SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

y l i m a F y Arm Army life is not easy or perfect, and there are a lot of challenges. If you've spent any time in the Army community, you know that. What you might not know is that when you come across a problem and think, "It would be so much better if it were done like this," the Army wants to know. They want to do something about it. Army Family Action Plan, or AFAP, is a program the Army began to ensure that Army life keeps up with changing times. It gives Soldiers, Retirees, DA Civilians, and their Families the opportunity to let Army leadership know what is working, what is not and their ideas about how to fix it. There's an Area I AFAP conference every year. This year’s conference is just around the corner, October 26-28 at USAG Casey's Warriors Club and the Casey Community Activity Center. AFAP brings people of all different walks of Army life together, making sure that everyone is represented. For example, if a community had a total of one hundred members, made up of fifty soldiers, forty family members and ten civilians, there would be five soldiers, four family members and one civilian to represent their demographic in an AFAP group. Once the groups are together at the AFAP conference, they vote on the most important problems submitted on the issue submission sheets and make recommendations 46

about how to fix them. After all the groups have made their recommendations, the whole AFAP conference votes on the three most important issues facing Area I. Want to get involved? There are some different ways you can help. You can submit an issue by going to your local ACS and filling out an issue submission sheet, e-mailing redcloudafap@korea.army.mil, or by filling out an issue sheet and droping it in an AFAP submission box. AFAP issue boxes will be located at your local Commissary, Post Exchange, Dining Facilities, Family Readiness Center, ACS and Pear Blossom Cottage. At Camp Red Cloud, one will be located at Freeman Hall and on Camp Casey, one will be at Maude Hall. You can also submit an issue by filing an ICE comment. More information is available online at redcloud.korea.army.mil/afap.asp. Want to be one of the people deciding the outcomes of issues submitted? Be a delegate. Want to help behind the scenes? Join the AFAP staff. Contact Mr. Charles Lyons, the AFAP coordinator by e-mailing lyonscan@ korea.army.mil or calling 732-7314.

been given to them from all of the United States Army Garrison (USAG) commands in South Korea. Issues beyond the scope of IMCOM can be forwarded to the Department of the Army, which also conducts an annual conference. The public is welcome to participate in the Issue BriefOut Session to the Commanding General on the third and final day of the conference, October 28, 2 p.m. at the Camp Casey Community Activity Center. Commanders and leadership are especially encouraged to attend. Have more questions? Give Army Community Service a call. You can also like us on Facebook. Search for "Area I Army Family Action Plan (AFAP)." You can also find more information on the USAG Red Cloud home page, redcould.korea.army.mil. Get involved. Step up and help create a better community for yourself and your Army family.

Do you think life in Area I could be better? If so, how? Let us know. You can submit issues about specific problems in local communities, theater-wide problems or Armywide policies that need to be changed. Once groups make recommendations about the issues, the issues can be resolved locally, regionally or Armywide. The issues within the community that the Garrison or Commanding General can fix will be resolved. Issues beyond the scope of specific garrisons are forwarded to the next major command, Installation Management Command, IMCOM. Domestic Violence Prevention October is Domestic Violence Prevention Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of domestic violence, educate the community about the signs of abuse and emphasize the negative impact it has on family readiness. This year’s theme is “Imagine an Army Free of Domestic Abuse: Prepare-Prevent-Protect.” Each one of us has a responsibility to help prevent domestic violence. There is really no known direct cause of domestic violence but there are many contributing factors including communication issues, stress, and lack of anger management skills. Domestic violence affects us all. The Army Community Service (ACS) Family Advocacy Program (FAP) provides prevention and education services in its efforts to prevent domestic violence. The FAP offers Commanders training on domestic violence and provides annual domestic violence awareness for every military member and law enforcement agency on Army installations. FAP also provides classes to meet the needs of our military and civilian community. Soldiers, civilians and their families may attend classes aimed at preventing domestic violence and making families and individuals healthier. FAP offers life skills classes that include stress management, anger management, meditation and communication seminars. These programs focus on preventing domestic violence by teaching skills to cope with everyday life and unexpected events. What can you do to prevent domestic violence? - Speak out against domestic violence. Talk about the seriousness of domestic violence with friends, family and other community members. - Call Military Police if you see or hear evidence of domestic violence. - Support a friend or family member who may be in an abusive relationship. Encourage him or her to report the abuse. - Raise your children to respect others and to treat others as they would like to be treated. Lead by example. - Participate in prevention and awareness events for Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
