Family Compass exists to build healthy families and a strong North Texas community by preventing child abuse and neglect. Family Compass was established by local Exchange Clubs in 1992 to support communities in preventing child abuse and generating hope for the future. Over the past 23 years, we have provided life-altering services to more than 44,000 parents and children. Our core programs, Community Outreach and Education and Home Mentoring Services, work together to infuse communities with the tools, support and information necessary to build stronger families and protect the innocence of childhood. In 2015, Family Compass realized our strategic goal to expand our reach throughout North Texas. This year of growth brought about many positive changes for the agency, such as ensuring all programs have bilingual staff, implementing a car seat program, increasing community awareness of parenting best practices through exciting, new education partnerships and establishing a strong presence in home mentoring services across both Dallas and Collin County. Our focus continues to remain firmly on prevention because every child deserves the opportunity to simply be a child. family-compass.org | Annual Report 2015

“For families who lack resources and knowledge the path forward may be uncertain and unclear. Family Compass steps in as a model, a coach, a sympathetic ear, a teacher, and a guide, working to create a space for families to find their way down a new and different path. The critical information we provide and the relationships we build light the way and forever change the trajectory of the lives of the families we serve. When families are given opportunities and offered better tools they are able to thrive and cycles of poverty, abuse and neglect are forever broken. The collaborative effort of our staff, board, volunteers and donors allows us to embrace every day knowing our work makes a life-altering difference for future generations.” — Ona Foster, LMSW-CEO “Child abuse all too often results in life-long mental and physical health problems. These emotional scars can be avoided, productivity enhanced, and millions of dollars saved if efforts are directed to preventing abuse rather than simply treating survivors. That’s exactly what Family Compass has been doing for almost a quarter of a century. And we do that extremely well, using only evidence-based programs and highly trained, dedicated staff. As we expand to reach more families, we are extremely fortunate to be led by our outstanding new CEO, Ona Foster. She brings a wealth of experience and new ideas to Family Compass. On behalf of the Board, I thank you for your support of our mission, one that is vitally important to North Texas.” — George Holden, Ph.D.— President-Elect

Sarah’s Story:

PARENT AIDE HOME MENTORING PROGRAM
4
family-compass.org | Annual Report 2015
Sarah entered the Parent Aide Program in 2015 seeking help for her 4-year-old son, Donovan, who was showing aggression towards peers and teachers. Donovan was also struggling with a speech delay, temper tantrums and toilet training. Sarah was concerned that her son was having severe difficulties as a result of witnessing domestic violence in her relationship with her husband, even though she was separated from him. Through the support of her Parent Aide case manager, Sarah accessed services for her son to address his speech delay and behavioral problems. Donovan has made tremendous growth in these areas both at school and at home. Sarah has learned to use positive parenting strategies and to refrain from physical discipline. Donovan is also receiving play therapy, which, combined with Sarah’s new parenting methods, has helped with his aggression and anger. Additionally, Sarah has learned to not blame herself for the domestic violence perpetrated by her husband and is working on patience, empathy and self-care during her home visits with her case manager.

family-compass.org | Annual Report 2015
Grace was a 14-year old student in middle school when she found out she was pregnant. With no family support because of an abusive childhood and no assistance from the baby’s father, Grace doubted that she would finish middle school or be able to raise a child on her own. She was socially isolated and felt abandoned until a teacher reached out and referred her to the Growing As Parents Program. Grace’s Family Support worker became her champion, mentor and lifeline. She had been so stressed and debilitated by anxiety that she had not received prenatal care. The Family Support worker immediately helped her find an OB/GYN and through weekly visits, helped her prepare to be a mother. Grace now has a healthy baby girl, has graduated middle school and plans to go to college to become a dental hygienist. Her daughter is developmentally on target and Grace has become a proactive and determined parent who provides a safe and supportive home for her daughter.

on utilizing consistent, positive parenting practices.
Angela was a single mother with two children and a third on the way when she was forced to live at Family Gateway’s supportive housing complex due to homelessness. In response to her anxiety, stress and feelings of loneliness, a friend referred Angela to Family Compass. She joined a Triple P parenting group session and was able to open up about the stressors of caring for her children, particularly her son who often threw loud tantrums to get his way. Angela expressed fears that she would react aggressively towards her children in her stress and wanted help in how to parent more positively. In the Triple P Program, Angela realized there was hope in handling her son’s extreme behavior. She worked with a group facilitator to try new strategies of dealing with her emotions, taking control as a parent and learning to praise her children. She successfully completed the Triple P Program and after giving birth to her third child, she decided she needed more intensive strategies to manage her stress and bond with her three children. Family Compass referred her into its Parent Aide Program where she has grown in her knowledge of positive parenting skills and her children are doing well in school. They are thriving as a family!

Family Compass offers seminars and classes to increase awareness of child abuse, promote positive parenting practices, prevent shaken baby syndrome and sudden infant death syndrome, and learn effective co-parenting strategies for parents that experience divorce. Educational classes are offered in conjunction with the jail system, multiple school districts, non-profit organizations and child care agencies.
Deborah’s Story:
COMMUNITY EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Deborah is a 21-year-old mother to her 5-year-old son, Eduardo. Deborah heard about the Triple P group parenting class in Plano near her home and, eager to learn new skills for addressing her son’s behavior without using physical discipline, she signed up for the course. She learned to use behavior charts to help her son manage his behavior at school and was able to see that her use of physical discipline influenced the way her son handled situations at school, leading him to lash out and hit other children when he did not get what he wanted. Throughout the course of the program, Deborah learned how to build on her parenting skills and worked on various practice tasks to try with her son. She reported success with using time-out and saw a decrease in aggression in Eduardo at school. Deborah also signed up to take the Family Compass “Families First” co-parenting class to understand ways to establish a better co-parenting relationship with Eduardo’s father, with whom she shares custody. Eduardo’s father, who visits with him on the weekends, ended up taking the class as well so he and Deborah can provide the support and structure their son needs.
