Ghosts of Manhattan By Douglas Brunt
Reviewed by Rose McAllister Croke
“Ghosts of Manhattan” marks the auspicious fiction debut of Douglas Brunt, an author who readily falls into the “one to watch” category. The book’s protagonist, Nick Farmer, is a married 35-year-old bond trader at the nowdefunct Bear Stearns. Set in 2005 against the rich — both literal and figurative — backdrop of Wall Street before the economic debacle of 2008, Nick is at a crossroads, both professionally and personally.
He has grown increasingly disenchanted with the lucrative profession that nets him a seven-figure salary, and his high-priced lifestyle of excess and extravagant entertaining has caused a sizable rift in his marriage. When a nerdy analyst approaches him with apocalyptic research that indicates Bear Stearns’ high-flying mortgage-backed securities trading is essentially unsustainable, Nick is faced with an ethical dilemma — the kind he has spent a lifetime avoiding. “Ghosts of Manhattan” is an eloquent story about the choices we make with our lives. From Nick’s relationships with his wife and those with whom he works to the golden handcuffs that keep him chained to his unfulfilling career, Nick struggles to find a way out of the unhappy situation in which he finds himself ... before it’s too late. “Ghosts of Manhattan” pulls back the curtain on Wall Street in the days before the financial collapse and gives an insider’s look at how it all came tumbling down. The novel is a riveting account of one man’s journey to save his marriage and essentially his soul, and how he struggles to act with common decency in spite of all the moral bankruptcy that surrounds him. Money-Saving Travel Tips by David Uffington The high cost of travel threatens to keep many people home over the holidays, but it’s possible to save money if you know some of the tricks. Go Banking Rates (GoBankingRates. com) has created a list of ways to cut the costs of travel. • Avoid the peak travel days — the days immediately before and after a holiday. Be flexible in your departure and return dates. • Plan your holiday trip for the “dead weeks” in , when there is less business travel. • Choose to fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday, as most people prefer to fly on days around the weekend. • Go by rail. Check Amtrak’s rates. You’re sure to save considerable money over the cost of a plane ticket, although your travel time will be longer. • If traveling with a number of people, don’t book the tickets all in one group. If there aren’t enough seats together, and some are in a higher price range, your whole group will be charged the higher price. • Don’t click that “buy” button too early or too late. Months in advance is too early, and last
minute typically costs extra. • For last-minute air travel, when the rates are generally the highest, check online late at night. That’s when fare sales are first posted. Staying up late with multiple browser screens open can save you big money. (Remember to keep refreshing the page so the newest information comes up.) • When you get to your destination, stay with friends or family, even if it’s only one night with the person who picks you up at the airport. The longer the stay, the more you save on lodging and meals. • No friends or family at your destination? Join that intrepid group of millions of domestic and international travelers who couch surf. Sign up at www. couchsurfing.org for hookups with people who live in your destination city. Not only do you get a place to sleep, but in many cases you’ll make a new friend who’ll give you the guided tour of the area and show you places you might not have seen as a mere tourist. Search National Geographic, Forbes and The New Yorker online to see what they have to say about this new means of affordable lodging. IN THE ZONE

Skating Around The Capital
Hours of Operation Sunday-Thursday 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Friday- Saturday & Korean Holiday 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Take advantage of the winter season in Korea and take the family ice skating. Many area parks and open squares are converted to ice rinks at this time of year, making for a perfect outing with family or friends. Although Korea has several excellent indoor skating rinks that are available year-round, there are many just as entertaining skating opportunities outdoors such as the very popular rink at the Seoul Plaza which is open to skaters of all levels. For only 1,000 won, you can enjoy a full hour of fun on ice with your family or friends. The fee includes skate rental and a helmet, just to be on the safe side. You can also get skating lessons here as well for a relatively small fee, depending on your skill level. If you’re a beginner, no problem. They can teach you how to get up and gliding along in no time at all. If you’re looking to learn how to do a variety of twists and twirls on ice, they have people who can make you shine on ice. How to get there? Just take the subway (exit 7) out of the Seoul City Hall Station, lines 1 and 2.

Hungry for some authentic Korean favorite food? You should try budaejigae. But not just any budaejigae, you need to try the famous Uijeongbu budaejigae which was first created some 50 years ago when U.S. Soldiers arrived in the country. Their favorite food items, such as ham, sausage and bacon, were included in a new delectable delight with Korean kinchi, some hot pepper paste, rice cake and vegetables boiled with a variety of spices and seasoning. You gotta try it. You can get this tasty dish with chewy noodles which is another way to enjoy the soup. So, how do you find this place? Easy. Take the subway or bus to the Uijeongbu Station and the crossroads near the police station in the middle of Uijeongbu Station and Ganeung Station. The street is on the left and you can find a signboard that reads, "The street of special Uijeongbu BudaeJjigae". Enjoy!
