ith the weather finally warming up and the sun shining bright, we should definitely take advantage of the month of May before Monsoon season approaches. Despite the fact that there are several people out there who love to go fishing, the number of people who has actually gone out on the ocean and experienced the awe of deep sea fishing, which takes the event to a whole new level, is a lot lower than we think. When it comes to fishing in the deep seas, you never know what you might get a glimpse of because this is where the most outlandish and hefty-sized fish and other sea animals reside. In addition to the first you might reel in, just the experience of being out on the water can be exhilarating in itself. Physically, fishing is not demanding. It doesn't take a lot of strength and stamina to fish. However, fishing does incorporate the exercising of the lungs, heart and various muscle groups. Finding a good place to fish generally includes walking, possibly some minor climbing, and carrying fishing gear to the favorite fishing spot. In this case, it would be out in the ocean. These are all physical activities which burn calories and exercise various muscle groups, all of which is good for your health. Some of the other benefits associated with fishing include exercising the muscles in your the fingers, hands, wrists and forearms. Assembling a reel, attaching hooks, sinkers, bobbin's and even the bait are all activities which work these muscles to some degree as

well. Then, there is the casting of the bait into the water. This activity exercises the muscles of the upper arm, shoulder and back. You probably won't get a good cardio workout from fishing, but patrons can expect to get enough exercise to maintain a degree of dexterity and maybe some muscle tone. Fishing is also beneficial for your lungs and skin. Being outdoors gives you the opportunity to get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Sunshine is another health benefit derived from fishing. Although some people like fishing enough to brave inclement weather, most prefer a nice sunny day to fish. Mentally, fishing requires very little effort. Attach some form of bait to a hook, cast it into the water, and wait for the fish to bite. Because fishing doesn't require a huge amount of brain power, all those brain cells get to kick back and relax for a while. No pressure, no deadlines, nobody wanting this or that, no noisy machines or people; just fresh air, sunshine and plenty of rest and relaxation. A brain vacation!

id you know that May is considered to be National Barbeque Month in America? If you truly think about it, the month is perfect for having a Barbeque outdoors because not only is the weather typically nice, but it’s a great way to spend time with family, friends, coworkers and maybe even your pets! With monsoon season on its way, take advantage of the clear sunny skies and fire up the grill! Don’t have a grill to have a barbeque? Don’t worry about it! The Moyer Outdoor Recreation Center (ODR) provides a rental service for all USFK ID Card Holders and they have everything you need to have the perfect barbeque. While you’re at it, rent out a jumper for the kids, a table and chairs to sit at and maybe even a few coolers to keep your drinks cool. For more information, please call 723-3291.
11 National Barbeque Month
If all you’re looking for is a good location to have a barbeque, call the Collier Community Fitness Center to book a picnic area today! There are multiple locations in Yongsan and Hannam Village which vary in different party sizes. A few great things about these picnic areas is that they’re sheltered so you can have a barbeque on rainy days, they have power outlets for music and other electronics, lights to use so the party can go on when the sun sets, and tables with built in chairs. Last but not least, the picnic areas already have barbeque grills. After making a reservation for your desired picnic area, you can pick up the key that opens the grill and you can start your party. For more information, please call 736-4588. Aside from all the barbequing and partying, it’s very important to keep grilling safety in mind. Here are a few grilling safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association: √ Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors √ The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging braches √ Keep children and pets away from the grill area √ Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill √ Never leave your grill unattended In a span of four years, the U.S. Fire departments responded to an average of 8,200 home fire involving grills, hibachis or barbeques per year, including the average of 3,400 structure fires and 4,800 outside fires. These 8,200 fires caused an annual average of 15 civilian deaths, 120 civilian injuries and $75 million in direct property damage.
Outside R & R Bar and Grill Featuring BBQ Chicken & Ribs
1130-1300
R & R Bar and Grill For more information, call 723-5678/8785. Many people create dishes that were passed down in their family to bring to barbeques. Some dishes may include potato salad, cole slaw, deviled eggs, salad, beans, macaroni and cheese and rice. One of the best things about being in Korea is being able to have all the Korean barbeque you want. Why not make it yourself? Recipe for Korean Barbeque 4 tablespoons of soy sauce 3 tablespoons of sugar 4 tablespoons of grated onion 1 tablespoon of grated ginger 1 clove of garlic (grated) 1 tablespoon of sesame oil Optional: 2 tablespoons of ground white sesame seeds Optional: 1 red pepper Mix the ingredients together. If you are using this for chicken, marinate the chicken in the sauce overnight. For sliced beef, marinate for half an hour. Enjoy!

n following April’s Earth Day, May is Bike month (Bicycle month). Bike month is a yearly international event that advocates the importance of bicycling as a means of transportation. Bicycling is the second most popular outdoor activity in the U.S.. Popularity of riding bicycles rose from wanting to be more fit, save money, being environmental friendly, and competitive/non competitive riding, and individual reasons. Less than half of Americans state they would like more bicycle facilities in their communities. Luckily, we live in Seoul and a daily bicycle commute is a viable option for most of us and biking paths are located throughout the city. The weather is an important factor and May is a perfect month to bring your bike out and explore the hidden wonders and beauties of Seoul. If you’re looking to purchase a bike, the Yongsan Exchange sells bicycles and bicycle gear. Other bicycle shops can also be found off post. If renting a bike sounds more suitable for you, rentals are available along the Han River for 3,000 KRW per hour; tandems for 15,000 KRW per hour. One specific location is outside Yeoinaru Subway Station, rentals are located outside the entrance. Sometimes it’s relaxing to leave it up to a tour guide and pay a little extra, in this case, Moyer Outdoor Recreation Center and K-16 Community Activity Center will offer bicycle tours during the spring and summer. A tour is a nice place to meet fellow bikers and another opportunity to through Facebook. Cycling is a popular activity here in Korea and has many Facebook social network enthusiast groups such as the Han River Riders, Seoul Cycle, West Seoul Cycling, Bike Party Seoul to name a few. Besides improving your social life, the fact is, biking benefits the economy, environment and health.
Interesting Facts: √ A University of Cincinnati study estimated that houses within 1,000 feet of Ohio’s Little Miami Scenic Trail are worth an extra $9,000. √ Another study found that three bike paths in Central Florida bring $42 million in annual spending and 516 jobs to the area’s economy. √ After New York City installed protected bike lanes on Columbus Avenue, bicycling increased 56%, all traffic crashes decreased 34%, speeding decreased, sidewalk biking went down, vehicle traffic flow remained the same, and double parking decreased. √ Bicycling in Salt Lake City—which has recently added 50 miles of bikeways—increased 27% from 2010 to 2011. √ University of Wisconsin researchers estimated that if Midwesterners ran half of their short distance errands (less than five miles round trip) by bike instead of by car, they would avoid 1,100 deaths each year and save $7 billion in healthcare costs. √ With a new study pegging the cost of obesity-related diseases at an extra $48-66 billion per year by 2030 (thanks to the additional 65 million obese adults we’ll have in the U.S. by then), bicycling’s benefits should warrant attention from everyone—whether they ride bikes or not. (Facts provided by http://www.bikesbelong.org/statistics.) Don’t let weather, time or money stand in your way and start bicycling today! Collier Community Fitness Center offers free Spinning Classes throughout the week. The instructors are there to help you with your form, goals, and motivation. There are so many reasons to pick up a bike this Month and every month after so enjoy the ride.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States. In 1977-78, Congress passed legislation recognizing the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. It was expanded in May, 1990 when President George H.W. Bush designated May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the diverse culture of Asian Americans and the accomplishments and contributions they have made. The theme this year is “Lighting the Past, Present, and Future.” http://www.mmb.state.mn.us Peterson’s DoD Libraries: ACT, AFAST, ASTB, ASVAB, CLEP, GED, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, NCLEX-PN, NCLEX-RN, & SAT For more information, call 723-7380.

Want to be FMWR’s
Fan of the Week? Fan of the Week is a program which allows our Facebook fans the chance to win great prizes. Phrases, questions and clues will be asked during the week and the first fan to give the right answer will be the Fan of the Week. The winner’s quote and their photo will be posted along with a quote in the Fan of the Week tab for the entire week. If you would like the chance to be Fan of the Week, keep up to date with the USAG Yongsan, FMWR Facebook page.
