Coach’s Corner
Loaded Carries, the Most Important Thing You’re NOT Doing
W
“The loaded carry does more to expand athletic qualities than any other single thing I've attempted in my career as a coach and athlete…and I do not say that lightly.” -Dan John (world-renowned strength coach and author)
hen we think of physical “strength,” the simplest picture that comes to mind is usually that of someone lifting or carrying something HEAVY. Recent trends in the fitness industry (as well as the strength & conditioning industry) have popularized all sorts of new equipment, techniques, programs, exercises, and the like. However, the fundamental principles of human performance are solid for a reason – they work. Whether you are a professional athlete, a die-hard warrior, or a ballerina, the proper application of loaded carries into your training program can help improve your overall strength. NFL strength coach, Buddy Morris, stated, “strength training is nothing more than G.P.P. (general physical preparedness).” In other words, if you’ve already adapted to your current training regiment, it is time to move on to something else that will force your body to change. So what exactly is a loaded carry? Load carrying means from pushing/pulling a sled, carrying a sandbag in your arms, moving a large bucket filled with water, carrying your battle buddy over your shoulder, or a combination of any of those. This is especially practical for soldiers and service members looking to enhance their own PT sessions. Dr. Will Peveler, a researcher at Northern Kentucky University and a former diver with Navy Special Operations, has concluded that the ability to safely move and carry large combat loads is the single most important physical need for tactical athletes in today’s military. With something being as simple as picking up two heavy dumbbells and walking around…can it really get any easier? John Sim is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He is currently the Health & Fitness Program Manager for USAG Yongsan and can be reached at john.y.sim.naf@mail.mil.
