FEELING ADVENTUROUS?

Unit contestants will be challenged to eat possibly awful, probably terrifying, food. The winning Unit will receive a party for their Unit, hosted at Main Post Club or Yongsan Lanes Bowling Center. This is a team competition. Teams consist of 5 contestants. Contestants can be Unit members and their sponsored family members, 18 years of age or older. There can be multiple teams per Unit. Cosmic Bowling

With the weather being so cold and windy this time of year, you might be looking for an indoor activity to keep you warm but while having fun. Instead of staying home and being a couch potato, come over to the Yongsan Lanes Bowling Center. There, you can try their tasty burgers, pizza, and much more while you enjoy a game of bowling. Bowling is a fun activity to participate in, whether you are an experienced bowler or just like to play for fun. There are many weekly programs that the Yongsan Lanes Bowling Center offers such as $1.00 Bowling on Mondays, Cosmic Bowling on Fridays, and Blue Head Pin Bowling on Sunday. Amongst all of these awesome events, the most popular is Cosmic Bowling which is offered on Friday and Saturday night. When you hear the word cosmic bowling, you probably think of glow in the dark shoe laces and t-shirts. Did you know that you wouldn’t get that bright glow without black lights? Your shirt glows because most modern detergents contain phosphors that convert UV light into white light, which cause the glowing effect that we all enjoy to see. You can thank William H. Byler for discovering the black light that provides us with the glowing shirts, shoe laces, and socks. He was credited in discovering the black light in 1935. Byler attended the University of Central Missouri and graduated there in 1927 with a double major in chemistry and physics. Dr. William H. Byler dedicated his entire life to the study of luminescent chemicals which paved the way for advances in technology then and now. The chemicals he studied are used to coat the glass of many different types of screens. His discoveries also lead to more practical uses such as in the field of banking, forensics, medical use, pest management, and theater/graphic arts. Black lights are often used in the diagnosis of skin conditions, including sun damage which could possibly cause skin cancer. To examine the skin with the black light, the patient is observed in a dark room with a black light. The medical professional searches for changes to the skin’s surface. For uses in Forensics, black light 23

technology is useful in investigations. Old bruises or wounds caused by blows to the body have sometimes been detected by black light technology. Cracks in ceramics, glass, and metals that are not visible to the naked eye can also be detected by black light technology. Financial institutions (banks) sometimes use black light technology to examine money which is suspected of being counterfeit. The currency is examined under a black light for inconsistencies and defects. Black light can also be used to verify signatures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems use black light to attract and monitor insect populations. IPM tries to avoid the use of pesticides by attracting specific pests to beneficial insects which eat the pests. Black light traps consist of a 15-watt black light lamp to attract insects which then are killed by electricity, then fall through a funnel into a collection chamber. In the 1940’s, black light was used in motion picture theaters to provide lighting without distracting the audience from viewing the screen. Black light was an invention that attracted audiences and then it was made in to a main feature of upscale movie houses. In smaller theaters, fluorescent murals with seasonal themes were painted on walls. All of these uses including the use of black lights for cosmic bowling at the Yongsan Lanes Bowling Center can be credited to William H. Byler with his discoveries and advances in luminescent chemicals. Without him, there wouldn’t be any glowing shoe laces or t-shirts. So next time you’re feeling like having some fun, consider coming to the Yongsan Lanes Bowling Center. Cosmic Bowling is offered every Friday from 2130-2330 and Saturday from 1900-2330.
