COACH’S CORNER “Legs 101 – Split Squats”

When it comes to working out your legs, you’ve probably tried every exercise under the sun: squats, lunges, machines, stairs, sprints, treadmills, hill sprints, and the list goes on and on. While there is certainly a time and place for every kind of exercise the Split Squat (aka: Bulgarian Split Squats, Rear Foot Elevated Lunge, etc) is a fundamental staple in the world of strength & conditioning and one of the most effective, efficient, and underrated movements to develop stronger legs and hips. An extremely versatile tool, the Split Squat is used by physical therapy patients, professional athletes, bodybuilders, fitness enthusiasts, and just about anyone looking to “up” their leg game. Add it to your own training program and see the results for yourself! ..

The Basics 1. Find a sturdy bench or any elevated platform that does not go past your knee. 2. Standing with your back to the bench, take one step forward and rest the top of one foot onto the benchwhile balancing your weight onto the opposite foot. 3. Slowly bend your front knee and allow the opposite knee to gently touch the ground (you may want to place a pad or towel under the knee for comfort) 4. Using your front hip and leg, straighten the front knee until you return to the starting position

Coaching Points 1. Be sure that your shoulders are square and that your spin is straight throughout the entire movement…no hunching. 2. When descending, do not allow your front knee to extend too far in front of your foot. This will cause pressure to shift entirely to the knee and you will defeat the purpose of the exercise 3. Focus on putting pressure into your hips (glutes) when trying to straighten your knee. Your quads will do their job regardless; your hips are what need to be consciously engaged in order to benefit from the movement.

Benefits -Significantly less pressure on the spine and knee (when compared to conventional barbell squats) -Develops unilateral strength in each of your legs -Develops hip, knee, and ankle stability -In my opinion, the best exercise for developing hips (glutes)

Progression tools: 1. Wear a weight vest to add simple resistance 2. Hold dumbbells or kettlebells by your side to add more resistance without loading the spine 3. Use a TRX strap to develop even greater stability 4. Perform with a loaded barbell for maximum resistance (advanced)
