Jeju-do Island is one of the nine provinces of Korea and is only 1 hour from Seoul by air. As a result of its isolated location and romantic tropical image, Jejudo has become a favorite retreat with honeymooners and tourists. The island has a mild marine climate with four distinct seasons and an average yearly temperature of 15°C (60°F). Seongsan il Chulbong, or Sunrise peak, is one of 360 parasitic volcanoes that dot the island. Scaling up a steep slope, the trail takes you to the western edge of the crater. A climb up this narrow trail rewards the climber with a most spectacular view, especially at sunrise. You will also get a chance to visit Sangumburi Crater, one of the three major craters on the island, the others being aengnokdam lake at the summit of Mt. Hallasan and Sunrise Peak at Seongsanpo. Sangumburi Crater is about 2km in circumference. It is home to some 420 different species of subtropical, temperate and alpine flowering plants and is known by botanists as a “floral treasure house.”

Oedolgae is a high outcropping created by a volcanic eruption 1.5 million years ago. Legend has it that during the later Goryeo dynasty, General Choe Yeong disguised the rock to appear like a giant military general to scare off Mongolian soldiers lurking on Beomseom Islet. Jeongbang Falls are the only falls in Asia that drop directly to the sea and is of the three most famous on Jejudo Island, along with Cheonjiyeon and Cheongjeyeon falls. Tour includes: round-trip airfare, transportation from JeJu Airport to a 4-star hotel for 2 nights, two hotel breakfasts, two lunches, one half-day tour, and one full day of leisure. Register from December 13-30. Payment must be received by December 30. For more information, call 732-9246/6821.

Dongdaemun Market Dongdaemun market in Seoul is a great place for foreigners to shop. The name “Dongdaemun” means “Eastern Great Gate.” At one time, the city of Seoul was surrounded by a wall. Outside the eastern gate, people used to gather to buy and sell goods, and as time passed, this gathering developed into a large market. The perimeter of the city has moved, but the gate and its market have not. Dongdaemun market is comprised of a number of multistory buildings with merchants’ shops and stalls strewn between them. These shops and stalls sell a large range of goods including fashionable clothing, electronic goods, sporting goods, jewelry, shoes, bags, tools, hiking and camping goods and much more. Opening and closing times vary somewhat between shops and stalls, but in general they are open all day and night. Get out and shop till you drop with FMWR.

Casey Bowling Presents‌

The Reindeer Roundup and The 12 Days of Christmas Strike Off Competitions Regular bowling rates apply (Ages 12 and under). The Grinch is at it again. His heart is at least one size too small and he has given in to his temptation to steal Christmas one last time. This time he has hatched a very detailed and evil plan not only to steal Christmas but to also snatch all twelve days of Christmas! Imagine no drummers drumming, no pipers piping, no golden rings, nor milk maids milking. Imagine no Christmas at all! The Grinch has even gone as far as to rustle all of Santa’s reindeer, his sleigh, red costume and oh yes, all seven of his helpers. Mr. Grinch has magically hidden them at Camp Casey Lanes and unless something is done quickly, Christmas is doomed. The Casey Bowling Center has looked around and has been unable to locate any of the missing Christmas ingredients needed to put Christmas back on track. Your help is needed in this race against time. You and your parents can make a difference. After the Grinch hid all of the objects he stole, he was in such a hurry to get out of town that he did not notice his detailed master plan had slipped out of his pocket and fallen to the floor. They remained there until the next morning where it was discovered by no other than the Christmas Scare Crow. Thinking it was very important, the Christmas Scare Crow began to alert everyone that came through Casey Lanes. This important clue is the key to recovering all of the missing Christmas items. On the clue card is a special tasking for discovering the hidden items. Based on the number of pins knocked down, new items will be unlocked. Good little boys and girls may pick up the special clue card at the front desk. Make sure to keep this very important clue card safe and get it stamped by the Casey Elf at the front desk for a chance to win amazing prizes. For more information, please call 730-4577.

The 12 Days of Christmas Strike Off December 1-24 To unlock the 12th day of Christmas, participant must bowl one strike. To unlock the 11th day of Christmas, participant must bowl two strikes. To unlock the 10th day of Christmas, participant must bowl three strikes and continue to add one additional strike for each day of Christmas to be unlocked having to bowl 12 strikes on the 1st day of Christmas. Only the most diligent bowlers of all ages have the ability to break the magic seals needed to restore the above items. Note: Tasks must be accomplished each day, for example, if a bowler throws three strikes on December 13, only one strike will be credited on that bowlers task card. All bowlers accomplishing 100% of the task list by close of business Christmas Eve, December 24, will compete against each other on December 25 at 2 p.m. to determine the 12 Days of Christmas Strike-Off Champion. Bowlers will compete to throw the most strikes without having three open frames. Spares will be counted as neutrals and will not count for points nor will they count as a failed open frame. Winner gets ********!

Join the fun. Help the Scarecrow save Christmas! For more information, call 730-4577.

NEVER too young to Bowl Story by Soojin Atwater, Photos by Kim, Ho Young As the cold winter wind hits Korea, Families in Area I/USAG Red Cloud turn to indoor entertainment activities for their children, especially toddlers. Evan Cornett, age 2 years and six months, has already found his favorite indoor activity at Camp Casey-knocking down pins at the Bowling Center. Evan has been recognized by Gerald Keener, manager of the Camp Casey Bowling Center, as the most energetic and passionate young bowler in the Casey Community. “Evan’s enthusiasm, interest in the game and ability to mimic the Soldier bowlers around him in both style and mannerism is remarkable for a child of his age,” Keener says, describing Evan as the “best” bowler at Camp Casey Bowling Center he has seen in years. Evan and his mother, Rhonda Cornett, a 1st grade teacher at the Camp Casey DODDS School, came to Korea in August 2010. Evan attends a local day center in Dongducheon while his Mom teaches at the school during the day. Once he gets picked up from the day care center, Cornett always looks for an afternoon activity for both Evan and herself to enjoy. Camp Casey Bowling Center is the current place of choice for both of them. “When Evan was 18 months old, my friends and I took him to a bowling center for his first time. Luckily, all of the bases that we’ve traveled to had at least one bowling center. He copies what Soldiers do on lanes. That’s how he learned how to bowl,” explains Cornett on how she introduced Evan to the game.

Seen together at the Bowing Center, it is obvious what keeps Evan interested in bowling. His mother’s enthusiastic cheering identifies her as Evan’s biggest fan. “Are you ready? You go and throw it hard, Evan,” Mom says. On her mark, he holds the six pound bowling ball tight with both hands and speeds towards the approach line. Then Evan brings the ball back and throws it hard with one big push, using all the strength and momentum his little body can generate. “Boom!” The bowling ball rolls with Evan’s energy, knocking down several pins. “Hurray! You got it, Evan! Give me high fives!” Mom exclaims. Cornett motivates Evan with her compliments and excitement and Evan runs to her, throws high fives and pleads, “One more, please!” with a proud and joyful face. “I’m not a bowler. I bowl every now and then,” says Cornett. “But as you can see, Evan just loves bowling. When he bowls he is very happy. I wish Evan happiness at whatever he does. He has many interests,” adds the proud mother of the athletic two year old, "but bowling is his first love." “In addition to the bowling center, we visit the Library often to check out books. Evan likes the tables on the floor so he can sit and read. We also frequent the Pear Blossom cottage. That is one of the best facilities I’ve ever seen for Families and their children. Evan loves going there, as I do, because I can watch T.V., wash my clothes, get on the internet, converse with my adult peers or anything that I want while Evan is playing with other children,” says Cornett, appreciating what Family and MWR facilities offer her family at Camp Casey. “The best benefit at the MWR facilities are the employees. I have been on many bases, but the employees here are so helpful. They go well above and beyond their job description for those of us who frequent the facilities,” Cornett says sharing her experience with a Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (Family and MWR) Marketing reporter during a recent interview with In the Zone

36

Magazine. “I notice many Family units are coming into the bowling center to spend an evening with us since Command Sponsorship became available in our community. As a result, we now cater more birthday parties, child services events and juvenile open bowling,” Keener states, describing the increased number of events the Bowling Center offers for Family members. “In addition, starting January we’re planning to offer a Saturday morning youth bowling league in partnership with Casey Elementary School,” he says. “The best teacher is repetition and the development of correct bowling mechanics. I encourage people to experiment with different lines of approach and delivery. When you find a combination that feels comfortable, stick with it, find the perfect strike flow of motion and be consistent in your game,” Keener advises beginners. “Evan is on the right track. I predict that if he continues his current trend, he’ll be a 200 average bowler and roll a 300 game before he reaches the age of 16,” commented Keener as he confirmed the unlimited potential and possibilities he sees in young Evan. Evan’s highest score so far is 95. His bowling average is 85 with the gutter bumpers up. But more importantly, he loves to throw his energy into every try to the cheers and applause he usually receives from grown-ups, building up his esteem and producing a happy, confident child. So, the next time you see Evan at the Camp Casey Bowling Center, remember to cheer him on and give him a big high five. If you have any questions on bowling or bowling programs at the Camp Casey Bowling Center, don’t hesitate to call Keener at 730-4577. Army Emergency Relief Press Release “Helping the Army Take Care of Its Own”

Army Emergency Relief Earns 4-Star Rating Fifth Consecutive Award Places AER in Select Top 5% Army Emergency Relief (AER) recently earned its fifth consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. According to Charity Navigator, only 5% of the charities they rate have received at least 5 consecutive 4-star evaluations. This highly coveted rating reflects AER’s sound fiscal management and program efficiency in providing financial assistance. In 2009, 89 cents of every dollar spent by AER was for the program costs involved in taking care of Soldiers and their Families. AER is the Army’s own military aid society, founded in 1942 in response to the need for Soldiers and their Families

For more information, see your Chain of Command or visit your local Army Community Centers.

who were experiencing financial emergencies in World War II. Since its founding, AER has provided over $1.3 Billion of financial assistance. AER provides financial assistance for such needs as emergency travel, housing, car repair, food and utilities. With assistance provided in the form of a no-interest loans and grants, AER provides the Army a valuable resource in helping take care of Soldiers and their Families. AER assistance is available to Soldiers and their Families wherever they are located and the amount of assistance approved is only limited by a valid need. Soldiers and their Family members requiring AER assistance need only contact their Chain of Command or local AER office. The Camp Casey AER Office is located in building 2306. Based on reciprocal agreements, Soldiers and Families not near an Army Installation AER office can seek assistance from the Air Force Aid Society, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance or a local chapter of the American Red Cross.
