한국말 할 수 있습니까? Do You speak Korean? Photos and story by Shantall Cummins To the average American Soldier and their families, Korean culture can be very intimidating. The language is completely different from English and the writing appears to resemble circles and squares at first glance. But there is no need to be afraid of immersing yourself into the culture. FMWR offers free language classes to help bridge the gap between our culture and the Korean culture. Prospective Casey CAC Korean language class students slowly began trickling into a neatly arranged classroom filled with rows of white tables and chairs for the first class. Upon walking in, students were afforded an opportunity to purchase a Korean language

32

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

workbook for a small fee; this was optional, of course, but highly recommended. Eager to understand a world outside of English, students introduced themselves to the woman who would help them on their journey, Ms. Lee, Kyung Sun. Dressed in black and red and armed with a pointing stick, Lee, who has been teaching Korean language classes across the peninsula for three years, currently teaches at three locations; the Foreigner Worker Center, the Multi Cultural Family Center and of course, the Casey CAC. “I used to volunteer as a tour guide for the Dongducheon City Tour program which is sponsored by the city of Dongducheon and the Casey CAC,” says Lee. “My educational background as a teacher was

discovered and I was asked to become the Korean Class instructor here at the Casey CAC.” Class soon began and, with the help of a translator, Lee began explaining the basic rules for the three-month course. Students must complete at least 75 percent of the course in order to receive a certificate of completion. Students also need to score an average grade of “C” or higher in order to graduate. At the end of the course, students are treated to a party in celebration of their great accomplishment. Although the class is free, students are receiving a college-quality education. “If Soldiers were to take a class like this from a Korean college, they would expect to pay anywhere from 1.5 to 2 million won for a three-month-long course,” explains Lee.

33

Once the rules were laid out and expectations made clear, the translator left with a big smile on his face as he confessed, “No more English.” Lee promptly began explaining the Korean alphabet, or Hangul. “Giyeok, Nieun, Digeut. Giyeok, Nieun, Digeut.” One by one, each letter was carefully explained and repeated until proper pronunciation was achieved. “To become fluent in Korean, you need to work on pronunciation,” she says, “Especially when the family has a multi-cultural background.” Lee finally made students feel comfortable saying Korean consonants and vowels aloud. Inhibitions slowly faded away as the students realized that learning Korean is possible after all. “It’s exactly what I wanted to get,” says Brigadier General Taylor, Assistant Division Commander for Maneuver, 2d Infantry Division. “I wanted to immerse myself and make sure that I understood more than just having someone repeat the language to me. So this is fantastic.” At the end of this course in June, students should be able to master very basic conversational Korean, but it is critical that people stick with the entire class 34

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

schedule. There are no shortcuts. “I really hope students stay until the end of the class,” comments Lee. The long journey will be well worth it when students get to show off their new Korean language skills to friends and family. At the end of the class, the mood in the room had turned from skepticism to confidence. “I haven’t taken Korean classes before, but I thought it was really good and was really presented well. I learned a lot for a first-timer. I would definitely recommend it to other Soldiers. I mean, if they’re going to be here for any length of time they might as well,” says 2LT Mike Fahlman from Camp Casey. Mother-daughter team Lauren and Anya Jackson, both civilian dependents, thought it was a great experience. “It was great; amazing. I think it’s going to be fun. I signed up the whole family and they’ll all be here next class,” says Anya, “I would absolutely

recommend it to others. If you’re going to be here, you need to mingle and you need to try to speak the language and be part of the culture. The teacher is amazing.” SFC Gregory Veals, Echo Company, 652 AMD explains, “I like the teacher. She uses Korean in the class too. You have to listen to her to try to understand what she’s saying, but it makes it a whole lot easier to understand what’s going on in the class.” “I thought Korean was really tough, but I’m starting to hear the sounds and understand them. I really liked it,” Says Genie Forbes of Camp Casey. Several American teachers were in the class in an effort to fully take in what the Korean culture has to offer. “It was really good. I liked that she kept going over the alphabet and was very patient. I would definitely recommend this to everyone else,” says, Sharon Mellon, a teacher at Camp Casey.

Families are encouraged to sign up together to make it a family event. Anyone from civilian to private and all the way up to general can take advantage of this high-quality free class. “Soldiers and their families have to jump in. They have to take the risk. They will enjoy it immensely,” says General Taylor. By the end of the class, Lee has not only shown students how to do basic things like order food or say hello to others, but she brings several families from all over the world together into one multilingual family. “I believe that as a teacher, it is important to treat each student as if they were my own children and I do my very best to make them feel that way,” concludes Lee. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 -7:30 p.m. Upon completion of this three-month course, students have the option to move on to intermediate and advanced classes. For more information or to sign up for this free class, call the Casey Community Activity center at 730-4601.

Practicing postures, breathing exercises and awareness makes you healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, shape up - all at the same time. For many people, that's enough of an answer. But there's more if you're interested.

Wednesdays (April 6 – June 22) 5:30 p.m.

For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. What's more, yoga: improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina, reduces stress and tension, boosts self esteem, improves concentration and creativity, helps with weight loss, improves circulation, stimulates the immune system and creates sense of well being and calmness. To find out more about yoga, visit the Casey CAC and join the Wednesday class taught by a certified and registered hatha yoga teacher. Dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat, towel, bottled water and most importantly, an open mind. *Important: Please don't eat at least one hour prior to class.

April is

Child Abuse Prevention Month

Prevention is the best hope for reducing child abuse and neglect and improving the lives of children and families. Strengthening families and preventing child abuse requires a shared commitment of individuals and organizations in every community. The theme for Area I is “Child Abuse Prevention, Strengthening Families and Communities.”

What is Child Abuse Prevention? The term “prevention” is typically used to represent activities that stop an action or behavior. It can also be used to represent activities that promote a positive action or behavior. Research has found that successful child abuse interventions must both reduce risk factors and promote protective factors to ensure the well-being of children and families. Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families. They are attributes that serve as buffers, helping parents who might otherwise be at risk of abusing their children to find resources, support or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively, even under stress. 56

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine

Why is child abuse prevention important? The impact of child maltreatment can be profound. Research shows that child maltreatment is associated with adverse health and mental health outcomes in children and families, and those negative effects can last a lifetime. In addition to the impact on the child, child abuse and neglect affect various systems – including physical and mental health, law enforcement, judicial and public social services, and nonprofit agencies as they respond to the incident and support the victims. One analysis of the immediate and long-term economic impact of child abuse and neglect suggests that child maltreatment costs the nation as much as $258 million each day, or approximately $94 billion each year. Successful family strengthening initiatives involve community leaders, agencies, and families working together to make lasting improvements to the community’s infrastructure. Every community member can help prevent child abuse. Anything we do to strengthen and support families in our community helps reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. This month and throughout the year, let’s focus our attention on prevention efforts that support parents and create healthier communities for children. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Get to know your neighbors. Problems seem less overwhelming when support is nearby.

Help a family under stress. Offer to babysit, help with chores and errands, or suggest resources in the community that can help. Reach out to children in your community. A smile or a word of encouragement can mean a lot, whether it comes from a parent or a passing stranger.

Be an active community member. Lend a hand at local schools, community or faith-based organizations, children’s hospitals, social service agencies or other places where families and children are supported.

Keep your neighborhood safe. Start a neighborhood watch or plan a local “National Night Out” community event. You will get to know your neighbors while helping to keep your neighborhood and children safe.

Learn how to recognize and report signs of child abuse and neglect. Reporting your concerns may protect a child and get help for a family who needs it. For more information or to get involved, visit your Area I Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program or call 730-3150. Join us in our prevention efforts during April, Child Abuse Prevention Month.

“Hurts One, Affects All” Preventing Sexual Assault is Everyone’s Business

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The “Hurts One, Affects All” theme for this year’s observances is intended to remind us that we all pay a price when any member of our military community is a victim of a sexual assault and that we all must be actively involved in the effort to eliminate sexual assaults from our community. In an address that helped launch the I.A.M. Strong Campaign, U.S. Army Chief of Staff GEN George W. Casey, Jr. said, “Soldiers must know that respecting and protecting the dignity of others is the cornerstone of our institution and that preventing sexual assault and speaking up are the right things to do.” I.A.M. Strong highlights the critical importance of speaking up under the headings of Intervention, Action and Motivation. High risk situations are not hard to identify; intoxication, inappropriate sexual comments and other forms of harassment, fraternization and failure to observe visitation and barracks policies are among the most common contributing factors here. We have all been exposed to training, awareness campaigns and other prevention measures to know that senior leadership has made eliminating sexual assaults from the life of the Army a high priority and that anyone who commits a sexual assault is engaging in criminal behavior that can have life-long repercussions. These messages are seen and heard quite often. Unfortunately, classes, posters, and verbal condemnations and declarations alone will not eliminate acts of sexual violence. There is a world of difference between a Soldier who, when seeing a high risk situation, thinks “there’s trouble about to happen” and then goes about their business, and the Soldier who sees the same situation says “no, that is wrong” and then makes it their business to do something about it. As we observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout April take time to consider how you will turn the slogan, “Hurts One, Affects All: Preventing Sexual Assault is Everyone’s Business” into a personal attitude that will make you a part of the solution. Report assault incidents and encourage victims to seek assistance by calling the 24-hour Sexual Assault Hotline at DSN 158 or from any phone by calling 0505-764-5700.

Trying Austerity On for Size If you’re one of the lucky ones who’ve managed to move through the current economic crisis unscathed, your outlook is no doubt brighter than those who have been hit hard by layoffs, foreclosures and more. This is not the time to relax about the economy and your personal finances, however — because the problems are not over. Whatever you have in savings for a rainy day or emergency, double it. Aim for a minimum of nine months of living expenses that you can get your hands on quickly, which means savings or moneymarket accounts. Do a bare-bones budget and see what it looks like. Consider various options. In one you might subtract only the daily cappuccino from your expenses. In another not only do you stop getting cappuccino but you also cancel your book-club membership and decide to wear last year’s winter coat. Perhaps you decide to go all the way and stop eating at restaurants, having carryout delivered and buying prime cuts at the butcher. Even if you’re doing well so far in this ragged economy, you owe it to yourself to see what an austerity budget really looks like. If you’ve never used coupons or paid attention to sales flyers in the newspaper, start now. Spend more time saving

ACS

money. Pay down debt. While new laws have been passed to restrict the creditcard companies, creditcard debt still comes with a price tag in the form of interest and fees. Spend your money on necessities that have a future value, like vehicle tires. Decide if you really need a new television, or if you just want it. Consider what you would do for income should you lose your job. Find out how much unemployment benefits would be in your area and how long you’d get them. Calculate how much of your current bills you actually could pay each month. Add in your savings and re-do the math: How long could you survive on a lower budget? Vow to spend only on necessities for one month to see what it feels like. If you need encouragement to take some austerity steps, attend a job fair and talk to job seekers. Because it really isn’t over.

Financial Readiness Program courses are available. See page 52 for more information.

Sinatra: Hollywood His Way by Tim Knight

Reviewed by Larry Cox I though it’s been more than a decade since the death of Frank Sinatra, he is still very much a part of our American culture. Several new biographies have been published, his recordings sell well, and an entire satellite station is devoted to his music. In his new book, film critic Tim Knight documents the 59 films in which Sinatra appeared, beginning with RKO’s “Higher and Higher” from 1943, and ending with his final credit, “Listen Up! The Lives of Quincy Jones,” released by Warner Brothers in 1991. Knight’s book covers each film with reviews, behindthescene stories and hundreds of rare color and black-and-white photographs, making this the ultimate guide to the films of Frank Sinatra. This coffee-table-size book is divided into four basic parts: “Frankie’s Rise and Fall, 1941-1952”; “The Crooner Comes Back, 1953-1959”; “The Rat Pack Years, 1960-1964”; and “Sinatra’s Hollywood Twilight, 1965-1991.” Sinatra made several memorable movies, including “From Here to Eternity,” which marked his 1953 comeback, and perhaps his best movie performance, John Frankenheimer’s gritty 1962 classic “The Manchurian Candidate.” It’s Sinatra’s flops, however, that make this book so intriguing. For example, one has to wonder why he agreed to get involved in such monumental misfires as “The Devil at Four O’Clock,” “The Naked Runner” and “None But the Brave,” which he also directed. The fact that he took such chances is why he remains such an interesting entertainer. Sinatra never played it safe. Knight has researched his subject

Army Emergency Management HQDA G-3/5/7

well and sets the record straight. For example, despite rumors to the contrary, Sinatra did not pull “The Manchurian Candidate” from circulation due to political concerns, and it was never a “lost” film. Today, nearly 50 years after its premiere, the movie is regarded as a masterpiece. Time has not diminished either its power or relevance, and the same might be said for Frank Sinatra.
