DMZ The Joint Security Area (JSA) The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where the guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) officers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues until today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than thirty five armed guards can be present on each side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. All kinds of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.

Observation Post (OP) Dora As the northernmost observatory in South Korea, OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Song can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2 meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within an hour. The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so far, indicating North Korea’s desire to invade Seoul during that time.
All participants must have their passport or I.D. card on them during the tour. DMZ Tour Guidelines - When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any equipment belonging to North Korea. - Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach or respond to personnel from the other side. - Military or other official considerations may prevent entry into the JSA. - Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, shorts, military clothes, and sandal/slippers are not permitted during the tour. - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed. - Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.
Dress Code - Jeans with holes not allowed - Shorts and skirts must fall at or below the knees - Collared shirts preferred - Open-toed shoes are not allowed

Yellow Sea Sightseeing The Wolmido Island was once an island about 1 km off the Incheon coast, but merged to become a part of the mainland. The name Wolmido Island comes from the shape of the island as it resembles the tail of a half moon. There are many cafes and seafood restaurants by the West Sea in Wolmido, so you can savor your dinner and enjoy a beautiful view. There are about 50 seafood restaurants all in one area, making it easy to find variety. The culture street starts with the Doodle Pillar, and continues on with the meeting square, Arts square, performance square, good harvest square and others. On these squares, spontaneous performances happen all the time, and the street artists can draw you a sketch on the spot. A not-to-be-missed tourist attraction at Wolmido Island is the Play Hill. It’s not as large as other theme parks in Korea, but the Apollo disco and the Viking rides here are famous for their firstclass thrills. You can also get on a cruise every hour to look around the island and feel the cool breeze of the West Sea and watch the wandering seagulls that frequent this island.
China Town Bukseong-dong China Town, the only China Town in Korea, is truly a little China in Korea. There are Chinese restaurants lining both sides of the street, traditional Chinese gates (Paeru), Uiseongdang Chinese temple and kung-fu hall, Jungsan School for Children, a mural depicting a Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the statue of Confucius overlooking the sea, and other traditional Chinese buildings, along with the Korea-China Cultural Center. All of these great attractions make for a very novel tourist course. 24

Feeling Right at Home at the Camp Hovey Bowling Center Great food and outstanding customer service

line of Uniformed Soldiers forms at the cash register to place their lunch order while dozens of hamburger patties and buns sizzle on a nearby 4-foot by 2-foot grill. Two very busy employees politely ask those waiting to order for a little more patience while they continue to feverously work the grill and take care of customers who have already ordered. But nobody appears upset at the delay or growing line of waiting customers. Rather, they calmly take it in stride, chatting with their buddies while waiting their turn, knowing from experience that the wait will be more
than worth it. That’s the weekday lunch hour scene commonly found at the small, but very popular Camp Hovey Bowling Center Snack Bar. Now known as ‘the hang out place’ at Camp Hovey, the bowling center and snack bar have made some impressive upgrades over the past few years. Even though the Bowling Center is tucked away behind the small Hovey Exchange building and not easily visible to newcomers, Hovey residents are lured to it by word of mouth and the secret of their success; irresistible food and great ‘family-style’ IN THE ZONE

customer service. Once a customer experiences the good food and friendly atmosphere found at the Bowling Center Snack Bar, they’re hooked, and it will take more than long lines to keep them away. “Overall sales at the Bowling Center have increased by 30% over the last two years. Considering how small the place is, this is a huge number,” says Rene De Jesus, Camp Hovey Bowling Center manager. “Our growth owes its success to the Snack Bar operation,” De Jesus said during a recent interview with In the Zone magazine. “Our most popular meals are the Hovey Burger and Average Joe; especially, the Hovey Burger. It’s made with a one pound home-made beef patty that’s become a favorite among Soldiers,” describes the long time food service business veteran.
The Hovey: One pound of ground beef, special herbs and spices, bacon and American cheese served on a lightly grilled Kaiser roll with lettuce, tomato, onion and a pickle spear. Average Joe: One third pound of ground beef served on a lightly grilled Kaiser roll with Lettuce, tomato, onion and a pickle spear. 32

“The lunch hour is by far our busiest time during weekdays. Not only do people come for their favorite burgers, but they also take advantage of the “Uniform Bowl Free” program that we offer from Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,” DeJesus continues. “With the recent relocation of the Warrior Readiness Center (WRC) to Camp Hovey, we now have a lot more Soldiers on our installation, and that means more potential customers. Many stop by and ask for “the Hovey. It’s very popular,” De Jesus says. Newcomers tend to ask around camp about what’s available for them to do, what they should try and where they can get good food while they’re stationed at the remote installation located behind Camp Casey.
Choe Blevins
Myong Cross
“The Hovey is a ‘must try’ item for new Soldiers, no question about it,” says a smiling Myong Cross, one of the friendly, experienced employees who give the bowling center that down-home feeling Soldiers feel comfortable with.
“The Hovey is our pride!” exclaims Choe Blevins, a long-time working partner with Cross and her best friend. “The Hovey is a really good homemade burger from inside out, from the buns to our own large ground beef patty. We knead the flour dough and bake our hamburger buns so they are fresh as possible. Our Kaiser rolls are lightly grilled to make them buttery, yet crispy. Soldiers just love ‘em,” Blevins reveals, explaining one of their secrets of the freshest and best burgers in town. But the true secret of their popularity and their ability to attract and keep long lines of customers isn’t only about the great food. It’s an attitude of excellence in every way. Every employee has that strong ‘can do’ attitude that goes well beyond customer’s expectations. “I come here because of Ginna (Cross) and Choe’s bubbly personality. They’re very nice people. Not only them, but John, Ms. Cho, Ms. Song and Ms. Lee. They’re a very friendly group, but Ginna and Choe

stand out,” says SSG Tronia Cannon, HHC 1BCT. “I stop here for lunch and dinner or just to hang out and chat with the staff. My friends and I come here for birthday parties. We come here when Ginna(Cross) and Choe have the late night shift!” Cannon says, concluding that’s the reason she averages five visits a week. “I come here 3-4 times a week because of the outstanding customer service. It’s just the best! I know everyone here by name. My favorite IN THE ZONE

to walk out of here with a satisfied smile. That’s why I work here every day. I do what I can to make them happy,” says Blevins, who is passionate about her work. As a token of appreciation to customers, the Camp Hovey Bowling Center offers a special monthly drawing program that gives away a free lunch to the lucky winner for an entire month. “The Hovey Bowling Center is amazing. My husband and I go there for food and sometimes we bowl and of course we love their food! Average Joe is my favorite and the Hovey is amazing. The best burger that I’ve had in Area I,” says SPC Ali Cooley, AFN Casey, who was the winner of the monthly drawing last month.

READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline
for the games, music and movies of his own 1970s and ‘80s childhood. Solving the puzzle will net the winner the unimaginable prize of inheriting Halliday’s own zilliondollar estate and control of the OASIS itself. Of course, millions of players worldwide long to crack this glorious Easter egg, none more so than Wade Watts, a poor teen scraping by in an Oklahoma City trailer park. When he stumbles upon the first key, he’s an instant global celebrity. But now he’s locked in a high-stakes race against both friends and foes in a cutthroat competition that quickly proves to have deadly real-world consequences.

Dollars and $en$e
New Online Banking Dangers by David Uffington It’s been trickling out in the news: International thieves have been siphoning millions of dollars out of bank accounts all over the world using methods that haven’t been seen before. What’s different this time? First, the thefts are automated by a highly sophisticated process, and viruses are able to get around typical online security measures. Second, these thefts appear to be beyond the ability of banks’ security systems to handle. Now, more than ever, it’s important to be cautious when you do your banking online. If you don’t bank online, and never have, don’t start now. If you open an account or your bank wants to update your information and it asks for an email address, say that you don’t have one. That way you won’t expect to ever get email from the bank. If email does show up, it will be from a scammer who is hoping you’ll type in your personal information. If you have been routinely checking your balances online or doing any online banking, take extra precautions now. If anything at all

looks different on the screen (even if it has an explanation, such as “We have a new look!”), do not click any icons or type in any information. If you receive an email from your bank that includes a link, do not click. It might be a phishing email designed to intercept your information as you type it in. Your money can be transferred out while you’re sitting at the computer, with you none the wiser. If it’s necessary to access your account, type in the URL you usually use. Be careful where you wander on the Internet. Many sites are compromised and will automatically download a virus into your computer. Set your virus software to automatically update. If you have Java or Adobe Reader, keep them updated as well. Visit the website of your virussoftware manufacturer. In the past you’ve likely only gone to the site to get answers to problems, or to upgrade your software. Now you need to read the latest news about the online thefts and learn as much as you can about how to protect yourself.
