SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

Gordon Imrie Camp Red Cloud Library Manager
“My main focus is on customer service” “I love to interact with customers, find out what they are interested in and, if there are any questions or concerns, I want to do whatever it takes to satisfy them. After all, that’s why we’re here, isn’t it?”
Camp Red Cloud
Library Story by Frank A. DeSilva
Photos by Kim, Ho Yong When it comes to apples and oranges, Gordon Imrie can tell you a lot more about them than you may care to know. Imrie, Camp Red Cloud Library Manager, started out in life working the land, so to speak, on his father’s small dairy farm in New Zealand. If he wasn’t busy feeding or milking cows, young Gordie was tending the garden, making things grow. One green thumb led to another, and in due time he earned a college degree in Horticulture. But life on the farm for Imrie just wasn’t meant to be. Working with books, he reasoned, was more inviting than working with bails of hay. At the age of 19, after only 2 years of college under his belt, Imrie had saved up

enough money to do what every young man and woman in New Zealand does. He packed up his bags and headed overseas. “I had to do my ‘OE’ thing (overseas experience). I had no idea exactly what I was going to do in life, but I knew it wasn’t going to be milking cows 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” Imrie explained in a recent In The Zone interview. And with that Imrie set off to America, Yakima, Washington, to be exact, and, using his background in horticulture, landed a job on a fruit farm, tending apple and orange orchards. Although he was good at his new job and loved living in America, the urge to move on was strong. Eventually

Imrie ended up in Europe, working in various jobs from farming to construction, including a stint in Germany working at yet another apple orchard. “One day my brother Neil, who was living in Japan doing his ‘OE’ thing, invited me to visit him in Japan. Having nothing else going on at the time, I said ‘sure, why not?’,” Imrie said. The ‘visit’ turned out to be a bit longer than either of them had planned, and Imrie says he couldn’t have been happier. “I felt honored to have an opportunity to live in Japan. I spent several years there, teaching English in various communities. It was an exciting

time for me,” he says. Exciting indeed. While teaching in Saga, Japan, Imrie met a young lady from Eugene, Oregon who was also teaching English to Japanese students. After a ‘robust’ two-year courtship, Gordon and Francine were married. They moved to Oregon for several years while Imrie finished college. Meanwhile, both yearned to return to the Orient. They soon got their wish when Imrie was hired to teach English in Hokkaido, Japan. While there he pursued his true calling, a love of books, studying nights and weekends to earn a degree in library science. After a few trips back to the States, plus a visit or two ‘down under,’ Imrie

ended up with a job offer he couldn’t refuse; Reference Librarian at the post library in Yongsan, Korea. “I saw it as a great opportunity,” Imrie says. I said to my wife, ‘yes, let’s go!’” He remained in that position for nearly 2 years before he noticed a job announcement for a Library manager at Camp Red Cloud earlier this year. “I was ready to move on, to accept new challenges,” Imrie says. “Being a Library Manager was something I aspired to. I felt I could contribute.” He started his new job last June and has been busy making improvements there ever since. “I was pleasantly surprised to find out I had a great staff of professionals

already working there,” Imrie says. “Mr. Choe, Chon Sik, my assistant, has been here for about 8 years and he knows the needs of this community better than anyone. I’m very fortunate to have him on the team. He’s been invaluable to me.” The library staff currently numbers 5, including Imrie. As libraries go, the CRC library, located in building S-58 (same as the Education Center), is considered a small facility. Imrie says they handle anywhere from 200 to 300 customers a day, but could easily handle much more. The library boasts some 13,000 books, 5,000 CDs/DVDs, 20 computers and a wide variety of periodicals for customers to use.

They are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and all U.S. and Korean holidays. “My main focus is on customer service,” Imrie says matter-of-factly. “I love to interact with customers, find out what they are interested in and, if there are any questions or concerns, I want to do whatever it takes to satisfy them. After all, that’s why we’re here, isn’t it?” “I’m also very happy that there are so many people here willing to help whenever we need it. If I run into a problem or need assistance of any kind, there’s always someone here willing to lend a hand or provide advice. It’s good to know that this Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation Department

(FMWR) has a strong team of professionals who care about their work,” he says. Meanwhile, Imrie keeps moving forward, making subtle changes here and there to improve customer service. As a seasoned professional, he knows how important it is to keep up with the times. “Taking care of customers is a lot like growing quality apples and oranges,” he says. “You nourish them and help them grow. Our library is here to provide the best support possible. It’s the only way we know how.” Z

Need to log on to a free computer for a quick e-mail back home? Need to scan a document to e-mail to a friend but don’t have the money right now? How about watching a hot new movie on DVD at no charge? How about using your own personal computer in a wi-fi environment? All these things and more are available free of charge at your Camp Red Cloud Library, located in building S-58 next door to the Education Center. Here you’ll find the top 20 or so DVDs on the market, the current top ten book sellers (fiction and non-fiction), and the latest computers (both Microsoft and Macintosh machines), all available to you free of charge. If you like, you can even check out a CD or DVD and watch it right in the Library (4 television screens for your viewing pleasure). How about your favorite TV series? Missed an episode of your favorite television series? No problem, check out the impressive list of television programs they have on hand. Chances are they have it. Can’t find what you’re looking for? No problem, just ask a library staff member for assistance. You’ll be surprised how responsive and helpful they can be. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, chances are they can find it for you in a hurry. Have a term paper or other important document you need copies of? The library is the place to go. For just 10 cents a copy you can crank out as many black and while copies as you like. “We like to respond to the market,” says Library manager Gordon Imrie. “As long as customers let us know what they need or want, we’ll do what we can to get it. We’re here to serve them.” If you’re not able to physically visit the library, you can always give them a call at 732-6194. The CRC library is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and all U.S. and Korean holidays. 16

The area is well known for its’ vibrant night life and has recently been designated as a special tourist zone. It’s famous for being one of the largest markets in South Korea, which has been in continuous operation since 1792. The busy shopping area is filled with a variety of specialty shops, restaurants and street vendors with something for everyone. You’ll find a delightful selection of clothing shops, handbags, hats, shoes, jewelry and antique boutiques just to name a few, all at some of the lowest prices anywhere in South Korea. With various products mentioned above, high quality leather products can be found here at reasonable prices, as well as various types of traditional Korean souvenirs. Be careful, counterfeit goods and clothing are ubiquitous and of varying quality, but some genuine goods which are produced in Korea for the international market can be found here. Osan Street Market is also known to have various tailors that peddle their services for making custom-made suits. Many restaurants serving international dishes are also found in this area, which are not widely available in Korea. If you have yet to experience the Korean Demilitarized Zone, chances are you haven’t quite explored Korea. This is your opportunity to see, first-hand, the purpose of your duty in Korea. The DMZ is a strip of land running across the Korean peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ cuts the Korean peninsula roughly in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It is 155 miles (248 km) long and approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and is the most heavily armed border in the world. Upon the creation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 1948, it became a de facto international border and one of the most tense fronts of the Cold War. The Korean War conflict, which claimed over three million lives and divided the Korean peninsula along ideological lines, still marks history as the bloodiest war in the world.
Following the tour of the DMZ, to include the Joint Security Area, you’ll experience Tunnel Three, the “Tunnel of Aggression.” Tunnel Three was discovered on October 17, 1978. It is located 52 Km from Seoul. Approximately, 10,000 soldiers can move through this tunnel in one hour. When this tunnel was discovered, North Koreans insisted, steadfastly, that it was made by South Koreans to invade North Korea, but this proved to be false. Following the tour of Tunnel three, you’ll be guided to Mt. Dora Observation Platform located nearby. From this observation platform, you’ll clearly see North Korean military personnel, farmers and civilians at a distance. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn on this tour. Stop by the nearest Community Activity Center and sign up today. Don’t

Today there is a wonderful variety of both modern and traditional cross stitch designs available for stitchers. If you would like to learn cross stitch and play a part in this tradition, we invite you to visit the Arts & Craft Center at CRC Bldg T-912 and try it for yourself. Army Family Action Plan 25th Year Anniversary “If the Army would just ask me how to fix a problem, I would tell them just how to do it!” Got Issues? Make recommendations and get results. I know you can be a positive part for change in this community. The AFAP Program gives you the chance to do just that! AFAP is a program the Army put in place to ensure that standards of living in the Army keep up with changing times. AFAP gives Soldiers, Retirees, DA Civilians, and their Families the opportunity to let Army leadership know what is working and what is not and their ideas about what will fix it. Are there issues that you wish to address to the command? If so, the Army Family Action Plan is the way to go. USAG Red Cloud conducts an AFAP Conference annually. The 2009 installation conference will be held at the Digital Conference Center, Camp Casey from 18-20 November 2008. The purpose of the conference is to draw together a representation of America’s Army in an atmosphere of education and decisionmaking. The objectives of the conference are to reinforce efforts to enrich the quality of life of all members of the community, to prioritize the top three issues affecting quality of life and formulate recommendations through workgroups and to educate delegates on Army/installation management, giving them knowledge on how to use resources. The conference also allows participants to develop plans through the use of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who will assist the workgroups. There are many opportunities to be a part of the AFAP process. You can be a Delegate, a Subject Matter Expert (SME) or Facilitator, Transcriber, Recorder or Issue support person (FRTI). There are specific work groups that you can be assigned to assist such as Medical/Dental, Housing, Force 44

Support, Entitlements, etc. Issues within the community that the Garrison or Commanding General can resolve will be resolved. Issues beyond the scope of USAG Red Cloud are forwarded to our next major command, IMCOM. IMCOM conducts an annual AFAP conference to resolve issues that have been passed to United States Army Garrison (USAG) commands on the peninsula. Issues beyond the scope of IMCOM may be forwarded to the Department of the Army, which also conducts an annual conference. The public is invited to participate in the Issue Brief-out Session to the Commanding General on the third and final day of the conference, 20 November 2008, at the Digital Conference Center on Camp Casey. Everyone is welcome to attend the 2 p.m. session. Leaders are especially encouraged to attend. If you are interested in participating in the local conference, or want to submit an issue for the conference, please fill out the submit Issue form at http://ima.korea.army.mil/area1/sites/local and clicking on the Family link and action plan. If you wish to be a part of the change process in the 2nd Infantry Division/USAG Red Cloud community, do not sit back and complain about issues. Step up and help make that change. Questions about the program may be directed to the Army Community Service or by contacting the Program Manager, Charles Lyons at 732-7314. Army Family Team Building Are you familiar with the Army Family Team Building (AFTB) program offered at the Army Community Service? If your answer is “No,” you’re not alone. Many Soldiers and Families in our community do not know about AFTB. This program is essential if you wish to know more about the Army and appreciate its way of life. The program gives you a whole new perspective, helps you change your expectations to a more realistic view of what the Army can help you with and what you, as a Soldier or military Family, can do for yourself. For new Spouses and even for those married to their Soldier for a long time, understanding the military pay system, benefits and entitlements and the many acronyms that they use in their conversations will help you communicate with them better. If you do not know what “LES,” GI Party, “MTF” or “XO” means, you would after attending AFTB Level 1 class. Level II covers communication, introduction to leadership and management and most important, personal growth. Level III covers advanced knowledge in building more skills in leadership, team development and advanced problem solving techniques. Those who wish to become AFTB Instructors can attend the Instructor’s Training Course that covers all areas of skills needed to present quality programs; understand adult learning processes and techniques that will make you a self-confident and knowledgeable Instructor. Within the past year, AFTB Instructor Course graduates included Department of Defense civilian employees, Soldiers and Spouses.
If you would like to attend AFTB classes, there are two ways for community members of USAG Red Cloud to participate. You can go online at http:// www.myarmylifetoo.com, register and go through the training. This allows you to work according to your own pace. You can also attend AFTB classes and experience the fun of active interaction with instructors and other attendees. Questions about the program can be directed to the Army Community Service or by contacting the Program Manager, Charles Lyons, at 732-7314. Make ACS your first choice - not your last!!

Military & family life consultant program MFLC: Military & Family Life Consultant Program Offers Confidential Assistance When and Where You Need It
Soldiers and their family members in USAG-RC/Area I have another valuable Army Community Service (ACS) program available to them with the recent introduction of the Military & Family Life Consultant (MFLC) Program to our community. The new program offers short term, situational, problem-solving counseling services to service members and their families through private sessions that are often held away from traditional on-post community service agencies. The new program, a supplement to traditional military family support services, works with families, individuals, couples and children to provide non-medical problem identification counseling services in a totally private environment. Rather than visit an on-post ACS branch for assistance, concerned individuals can now call a single non-DoD phone number and speak with a highly-trained, licensed mental health consultant who will make arrangements to meet the at a pre-determined time and place. These strictly private, confidential sessions can involve any number of issues or concerns, including the impact of stress, deployments, family reunions following deployments and the stresses of military lifestyle in general. Services can be provided on or off post and may include individuals, couples, families or groups. According to the American Psychological Association, a growing number of military personnel and their families are reporting emotional problems resulting from deployment stress. The MFLC program was created four years ago to help individuals and family members cope with these and other social issues. Some of the non-medical counseling services available through the new MFLC program include anger management, conflict resolution, communication, parenting, relationship issues, decision making skills, productivity at work, deployment stress, reintegration: warrior to citizen, relocation adjustment, separation, coping skills, building resiliency, homesickness, loss & grief and emotional well-being. Anyone in the USAG-RC/Area I community who would like to take advantage of this new outreach assistance program should call 010-3147-0756 for confidential assistance within the CRC/Camp Stanley area, or 010-8691-3666 for the Camp Casey community.
