Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s strong leadership, unprecedented power of speech and moral compass changed the direction of an entire nation. His life was ended abruptly at the age of 39, but during his short-lived life, Dr. King was truly an American hero who pioneered the efforts to lead this Government back to its core values of the Constitution on which this nation was built. Although, he faced tribulations and hardships during his fight, Dr. King pressed forward in love for his fellow Americans in non-violent demonstrations to spread unity among all people. Dr. King was committed to ensure that all people are created equal became more than just a phrase written in the Constitution by our forefathers, but that all people created equal became an everyday way of life practiced by all citizens throughout this great nation. On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the early age of 31, inspired 200,000 followers from around the nation to gather at the capitol of the United States of America, where he delivered his unforgettable speech I Have a Dream. This event set a precedent for all citizens to once again take up Dr. King’s cause to fight for their equality. On Sunday, 15 January, the Republic of Korea Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Mu Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March and Observance Program. The community is invited to come out and participate in the candlelight March to celebrate, honor and highlight the noteworthy achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme this year is “Remembering the Dream.” At 1700 the community will gather to recreate a historical candlelight March to commemorate and reflect on the various civil rights marches organized and conducted by Dr. King himself. At the conclusion of the March there will be a celebration on the life and legacy of Dr. King at the Seoul American High School Auditorium approximately 1800. Please see flyers and posters for the gathering location which will be located at the Main Exchange and Commissary on Yongsan Garrison. Please bring a penlight or flashlight for the March. For more information, please contact Ms. June Wilkins at crinklygammaiota@yahoo.com or 010-4229-1913.
