SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The USAG-Red Cloud/Area I FAMILY and MWR logo has been designed with this in mind. The two main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The symbol for ‘human,’ or ‘people’ not only speaks of the Korean population, but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the USAG-Red Cloud/Area I logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in our community. The official USAG-Red Cloud/Area I community includes Camp Red Cloud, Camp Mobile, Camp Castle, Camp Casey, Camp Hovey, Camp Stanley, Camp Jackson and Camp Kwang-Sa Ri, as well as Warrior Base Range, New Mexico Range and KTC-Rodriguez Range.

Who’s Your

Designated Driver? By Shantall Cummins

Having a designated driver while out partying isn’t a new concept. But many choose to ignore the consequences of drinking and driving and opt to take the risk anyway. Having a designated driver is one simple step that can prevent unfortunate deaths and injuries. Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation are helping to reduce drunk driving incidents by providing all designated drivers with free soft drinks. “We’re offering free non-alcoholic beverages to designated drivers to encourage people to bring their party to our clubs and to ensure that they get to where they’re going safely,” says David Roudybush, FMWR Business Operations Division Director. “The whole purpose is about safety,” says Roudybush. “One of the quotes that I’ve heard many times is that ‘clubs save lives’ and the whole point of that is they have a safe ride home whether it’s giving them free soft drinks for designated drivers or getting them assistance finding a safe ride home.” Patrons that chose to ride with their designated drivers and drink at FMWR clubs aren’t limited to just the clubs. Designated drivers and their friends can also enjoy a good time at all FMWR Bowling Centers and Golf Clubs, too. “It’s every bar we have. It’s not just the clubs. So if they go to the golf course and they have a drink, their designated driver gets free soft drinks as well. Same way at the bowling centers because we know a lot of Soldiers go there to have fun, bowl and to then also drink at the same time,” says Roudybush. Designated drivers can enjoy completely free soft drinks, coffee or tea while sharing a great time with their friends. All they need to do is inform the waitress that they’re the designated driver and they’ll receive the same attention as their drinking buddies. There’s no reason the designated driver cannot enjoy a good time out with friends in a safe and energetic atmosphere where you’ll get the best deals on the peninsula. So before ruining a career or losing someone’s life, think before you party, always have a designated driver.

Military Family Appreciation Month Every November since the year 1993, our nation has celebrated the contributions and sacrifices of the military family. Military Family Appreciation Month was established 17 years ago by the Armed Services YMCA and has received continued recognition by the United States government every year since. The theme this year for the Army is “Army Families-We Honor Your Faithful Commitment, Strength and Resilience. The Army Family Appreciation Month provides an opportunity for Army leaders to raise awareness about the importance and commitment of Army Families.

In Area I, Army Community Service (ACS) strives to honor families and their sacrifices each and every day. We extend a heartfelt thanks to all Family Members and honor their continued strength and undaunted courage. During the month of November and in recognition of Military Family Appreciation Month we would like to personally invite you to take part in many of the activities in ACS and in our Pear Blossom Family Outreach Centers that are available to make our families more resilient (USAG Red Cloud, USAG Casey or Camp Stanley). Additionally, during this month while your family is out and about in our community be sure to stop by one of the three Pear Blossom Family Outreach Centers and take part in one of the many special celebrations of the Military Family that will be conducted there. Please contact each center for additional information regarding dates and times of the specific Military Family Appreciation Month celebrations. Casey Pear Blossom Cottage: Building T2345, 730-3837.
