DMZ The Joint Security Area (JSA) The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where the guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) officers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues until today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than thirty five armed guards can be present on each side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. All kinds of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.

SATURDAYS,
TOUR
JULY 14 & 21 AUGUST 4 & 11 SEPTEMBER 8 & 22
Observation Post (OP) Dora As the northernmost observatory in South Korea, OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Song can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2 meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within an hour. The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so far, indicating North Korea’s desire to invade Seoul during that time.
All participants must have their passport or I.D. card on them during the tour. DMZ Tour Guidelines - When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any equipment belonging to North Korea. - Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach or respond to personnel from the other side. - Military or other official considerations may prevent entry into the JSA. - Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, shorts, military clothes, and sandal/slippers are not permitted during the tour. - Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed. - Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.
Dress Code - Jeans with holes not allowed - Shorts and skirts must fall at or below the knees - Collared shirts preferred - Open-toed shoes are not allowed

Transparent Language Online IMCOM Library Program recently purchased “Transparent Language Online,” a web-based language learning tool free to Family and MWR library customers. The online program is packed full of pronunciation, speech, grammar, writing and vocabulary building lessons for 50 languages including Arabic, Farsi, Dari and Pashto. It’s an excellent tool for learning basic building blocks of a particular language for school, as a tourist or as a deployed Soldier. An added bonus to the program is the ability to take your learning on-the-go with your Android and iPhone devices. Walk into a restaurant and be able to express your desires to the serving staff ; express your destination needs to an attendant at a bus, train, or airline terminal; or just simply understand some of the language being spoken around you. In order to access the program, customers must be a registered borrower at an Army Family and MWR library with an established General Library Information System (GLIS) account. After logging into the established GLIS account (http://mylibraryus.fmwr.net ) simply go to “eResources/Research” then select “Transparent Language Online” from the “Popular Databases” to sign up for access. (After creating an account on “Transparent Language Online,” users can go direct to http://library. transparent.com/armymwr when using the service without going through their GLIS account.) Deployed Soldiers who have not previously registered at a Garrison library for GLIS services may register through the IMCOM, G-9 Library Program Office. At each Garrison, librarians are prepared to provide full instructional use of this tool although the tool is user friendly and easy for the selfstarter to initiate. Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Quest for Bodily Perfection by A.J. Jacobs Reviewed by Larry Cox Bestselling author A.J. Jacobs (“The Year of Living Biblically” and “The Know- It-All”) chronicles his two year quest to retool his body from a “mushy, easily-winded, moderately sickly blob” to a perfect specimen in his new book, “Drop Dead Healthy.” Think of it as a “Super-Size Me” in reverse. His first step was to compile a list of things he needed to do to improve his health. The list soon became a whopping 70 pages that included goals such as eating more leafy green vegetables, watching more baseball (since it lowers blood pressure), lifting weights, humming to prevent sinus infections and even winning an Academy Award, since he
read that Oscar winners live three years longer than nonOscar winners. Jacobs broke down his body into various parts, from lungs to stomach to brain to lower back and beyond. As his wife rolled her eyes and made occasional pithy observations, Jacobs trudged on, implementing a “Vice Diet” that included more chocolate, booze and coffee, since he reasoned that chocolate is high in antioxidants, alcohol is good for the heart in judicious amounts and coffee lowers the odds of certain types of cancer. He explored the benefits of “chewdaism,” chewing on food for up to 100 chomps per mouthful. He also added raw foods to his diet, learned portion control and figured out ways to eliminate as much sugar as possible. Part memoir, part adventure, part how-to manual, “Drop Dead Healthy” is laugh-out-loud funny and tests our culture’s assumptions and obsessions with what makes for good health. Brimming with data, photographs and a narrative that is both inspiring and witty, Jacob’s saga will have you laughing so hard it will flood your bloodstream with endorphins, making you feel healthier after just a few pages. It could be just what the doctor ordered.

You’ve probably seen his logo in advertising for events such as the FMWR Expo, Super Bowl Party at the Gateway Club or BOSS Chili Cook Off. If you frequent the Camp Casey USO, you’ve probably seen him roaming the hallways or participating in USO events. Yung Hui Nam, or Mr. Nam as most of his friends know him, has been a part of the Area I community since 2003, and it is obvious from the moment you meet him that his passion is not just for business, but for all Soldiers stationed in Area I. “Mr. Nam has contributed a lot of hours and money to ensuring Soldiers get the best,” said FMWR Marketing Specialist Soojin Atwater. Product Recalls Can Make Your Head Spin by David Uffington Only a fraction of defective auto, food and product recalls make it into the newspaper or the nightly news. Hundreds more occur quietly with consumers left unaware — unless someone is made ill or is injured. Here are some examples: —A prescription compounding pharmacy was notified by the Food and Drug Administration that sterile preparations it produced were contaminated with microorganisms and fungal growth. The preparations were for human and veterinary use. —Nine brands of dog food have been recalled for Salmonella, with 17 cases (as of this writing) of their owners being made ill as well. —An auto manufacturer has recalled certain models due to power-steering hose deterioration, which causes steering fluid to leak onto the catalytic converter. Due to high temperatures, smoke and fire can result. —Mushroom slices have been recalled because the mushrooms may be contaminated with the chemicals carbendazim, fluoranthene and pyrene. Carbendazim is a fungicide (which also was found in orange juice imported from Brazil earlier this year); fluoranthene and pyrene are carcinogenic toxins. —Organic baby spinach with the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella has been recalled. —An automaker has recalled one of its models because the diagnostic module can reset itself, 62
Warrior Country USAG-Red Cloud Family and MWR Magazine
which can lead to either accidental airbag deployment or the airbag not deploying at all during a crash. —Bagged salads have been recalled due to potential contamination by Listeria. The list of things that can harm us is long. Salmonella in papaya, dog food and sprouts. Spinning toothbrushes that overheat and melt, causing shock and burns. Undeclared milk in chocolate bars. Undeclared allergens in chicken, lasagna, turkey burgers and sausage. The best way to learn about recalls as they happen is to sign up for email alerts at all of the government’s sites: www.fsis.usda.gov — Food safety and inspection. www.recalls.gov — Recalls of consumer products, boats, food, medicine, cosmetics and environmental products. www.nhtsa.gov — Vehicle recalls, as well as the service bulletins, at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. Sign up for email alerts, and start by doing a search on the make and model of your vehicle. www.foodsafetynews.com — Keep an eye on Food Safety News for up-to-date information foodborne illness outbreaks and recalls. In support of the Army Family Covenant
Then Army Chief of Staff General Harold K. John announced the creation of the Army Community Services (ACS) on July 25, 1965. Later that year, he also issued a regulation outlining the procedures for establishing ACS centers on Army installations worldwide. Since that day, ACS has been a mainstay in providing services for Active Duty and retired Soldiers and their Family members ACS continues to play a significant role in the readiness and well-being of Soldiers and their Families. Because the needs of Soldiers and Families change over time, ACS has adapted to continue serving as a place where Soldiers and their Family Members can get their best start on “Real Life Solutions for Successful Army Living.” Today ACS provides services in the following areas: - Information and Referral –A Where-to-Turn when you need Information - Education and Training on Finances, Relocating, Job Research, Parenting, Couples Relations and Stress and Anger Management - Emergency Financial Assistance (AER) - Personal Assistance and Advocacy: Victim Support - Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) - Volunteer Opportunities - Passport Assistance And many more services…. During the month of July, join us in celebrating our birthday and years of service to 2ID and USAG-Red Cloud/ Area I Soldiers, Families and civilians. For more information, call 730-3107. IN THE ZONE
