Area I Soldiers, Civilians Spread Holiday Cheer
to Children and staff of Sonjaewon Orphanage
Story & photos by Chong, Sang Sop

USAG-Red Cloud and Area I, Family and MWR Magazine
The USAG-RC and Area I Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Department, with support of Area I Units, FRGs and private organizations, will bring holiday cheer to 26 orphans from the Sonjaewon Orphanage in Uijeongbu City Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the Camp Casey Warrior’s Club. “The FMWR Entertainment and Special Events Division initiated this special holiday program several years ago and was an instant hit not only for the orphans involved, but for participating Units and individual Solders who made it a memorable experience for everyone,” says FMWR Entertainment and Special Events Marenzo Domingo Coordinator Marenzo Domingo, Project Officer for the event this year. “Orphans will get to experience Christmas the way we would like our children to enjoy it,” Domingo says, “and at the same time they’ll have an opportunity to visit Camp Casey and meet U.S. Soldiers and civilian members one-on-one. This is truly a rare and special treat for
them. “Over the years we were able to make the event a holiday tradition, giving members of the U.S. community here an opportunity to reach out to a specific orphanage in Korea. These kids are extremely excited and deeply appreciative of the chance to celebrate the spirit of Christmas with our military community,” Domingo continues. “We’ll treat the orphans to a lavish holiday feast at the Warrior’s Club, provide them with live entertainment, have each child meet with Santa and receive a special gift provided by their Sponsor,” says Domingo, who has coordinated this event for the past three years. “Witnessing the reaction of each child as they open their gifts is priceless. Individual sponsors who help make it all possible are always deeply touched by the overwhelming response,” Domingo says. “Clearly, everyone involved shares in the Christmas spirit. It’s heartwarming to see so much joy in their faces, especially at this time of year” The 2012 ‘Adopt-an-Orphan’ program is available for individual Soldiers and adult Civilians interested in participating. Because a limited number of orphans are available for the program this year, sponsors are encouraged to sign-up early and are accepted on a first come, first served basis according to Domingo. “It happens every year. As soon as our Marketing Office begins promoting the event we start getting calls right away. It doesn’t take long before every orphan is assigned an Area I Unit, individual Soldiers or adult Civilian member of our community,” Domingo says. “I wish we could accept more orphans and more sponsors, but we’re doing the best we can. This is a win-win for everyone concerned.”
IN THE ZONE
19
Domingo noted that because the orphanage this year was only recently contacted, there are still many orphans who need a sponsor. “I know they will go fast, so I highly encourage anyone interested in adopting an orphan for the day to call us right away. I’ll be happy to provide sponsors with all the information they’ll need to make a difference in a child’s life,” Domingo says. The program requires each sponsor who adopts an orphan for the day to meet their adopted child, provide a meal and special gift, and have dinner with them throughout the entire program, which, in addition to a holiday meal, includes a live entertainment show and visit with Santa when each orphan is given his or her Christmas gift. Usually the orphans respond by singing selected Christmas carols and thanking their sponsors for their love and generosity. “This is by far my favorite special event project of the year,” Domingo says. “I think everyone involved feels the same way. It truly is special.” Sonjaewon Orphanage was founded in 1990 by Mr. Ji San, a devout Buddhist monk who continues to serve as the orphanage director. He is assisted by a full-time staff of four who remain at the orphanage 24 hours a day, along with a volunteer staff of seven who provide assistance on a periodic basis to help the children. “There was a time in the late 1980s, and especially at the height of the Korean economic crisis, when there were a lot of children abandoned at streets and temples throughout the country, left to fend for themselves by parents who, for one reason or another, could not, or chose not to, raise the children on their own” Ji San
Mr. Ji San

says with a sincere touch of sadness in his voice.. That’s when he decided to take care of the children himself, devoting the rest of his life to create an orphanage to give orphans a chance to live, dream and aspire like children everywhere. At first, orphans were gathered and cared for at a nearby Buddhist temple, but as years went by the temple became too small for the growing number of children. Ji San sought help wherever he could find it, worked hard and sought donors from throughout the community to eventually open the Sonjaewon orphanage. It was a huge undertaking, but Ji San says it had to be done. He is rightfully proud of his accomplishments. “Currently, there are 26 orphans, ranging in age from 10 month old infants to those who just turned 18, residing at the orphanage. The orphanage staff encourages a regular routine like most children do, wake up at 6 a.m. and return before 5 in the afternoon. They devote hours for studying then complete a series of daily chores before resting for the evening” Ji San says. For the most part, everyday life for children at Sonjaewon Orphanage is similar to those experienced by children everywhere, albeit, without the support of an immediate family member. As a result, orphans learn to rely on themselves with support from the facility staff and each other, from the moment they arrive until it is time for them to leave the orphanage. Ji San explains that one important lesson he tries to impart to each of the children is for them “…to never forget where they came from, and to help others who are in need.” As a testament to the quality of care and support they have

received at the orphanage, several children, through the orphanage support group and the generosity of others, have successfully accomplished their academic goals. Despite offers from prestigious companies, some have decided to give back and return to work at Sonjaewon Orphanage instead, to ‘help others who are in need.’ Anyone interested in getting involved in this year’s Adopt-anOrphan Program should contact Domingo as soon as possible due to the limited number of orphans available for sponsorship. Call Entertainment and Special Events Office at 732-9464/732-6760 or email marenzo.a.domingo.naf@mail.mil for more information on how to make this holiday season a memorable time for an orphaned child. Orphan in Need of Christmas Magic
22
USAG-Red Cloud and Area I, Family and MWR Magazine
Shin Hyun Jun is an 18 month-old handicapped child, orphaned when barely 5 months old, who needs help. Abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, helpless relatives brought the infant to the Sonjaewon Orphanage, hoping they could provide and care for baby Jun when nobody else could. Due to his medical condition, the staff immediately took him to a hospital for help. After a lengthy examination, doctors had to amputate the limb above the knee to prevent further complications. Doctors must now change Shin Hyun Jun’s prosthetic leg every 6 months until his growth has stabilized, which will take years. Replacing his prosthetic leg each time is expensive, particularly for the staff and volunteer members who operate Sonjaewon Orphanage. Shin Hyun Jun can use, and would certainly appreciate, a little Christmas magic. If you or your Unit may be interested in helping out, please call 732-9464 or email marenzo.a.domingo.naf@mail.mil for more information. Arrangements will be made to have you or your KATUSA representative meet with the orphanage staff.

Inventing Elsa Maxwell: How an Irrepressible Nobody Conquered High Society, Hollywood, the Press and the World by Sam Staggs
Reviewed by Larry Cox Elsa Maxwell was short, overweight and had the face of a bulldog. Think J. Edgar Hoover in drag, and you get the idea. Born in 1881 in Keokuk, Iowa, as a girl she moved with her family to San Francisco. One day while looking out the front window of her home, she saw something that would literally redefine her life. Neighbors were preparing an elaborate wedding, an event her parents were not invited to attend. As Elsa watched the activity, she vowed that someday she would host the most extraordinary parties in
the world, inviting whom she pleased, regardless of their wealth and stature — and that is exactly what she did. When the facts of her life didn’t measure up, she chose narratives that did. Elsa often claimed that she had been born in a box at the Keokuk Opera House during a performance of “Mignon,” but in truth she entered the world in a bedroom at the home of her maternal grandparents. Even the year of her birth is confusing, since early in her life she shaved two years off her age. Elsa was an ambitious, talented woman. She found work as a singer, actress, author, gossip columnist and songwriter, but it was her talent as a professional hostess for royalty and high society where she established an international reputation. She thought outside the box and devised outrageous themes for her parties. In addition to inventing the scavenger hunt, she sometimes required men to dress as women for her events, and vice versa. Author Sam Staggs documents the unlikely story of a woman who professed that her fame was “not bad for a short, fat homely piano player from Keokuk, Iowa, with no money or background, who decided to become a legend, and did just that.” All I can add is ... only in America. 6th Grade Home Alone Training The USAG Red Cloud and Area I Home Alone Supervision policy states that a youth shouldn’t be left unsupervised if they are not at least in the 6th grade. However, parents know each child/youth is different and some older children shouldn’t be left alone. Before leaving students in grades 6 and above at home alone, parents need to make sure that their youth is mature enough to be on their own. CYSS offers Home Alone Training to assist students in making the right decisions when at home alone. We provide guidance on basic safety rules and ways to handle various situations should they arise when no adult is present. By increasing their comfort level, it helps ensure that they have a positive experience. Reservation required. Please call Parent Central at 730-3628.
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Meetings Attend Parent Advisory Committee meetings to learn more about CYSS programs and share your ideas to improve programs for your child. In addition, learn how you can earn point every time you volunteer for CYSS programs. Once a parent has accumulated 10 points, 10% off monthly child care fees available. The time and locations are announced through the individual programs. For more information, call 730-3625.

Good vs. Bad Debt by David Uffington Not all debt is bad. In spite of our being encouraged to clear all debt so that we don’t owe anything to anyone, there are some types of debt that are good and can add positively to our quality of life. The two key steps are to invest only in good debt, and to keep good debt from turning into bad debt. Mortgages are considered good debt, and it’s the biggest debt most families take on. It’s not likely that anyone can save enough to buy a house for cash. Mortgages allow families to buy their own home to live in and enjoy and to (theoretically) build up equity. Turn a good debt into a better debt - pay it off more quickly by making extra payments. Even $100 a month extra can shave years off the end of your mortgage. Where mortgage debt becomes bad is if you take on more than you can handle. Late payments lead, at the very least, to increased fees and penalties. Taken to the extreme, late payments can result in bankruptcy and ruined credit. Other examples of good debt (that which will appreciate or gain value down the road) are
education loans for college (greater earning power), business loans (greater business-building power) and home-equity loans for needed improvements (increase the value of the home). Bad debt is debt you incur for anything that won’t gain in value or that has only a momentary value, is disposable or is incurred for things you don’t really need. Vehicles are considered bad debt because vehicles never gain in value. You lose value the minute you drive off the dealer’s lot. However, vehicles are necessities. Make the largest down payment you can to keep your payments small, and then pay extra on the loan to pay it off quickly. Nearly anything you put on a credit card makes it a bad debt. Don’t charge things of low value unless you’re going to pay off the balance at the end of the month. Meals out, groceries, oil changes, vacations and clothing are bad bets to charge because they’ll never gain in value and are disposable. The rule of thumb is: If it doesn’t gain in value, try to pay cash. IN THE ZONE
