SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) Saturday, April 10 & 24
The JSA
OP Dora
The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters in diameter. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where the guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the DMZ where the MDL was originally not cleared marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two UNC oďŹƒcers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues today. Today, the only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with 126, 1 meter-high white stakes, along the boundary line at 10-meter intervals. In the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL Markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than 35 armed guards can be present on each side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. All kinds of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.
This is located within the DMZ and the northernmost observatory in the South where you can see North Korea closest at hand. Propaganda, villages and farmland of North Korea are spread just ahead, and part of the city area of Gaeseong, Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Seong can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel
The 3rd Tunnel was discovered at the point of just 52 km away from Seoul, in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. The tunnel is 1,635m in length, 2m in width, and 2m Pass in height. Also, it is as large in scale as an army of 30,000 fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within an hour. This is the largest one among those that have been discovered and we can certainly guess how strong a North Korean plot to invade Seoul was at that time.
- You must carry your passport or iD card on tour day. - Do not touch any equipment such as microphones or ags belonging to the communist side. - Do not speak with, make any gesture toward or in any way approach or respond to personnel from the other side. - Ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, mini skirts, shorts, military clothing, or sandals (slippers) are not permitted in the tour area. - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed. - Children under 10 years of age are not permitted on this tour.

Wolmido Tour Story & Photos by Shantall Cummins

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and FMWR Magazine
It was an early morning Saturday and the Camp Red Cloud Community Activity Center (CAC) was buzzing with energy as Wolmido Island tourists trickled in. This particular tour has traditionally attracted smaller crowds, but this time 72 members of the USAG-RC community showed up, ready to go. “Eighty-two people signed up at the various CAC locations, but only 72 showed up. It’s common for some folks to sign up and not actually make the trip,” says Sally Hall, manager of the Casey Community Activity Center and in-country tour coordinator. “It far exceeded our expectations because we were only set for one bus. But before the deadline, people kept coming and we had to book another one,” she continued. Long before the bus left, people were seen milling around, happy and smiling, ready for a day of adventure and new horizons. Once all the formalities were finished and everyone got comfortable on the bus, they set out on the first stop of the day; Korea’s only Chinatown. The group was greeted at Chinatown by a massive

stone gate depicting the beautiful Chinese architecture many of us have come to know. Guarded by intricately interwoven Chinese dragons that wrapped around tall pillars in a vine-like fashion, many found it difficult to resist a photo-op. Streets were ornately decorated with red and gold lanterns that hung on beautiful red lampposts, while stores offered an array of Chinese trinkets, lanterns, cheongsams, incense, tea, and just about anything you would imagine finding in a Chinese souvenir shop. Tourist Gloria eyed a few Chinese paintings and was obviously delighted with the tour. When asked about her trip so far and she stated, “I heard that the best way to get around Korea is to go on an FMWR-sponsored tour.

As the day warmed up and appetites increased, it was time to meet up for lunch at one of the local Chinese restaurants. While waiting to be seated, another young Soldier, new to Korea, said she was

having a great time. “It’s really fun, it’s just my first week here, and I’m already on a tour. So, it’s really exciting,” gushed Toni Booker. “We’re having a good time; there’s a lot of culture and learning, a lot of PT,” chipped in Brenda Claiborne, another happy member of the tour group, who enjoyed the moment, as they say, as entrees were served, including a variety of choices from sweet and sour pork, to spicy chicken, egg drop soup, shrimp fried rice, and yakimandu. After lunch the group had another hour to shop in Chinatown and headed for more quaint shops nearby, not wanting to miss a second of opportunity.

Happy tour members, Hairo and Onissa Oritz, found a nearby shop with a friendly and helpful owner. “We love this tour!” exclaimed Hairo. “I love these FMWR tours because I don’t have to think. They bring us here and I get to do whatever and then they take me back. I don’t have to plan or worry about it,” says Onissa.

Soon it was time to head to Wolmido Port and catch the cruise ship. Situated about 1 km off the coast of Incheon, Wolmido Island is always a popular weekend destination with locals. Getting off the bus, everyone was immediately bombarded with a plethora of delicious scents coming from various street food vendors. Wolmido Port, true to the publicity, is vibrant and alive with Korean culture. Tourists sensed the pleasant and intoxicating energy, making it hard not to connect with the culture. On the port were hundreds of locals and an occasional tourist bustling around and gazing at the sea. There were lots of fishermen lined along the edge of the port awaiting their catch of the day.
Once aboard, guests were treated to live entertainment with hundreds of locals moving in tune to Korean dance music. The large four-deck ship was perfect for feeding seagulls, enjoying the cool breeze and taking in the incredible view of the city and nearby mountains. Back on the main deck, the featured entertainment 26

show began with an array of performances varying from middle-eastern belly dancers, to Korean acrobatic and traditional dancing.
(From left to right) Carisa Wade and Anthony White.
After the show, the main deck turned into a Korean dance club as people again danced to the contagiously fun beat, including FMWR tourists Anthony White and Carisa Wade. As the cruise wound to an end many of the group were a little disappointed that it was time to head home. “It was great I would do it again,” commented Toscano Ismael, when asked how he felt about the tour. “The locals were awesome.” “It was a unique experience,” added Tiffany Wesley. “Wonderful, it was great,” concluded Chris Holloway. “All the trips FMWR sponsors are very interesting. I always enjoy every single trip I go on,” said Mirna Cabaza Almodobar from Camp Red Cloud. Most in the group agreed. FMWR gives everyone an opportunity to come together on these tours and leave as friends. FMWR encourages everyone to venture outside of their comfort zone and into the wonderful local Korean culture. “We want everyone to enjoy the tours, to experience as much of Korea as they can while they’re here,” concluded Sally Hall. For more information about upcoming FMWR tours, contact your nearest CAC, and sign up for the next guided tour. You’ll be glad you did. IN THE ZONE

Child Abuse Prevention Month April 2010
April is recognized nationally as Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Area I Family Advocacy Program and Army Community Service join Army communities worldwide in commemorating this month. The Army community is a Family. Soldiers help their peers prepare for promotion boards, pass physical fitness tests and survive on the battlefields. Spouses support one another during deployments and deal with the issues that arise as part of military life. Military children play together and befriend one another when they arrive in new houses and new schools every couple of years. While the military family is a close one, that does not mean that children are safe from the dangers of abuse and neglect. The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) aims to prevent child abuse and neglect within military families, and keep victims safe. FAP can also help families work through problems so military families can develop healthier relationships. Although April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, child abuse prevention efforts are a yeararound focus for the Department of the Army. Child physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and child neglect are key areas of concern. Family Advocacy is dedicated to the prevention, education, prompt reporting, investigation, intervention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. The program provides a variety of services to Soldiers and Families to enhance their parenting and relationship skills and improve their quality of life. This mission is accomplished through a variety of groups, education, counseling and intervention services. The most recent program added to Area I FAP is the New Parent Support Program. The New Parent Support Program is for expectant parents, or parents who have children age three years and younger, and is designed to strengthen parents’ knowledge and skills, to benefit the whole family. Other services and classes offered by FAP include: • • • • • • •

Action is the Key to Preventing Sexual Assaults A
pril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the theme for this year’s observances is “Our Strength is for Defending: Readiness = Respect”. It is no coincidence that when the Army launched its I.A.M. Strong Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program campaign that they chose to highlight Intervention, Action and Motivation as the keys to preventing this cruel and destructive crime. Study after study in the United States bears out the truth that the key to eliminating sexual violence whether off post or the barracks is mobilizing witnesses and bystanders to get involved when they encounter situations where the risk of misconduct is high.
M
ost Soldiers become justifiably upset if not outraged when they find out a neighbor, a friend or a family member has been the victim of a sexual assault. They know that if they had been there, they would have done something to stop it. To the extent that a unit, your unit, truly lives the Army values of a band of brothers and sisters, that same readiness to get involved and stop the crime before it happens should exist. And that readiness, to intervene and act and motivate others to do likewise is the most effective prevention tool we have.
T
he warning signs of a high risk situation are not hard to identify; intoxication, inappropriate sexual comments and other forms of harassment, fraternization and failure to observe visitation and barracks policies are among the most common. We all know senior leadership has made eliminating sexual assaults from the life of the Army a high priority and that anyone who perpetrates a sexual assault is engaging in criminal behavior that can have life-long repercussions. We see and hear these messages quite often. Unfortunately classes and posters and verbal condemnations and declarations alone will not eliminate acts of sexual violence against fellow Soldiers. Being proactive or taking charge of a high-risk situation is the key to eliminating any potential trouble.
W
e are observing Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout April because this problem is serious and we are centering are observations on the theme “Our Strength is for Defending: Readiness = Respect” because we need every Soldier to commit to defending the strength of our Army by taking action when they see high risk situations or when they have evidence that a sexual assault has occurred. You can be part of the solution by making your own commitment to act, intervene and motivate to prevent sexual assaults, by reporting assault incidents and by encouraging victims to seek assistance by calling the 24 hour Sexual Assault Hotline at DSN 158 or from any phone by calling 0505-764-5700.
