters in the USAG-Humphreys community. In order to protect our children, individuals needing a babysitter must visit Bldg. 570 with a photo ID in order to obtain a current list. All listed babysitters have completed the Red Cross babysitting certification course. To obtain more information, please call 753-3413
The Army is spending big bucks to provide free homework assistance for Army youngsters throughout the world through tutor.com. For some reason, however, less than 20 USAG-Humphreys children are signed up for the free service which would cost hundreds of dollars per use if it wasn’t for the Army contract. Elementary, high school and even college students can get free professional assistance with research papers, book reports, term papers, test preparations and more by just registering. Go to tutor.com and follow the military link to register. It only takes minutes, and once you’re registered you can get immediate assistance with the click of a mouse.
HELP WANTED Youth Services is seeking qualified Piano, Ballet, Math, Art and Foreign Language instructors for the SKIES Unlimited program. Interested individuals should call 753-8274/3413 for more details.
Taekwondo, Baton Twirling, Dance classes Youngsters can learn Korea’s martial art, baton twirling and even Creative Dance through the SKIES Unlimited program. Taekwondo is offered Monday, Wednesday & Friday and is priced at $60 per month, while Baton Twirling is offered Tuesdays at costs $25 per month. Christmas different in Korea Korea has its own Christmas traditions See Marketing Intern Sue He-So’s story about her recollections of Christmas during her youth Because Christianity and Western culture are both fairly new in Korea, most of the Christmas celebrations are very similar to those found in Europe and the United States. Although Christians comprise only around 25% of its population, South Korea recognizes Christmas as a public holiday, and much of the country – Christian and Buddhist alike, participate in some holiday traditions such as: Exchanging Christmas cards: Korean Christmas cards are generally less expensive than cards in the United States, and they often have peaceful outdoor scenes, landscapes or other artwork on them. Christian churches -- On Christmas Eve, the youth of the churches have a traditional Christmas pageant. Then from about midnight until 0500 Christmas morning, they break into small groups and go caroling with an appointed church member. After catching an hour or two of sleep, the sleepy teen and sponsor find himself in church at 1100 for the traditional Christmas worship service, followed by baptisms and the reception of new members into the church. Exchanging gifts: Young children eagerly await the arrival of Santa Haraboji, or Santa Grandfather, on Christmas Eve. Friends and family members may also exchange gifts for Christmas – but only a single gift. Christmas dinner: A formal dinner is a popular way to celebrate the holiday with family members, though the menu usually includes popular Korean dishes such as sweet potato noodles, rice cake soup, bulgogi and, of course, Kimchi. Some Christmas activities to enjoy: Seoulland - Snow, ice and fairy tales. It also features Santa Claus. Lotte World - Parades and carols Everland – More than 50 Christmas trees, a village designed to represent a European Christmas and Safari World decorated with a blanket of snow.

These are some of the questions your Family & MWR hopes to have answered in our second annual Lunar Customer Service Survey being conducted on-line from Dec 1-Jan 31. Just type in the survey link below and the 10-question survey will appear on your computer window. Take a few minutes to answer the questions and have your voice heard. Thank You.

Three individuals who complete the survey will receive a pair of 2-foot plush rabbits in honor of the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit, which arrives Feb. 3, 2011. Your survey response is 100 percent confidential, and the only way we know who completed the survey is by you letting us know. Send your E-Mail to area3mwrmarketing@korea,army.mil.
