How To Choose The Best Volunteer Activities For Your Family By: Sandi Schwartz

V

olunteering as a family is such a wonderful way to bond and to feel better overall. When we make others happy, we experience an amazing biological phenomenon called a “helper’s high” that is the result of our brain releasing chemicals called endorphins. We experience an energy in our body that is similar to the rush we feel after we exercise. These positive feelings make our kids happier and healthier by reducing stress and anxiety and feelings of sadness, loneliness or depression. Finding the right family volunteer activities can be overwhelming at times. You may feel uncertain about what is expected and question whether your children can participate. It is so important that your children feel comfortable where you volunteer, get inspired by the work you do, and enjoy themselves. Without these three components, our children won’t reap all the amazing benefits of volunteering. Plus, we want them to love helping others so they continue to do so for a lifetime. When searching for the appropriate activity, consider the following priorities: Project Focus The first step is to brainstorm as a family to decide what types of volunteer activities you are interested in doing. Ask your children who they would like to help. Is there a particular cause they feel passionate about, such as feeding homeless people, making art for other children, helping animals, or visiting the elderly or sick? What interests, skills, and talents do your family members have? Do you prefer to be indoors or outdoors? Do you wish to work directly with people or do something quietly like painting or pulling weeds? The options are endless, so it is important to narrow down your choices and focus on projects that your family will get the most out of. Organization’s Mission Do your research before you sign up with a specific organization. Find out the group’s history and how it got started, the goals and mission, who its leaders are, and how it is funded. Check their website, search online for press coverage, and visit sites like www.charitywatch.org and www. charitynavigator.org. If possible, ask a current or past volunteer about the pros and cons of the organization. Getting a referral from someone you December 2019 FamilyFunInOmaha DIGITAL ISSUE

know is the best option, especially because your children will be participating. Location Next, you will want to make sure you search for projects that are close to home so you do not have to drag your kids far to volunteer. Check your local paper, call charitable organizations, or search online to find the perfect places for kids to volunteer in your area. Cost Although rare, check to see if there are any fees to volunteer. You may also want to consider any other costs involved like travel, equipment such as certain clothing required, or requested products or monetary donations. Time Commitment Decide how much time you have to volunteer. It could be once a week, once a month, or once a year. Start slow and gradually increase your involvement if the project is working out well. You may choose to volunteer with different organizations each time to expose your children to a wide variety of experiences. Age Range Guidelines Look for activities that your whole family can participate in. Before you commit to a project, check to see if there are any age requirements listed. It may take some hunting around, but you should be able to find age-appropriate options. Even babies can take part in nursing home visits, charity walks, and beach clean ups. Activity Expectations Before you show up, find out exactly what you will be doing. Will there be heavy lifting involved? Will you have to get down and dirty? Will the project be a boring and repetitive task that will make your kids annoyed? Make sure the activity is

something that your kids will actually enjoy before you invest your time. Safety No matter what, safety needs to come first when children are involved. Your kids may be scared to talk to strangers, so consider starting with familiar people and places. As they get older, you can start to venture out and expose them to more mature situations. Fun Factor Choose projects that involve your children in a fun way, but also teach and inspire them. Avoid topics and activities that are too serious and sad for young children. Be sure to engage with them afterwards and ask what they thought, and if they would be willing to do it again.

Christmas Traditions- Out with the Old and in with the New! By: Amy McClure

G

rowing up, every Christmas Eve my family would feast on spaghetti and meatballs. My grandmother had a secret meatball recipe and a 3-day, labor intensive sauce she would make. One year, we burnt the sauce and the next year we realized how easy frozen meatballs are. Sometimes traditions change, you want to start something new or you need to adapt old traditions to fit your lifestyle. It’s okay to release yourself from old traditions and start new ones. Perhaps you recently moved away from family, have young children, are merging two families or are just looking to start some new traditions; read on for some simple ways to make the holidays memorable! A Book a Day until Christmas Throughout the year, collect old Christmas books from thrift stores or library sales until you have 25 books, then each night in December, read a book aloud. It’s fun to end with “The Night Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve, and your favorite Christmas story on Christmas morning. It’s extra special if each family member wakes up to a book in their stocking. Elf on the Shelf or Mary and Joseph on the Move Elf on the shelf has grown in popularity the last few years. Not only does it capture the imagination of young children, but it hopefully helps with good behavior during the chaos of the Christmas season. For Christian families, the idea of “Mary and Joseph on the move” has grown in popularity. Mary, Joseph and the Donkey start at one end of the house and move a little closer towards the stable each night until Christmas; Jesus is kept hidden until Christmas morning. This can also incorporate bible passages, or any incremental retelling of the Christmas story. The Tree Cutting down a tree may be something you’ve done every year, but if it’s no longer working for your family, it’s okay to make the switch to artificial. There are so many options for artificial trees, and starting a tradition around decorating rather than cutting down a tree is fine. Traditions are meant to serve us, not the other way around, so if you’ve been eyeing those fake trees for a while, make the jump and don’t look back!

trampoline so we spray-painted the springs white and dressed them up into snowman ornaments. As an adult it’s fun to look back and see a different craft ornament from each year. Some years it was as simple as painted glass balls...don’t set yourself up for an elaborate Pinterest fail but start with something easy and attainable. Find Free Experiences The month of December can get so expensive with the decorations, parties, gift giving and other festivities leading up to the actual day of Christmas. Find traditions that are free or low cost. Maybe your family has gone to the Nutcracker ballet every year, but you are looking for something with a smaller price tag. Find a free concert, a high school choral event or a mall band concert to still get the experience of going to a show without the price tag. Or depending on the age of your kids, have a Christmas music dance party in your living room in pjs, with hot chocolate and blasting Christmas tunes. Looking at Christmas lights is always free, and try a special snack or drink in the car to make it memorable. Santa Sitting on Santa’s lap is a memorable yearly ritual for many kids, but what do you do when Santa is no longer age appropriate? Teach kids about the joy of becoming Santa themselves. Get your kids involved in doing little secret Santa deeds for friends, neighbors or someone in need. The month of December is a great time to help kids focus on those around them who could use a little joy in their lives. You don’t have to do anything elaborate, but perhaps your kids notice their classmate doesn’t have mittens, and you could find a way to secretly gift them mittens. The more kid-led the better, and you will probably be touched by the extent of their generosity. Regardless of what your traditions have been, don’t be afraid to try something new. Just because you do something one year does not mean you are bound to it every year for the rest of your life. See what works for you and your family, and you can always come back to old traditions or experiment with new ones. The point is to let the traditions help you make memories rather than stress you out.

Make Ornaments Some families get matching ornaments every year, but it’s fun to make a special ornament every year too. Growing up, we would make a dozen of the same kind of ornaments to give out to relatives. The ornament usually had to do with something from the year and involved recycled materials. One year, we had a terrible wind storm that ruined our December 2019 FamilyFunInOmaha DIGITAL ISSUE
