Mt. Obong 22 June 2013 Register at the Moyer Outdoor Recreation Center by 11 June, 1800.

F

MWR celebrates the Great Outdoors Month during the month of June by offering two hiking trips to Dobong Mountain and Obong Mountain. Hiking is a popular activity for the locals. Hiking in Korea is a must do experience while in Korea. All hikes have similar sightseeing which include lavishly colored dressed hikers, ropes along trails, beautiful rock formations, and breath taking views of mother nature herself. On certain hikes you’ll see temples along the route, shrines or other religious representation. There is a distinct range of difficulty between each mountain hike so be sure to choose the right hike for you. The first hike is on the 15th of June and the Moyer Outdoor Recreation Center (ODR) will taking a trip to Dobong Mountain. The famous mountain is located in the Uijeongbu/Yangju (north of Seoul) area. All that attend will have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wi, your tour guide. He has hiked over 60% of the mountains in Korea and his main passion is hiking. He is an excellent tour guide and will be able to make the trip more enjoyable by learning from his experiences. This mountain is more for hikers in the intermediate and above stage although possible for beginners. Haven’t had the chance to hike in Korea yet? This may be the perfect opportunity for you! 01

Tours

A second opportunity presented to folks in Yongsan is to see the great outdoors on the 22nd of June. Moyer ODR plans to go rock climbing on Obong Mountain. This will be the first time the tour is offered to the patrons in Yongsan and those that attend will go on the trip with a certified NAF contracted rock climbing instructor (www.sanirang.net). We have contracted a professional to teach beginners the basics of rock climbing. This is a great opportunity to learn correct form and technique while being safe. In addition, intermediate and experienced climbers can join as well and climb on their own after the first demonstration from the instructor. Customers will be taken to an actual slab of rock as opposed to artificial walls. For both hikes, we highly recommend customers bring a packed lunch and water.

T

Registrations can be done at Moyer ODR. For more information, please call DSN 723-3291/7564 or go to the USAG Yongsan, FMWR Facebook page. O

n June 14, 1775 the U.S. Army was born. Established over 200 years ago, the U.S. Army has since defended our nation with great valor and patriotism. From the American Revolution to the modern days, our Soldiers are forever strong. The 238th birthday of the Army commemorates America’s Army for their valor and hardship throughout the years. This does not only involve the Soldiers but the Families and civilians as well for holding on to hope and supporting our defending troops and keeping America’s freedom strong. The Army involves physical endurance and mental preparedness, encompassing an impenetrable spirit with high ethical and moral values. We must remember the Army for what they do and what they have done. The U.S. Army first grew from revolutionaries that were involved in the American Revolution. At first, the rebellious colonies did not have any military experience and lacked stature compared to the Army we see today. The colonies recruited amateurs to the

23 Army Birthday & Flag Day

force in order to gain extra hands that would be useful to the revolution. They had no unified chain of command, and although Artemas Ward of Massachusetts exercised authority by informal agreement, officers from other colonies were obligated to obey his orders. This caused the volunteers to be led, armed, paid, and supported by the colonies from which they were raised. Many were scared but had determination. In the spring of 1775, the Army was led to confront British troops near Boston, Massachusetts. The revolutionaries had to react quickly and they were able to fend off the British troops that came to attack. Realizing the needs of more arms to enlist around the American seaboard colonies, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress have made arrangements to have a meeting with the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia to assume authority for the New England Army. At John Adams’ request, Congress decided to “adopt” the Boston Troops on June 14th. In addition

to the day, Congress resolved to form a committee to create a system in a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army. Congress then authorized the formation of ten companies of riflemen from the northern colonies such as Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia to march directly to Boston and support the New England Militia. Later, George Washington received his appointment as commander-in-chief of the continental Army and formally took command at Boston on July 3, 1775. As we remember what the U.S. Army did for our nation, celebrating the 238th birthday will assist the Army become a stronger branch of America’s military. On June 14, 2013, the U.S. Army will be another year older and another year stronger. Not only is June a month to celebrate the birthday of the U.S. Army, but it’s also the month to commemorate the U.S. Flag- the symbol of our freedom. Two years after the U.S. Army was born, the United States Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States of America on June 14th, 1777. Many elements of the Army had separate groups and separate battalions which formed their own colors and distinguishing flags which grew as an off-balanced way of viewing the military of the United States. Flag Day was first celebrated during the civil war which was flown at Hartford, Connecticut on June 14, 1861. By 1877, the U.S. Government requested that the flag be hung from all public buildings to remind Americans of the freedom we fight for. In the early 20th century, Flag Day celebrations often took part in educational programs. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that stated June 14th would be the day of honoring our flag. On August 3rd, 1949 President Harry S. Truman signed their resolution stating that it is the right to proudly display the flag that represents our freedom. With every right comes responsibility as well which includes the responsibility to display our flag the right way instead of displaying it with no respect. We cannot be seen as a free and proud country without presenting respect to our own flag.

The United States is full of patriotic citizens who are very proud of where they are from. We accept others as equals and we help others because it’s in our blood. Take a moment and celebrate the U.S. Army Birthday and the U.S. Flag Day because without it, none of us would be the same today. In celebration of the U.S. Army’s 238th Birthday, the FMWR Sports division has planned the Army Birthday 5K Fun Run on Saturday, 15 June which will begin at the Collier Community Fitness Center. Registrations will be open at 0700 and the run will begin at 0800. The first 300 patrons to finish the race will receive a free t-shirt. Artwork displayed on this page. For more information, please call DSN 736-4588. Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) has also planned a few events on 14 June. The Child Development Center (CDC) will have special guest reader, inflatable bounce houses, refreshments and a variety of activities for each class from 1530-1700. On that same day, the Middle School and Teen Center will have an Army Birthday Celebration/End of School Jam Block Party from 1300-1700. There will be games, food, a DJ, raffles and of course, cake! For more information, please call DSN 738-2311. Last but not least, R & R Bar and Grill has planned Right Arm Night on Friday, 14 June from 1630-2030. Bring your buddies and be ready to have a good time. For more information, please call DSN 723-8785/5678 or go to the USAG Yongsan, FMWR Facebook page.
