Community Spotlight

Military Spouse Appreciation Month I

n 1984, President Ronald Regan signed a proclamation officially recognizing Military Spouse Day. Spouses are essential to the strength of the nation. For more than 236 years, spouses have supported their Soldiers on the field and on the home front. In the 19th century, the Army protected settlers moving west. Army spouses braved the journey and life on the frontier to be with the Soldiers. When relocating, they rode ox- or horse-drawn carts and wagons and, sometimes, even walked. They confronted harsh climate, disease, and attack while coping with military life. Today's Army spouses still confront many challenges. In the 21st century, the Army has a global presence in eighty countries. The Army is committed to improving Family readiness through better funding of programs, better health care, housing, schools, youth services, childcare, education and employment opportunities. Army spouses are community leaders, careerists, mothers, fathers, and Soldiers. It is understood that at times, spouses miss out on the opportunity to build careers because they move around so much to be with their loved ones. Use this month to formally recognize your spouse for everything they do for you. Take advantage of some of the programs FMWR has to offer this month. If you have children, the Child, Youth & School Services will offer Community Wide Parents Night/Day Out. Community Wide Parents' Night Out will be held on Friday, 16 May from 1900-2200. Community Wide Parents' Day Out will be held on Saturday, 24 May from 1200-1700 and the location will be at the Child Development Center on both dates. Bring your spouse over to R & R Bar and Grill for Karaoke Night or maybe play a game or two of Cosmic Bowling at 09

Community Spotlight

the Yongsan Lanes Bowling Center. From 20-22 May, the Army Community Service will have their very first Company Leadership Spouse Seminar. The seminar is open to any Company Commander and 1Sgt Spouse. For the spouses that are currently seeking employment, information can also be found at websites like www.usajobs.gov, https://msepjobs.militaryonesource. mil, www.military.com/spouse or www.myarmylife too.com. The provided websites will list any employment opportunities available at any location. If you need help writing your resume or are seeking more information, contact the Employment Readiness Program manager at DSN 738-8977. FMWR's Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) are also seeking help so if you're interested, type in CYSS in the search engine at one of the websites listed above. Spouses routinely put the welfare of their Soldier, Family and nation above their own. After almost a decade of war and multiple deployments, our Active, Army Reserve, and National Guard spouses unconditionally continue to support America's Army. The strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their Families. Thank you to all of our military spouses for your countless contributions and sacrifices!

Take the time and acknowledge people and organizations that make a difference in our community. Send your submissions to facebook.com/fmwryongsan or to dfmwr.marketing@hotmail.com for June’s Community Spotlight.

RESOURCES FOR HEALTH

GET HEALTHIER TODAY WITH THE PERFORMANCE TRIAD!

The System for Health is a partnership among Soldiers, Families, leaders, health teams and communities.

Health is personal and each of us defines it in our own way. Health is more than the absence of illness; achieving better health means taking a proactive approach to your well-being. This includes regular activity, good nutrition and quality sleep. Combined, these elements make up the Army Performance Triad and can apply to everyone!

Use the following resources to support healthy activity, nutrition and sleep for you and your Family.

What does health look like to you? Share your thoughts with us at http://armymedicine.mil. Health is more than meets the eye. It looks like: ZZ Z

8 is great! Current Army guidance is 7-8 hours of sleep per 24-hour period for effective performance. The first step to getting a full night’s sleep is to maintain a consistent, regular routine.

This Month @ the Yongsan Library Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month A celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States. President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. http://asianpacificheritage.gov/
