SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

Korean Folk Village and Hwaseong Fortress
The Korean Folk Villages are home to numerous collec-
tions of Korean cultural artifacts, providing an opportunity for people to experience and learn Korean ancestral culture firsthand. The site provides a venue to promote traditional culture to both domestic and international visitors, and provides an open-air learning place for succeeding generations. The Korean Folk Village tour will also include performances such as Farmers’ Music and Dance, Acrobatics on a tightrope and a traditional Korean wedding.

Dorasan Station
Dorasan station, the northernmost train station in South Korea, was built in anticipation of the reunification of North & South Korea and in hopes of connecting with the Gyongueisun Line that would link the peninsula with the Siberian Railway. The Third Tunnel
The third tunnel was discovered in October of 1978. 1.95 meters high, 2.1 meters wide and 1,635 meters long, it penetrates 435 meters south of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and ends at the Truce Village of Panmunjeom. The JSA
After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the Joint Security Area (JSA) became a neutral location where guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the MDL was not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) oďŹƒcers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system remains today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is within the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). Each side has six guard posts with no more than 35 armed guards. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between North and South Korea.
- You must carry your passport or ID card on tour day. - Do not touch any equipment such as microphones or ags belonging to the communist side. - Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, or in any way approach or respond to personnel from the other side. - Torn jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, shorts, military clothing or sandals (slippers) are not permitted in the tour area. - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed. - Children under 10 years of age are not permitted on this tour.

Beating
the Drums Korean-Style Story by Soojin Atwater Photos by Kim, Ho Yong
"Dung-dung kung, dung dung kung! Dung-dung kung dung-dung kung!" As you enter the Camp Casey Community Activity Center (CAC) on Tuesday evenings you can't help but notice and feel the concussion of powerful percussion instrument sounds echoing throughout the building. The sound, dominating and powerful as a football team's cheerleading band, is actually spiritual music played on a Korean traditional drum instrument called "Janggu" performed by students in a free class offered at the CAC every week. Janggu is one of several Korean drum varieties made from a Paulownia tree which is indigenous 34

to Korea. The wood from this tree is often used to make furniture and musical instruments because of its tonal qualities and resistance to mold. The body of the drum features a tight waist in the center and two round-shaped bowls at each side that are covered with leather. The leather on the left hand side is thicker than the one on the right for softer and lower drum sounds. Higher and sharper drum sounds come from the right side of Janggu while the left side produces the softer tones. Two bamboo sticks are used to beat the drum, but sometimes an open left hand is used to make a stronger, heavier sound. Janggu is the most commonly used Korean percussion instrument due to the diversity of tones it
is able to create. "I've been taking this class since June this summer. It's a great opportunity for me and my family to learn Korean culture during our tour by taking this class," says Channa Robles. "I've been going home showing my daughter how to play Janggu and today I brought her with me to the class," Robles added with excitement. "I'm IN THE ZONE

happy that the class is available for us to take at no cost since not only do we learn to play a percussion instrument, but we are exposed to and learn about Korean culture," Robles says explaining the benefits of taking Janggu class with her 16-year-old daughter, Jenna Jackson and her husband, PFC Joseph Robles, 302D BSB.

"When I saw the flyer for the first time at the Casey Community Activity Center I thought it would be something fun and different to try. We plan to stay 2-3 years more in Korea. I plan to keep attending this class because it’s fun. The teacher is very nice and I'd absolutely recommend it to other people. It's pretty neat, provides exposure to
Korean culture, plus it's free. So, why not try it out?" concludes Robles. "No prior musical skill is required to learn Janggu," says the instructor, Ms. Kong Ok Silvia. "Janggu is easy to learn and fun to play! I hope to see more people taking this class, especially family members to include school-age kids," Silvia continues. "You don't need to bring your own Janggu to join this class since I bring them for my students. Depending on the individual, students usually start feeling comfortable playing it within the first 3-4 months providing they keep practicing." Silvia recommends students hold off purchasing their own Janggu for the first few couple of months just to make sure they are going to stick with it. She advises students to practice basic Korean chants with hand tapping on their thighs or desks at the beginning stages. “Later, when they feel they are truly interested in

learning Janggu in depth, it would be a good idea to purchase their own. The entry-level student can expect to spend $80-$100 for an inexpensive model. However, exclusive Janggu instruments can cost up to several thousand dollars," Silvia adds. "I'm still learning traditional Korean music and dance. The more I know about them the more I get into it. I just love sounds of our traditional music," she says explaining how she got into traditional Korean folk culture. “I’ve always dreamed of becoming a professional Korean folk music singer from my teenage years when I first saw Korean folk music and dance performance,” she says. Five years ago, Silvia had an opportunity to watch a Korean folk musical show in Dongducheon City that reignited her motivational spirit to pursue her dream. It's been five years since she began studying traditional Korean music and she is now a certified instructor in traditional Korean music and accomplished in Janggu. "In traditional art, the audience expects to experience music and dance together. People want visual entertainment while they listen to their favorite traditional music. In order to preserve our own culture we need to practice and study more," says Silvia, who hopes to pass down these traditions to the next generation. She is currently enrolled in a college program pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in traditional Korean dance. "As a Korean who is married to an American, I’ve had the chance to appreciate both cultures and I enjoy the opportunity to share my own culture with US families," Silvia says, who volunteers many hours every week at the Camp Casey Community Activity Center. "I never intended to have my kids learn Korean folk art, but I think by watching their own mother deepening her appreciation of her own traditional
38

culture they are developing an interest too. Recently my younger daughter who is attending college in Boston put a live performance together with her American friends using Korean instruments including Janggu. The performance was based on a love story but it was all done in a traditional Korean music concept. I was very proud of her!" exclaims the happy mother.
The free Janggu class is every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Camp Casey Community Activity Center. Registration is available at the front desk. Should students decide to purchase their own Janggu before they depart Korea, there is a good selection of Korean traditional instruments in the Jong-ro area in Seoul. The street is called "Kuk-ak gu-ri" features many other traditional Korean instruments as well as Janggu. If you have any questions regarding the free Janggu class or traditional Korean music in general, email your questions to Silvia at yikongok@hotmail.com or call Camp Casey Community Activity Center at 730-4601. Z
How long have you been taking Janggu class? "Since the beginning of the class back in July."
What made you decide to take this class? "My friend is a professional Korean drum player. She performs many places in Seoul. I always wanted to learn it too. Then, I found out Casey CAC is offering a free class."
How is the class? "I just love it. I love the way the drum sounds and the style as well as the technique. It's a great opportunity to experience Korean tradition." SSG Daniel McLeod, 70th Brigade Support Battalion
How do you practice? “Sometimes we (my friend and I) practice Janggu in the office with our hands drumming on tables without the Janggu, just to practice rhythm. People in the office wonder what we are doing. It's funny, but practicing is fun. We chant the notes that we learned from the class as we practice tapping out the rhythms. We will probably buy a Janggu before we leave Korea. We also take the free Korean language class every Wednesday here at Casey CAC as well."

OPERATION BABY BUNDLE
The Area I Baby Bundle Program began in May 2010 and is designed to assist young military families (E4 and below) by providing new mothers and newborns with after delivery basic necessities. “Operation Baby Bundle” is a partnership between 2ID, Area I Senior Spouses and Army Community Service (ACS). Volunteers solicit donations, assemble and package the donations, sew and assemble the baby blankets and package the bundles. 2ID and Area I Senior Spouses initiated this service for all pregnant Soldiers (E4 and below) and civilian spouses of Soldiers (E4 and below) who are in their last trimester of pregnancy. Since May 2010, ACS has received 27 requests for Baby Bundles. Bundles contain a handmade baby blanket, newborn outfits, caps, socks, newborn diapers, wet wipes, diaper rash cream, burping cloths, disposable nursing pads, and personal items for Mom. They also contain a certificate for a free infant development book from ACS. Contents of Baby Bundles may vary depending on availability of items. Baby bundles, available while supplies last, save the expectant family an average of $70. In ACS, the Family Advocacy Program Manager (FAPM) oversees the Baby Bundle Program. The New Parent Support Home Visitor is the point of contact. Parents requesting a Baby Bundle must be assigned to Area I and must meet be a Soldier E-4 or below or a Family Member of an active duty Soldier E-4 and below. Exceptions must be approved by the FAPM or ACS Director. Individuals may request a Baby Bundle by filling out a Baby Bundle Request form at any ACS center in Area I (M-F, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.). This is also an opportunity to learn more about the New Parent Support Program. Families can receive services that are tailored to their needs and interests. Services can include home visitations, classes for moms and dads and access to other information/resources including parenting, couple relations and child development. Information on baby basics such as crying, sleeping, feeding, and bathing are also offered. For more information, individuals may contact the ACS New Parent Support Program (NPSP) at 7303107/3183 or the FAPM at 730-3150.
