From the Editor... This New Year edition of your U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud Family & Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR) In The Zone magazine includes some new, interesting and fun features for your enjoyment. Rest assured we will continue to bring you all the information you need about the many fine USAG Red Cloud FMWR facilities, activities and events to meet your recreational needs. Beginning with this edition, we’ve included a variety of games, quizzes and puzzles for your enjoyment. Inside you will find the Warrior Crossword Puzzle and Magic Maze on page 29. Sports fans will enjoy the Sports Quiz on page 13, designed to challenge even the most die-hard sports fan. Children of all ages will find a tricky Connect-the-Dots Puzzle on page 28 and adults will find an interesting and informative financial column, Dollars and $en$e, on page 50, covering topics such as how to avoid scams plus some great tips you can use to track your spending habits to better manage family finances. For the book worms out there, check out the new Book Review Column on page 63. This month we’re featuring the new book Bloody Crimes, an exciting account that follows the journey of Jefferson Davis following the fall of the Confederacy. History buffs will love it. Also in this issue you’ll enjoy a riveting first-hand account of one of our recent FMWR tours to awesome Buljoeng Recreation Forest by our own Shantall Cummins. After reading the article and seeing her superb photos, you’ll want to ‘Zip’ on over to your nearest Community Activities Center to ask them to schedule another tour to Buljoeng Recreation Forest. Your USAG Red Cloud FMWR team works hard to make this magazine the best source of information for Area I FMWR activities. We hope you enjoy our newest additions.

Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine
Photos and story by Shantall Cummins The Buljeong Recreational Forest was lush and full of fall colors as FMWR Zip Line tourists prepared to take their first jump into thrilling rides throughout nine exhilarating courses. Some participants showed frazzled nerves at first, while others rushed to be first in line. All, however, were anxious and ready for an exciting day filled with adventure and the chance to do what others dare not. After arriving at the Zip Line Adventure Camp in Buljeong, participants checked in and split into two groups for safety orientations before receiving their equipment. The upbeat and helpful Korean staff were available every step of the way to ensure participants were wearing their harnesses and equipment properly. Once the rules were explained, the two groups were hauled up the mountain to begin their first zip through course number one. Loaded and strapped into open-air trucks with seats lined in parallel rows facing each other, participants hung on for an exciting ride as the truck raced up to the top of the mountain on the unpaved, rocky road. Cameras clicked away on the way to the first course so thrill-seekers would remember the journey that had just begun. Gripping laughter and giggles could be heard from FMWR tourists as the truck passed by families hiking up the mountain and groups zipping down to the bottom.

Next, Zip Line guides informed the group that course four, 347 feet long, was to be done backwards. Participants were instructed to run off the platform backwards and jump into what seemed like the vast unknown below. After the group made it to the other side, everyone was enthusiastic about other challenges they would face up ahead. Course five, the Challenge Tower Course, is only 269 feet long, the shortest course on the mountain. It’s also one of the most exciting. To their surprise, tourists were handed one metal dart each before being strapped onto the line, with instructions to throw the dart at a large metal dart board with images of common farm animals at the end of the line while still moving on the zip line. The task proved to be much more difficult than anticipated. More laughter could be heard as, one by one, darts were thrown in turn. All failed to hit the mark, except for one. Liners could write messages to leave behind. Several FMWR tourists wrote fun messages dedicated to friends, family or whoever might read them. Lying ahead was the longest course yet, the Super Flying Course. At 659 feet long, this course proved to be a challenge for some participants. They were asked to daringly let their hands drop behind them, resting comfortably behind their heads, and to lie completely back while looking courageously towards the sky, relying on the harness alone to get them across safely. The chipper Zip Line Adventure guides demonstrated for the group how easy it was to do. Fear soon dwindled away and participants had no problem accepting this very worthy challenge, feeling as if they were flying across the sky without a care in the world. “This was a perfect way to spend a Sunday, remarked PFC Ambar Quintero of Echo Company, 6/52 ADA. Then came the most challenging and rewarding course yet, the 1,181-foot long Super Flying Course 2. The longest course on the mountain is nestled high above one of the largest valleys in the mountain range, where tourists experience a ride like no other. The awe-inspiring course allowed participants to truly feel as free as a bird flying over the stunning fall landscape below. Since this was IN THE ZONE

the longest course, participants had enough time to truly take in the sight and record or take pictures of the breath-taking vista. “We loved it,” exclaimed Brook and Michael Brown. “I would recommend others to take this tour,” said Brook. FMWR participants beamed with joy at the end of the Zip Line Course. Tourists finished the day with a beautiful walk through a portion of the forest that led to the main building. Once there, participants were guided through the equipment turn-in process, each receiving attentive and personalized service. The Zip Line Adventure crew that led the FMWR tourists through the whole experience awarded each participant with a certificate and membership card complete with their name on each one, commemorating the great experience they all had. “This was my first FMWR tour and I thought it was a lot of fun,” exclaimed PFC Carmen Quintana of Echo Company, 6/52 ADA, Camp Casey. “It was exciting. I would definitely recommend this to other Soldiers.” Friends SPC Alisa Lopez and Ambar Quintero of Echo Company, 6/52 ADA were excited to tell their friends all about their day with FMWR. “It was very fun,” said Lopez. “I would recommend this tour to others.” “I loved this tour, it was definitely worth the money,” says Quintero. “I would recommend this to others.” 2LT Michael Williams of Charlie Company, DSTB also had great things to say. “It was my first FMWR tour and it was great,” said Williams. “This was my second FMWR tour and I liked this tour the best,” said wife Janelle Williams. “I thought this tour was excellent. It was great,” commented SSG Vin Stevens, Camp Casey AFN. “I’m planning on brining my girlfriend over so we can both do this together.” Whether you’re a thrill seeker or the complete opposite, the FMWR Zip Line tour has something to offer everyone. Each course gradually builds up from easy to more challenging while encouraging everyone, 34

Casey Lanes Programs for
January 2011
Camp Casey Lanes will be hosting BOWLING SURVIVOR on January 8th, 15th, 22nd and 28th and the first two Saturdays of February. Participants will be divided into two or more teams between 5 and 8 people each to compete during the first two sessions. Teams will bowl various challenges for rewards to begin each day followed by a 15 minute strategy session. During this break the team that won the challenge will be enjoying their reward. That reward will usually be a snack bar related treat such as a cookie, soda, burger, etc. The second part of the session consists of the main task for the day. The winning team will be safe from the “Bowling Council” segment in which all of the losing teams will vote one of their members off their team. The second week session will be similar to the first week with the exception of the bowling events to be held. The format of each week’s bowling challenge will not be known to the contestants until the beginning of the event to limit the degree of preparation. Some events will be raw scores while others will have handicaps or other bonus tasks assigned to them. The third week session will be similar to the first two weeks of the event. Prior to the start of the fourth week’s session the teams will be disbanded and everyone will be on the same team. Individual bowler immunity will replace team immunity. The number of individuals voted out will vary depending on the number of remaining bowlers. If multiple bowlers are needed to be eliminated, one of them will be removed at the end of the session and one prior to the start of week five. This will allow individual bowlers on the elimination bubble to politic and bribe rival team mates to change their votes. Week five will be the pivotal week as the session will be the longest of the six. Multiple challenges may be held in order to reduce the field to five. Week six will be the final week. Various challenges will be conducted until the final three remain. There will be a 30 minute break called at this point. At the end of the 30 minutes, the bowler with the best overall finishing average over the 6 weeks will be the number one qualifier. He or she will then choose which of the remaining two will accompany that person to the FINAL COUNCIL. The FINAL COUNCIL will consist of the last 11 members that had been voted out of the event to include the individual that was booted by the event leader. During the final council, each of the 11 council players will have a few moments to question the final two bowlers prior to voting. The bowler with the largest amount of votes will be declared Bowling Survivor. Prizes will be given out from first to 5th place. Bowling Survivor requires pre registration of $25. This registration is a one-time fee and covers all bowling fees, shoe rental and food costs for the event. [Bryan, all other programs remain the same. Please remove Christmas program events.]

“It’s delicious. It’s a lot of food for a great price, and the best patty on post, even Area I. I haven’t had a better burger around here. The Hovey Burger is a pound of meat and really good. I recommended it to my friend, and he’s here all the time, too.”
PFC Marcus Davis HHT, 447 CAV “My friend recommended the Hovey Burger to me and I’ve been hooked ever since. I come here very often. I would say the Hovey Burger is mas-issda, which means delicious in Korean. I would recommend this to everyone.”

in personal-finance budget software. Nearly all of the finance programs have reports that you can customize and generate. Want to know how much you’re spending for groceries? Or how much miscellaneous cash went to coffee in the morning? The program will tell you. Your bank statement will include the debitcard amounts, which you’ll need to add in, but not the cash you spend. You’ll need to enter that as well. Be cautious about the features of any software you buy. There is one brand-name software that will accumulate all of your information in one place. Caveat: If you plan to use an Internet-connected computer for your finances, don’t download any personal-finance software from the Internet. You don’t know what’s in it. Instead, pick a name brand that comes in a box at the store. And when you enter your information into the program, don’t put your account number or even the real name of your bank. Best bet: Use an old computer for all your financial information — and don’t hook it up to the Internet. Test some of the free basic-software programs to see which you like best. BLOODY CRIMES
The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln’s Corpse by James Swanson (William Morrow, $27.99)
Reviewed by Larry Cox Bestselling author James Swanson gets as close to the subjects he writes about as possible. Much of his latest book, which documents the flight of Jefferson Davis following the fall of the Confederacy and the death of President Abraham Lincoln and its aftermath, was written in Ford Theatre and inside the Peterson house, where the president died. Swanson conveys a sense of immediacy, even when writing about events that happened almost 150 years ago, through total immersion. To capture to mood of that distant April in 1865, he sifted through newspapers, letters, journals, court records, photographs and anything else he could find to help define both the period and its people. “Blood Crimes” is actually two stories that unfolded that fateful month. One tracks Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, who realized all might be lost when Richmond fell to Union forces. He fled the city with trusted cabinet members and vital documents for Danville, Va., hoping he might be able to rally Confederate troops to continue the fight. That dream was abruptly dashed when Lee surrendered on April 9 at Appomattox. As Davis scrambled to find a safe haven, the nation mourned the death of Lincoln, and his funeral plans began. He was autopsied and embalmed in the White House guest room, and an elegant funeral train, named the United States, was outfitted for his eventual journey back to Springfield, Ill. Aboard the train, embalmer Dr. Charles Brown and undertaker Frank Sands worked steadily for 13 long days to keep at bay death’s relentless companion: decomposing flesh. This was no easy task during this era of no refrigeration. Swanson is a master storyteller who brings fresh perspectives and a deeper understanding of not just this turbulent period in American history, but also the legacy and legend of both Lincoln and Davis.
