DMZ The Joint Security Area (JSA) The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where the guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) officers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues until today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than thirty five armed guards can be present on each side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. All kinds of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.
DMZ Third Tunnel

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine
Saturdays, June 9 & 30
TOUR
Observation Post (OP) Dora As the northernmost observatory in South Korea, OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Song can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2 meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within an hour. The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so far, indicating North Korea’s desire to invade Seoul during that time.

Trip to Incheon: China Town and Wolmido Cruise Saturday, June 9 Yellow Sea Sightseeing:
China Town:
Wolmido Island is an island 1 km off the Incheon coast, but with the creation of a highway, it became a part of the mainland. The name “Wolmido” comes from the shape of the island, which resembles the tail of a half moon. Many people visit the island on the weekends because of its close proximity to Seoul and because of its numerous cafés and seafood restaurants that allow you to enjoy good food with a great view. For those wanting to get a taste of Korean culture, Culture Street starts with the Doodle Pillar and continues into the Meeting Square, Arts Square, Performance Square, Good Harvest Square and many others. These squares often have performers and artists willing to do quick sketches. For those looking for a thrill, Play Hill features several interesting rides. Cruises are also available every hour for a tour of the island.
Bukseong-dong China Town is the only China Town in Korea. The streets are lined with traditional Chinese restaurants and include cultural attractions, such as traditional Chinese gates (Paeru), Uiseongdang Chinese Temple/ Kung Fu Hall, Jungsan School for Children, a mural depicting the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and a statue of Confucius looking out to sea.

TICKLING THE IVORIES Children have fun learning to play the piano at CYSS
Story by Soojin Atwater
M
usic is an important part of children’s education. Mastering a musical instrument is an arduous endeavor but can be achieved through application of personal will and disciplined practice. For young children, learning a musical instrument is not just about mastering techniques, but should be more about having fun! Choosing the right instrument for your child may be perplexing, so why not look into piano lessons now being offered with the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I Community by the Child, School and Youth Services (CYSS)? While children learn how to play the piano, they also develop the ability to follow instructions, enhance small motor skills, socialize with peers,

learn patience and, most of all, discover the joy of playing and creating music. “I enjoy very much working with children. They are so energetic. Not only do I teach them techniques of how to play the piano, but Minhee Toney I also consider myself as a communication path for my students who’d like to talk and get things out,” says Minhee Toney, piano instructor at the CYSS. “Learning a musical instrument should be a fun activity for kids. Learning and playing the piano shouldn’t be dull, repetitious finger movements over and over, one after the other with no joy,” says IN THE ZONE

Toney, a veteran with 12 years of educating children, explaining what it should mean for children when they are learning piano. “I start my lessons by asking each child how their day was. Some walk into the door with a big smile on their happy face, but not every child is the same. Their attitude and moods may be a result of what happened at school, home or even if they are not pleased with having to take piano lessons on that particular day.” Toney opens a conversational path with students so they feel comfortable when they come for their lesson. “I notice children participate in practice with more enthusiasm when they know I care for them. It’s important that time with me on the keyboard is fun for kids. Then, picking up the pace of their lessons comes naturally and effortlessly,” Toney says as she shares her belief about how children’s education should be. Toney started teaching piano when she was 19 years old but discovered her passion for music three years earlier when she joined a rock band performing rock and heavy metal music. She majored in keyboard at Praise Art Theological Seminary from 2000-2002. Currently, she’s not only a full time piano teacher at the CYSS, but she also volunteers her musical talent as a pianist at the Camp Casey Memorial Chapel. According to Toney, the recommended starting age to learn piano is when a child is able to distinguish alphabet letters, since recognizing each letter is required in order to learn piano notes. “Currently, we have a total of 8 students enrolled, and their ages are from 4 – 13 years. Most of them
are beginners but we also have a few intermediate level students,” says Toney. Last month all of the little musicians from Toney’s class had a chance to perform their musical talent at a recital at the Camp Casey Gateway Club. The small family-oriented recital turned out to be a great family event where parents and children bonded together with music. “Joanne is five years old, and she’s been taking piano lessons for about five months now. She is doing well and enjoys the lessons. Ms. Toney is a great teacher. Joanne and I were a little nervous, but I told her to just have fun!” says proud mother, Amanda Amanda Landrum & Landrum. Joanne Landrum During the recital, each player was spotlighted with love and courage from families and friends while they performed three different songs. As they heard applause and cheers from the audience, there was no doubt that each child walked off the stage with a deep sense of pride, confidence and accomplishment.
The Walsh Family
“Dylan came from a family of musicians. He plays guitar, and he’s been learning piano for almost 8 months. I want him to enjoy learning piano. Recently, we bought him an electronic keyboard for him to practice at home. His 30 minute practice sessions teach him discipline,” says Kathleen Walsh, mother of this musically talented 4th grader. “He also is enrolled in another CYSS program, Hapkido. The CYSS helps and enriches children’s talents and encourages them to seek more of their interests. I am very excited and nervous tonight, but most of all, I am very proud of him!” exclaims Walsh.

The Chamberlain Family
During the recital, 12-year-old Skylar Moore surprised the audience by singing while playing the piano. “I’ve been practicing piano for the last 4 years, but since I’ve been taking lessons from Ms. Toney, I became much better. If I find Skylar Moore a song I like, I can now perform it on the piano,” says Skylar, a soon-tobe song writer.
Andrew Chamberlain & Minhee Toney
“Piano lessons are a phenomenal program for my son. He loves playing piano. He doesn’t necessarily enjoy practicing it, though,” smiles Mandy Chamberlain, Andrew’s mother, who pointed out that her son was one of youngest performers at the recital. “We look at the IN THE ZONE magazine every month. Not just programs that our children can take now, but we look forward to having these classes when they get older. We love the SAT and Baby Sitter programs that CYSS offers. We look forward to having these classes availabe when they get older,” 44

Patricia Garcia
CYSS staff members pay attention to what parents would like for their kids, according to Patricia Garcia, Instructional Program Specialist at SKIES UNLIMITED. Garcia recalls how she began to offer the piano lessons in the
community. “We received increased inquires about piano lessons. I searched for qualified instructors both in and out of the military community. Ms. Toney plays for one of the post chapels, speaks English and has a
background working with children. We are thrilled to have her with us!” exclaims Garcia. CYSS offers a variety of children’s classes in addition to piano lessons, including drama lessons, SAT Intensive Prep, Taekwondo, Hapkido and arts & music classes for toddlers. However, the piano lessons are the only program of instruction-based one-on-one sessions. The individually-focused lessons target each child’s need compared to off-post piano lessons, where the instructor to student ratio is anywhere between one to 10 per session. Garcia says parents should take advantage of this great opportunity for their young kids. CYSS Individual Piano Lessons are offered at the Camp Casey School Age Center, building 2475 Tuesdays through Thursdays from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. and Camp Red Cloud School Age Center, building S3 on Mondays or Fridays from 4 – 5:30 p.m. The fee is $60 per month and open to children ages from 4 through 18. Sessions include four half-hour lessons on a first
come, first served basis. Parents can sign up their children at both Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud School Age Centers. For more information, call 730-6523 or 732-9141. Z

I’ll Walk Alone By Mary Higgins Clark
Reviewed by Rose M. Croke There is good reason why Mary Higgins Clark is called “America’s Queen of Suspense.” In “I’ll Walk Alone,” now available in paperback, Higgins Clark delivers yet another suspense- filled whodunit — her 30th in a long, illustrious career as one of America’s most beloved and prolific suspense writers. The novel’s protagonist is Alexandra “Zan” Moreland, a gifted interior designer who is haunted by the kidnapping of her 3-year-old son from Central Park. On what would be Matthew’s fifth birthday, photos surface in the media that implicate her in her only son’s mysterious disappearance. To add to her misery, a stranger
has stolen her identity and is impersonating her. Zan’s fledging design business is threatened as her bank accounts are cleaned out and charges to her credit cards mount. Under surveillance by the media and enduring the relentless scrutiny of the police and her bitter ex-husband, Zan begins to have panic attacks and blackouts that further discredit her sanity. With the help of Alvirah Meehan, an amateur sleuth and one of Higgins Clark’s most beloved recurring characters, Zan sets out to clear her name and find the person(s) behind this elaborate scheme. She focuses her blame squarely on Bartley Longe, her one-time mentor and now vindictive business rival. With her reputation in tatters and overwhelming circumstantial evidence against her, Zan embarks on a mission to prove her innocence and find her son. The story moves along at a fastclip as Zan pieces together who is trying to destroy her and how it all ties in to the fateful day her son went missing. As the pieces fall into place, Higgins Clark delivers her trademark fast-paced, race-against-time conclusion that never fails to entertain. A classic page turner, “I’ll Walk Alone” is a timely cautionary tale about identity theft expertly woven into a torn-from-the-headlines story about a missing child and a mother’s endurance under the glaring hot lamp of suspicion. Dollars and $en$e
is
Coupon Clipping Worth the Effort?
by David Uffington Clipping coupons can shave dollars off your grocery bill. While it might see like more trouble than it’s worth, you can save serious money if you develop a plan and stick to it. Start by checking the Sunday newspaper each week. Add up the value of the coupons you’ll actually use and determine if it’s worthwhile buying additional newspapers just for the ads. If products you regularly use have coupons, take that as an opportunity to stock up. Many stores run sales at the same time that coupons appear in newspapers, increasing your savings. If you have a computer and a printer, a whole world of potential savings opens up, as there are dozens of websites devoted to couponing. As a starting point on the Internet, check these websites to see if they appeal to you: www.coupons. com (click on Deals by State), www.dealseekingmom. com, www.redplum. com and www.fatwallet. com. Many sites insist that you sign up with an email address, so create a separate email account just for couponing. You might need to sign up for a weekly or monthly newsletter that will include printable coupons. In other cases, once you sign in, you’ll be 66
Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine
able to print coupons immediately. Some ask for your ZIP code so the coupons can be targeted to stores in your area. Set a goal for your couponing. Do you just want to shave dollars off your weekly grocery bill? Do you want to concentrate only on the high-dollar items in your grocery bill, such as diapers or pet food? Will you use the extra cash for family fun, or put the money in a savings account, or use it to pay off credit-card debt? Knowing what your specific goals are can help you stay consistent. Unless you find over time that you’re extremely serious about saving money with coupons, don’t fall for the DVD workshops and CDs that will teach you how to clip coupons. You’ll net plenty of savings with a modest effort that doesn’t cost you anything. If you save $5 a week, that’s $5 that stays in your wallet. To decide if couponing is for you, spend an hour a few days a week searching online for coupons and clipping them from the newspaper. Try it for three weeks. Then add up your savings. Decide if a regular effort is a potentially significant money saver for you.

PCS: The Right tools for Smooth Move e-Sponsorship is another way to help you get through your PCS For many, it’s time for their PCS move, and for others, it’s time to sponsor someone arriving. For Units, it’s time to train Sponsors to be better prepared to make that first (and lasting) impression on incoming personnel and their Families. The Department of Defense (DOD) developed new and better tools to assist Soldiers during this transition. Launched in 2007, Military Homefront is proving to be the best relocation tool for all Active Duty military, civilians, contractors and their Families. All U.S. military installations are now listed on one website, making it both efficient and helpful. ESponsorship is also a new resource listed under Military Homefront.
Two essential tools everyone needs to know how to use:
1. Plan My Move
2. eSponsorship
www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil Electronic Calendar
http://apps.mhf.dod.mil/ESAT
• D irect email capability to each agency at each military installation worldwide • Community profiles, crime statistics, school report cards, neighborhood demographics, cost of living comparisons, etc… • Consolidated phone directories of both departing and gaining installations • Tracking/accountability on your electronic inquiries/emails • Accessible from work, home and any other location. Also MAC friendly.
• 1 st DOD Joint Relocation/ Sponsorship Tool implemented • O ne stop, joint-minded training resource for all military branches • T racking capabilities by military branch unit and individual • F ully implements the Total Army Sponsorship Program, AR 600-8-8 • Q uick, easy training covering pre arrival, arrival and post arrival sponsorship • E lectronic products, Commander’s Welcome Letter, reminders, etc…
The ACS Relocation Readiness Program (RRP) offers both Homefront and eSponsorship training. For more information, or to schedule training classes for your unit, call 730-6612/3107.
