ITZ: What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Miguel: We try to play every genre, but mostly rock, reggae, alternative or R&B. ITZ: Who would you say are your greatest musical influences? Miguel: For me Michael Jackson. For the band I think Bob Marley and the Wailers, Korn, Metallica and Dream Theater. ITZ: How long have you all known each other? Miguel: Well the girls are new, but the guys have been together a long time.
The band, made up of members Miguel, lead singer/ percussion; Miley, singer; Jeff, keyboards; Melissa, singer; Anthony, percussion; Ronald, lead guitarist; Michael, bassist and Aubrey, singer, are leaving their melodic stamps on Soldiers, their families and civilians all over Warrior Country. In the Zone magazine an the opportunity to sit down and chat with members of the upbeat variety band currently touring Area I until March. Here’s what this modern cover band members had to say.
ITZ: How did you meet? Miguel: Back in ‘05 the band needed a brand new male vocalist. A friend of mine contacted me saying that he knew of a band that needed a vocalist and that’s how we met. ITZ: Where did you form the band? Miguel: In the Philippines. ITZ: What inspired you to make music together? Miguel: Well, our bassist and drummer were friends since high school. Back in our area lots
of artists and bands live there and we all love music. That’s how we started. ITZ: Where in the Philippines are you from? Miguel: Manila. ITZ: Have you had any ‘formal’ musical training? Miguel: No, all self taught. ITZ: Where have you performed? Miguel: Just here at various American bases; including Osan and Camp Casey. ITZ: Have you traveled abroad before to perform? Miguel: Just to Korea. This is our third time. ITZ: What are your favorite venues? Miguel: Actually we don’t care about the places as long as people appreciate the music and what we do. That’s the most important thing. ITZ: And how do you feel about that being here in Korea? Do you find that the military welcomes you? Do you find them to be good fans? Is it a collaboration? Miguel: The two songs that we wrote were by Michael, the bassist, and me. ITZ: Do you guys rehearse a lot or do you get on the stage and go? Miguel: No, we rehearse a lot. ITZ: What are rehearsals like? Miguel: Well, tough actually. Long hours. We want to get it right. The audience deserves that. ITZ: How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together? Miguel: Back in high school it was like mainstream rock. Then we came here to Korea and learned songs that we hadn’t heard before. That was kind of cool because it adds to our repertoire. We had to learn some new songs, so that helped us. Featuring the best bowler at Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center… Q: Where are you from? A: My hometown is York, Pennsylvania. Q: How long have you been bowling? A: Since I was nine years old. My father got me into bowling and golf so that I would stay out of trouble. Q: How did you learn bowling? A: All my family bowls. They are not into bowling as much as I am, but they enjoy bowling. When I was growing up and became older, all my friends bowled. I always had friends to bowl with. Also, I like to listen to older experienced bowlers. They always have tips to improve my skill. Then practice comes next. Practice is important to achieve consistency until bowling becomes a game of feel.
SFC Mathew Murray from Camp Jackson has been honored as “the best bowler” at the Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center. Enjoying his 3rd tour in Korea, SFC Murray teaches instructors and certifies over 100 Sergeants a year at the Eighth Army NCO Academy, Camp Jackson. Despite his busy academy schedule, SFC Murray is one the most frequent visitors to the Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center where he practices consistently in order to hone his bowling skills.
Q: How often do you bowl? A: I visit this facility, Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center, just about every day. I sometimes travel to the Camp Casey Bowling Center to participate in tournaments.
Q: What is your average and highest score? A: Here at the Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center, my average is 191. In the States I average 205 depending on lane condition. I’ve had three 300 games and two 298 games as my highest. Q: What is the best way to learn bowling? A: Keep practicing and get some coaching. Coaching does help improve your bowling skill. Q: Do you have any league/tournament that you attended in the bowling Center? A: Eighth Army Bowling Tournament in 2010 is the one. It was held at the Camp Casey Bowling Center and I was in the top three. Currently, I am bowling in the Friday Night League here at the Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center. We have a team from the Academy. Q: Do you know about the $50 bowling Card promotion offered here at Camp Red Cloud Bowling Center? If so, do you have one? A: When the card came out I got myself injured so I decided not to purchase one since I won’t be using it as often as I should. But I think the card is worth the money; especially the younger bowlers can take advantage of the card. Another great offer for Soldiers is the ‘Soldiers bowl FREE’ program offered during weekdays. It’s a great opportunity for both U.S. and KATUSAS. I really appreciate it.
“Soldiers bowl Free” program is available weekdays at all Area I Bowling Centers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, please call 732- 9187. IN THE ZONE

Get Capone by Jonathan Eig (Simon & Schuster, $28)
Reviewed by Chris Richcreek There are some authors whose books you look for because you know the writing will be great, no matter the subject. Jonathan Eig is one of those authors. His book about baseball legend Lou Gehrig’s life, “Luckiest Man,” was exceptional. His follow-up, “Opening Day,” the story of Jackie Robinson’s first major-league season, was a solid piece of work as well. With his latest, “Get Capone,” Eig has left baseball behind to focus on an infamous figure — Al Capone. The subtitle of the book is “The Secret Plot That Captured America’s Most Wanted Gangster.” Eig shows how President Herbert Hoover and his Cabinet were focused on finding a way to jail Capone, who basically ruled Chicago throughout the 1920s by providing the one thing wanted by an audience already tired of the recently enacted 18th Amendment establishing Prohibition: bootleg liquor. Eig’s effort to detail the Capone legend — aided by access to government documents that were made available only in the past few years — has him trying to cut through the various half-truths and myths that sprung up through the decades. As Eig stated in his Sources section, “Nothing in these pages is invented or embellished.” He presents his case as to why Capone was not the mastermind of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and, like others before, punctures the myth of superlawman Eliot Ness. Throughout the book, Eig offers a well-written portrait of the times and a deep insight into the man who not only ruled a small corner of the world, but garnered a lot of publicity in the process. Once again, Eig proves that his name on the cover makes for good reading inside.
