~ Fun in the S Swimming into Fitness: Getting Prepared

S

wimming is a mode of physical activity that is enjoyed by millions of people throughout the world, competitively and recreationally. Swimming can be beneficial to individuals of all age groups and sizes. One major benefit of swimming is that it is a non-weight bearing activity and does not put stress on a persons joints; which one would incur during activities like running or walking. Swimming and aqua aerobics are also increasingly popular amongst individuals who suffer from chronic conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia, and is often used as a means of rehabilitation to recover from injuries. Arthritis is a degenerative disease that affects the cartilage in the joint; which can lead to intense pain because of bone on bone contact. Swimming and water workouts are beneficial to these individuals because of the lack of stress involving the joint. Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects the muscle fibers causing an individual to experience intense pain. Swimming is beneficial to these individuals because the water provides a warming sensation which dilates the blood vessels to allow nutrients and oxygen to flow to the muscle subsiding the onset of pain, allowing their workout to be more enjoyable. BENEFITS OF SWIMMING: 1. Aerobic workout– can assist in improving cardiorespiratory fitness. 2. Resistance workout– full body engagement; water provides a level of resistance and can assist in providing definition and muscle leanness. RISKS OF SWIMMING: 1. Exhaustion– can be mental or physical and happens when the activity becomes to demanding for the body. 2. Panic– often happens in inexperienced swimmers who become overwhelmed by the circumstances. 3. Children– it is important to understand that adults have fully developed lungs and have buoyancy. However, children have a negative buoyancy and have to continually tread water to stay afloat. Therefore, it is important to invest in equipment such as life-vests or other floatation devices for children. NEVER LEAVE A CHILD UNATTENDED IN A POOL! SUGGESTED SWIMMING ATTIRE: 1. Goggles-protect the eyes from chlorinated water and enhance underwater visibility. 2. Swimsuit-can be form fitting or semi-loose. However, it is important to understand that the baggier the item the more drag once will experience. 3. Swim caps-keeps the body streamlined and prevents drag. 4. Swim floats/devices-can be used as safety equipment or for training purposes. 5. Ear Plugs-can assist in preventing water from getting in the ear. By: Edward J. Motley, MS, ACSM-HFS, FMWR Fitness Director Yongsan and Hannam Village Swimming Pools are 7 days a week from 1200-1900. 11
