Witness the Fitness with
JON
CALVO through walking and daily elliptical machine use, and over a period of 6months, I lost 40 pounds. During this time, I was also set on limiting my caloric intake and eating six small meals. After I dropped to 290 pounds I was introduced me to the Paleo Diet and CrossFit. I was now eating food high in protein, unsaturated fat, and low in carbohydrates. In the process, I began eating more fibrous vegetables, tree nuts, and natural foods. Although I would not keep up with CrossFit, the mentality and discipline would later help me in my journey. I reverted back to elliptical use and over the course of eight months I successfully lost 80 pounds, stabilized my cholesterol, normalized my blood sugar, and brought my triglycerides down to healthy levels!
M
y name is Jon Calvo. I am a 23-year-old full time student with UMUC Asia. I first moved to Seoul, Korea in 2003, and I have been a member of the USAG Yongsan community for about 9 years on-and-off. On May 2010 I began my journey to health and wellness at Trent Warrior Resiliency Fitness Center. I knew that at 330 pounds and 5'5", I had to make a change. Since then, I have lost over 130 pounds; going from 5XL shirts to a size large and losing 20-inches on my waist. To this day, I still hold on to my favorite shirt and size-56 shorts as a reminder of where I have been. I have experienced a lot of hardship in the past two and a half years. When I first began exercising, people were not kind. I was ridiculed regularly on and off base. There were times where random ignorant people call me a "fat kid" or "the fattest person they have ever seen." It was extremely disheartening, especially since these events happened within the first month of my journey. I felt like quitting, but I did not give up. To this day, I still do not know why, but I persevered against all adversity. If you find yourself susceptible to hurtful comments, a support system can keep you in a positive state of mind. It was something that kept me accountable and lifted my spirits on several occasions. I began a YouTube channel as a video diary where I discussed my success, failures, and frustrations. In the process, I received a lot of support from friends, family, and strangers alike. Seeing your progress whether written down, recorded on video, or through photos are a great way to stay motivated. Trust me. As you succeed, you will be happy you documented everything! There were a variety of methods I tried when losing weight. I tried a variety of diets and lifestyles in the past two years with varying success. All my methods had a few things in common. I drank lots of water, fish-oil and a multivitamin on a daily basis. When I first started, I did a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet accompanied with lean meat. The diet was complimented with lots of cardio

My second plateau was one that lasted an entire year. From August 2011 to August 2012, I also gained 20 pounds. Back at 230 pounds, I was unsure if I would ever get under 200. I resorted to expanding my horizons when it came to health and wellness. I spent the first two years of my weight loss journey neglecting weight training. I had an unnatural fear of building muscle, but I decided to give CrossFit another try around March of this year. For the next four months, I began working out harder than I ever have in my life, but nothing changed. The effectiveness of the Paleo Diet seemed to have waned as well. Not a single pound was shed no matter how hard I tried. On August 13, 2012, I began the next method of my journey. When I first began intermittent fasting (http://www.precisionnutrition.com/intermittentfasting). Essentially I was only eating around certain hours per day. I introduced carbohydrates back into my diet, I also traded in cardio, like running or biking, in favor of strength training with compound movements like squatting, benching, and dead-lifting. I have lost over 30 pounds in a little over two months; breaking my second plateau. I am also stronger than I have ever been. If you are thinking about beginning a journey to health and wellness for yourself, I do have a few words of advice. Know that there are times when you will fail, but that failure is one with your success. A weight loss journey is like riding horseback for a thousand miles. If you fall, do not revert back to where you started by turning your horse around. Instead, get back up and continue moving forward. Your conviction, perseverance, and self-discipline are your greatest allies. No matter what method you decide on, do not ever give up. Lastly, the most important piece of advice:
“It does not matter when, how, or why you decide to change. The only thing that matters is that you do. Take the time and acknowledge people or organizations that make a difference in our community. 20-21 January, Overnight Tour ne of the greatest benefits of living in Korea is being able to experience Mother Nature’s four seasons. From dreading hot summers to absurdly cold winters, Koreans have learned to make the best out of these seasons. Koreans have learned to enjoy the seasons as they come and by that, they always have something to do or something that’s considered popular to do during that time. This year, the Community Recreation Division (CRD) has planned to take an overnight trip to the beautiful city of Chuncheon and to the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival.
O G
angwon-do Province is located in the heart of the famous tourist city of Chuncheon. Since the city is very close to Seoul, it makes Chuncheon a popular destination to visit. The city is surrounded by water with Uiamho Lake to the west, Chuncheonho Lake and Soyangho Lake to the north and Sinyeongang River to the south. There are many places to visit and a ton of festivals that take place in Chuncheon but mostly, tourists go to Chuncheon to see the beautiful sceneries.
T
he Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is celebrated annually and there are plenty of activities to do for everyone of all ages. It is said that the first area to freeze in South Korea is Hwacheon, where the river’s ice reaches a solid 16 inches thick by January. These types of conditions are ideal for trout grabbing; Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival’s most popular attraction. As you choose the area you want to fish in, let enough line to get the bait to hit the bottom of the river. Once it hits the bottom, flick your wrist upwards to let it float back down to the bottom. This tactic has found to be one of the best to catch trout. Once you get your fishing fix in place, head over to the grilling station and for just a small fee, they will grill your fish for you. You can also get your fish done sashimi-style (raw).

Instead of just working out, why not train?
W
ith the new year just around the corner, gyms and fitness centers all over the country will be expecting to see a sharp increase in attendance as 2013 rolls in. New Year’s resolutions will be made regarding “getting back in shape”, as will promises and commitments to eat healthier and live a healthier lifestyle. Yes, people all over will swarm to their nearest gym with the full intent of carrying out their mission and remain dedicated to achieving their goals: until they lose motivation, become too busy, or find some other reason that has successfully halted them in their tracks in past years. Unfortunately for many people, the sad reality is that the yearly cycle of starting and stopping will repeat itself yet again for the same reason as last time: “ATTITUDE.”
Y
ou see, when the average Joe exercises, we call it “working out.” However, when an athlete exercises, we’re naturally inclined to call it “training.” What’s the difference if both individuals are doing the same exact exercises? The answer is quite simple: an athlete exercises with a sense of PURPOSE. Even if both individuals have the same goals (lose fat, increase performance, win competitions, etc.) an athlete will remain committed to the practice of consistency because he/ she will treat everyday as an opportunity to get better. Whether they are in the weight room, practicing their craft, or recovering from training, athletes understand the importance of being intentional with what they plan on doing for the day – and then they proceed to carry it out, even if they may not be in the “right mood.”
N
ow while it’s true that we may not all play for multi-million dollar contracts or be gifted with God-given athleticism and talent, that does not mean that we cannot approach our fitness goals with the same attitude as a pro-level athlete.
As a matter of fact, there is very little stopping you from achieving the same results as an athlete if you make the decision to train instead of just “working out.” For example:
WORKING OUT: Following a routine. TRAINING: Following a program - more often than not, the best way to get better is to do something that you’re not already used to doing. Routines may help encourage consistency but athletes plan their training sessions in advance with the expectation that they will adapt and improve. While it is true that certain systems and programs may be more effective than others, nothing kills passion for training more than boredom.
WORKING OUT: Cardio. TRAINING: Conditioning. - athletes train to improve their stamina and endurance. period. Fat loss, a boost in metabolism, and a good sweat are all merely by-products of that specific training effect. In other words, if your “cardio” workout does not systematically enhance your physical performance, it is most likely not helping you as well as you think.
WORKING OUT: The gym. TRAINING: The life. - What you do in the gym is certainly an integral part of training but it doesn’t have to be the only thing. Those who have an activity-based outlet are often far more motivated to exercise than those who do not. Dancing on the weekends, hiking in the mornings, pickup basketball with

the guys, snowboarding out on the slopes, or even a group exercise class – these are all activities that will not only motivate you to train but will also support your training! Remember, an athlete’s main priority is not to train for their respective sport. Rather, it is to WIN in their respective sport. It helps to be passionate about whatever it is you are training for.
WORKING OUT: Doing what everyone else is doing. TRAINING: Doing what you should be doing. - You enjoy eating foods you personally like. You buy clothes that are specific to your taste and size. Why on earth would you put your body through an exercise regimen that is not tailored to make YOU better?! Training smart is just as important (if not, more) as training hard. While there is no such thing as a perfect coach or a perfect program, that does not mean that you shouldn’t try to seek out the best possible way to improve based on what works for you.
E
arlier during my career, I remember one of my head coaches telling me, “Passion on fire is more effective than knowledge on ice.” While understanding how to accomplish your goals is one thing, it means very little if action is not taken. If accountability is a concern for you, USAGYongsan offers a wide variety of group exercise classes to help you get the ball rolling, along with personal training services offered by nationally certified trainers and strength coaches. WE ANSWER
THE CALL TO SERVE It is a characteristic trait. Steeped in our history is a calling to contribute, to serve, to lead. Troy University’s promise since 1887 has been to nurture that calling – to educate the mind to think, the heart to feel, and the body to act. We deliver on this promise in classrooms around the world, online, and on our home campuses in Alabama. If it is your calling to serve... to inspire and enrich others’ lives, this is your university.
