Thomas Jefferson’s Crème Brûlée: How A Founding Father And His Slave James Hemings Introduced French Cuisine To America by Thomas J. Craughwell
Reviewed by Larry Cox Thomas Jefferson was a complex man, and one of our most intriguing Founding Fathers. In addition to drafting the Declaration of Independence and serving as U.S. president, he was a political philosopher, gardener, naturalist and bibliophile. Lesser known, perhaps, is that he helped to redefine food in America by introducing and popularizing such dishes as French fries, pasta and even our quintessential comfort food, macaroni and cheese. Jefferson was a free thinker when it came to food. During the 18th century, when most American supper tables were laden with meats, Jefferson preferred
vegetables and served meat as a condiment or side dish. While many thought tomatoes were poisonous, he used them in many of his meals along with other homegrown fruits and vegetables. The big surprise in Thomas J. Craughwell’s fascinating new book, however, is a deal he struck in 1784 with one of his slaves, 19-year-old James Hemings, brother of Sally Hemings. According to Craughwell, the bargain was a simple one: If Hemings would accompany Jefferson to Paris and learn the art of French cooking, he would be granted his freedom. In a three-year apprenticeship, Hemings mastered not only French cuisine, but the language as well. While in France, Jefferson studied both agriculture and winemaking. When the two men returned to America, they brought with them Champagne, designs for pasta presses, seeds and, of course, the recipe for crème brûlée. What Jefferson learned abroad, he tried to share with his fellow Americans. His ambitions including seeing Arborio rice and olive groves flourish in South Carolina and producing our country’s first grand cru wines, at Monticello. A final thought: If you have a bottle of olive oil in your family pantry, you have Jefferson to partially thank. IN THE ZONE

Area I Families Cheering For‌
FRIENDSHIP, RESPECT and TOGETHERNESS
I
Story & photos by Soojin Atwater
t’s a great opportunity to live overseas; different arts and cultures, a variety of exotic food, foreign languages, diverse geography and more. The experience becomes more meaningful when families can share it together, which is a significant benefit for Area I community Family members. Ironically, however, trying to provide children the same opportunities in sports activities that they may have in the States can be challenging due to language or cultural barriers as parents try to sign up their children in local recreational or sports programs. USAG Red Cloud and Area I Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS), a part of the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department (FMWR), understands the situation that families living off-post face and make every effort to provide a variety of youth sports programs available on-post for all age groups. CYSS youth sports includes soccer, flag football, basketball cheerleading, baseball/ softball, swimming and more. Sports programs are available for ages from 3 to 18 years old depending on the sports programs available on each installation.

USAG-Red Cloud and Area I, Family and MWR Magazine
“Children’s sports education at CYSS begins as young as when the child is 6 months old. As soon as children have eye coordination they try to grab and play with balls. For Tony Nanes younger children, playing sports is a great eye-opening opportunity to experience and develop teamwork,” says Tony Nanes, USAG Red Cloud and Area I CYSS Sports & Fitness Director. “CYSS Youth Sports are core programs managed by the Army. They are worldwide. What we offer here in Korea is the same youth sports programs that are available to children in the States,” Nanes continues regarding the fundamentals of CYSS youth sports. “CYSS Youth Sports help our children build healthy habits in life; keeping themselves in physically good condition but also caring about others. Friendship, teamwork, commitment and pride…all of these values come together by participating in team sports,” states Nanes, who has 20 years of youth and sports director experience.
CYSS is currently looking for volunteer youth sports coaches for upcoming cheerleader and basketball programs. “You don’t need to be a professional sports player to become a youth sports coach,” confirms Nanes. “What is truly required is to understand children. The rest can be learned by attending the training that I offer,” as he explains how to register youth sports coaches in Area I. Nanes, as the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) Area I Chapter Director, provides all necessary training for youth sports programs to those who are passionate about teaching children. He also runs background checks and provides first aid classes, making sure volunteer coaches are properly registered with Army Community Service (ACS) to earn ‘on-thejob’ hours which adds to their documented work experience. The training usually takes 8 hours and, when completed, volunteer coaches are duly certified. “I’m also required to be re-certified every two years from NYSCA as the Chapter Director. Currently, 16 coaches are registered in Area I.

Anyone who’s interested in becoming a coach should contact me. I’ll be glad to set up a training schedule,” Nanes says during a recent interview with In the Zone magazine. “The Army community gave my family so much. I’m very grateful for that,” says Milorad Jovanov, a youth soccer and football coach in Area I. “I’d like to give back to the Milorad Jovanov community. Since my kids are on my teams, I can be with my family as well. It’s a wonderful way for me to spend free time,” smiles Jovanov, who has dedicated 3 years to the Area I community as a Youth Sports coach. “I have three children and I know what it means for them to get out of the house and play with friends. I’d like to teach them how to be good leaders and get along with other people. Camp Casey is a small community but it has a wonderfully diverse population with many cultural backgrounds from different countries. My children have opportunities to learn different ways of doing things while they meet new people during soccer or football practices,” says Jovanov, explaining the benefits of joining Area I Youth Sports programs. “Playing sports is all about having fun. It’s not about winning or losing weight,” concludes Jovanov. 46

“I think it’s extremely important for young children to play sports. When I was young sports was a part of my daily life and it helped me socially. I learned how to get along with others. There Dara Rackers is no ‘I’ in team sports. It’s all about team work. Sports teach our children values like respect, mutual support and friendship,” says Dara Rackers, who’s one of several active coaches registered in CYSS. Rackers believes that watching her children get excited while they play games is worthwhile for her to find time to get them involved in sports. “I think it’s important for young girls to have opportunities to play sports. It gives them a sense of empowerment when they can do the same thing that other kids do,” says Melissa Melissa Washington Washington, a mother of a 4 year old daughter. “I wanted her to have the opportunity to get acclimated by being part of a team, learn to work with other children and learn the basics of playing soccer,” explains Washington, who is a firm believer in volunteerism. “I’m currently involved in helping with the ACS

I also helped with the potluck party after last season’s T-Ball,” smiles Washington. “Children need something to do after school and playing sports keep them busy. Also they can get out of the house and meet new friends,” says Johnny Thornton, a coach and parent with CYSS youth Johnny Thornton sports. “I wanted my daughter to get exposed to other kids and develop a passion for sports,” says Pablo Degracia, a parent with a child in CYSS youth soccer last season. “My eight year old Pablo Degracia daughter, Lauren has been playing soccer, practicing gymnastics and learning basketball. Sports definitely has a positive influence in children’s lives, teaching them teamwork and providing something they can be proud Tracy Chaney of,” confirms Tracy Chaney,

6th Grade Home Alone Training The USAG Red Cloud and Area I Home Alone Supervision policy states that a youth shouldn’t be left unsupervised if they are not at least in the 6th grade. However, parents know each child/youth is different and some older children shouldn’t be left alone. Before leaving students in grades 6 and above at home alone, parents need to make sure that their youth is mature enough to be on their own. CYSS offers Home Alone Training to assist students in making the right decisions when at home alone. We provide guidance on basic safety rules and ways to handle various situations should they arise when no adult is present. By increasing their comfort level, it helps ensure that they have a positive experience. Reservation required. Please call Parent Central at 730-3628.
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Meetings Attend Parent Advisory Committee meetings to learn more about CYSS programs and share your ideas to improve programs for your child. Holiday Spending Survival Guide Are you crazy for the holidays, spending thousands of dollars on holiday gifts, lights, entertaining, food and decorations each year? If so, you’re not alone. Many Americans feel the sting of holiday spending well into the new year. If you love to celebrate the holidays but don’t love the financial pinch you experience afterward, there are several great tricks for giving and celebrating, without breaking the bank.
So when you’re out battling the holiday crowds and heading to social commitments with family and friends, consider your wallet and protect your budget with these simple tips: 1. Know your limit. Sit down and plan out your holiday budget before you head to the malls this year. Gifts, large or small, can really add up, leaving you with a hefty bill at the end of the season. Use a free Holiday Budget Calculator (http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/calculators/calculate/ yourHolidayBudget.php?calcCategory=family) to estimate how much you plan to spend on presents. Then keep track of your spending using a Gift Log (http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/calculators/ calculate/yourGiftLog.php?calcCategory=family). 2. Plan ahead. You’ve done your budget and you’re ready to tackle the crowds. Here are a few ways to save on shopping, whether online or in the stores: • Look for special “savings days” at your favorite retail stores. • Use coupons from your newspaper, online or in-store. • Take advantage of free shipping with online purchases. • Buy gifts throughout the year, not just during the peak season. 3. Trim your list. Do you really need to exchange gifts with everyone in your family? Consider cutting your list back this year. Or suggest giving a group gift to certain members of your family rather than individual gifts. Just because you had a long gift list last year doesn’t mean you need to repeat it this year. You may find that other members of your family love the idea. 4. Reduce your stress. The holiday season is stressful enough with demands from family and friends, not to mention social commitments for work or other groups. Try to plan ahead as much as possible, avoiding last-minute buys will impact your budget. Also remember to maintain your daily routines to keep stress levels low. If you usually take a walk or go to the gym every day, take the time to continue the habit during the hectic holiday months. 5. Enjoy the season. In the end, the holidays are all about enjoying friends and family. Staying focused on time with loved ones and other joys of the season can help you to keep stress in perspective. If you are hosting holiday parties at your home, use a Entertainment Planner (http://www. practicalmoneyskills.com/calculators/calculate/entertainmentPlanner.php?calcCategory=family) to plan for the costs. Rather than feeling obligated to host an event every year, suggest a rotation for who will host holiday gatherings. And remember that it’s much better to keep spending down and stick to your budget. It’s a great feeling to start off the new year on the right financial foot. This information is being brought to you from Practical Money Skills for Life.

Credit and Debt Myths and Truths
Truth: They’re allowed to call others to try to determine where you live and work and what your phone number is. Additionally, they can call you at work unless you notify them that you don’t want calls there.
by David Uffington There are a half-dozen myths about that can get consumers into trouble: Myth 1: It’s easy to fix bad credit. Truth: Negative information can stay on your credit report for as long as specified by the Fair Credit Reporting Act law. A simple delinquency on a credit card can stay on your credit report for a whopping seven years, and that starts 180 days after the account first becomes delinquent. A bankruptcy will stay on your credit report for 10 years. Myth 2: Bankruptcy gets rid of all your debts. Truth: Student loans, child support, alimony and any taxes you owe that are less than three years old are not discharged by bankruptcy. Additionally, not everyone is automatically approved for bankruptcy. Since 2005 you’ll have to pass a “means test” to see if you qualify for bankruptcy or will receive a repayment plan instead. Myth 3: A debt collector can’t contact other people, such as your neighbors or family.
Myth 4: A divorce decree will relieve you from your debts. Truth: Since the creditor didn’t have input about how the divorce settlement was written, they depend on the original contract to determine who pays what and when. No matter what the divorce decree says, if you don’t adhere to the terms of the original contract, the creditor can report you delinquent if you don’t pay. Myth 5: Creditors can’t change your interest rate. Truth: With just 45 days notice, a creditor can make significant changes to your account agreement, including raising your interest rate. This can happen if your credit score drops, even if you’ve continued to make payments correctly to that creditor. Myth 6: Once your car is repossessed, you don’t have to worry about it anymore. Truth: That depends whether there is a balance due after the car is sold at auction. If the car doesn’t sell for enough to clear the whole amount due, you are obligated for the balance. Before you sign up for credit, learn about your rights and obligations. Go online to credit.com for information on consumer credit. IN THE ZONE
