VOLUME 13, NUMBER 2

FEBRUARY 2011

Welcome to the Year 4708 MIKE MOONEY Family & MWR Marketing Chief

One of the great things about living in a foreign country is the opportunity to experience a new culture. And this month, all of us living and working in Korea get the opportunity to celebrate one of Asia’s greatest cultural experiences – the Lunar New Year. Yes, I know, we all celebrated New Year last month. But that New Year was based on the infant Gregorian Calendar. Did you know that much of the world has only celebrated Jan. 1 as New Year’s Day for less than 500 years? Before that, Europe and the Americans celebrated New Year’s Day on March 1 or 15. In the Orient, however, the date of the New Year has always been paired with the moon – specifically the day of the second new moon after the day on which the winter solstice occurs. That means Thursday, Feb. 3 this year. Commander

And while we celebrate this year as 2011, the Koreans are celebrating the start of the year 4708 on the Chinese Calendar. I’m sure everyone has already heard the nightmare stories of Korean highway traffic over the Lunar holidays. They’re true. Travel between Pyongtaek and Seoul, Daegu or just about anywhere else on the peninsula will be almost impossible – even in the bus lane. Bus and train tickets were sold out months ago, and millions of Koreans will be traveling to their home towns to reunite with their Families. The Lunar Holidays are celebrated with food, games, dance and traditions. We have included special pages in this month’s Happenings to give you a better understanding of what all the fuss is about. Uniquely Korean Like Americans, Koreans will celebrate Valentine’s Day Feb 14. Unlike Americans, however, men will not be buying flowers, candy or jewelry for the women in their life. Instead, under the Korean system, the girls buy gifts for the boys. Korean Valentine's Day is similar to ours in theme, but limited in scope with only Korean girls giving chocolates to Korean boys. Girls are returning the favor in memory of a traditional folk character - a poor girl who was in love with a wealthy boy. The boy loved the poor girl, but was forced to part with her because of a parental mandate. Before he left, though, he gave her chocolates -- her favorite treat. Today, girls in Korea return the kind gesture of love by giving chocolates to the boys they like. However, while boys don't have to do anything in February, their turn comes in March. March 14th in Korea is White Day. On White Day, Korean boys give candy or chocolates to Korean girls. Waiting one month to reciprocate a gift takes the pressure off the boys because they have usually figured out exactly who likes them and gave them a gift in February. While it is not required that you give a return gift, that is usually the accepted thing to do. However, guys are not limited only to the people who gave them chocolate. They may give sweets to any girl they fancy. If you received chocolate or candy in either February or March, you take the following month off to plan gifts for the rest of the year. But if you weren't a recipient in February or March, then April becomes your month. April 14th in Korea is called Black Day. The girls and boys who did not receive chocolate or candy in February and March all come together for a meal of black noodles -- noodles with black bean sauce usually served in Chinese restaurants. And, if they’re lucky, they will meet someone who will give them chocolates next year – either February 14 (Valentine’s Day) or March 14 (White Day). Hopefully, they won’t be celebrating Black Day two years in a row … unless they really like Black Noodles. 19

Understanding Korea

All Koreans to celebrate birthdays this month Many Westerners get confused when it comes to the actual age of their Korean friends, and most of that confusion is tied into Lunar New Year which will be celebrated at the start of this month. Unlike Americans, Koreans are considered to be one-year old at birth. And they can celebrate a second birthday in a matter of days since all Koreans become another year older on Lunar New Year. That means a baby born this month will turn 2-years-old February 3. The Lunar (also called the Chinese New Year) is determined by the Lunar Calendar. That means it’s different every year. For example: last year, the Lunar New Year was February 14. This year it will be February 3, and next year it will fall on January 23. For legal documents such as driver’s licenses, the Koreans use the Western standard. When a Korean says they are 21 years old, their driver’s license may say they are only 19. The actual age can be even more confusing when dealing with older Koreans – especially women. Since most births occurred in the home rather than a hospital, it was up to the father to record the birth with the government. Many fathers waited until the birth of a son before recording multiple births – often not being sure of the actual birth date (or, in some cases, the year of a daughter’s birth). Interested in how old you are according to the Chinese Calendar? Go to http://www.asia-home.com/china/cncaps.php and type in your Western birth date, Click 2, Calculate the Chinese caps, and the answer will be given to you. You will probably be older than you think. Meanwhile, remember to wish your Korean friends a Happy Birthday on Lunar New Year. Happenings FEB 11.indd 20

Taste of Korea

How you eat Bungeo-ppang tells secrets The bungeo-ppang or ingeo-ppang, also known as hwanggeum Ingeo-ppang (goldfish-shaped bun), is a popular treat during the Korean winter, and is eaten by both old and young. But did you know that the way you eat bungeo-ppang tells observes about your secret personality? Made of wheat flour and glutinous rice flour filled with red bean paste, bungeo-ppang is chewier than hoppang because of the glutinous rice (sticky rice) flour. Bungeo-ppang carts can be everywhere as they fill the streets with a delicious aroma. Five bungeo-ppang usually sell for about 2,000 won. How do you eat your bungeo-ppang? Koreans believe that those who eat the head first are easy-going optimists, unconcerned with trivial things and will say whatever comes to mind. The head-eater has passion, but it can dwindle easily. Those who eat the tail first are cautious, concerned with the fine details and slow in catching onto other’s feelings. Stomach eaters are masculine, active, bright and outgoing. Fin eaters are temperamental and childish loners. If you split yours in half and then eat the tail first, you are polite, good at saving money and a rationalist. And finally, if you split yours in half and then eat the head first, you are strong willed and follow through with plans. You are also stingy and do not like to lend money – even to buy some more bungeo-ppang.

Experiene New Year’s Day

Fix your Family Tteokguk Soup While Western cultures celebrate the New Year with a glass of bubblie, Koreans celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year as a Family with Tteokguk Soup. You can enjoy a bowl, too, in the comfort of your home. It doesn’t take long, and most of the ingredients are readily available. Tteokguk is a soup made of diagonally sliced rice cakes simmered in beef broth, garnished with pressed meat, and fried egg white and yolk strips. People enjoy tteokguk made with sliced garaetteok on the first day of the year. Garaetteok rice cake that is pulled it into a long rod. It is eaten in the hopes of expanding one's property and good fortune. Ingredients -- 600g white rice cake, 300g beef (brisket·shank), 1.6kg (8 cups) water, 20g green onion, 10g garlic, 3g clear soy sauce, 1.1g (¼ tsp) minced green onion, 1.4g (¼ tsp) minced garlic, 0.1g black pepper, 6g (1 tsp) clear soy sauce, 6g (1½ tsp) salt, 60g (1 ea) egg, 1g shred red pepper Preparations 1. Clean blood off beef with a cotton cloth. Wash the seasoning cleanly. 2. Put the beef and water in the pot, heat it up for 7 min. on high heat. When it boils, lower the heat to medium, simmer it for 30 min. Add the fragrant seasoning, simmer it for another 30 min. 3. Shred the white rice cake 4cm-long, 0.2cm-thick diagonally. 4. Wash the green onion and cut it into 2cm-long lengthwise diagonally. 5. Pan-fry eggs for yellow/white garnish and cut into 2cm of diaper shape. 6. Cut the shred red pepper into 2cm-long. Finish & Serve 1. Filter the simmered broth (1.4kg) through a cotton cloth, rip up the beef along the texture (160g). 2. Pour the broth in the pot, heat it up for 5 min. on high heat. Volunteer coaches needed for T-Ball, Baseball & Softball The Spring Sports Season is just around the corner, and Youth Sports is seeking volunteers to coach Baseball, T-Ball and Girl’s Slow-Pitch Softball for the coming campaigns. “We need to recruit coaches as early as possible since the number of coaches helps determine the number of teams we can fill,” said Youth Sports Director Brad Ficek. Also, having coaches on board early will enable us to assign youngsters to teams and start practice as soon as the weather breaks.” If you’re interested in coaching a team this year, stop by the PC desk at the Child Development Center or the Youth Sports office at the Rec Annex (the old Main Post Gym across from Lodging and the Theatre). All Youth Coaches must complete a background check, making early registration even more important.

Registration open for Youth Spring Sports The registration period for T-Ball, Baseball and Girl’s Softball is Feb 128. Youth sports will offer development teams for children 3-5, baseball for youngsters 5-18 and girl’s softball for girls 10-18. Registration is also open for the Road Runners Running Club for boys and girls 5-18. Contact Youth Sports at 753-5601 for details.

Polar Bear Plunge cancelled The annual Polar Bear Plunge at Splish & Splash Water Park has been cancelled for this year because of deck construction. The bitter cold this winter had made it impossible for construction crews to complete the project in time for this year’s event. It will return next winter.

Last Chance to Tell Us How You Feel

Time is running out to take the annual Area III Family & MWR Customer Service Survey. Survey ends February 28. Your input is ESSENTIAL!!! Each year in conjunction with the Lunar New Year, Area III Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation conducts an extensive Customer Service Survey. Managers eagerly await each year’s survey results, searching for your comments and suggestions for what we can do to better serve you and yours. Based on survey results through mid-January, we are either doing a great job or no one cares about the FMWR program. Less than 50 people completed the survey in the first two months. We depend on you to tell us about our warts before they turn into moles. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. And then let us know you did so and go into the drawing for one of the pairs of stuffed Lunar Rabbits we’re giving away. Go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LunarRabbit

Also, when we havea class which is instructed by external instructors, they want to set a minimum number of participants.

Get the most out of your digital camera You may never become as good a photographer as George Smith or instructor-in-waiting Tim Hartley, but they are willing to share their experience and knowledge with you free of charge. Bring your camera and the instruction book to the CAC Aerobics Room from 1000-1600 Saturday, Feb 12, and start unlocking your camera’s magic. These are two of Tim’s digital photos. Available at all Korea-based Main Exchanges A major international hit written by a Soldier stationed in Camp Humphreys.

Determined to learn the truth about an empty lot and its burned down house, Ray, a young boy, soon finds himself facing the little girl who is said to have died in the fire years ago. Now with the answers he has regretted to discover, can he survive the torment bested upon him by the ghost he has awaken? Purchase the book at the PX or email Arthur at artmills@hotmail.com for an autographed copy! Arthur’s story of his haunted childhood combines unrelenting suspense with the poignant story of a young boy's struggle to survive in a hostile world--a tale so compelling readers will remember it long after the last page is read and the cover closed. -Shirley Kennedy, Multi-published author for Signet and Ballantine

Military Saves 2011 Humphreys Army Community Service is proud to announce that it has joined the installation Community Bank, Navy Federal Credit Union and Consumer Federation of America to observe the fifth year of the Military Saves Campaign, February 20-27. The Campaign’s slogan, “Start Small, Think Big,” talks to the long-term benefits of saving even a little each month. The week is a time to educate and motivate troops and families to save their hard-earned money for both emergencies and their financial goals as a year-long effort. It is also an opportunity to teach our military children about saving and other good financial habits. Please stop by the PX Lobby on February 22 from 1130-1400 and the Community Activity Center on February 23 from 1130-1400 to register and take the “Saver Pledge”. Point of Contact is Barbara Brown or Jimmy Smith at Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program at 753-6522. 51 55
