SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

Take the FREE ACS Subway & Bus Tour and learn how to use Public Transportation

Story

an d

photos by Shantall Cummins

The Korean public transportation system at first glance may seem like an overwhelming and confusing endeavor. While the subway system has some signs in English, currently there is no officially publicized bus schedule in English for tourist to use. Not to mention the fact that most bus stop names are written in Hangul which can make changing buses downright complicated and confusing. Even with signs in English, changing subway lines can be a bit tricky. Add to that a strained language barrier, culture shock and fears of getting lost in a foreign country that can be overwhelming enough to avoid public transportation in Korea completely. However, with a little assistance, the USAG-RC Army Community Service (ACS) is ready to help you learn your way around Korea’s public transportation system on Uncle Sam’s dime. Yes, ACS will show you everything you need to know for free in one fun-filled and adventurous afternoon. They’ll have you traveling the countryside like a native in no time. Newly arrived Adriana Mendoza, her daughter Eva, Diana Perez, her son Derek, and two new DoD civilians were joined by Pamela Brockmann, Relocation Readiness Program Manager, ACS, for a “Subway 101 Class” followed by a trip to downtown Uijongbu by subway to really get the full experience. The class covers basic subway, bus and bullet train navigation skills as well as useful information about onpost and off-post taxis. You’ll learn how to transfer lines, pay for transport, which taxis to avoid, where to purchase bullet train tickets, where to find accurate schedules in 16

English, better routes to take and the best places to buy the convenient T-Money card and how to use it. This is exactly what tour attendees learned when they took advantage of this free FMWR program recently. “I find this to be very beneficial. Especially when you don’t know where anything’s at, and this is a new place,” commented Adriana Mendoza, wife of SSG Robert Mendoza, Charlie Company, 304th Integrated Signal Battalion. With an influx in command sponsorship to Area I, it’s become more important for Soldiers and Family members to learn how to get around on their own. With this free opportunity, there’s no better time to learn. There are an infinite amount of things to see in Korea and almost all of them are easily accessible by subway or train. The ACS Subway tour is a great way to learn about the many interesting areas to see for the whole family.

IN THE ZONE

17

Riding the subway can be a very inexpensive way to travel. The average cost from Dongducheon to Seoul, a distance of 48.1 km (25.9 mi), costs W1600, approximately $1.42 each way. A trip from Dongducheon to the subway station closest to Osan AB would cost roughly W2200, about $1.95 each way. Children under 6 years of age ride free. Each walking tour sponsored by ACS is specifically tailored to each individual participant. Meaning, if you’re hungry, they can take you to some great local restaurants. If shopping is what you fancy, they will show you where to find just about anything on your list. If you bring along the kids, they can direct you to the nearest toy store full of fun and exciting local merchandise or, if you just want to get some fresh air and gaze at beautiful scenery, this tour is right up your alley. The possibilities are endless, and ACS will make sure that you feel comfortable in any situation. “The walking tour gets rid of the fear factor and builds confidence,” says Brockmann. “Remember to bring your walking shoes because we’re walking to the subway station, and we’ll be walking around downtown Uijongbu.” Soon after the brief classroom session, the group took to the streets to make use of what they learned by walking to the Bosan Subway Station right outside Camp Casey’s main gate. Group members were provided with a loaded T-Money card to use and return at the end of the trip.

“The subway trip is free, courtesy of ACS, but if you want to purchase your own T-Money card or do some shopping downtown, you’ll need to bring some won,” Brockmann explained. Tour members had no problem leading the way to downtown Uijongbu. “I think it’s a really helpful experience. I’ve never been on the subway before. Ms. Brockmann explained how to use the map. I never knew how to read a Korean map and I just didn’t know how to get there. This a lot more 18

What’s a T-Money card?

A T-Money card is a convenient rechargeable pass used to pay for bus, train and some taxi fares instead of using cash. When you use the T-Money card, you also get a discounted fare. One of the most beneficial perks of using the T-Money card is free bus transfers. If you change buses five times within 10 km using the T-Money card, the cost is only W900 (80¢). Without it the cost is W4500 ($3.98). T-Money cards are accepted same as cash in some stores and attractions, such as Lotte World Amusement Park, and are widely accepted throughout Korea for use on subways and buses from other regions. Learn more about it when you take the free ACS Subway tour.

DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)

The Joint Security Area (JSA)

OP Dora

The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters in diameter. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards assinated two United Nations Command officers with axes on August 18, 1976. Following the “Ax-murder incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA. That marking system continues today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with 126, 1 meter-high white stakes along the boundary line at 10-meter intervals. In the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side maintains six guard posts in the JSA. No more than 35 armed guards can be present on either side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. Many political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.

This is located within the DMZ and the northernmost observatory in the South where you can see North Korea closest at hand. Propaganda village and North Korean farmland are located just ahead. Part of the city area of Gaeseong, Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Seong can be seen through a telescope.

DMZ Third Tunnel

The 3rd Tunnel was discovered just 52 km away from Seoul, in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. The tunnel is 1,635m in length, 2m in width, and 2m in height. Also, it is large enough for an army of 30,000 fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within one hour. This is the largest tunnel discovered to date, indicating how strong a potential North Korean plot to invade Seoul was at that time.
