SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

Rafting
White Water Rafting Hantan River in Cheolwon-gun features rapids flowing down a forested Kangwon-do mountainside. The waters are clean and clear. The lush, wooded valleys offer spectacular scenery. Hantan River is a popular destination for rafting enthusiasts, drawing more than 100,000 people every summer. Things to bring: Swimsuit and appropriate footwear. Tennis shoes are acceptable but are heavy when soaked. River sandals (the kind that strap on fully) are recommended. Old-fashioned "flip-flops" have a way of disappearing downriver. Bring an extra shirt T-shirt for warm weather. For cooler weather, wool or specialty warmth materials such as Gore-Tex are recommended instead of cotton, which tends to retain moisture and keep in the cold.

Shall we Dance? 22
Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine
Photos and story by Shantall Cummins You see it in movies and on TV and it’s hard not to notice when that graceful couple floats across the dance floor effortlessly in sync with addictive melodies. You feel like you’re in a blissful daydream, glamorously whisking away with your dream date. Then you snap out of it and realize that you’d rather run and hide than ever be caught dead dancing in public. You tell yourself there’s no way you could ever dance like that. Wrong! Truth is anyone can learn how to ballroom dance. With practice, dedication and lots of fun, you too can learn to dance and dazzle at no charge. Camp Red Cloud’s Mitchell’s Club and Camp Casey’s Gateway Club offer free weekly ballroom dance classes under the direction of SGT Dennis Kerr of the 2d Infantry Division Band. For a few weeks at a time, each class focuses on a particular style such as Cha Cha, Argentine Tango, Salsa and many others until students feel confident with what they’ve learned. If you don’t think you’re experienced enough or think this class may be way too advanced, think again. “Anyone can participate in my class. No partner or experience required,” says Kerr. Students can rest assured they have one of the best instructors teaching them everything they need to know so they don’t feel like a fool with two left feet stranded on the dance floor. “My qualification would simply be having experience with teaching people how to dance. At one of the variety ballroom dance classes I used to attend, one of the instructors asked if I wanted to teach there. She said they could use me as an instructor. I also taught at another local dance studio and a community college in Sierra Vista,” explains Kerr who has been actively ballroom dancing since 2004 and teaching since 2007. One of the best features of Kerr’s ballroom dance From left to right: Dennis Kerr and Sharon Davila
classes is that they’re 100% free.

“Most group classes range from $5 to $35 for each session depending on the studio. Private lessons usually start out at around $100 to almost $1,000 depending on what dance package you are looking for, the studio you go to or how much you want to dance,” says Kerr. In the past, Kerr has charged $20 an hour for individual private lessons. All things considered,

At the beginning of each class Kerr has students line up in a neat row and teaches them the basic steps of the Cha Cha, a fun and addictive Latin American dance of Cuban origin. He often teaches a particular dance style for a few weeks for the students to really learn it well. Once confident they will do well on their own, he begins teaching something new. Next up: the seductive and extremely popular Argentine Tango. Changing dance styles every few weeks makes it enjoyable for everyone to find a particular dance style that they truly enjoy. “One, two, cha cha cha, three, four, cha cha cha,” chimes Kerr while demonstrating each step as fast or as slow as everyone in the class needs. Each student receives individual attention from Kerr at some point to smooth out the kinks. Don’t want to learn the Cha Cha? No problem, Kerr also takes special requests at the beginning of class and is extremely flexible. Sharon Davila of Camp Casey was all smiles during the class. “I am in this class because I’m preparing for a contest. This is my first time taking ballroom dance classes. Dennis is wonderful, he’s great. I would recommend this class to other people,” gushed Davila. Because they are in such capable hands, dance students are often able to easily catch on to the Cha Cha and are soon showing off on the dance floor. Kerr gives them time to practice to the music, his careful eye ever watchful of their steps. “He’s an awesome teacher, it’s so easy to learn,” says Suzanne Ferguson. PFC Ambar Quintero of Echo Battery, 6-52 ADA explained how she came to take interest in the class. “It’s either, go to the gym or go dancing. I haven’t taken dance classes before, and I actually enjoy it a lot. From what I’ve noticed, I have learned a lot. I’m trying to get my IN THE ZONE

Happy Birthday 45 Years of Army Community Service
July 25, 1965 – The Army Chief of Staff, General Harold K. Johnson, announced the creation of Army Community Service (ACS). Later that same year, regulations were issued outlining the procedures for establishing Army Community Service at Army installations throughout the world. Since that day, Army Community Service has been a mainstay in providing services for active duty, retired Soldiers and their Family members. ACS has played a great role in providing care, comfort, and support of deployed Soldiers and their Family members. As the needs of the Army changes, so do the needs of the Soldiers and the Army Family. ACS has been there adapting to those changes as a place where Family members and Soldiers can get their best start on “Real-Life Solutions for Successful Army Living.” Today Army Community Service provides services in the following areas: Deployment, Mobilization, Relocation Readiness, Information and Referrals, Family Advocacy, Exceptional Family Member Program, Financial Readiness, Army Emergency Relief, Employment Readiness, Volunteer program, Army Family Action Plan, Army Family Team Building, Outreach Program, and Pear Blossom Cottages. The “We Can Do It!” attitude that is the basis of the ACS Staff is alive and well today as it was on July 25, 1965. We are here to serve you, the Soldiers and Family members of the United States Army. Join us in celebrating 45 years of service to the USAG Red Cloud Community and the Second (To None) Infantry Division. Camp Red Cloud: Wednesday, July 14, CRC Bowling Alley, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Camp Stanley: Thursday, July 15, PX area, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Camp Casey: Friday, July 16, PX area, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 46
