COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Project

Improvement Dear Sung Nam Golfers, We are pleased to announce a golf course improvement project that will end in June. The plan involves replacing the fairway grasses, currently consisting of Kentucky Blue Grass, northern rye grass, poa annua, and a variety of other grasses, with Zoysia grass native to Korea. After long and careful consideration, we are making this transition for a variety of very good reasons. First and foremost, we feel this change will greatly improve the overall playing conditions. Secondly, it will dramatically reduce our annual maintenance expenses for the upkeep of the golf course, saving vital MWR dollars. Lastly, and most importantly, as stewards of the land, we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental footprint by maintaining safe and healthy green space. Zoysia grass requires far less chemical applications, lower watering rates, and reduced mowing cycles. We fully understand that there will be some disruption to normal play during the repair phase and we apologize in advance for any early season

13

Community Spotlight

inconvenience. Despite the disruptions, we guarantee that there will always be 18 holes open for play and that the project is fast tracked for completion by June. Many of you that have played the golf course since October have seen a small sampling of the project when playing hole #6. Hole #6 was transplanted last fall as the grass was entering its dormancy period, which required a little extra protection during winter (heavy sand topdressing and no mowing) to ensure prime health this spring. As the majority of this project will take place during the optimum growing season, we anticipate the transition to be smoother, quicker, and ready for immediate play. We will be posting a project schedule in advance announcing holes that will be closed and we ask your cooperating during this time to follow closely the alternate flow of the golf course. Please adhere to the directions of staff, stay on the cart paths and use caution to safely bypass the areas under repair.

We thank you for your understanding and we look forward to this tremendous opportunity for long term health and improvement to your MWR facility. If at any time you have any questions or would like to discuss the project, my office is located in the administrative area of the clubhouse or you may phone me at DSN 7363493. Sincerely, Jack Delaney, PGA

Take the time and acknowledge people or organizations that make a difference in our community. Send your submissions to facebook.com/fmwryongsan or to dfmwr.marketing@hotmail.com for June's Community Spotlight.

USAGY

BIGGEST LOSER UPDATE

O

n 12 March, 2011 the first USAG Yongsan Bigger Loser competition commenced. Over 100 people registered for the competition and it is still ongoing. I am pleased to say that by week 4, we have lost over 150lbs. Already, Team Collier and Trent have averaged a reduction of over 4lbs of per person. In the lead is Marie Twiss (Team Collier) with a total of around 25lbs lost! Though the goal of this contest is weight loss, our overall vision was to increase healthy lifestyles, comradely, and improve the moral within the USAGY community. We have seen body rockers rooting each other on and going above and beyond what is required in their workout. My advice to participants who many have not seen the dramatic drop that
