This month marks the 25th-anniversary of Sung Nam Golf Course and whether you are an active player, casual golfer, or just looking to get started; there has never been a better time to visit the course! Located near the base of Mount Namhan, Sung Nam Golf Course is an 18 hole Championship Course that features over 7000 yards of lush fairways, well-manicured greens, and challenges for players of all skill levels. Since 1991 Sung Nam Golf Course has been operating with the mission of stimulating, developing, and maintaining the mental, physical, and social well-being of the U.S. Military, DoD civilians, and their family members. Recently, I got the opportunity to sit down with Eric Pickering, the course’s General Manager, to learn more about the course’s legacy and what the future holds for Sung Nam. Q: Tell me a little about the course. A: Sung Nam Golf Course was originally an R.O.K. built golf course that was handed over to the U.S. Government as part of a trade out for the property where you see the National Museum of Korea today. The course was opened in 1991 with construction starting a few years prior, roughly 1989. It’s a beautiful course right at the base of the mountains and offers challenges for players of all levels. 13

Sung Nam Golf Course

Q: What have you been doing to prepare for the 25th anniversary? A: Well we’ve been planning, not a gala event but a sort of semi-formal event and dinner for our honorary members, as a gesture of our appreciation. We have members that have been here since the beginning, others that have been here only a few years, and everywhere in between. The honorary member program is huge for us, and it’s a great way for us to be able to generate funds that go back to the garrison and ultimately help support our troops. Q: So what are the greens playing like these days? A: We’re just about fully recovered from the winter months now. You know we play all winter long, so we implement various programs to make sure the course plays well year round. Right now it’s reading about a 9 feet-9.5 feet on the Stimpmeter. (For comparison a green with average speed at the U.S. Open is 8.5 feet.) Q: For someone who has not played at Sung Nam Golf Course before, what does the course look like from tee to green? A: There’s not a lot of water on the course, we have water on several holes but not throughout. It’s more wood lined on most of the holes, a lot of holes are independent, so it’s not a parkland layout in every case. Some holes go parallel like two and four, five and six but aside from that you are going to be spread out. There is plenty of room for the average golfer, but if you want to score from theChampionship tees, you better put it in the right place because it’s not going to hand you anything.

Q: I have a terrible slice, how bad is that going to mess my game up on this course? A: (Laughs) There is room for some holes, other holes are tighter, so you are going to want to work on that a little to keep you more in play. Q: How is the pace of play on the course? A: Pace of the game is about four and a half hours for 18 holes typically. When you get too busy weekends and holidays, it can approach five, but we try and do our best job to keep it under that with our staff of Marshalls and professionals. Q: Are golf carts required? And if so are they allowed in the fairway? A: Players can walk if they like but it is a challenging course to walk, especially on the back nine. We do have a lot of soldiers and DoD folks that choose to walk it, so it’s definitely doable. We do rent carts at the clubhouse, though, so you certainly don’t have to. The entire course is strictly carting path only; we want to keep the course as beautiful as possible for all our active duty members. Q: If I’m coming out by myself, will I meet new people? A: Oh you definitely could, especially if you are by yourself! If you’re a single, we can pair you up. If you are trying to walk-on on a Saturday, you may have to wait a little bit. In the case of our active duty military trying to walk-on, we try to get them on the course within an hour. We wouldn’t be here without our active duty memebers, so we amke every effort to make them a priority. Everyone else, we try to slot in as quickly as possible. Q: Will I be the youngest person out there on the tee box? A: No, we have as young as 10 years old that play on a regular basis. She and her sister are very excellent

players and are out there quite a bit. I’ve seen as young as 7, but with 7 or younger we like to see supervision. They have to know their way around the course and know the etiquette. But our 10 years old goes out, causes no issues what-so-ever, she’s very well versed in the game, and she goes out shooting low scores. She just finished 5th in her most recent tournament.

Q: I know you have Junior Golf Week coming up 20-24 June, but do you offer lessons for older members? A: Absolutely! Myself, my Assistant GM, and my other Assistant Pro are all available at any time. We typically do complimentary lessons for active duty and our DoD, it can consist of either scheduling an appointment or just dropping in and asking if we have a minute. Also, if we see someone struggling, we’re going to try to jump in and hopefully help them out so they can enjoy the game more.

Q: Any new merchandise available for the 25thanniversary that we should know about? A: We have new hats in a large assortment of colors with the 25th-anniversary logo, a large variety of new travel gear, and only 4 golf bags that will be given out as prizes for the club Championship. Sung Nam Golf Course has a long-standing history of providing entertainment and recreation to the U.S. Military, DoD civilians, and their families. Now celebrating 25 years of beautiful landscape, great member benefits, and excellent customer service; if you haven’t seen the course yet, the only real question is “What are you waiting for?” The friendly staff at Sung Nam Golf Course are looking forward to seeing you very soon. Happy Anniversary Sung Nam. Sung Nam Golf Course
