3 BENEFITS OF BUYING LOCAL FOOD FOOD IS FRESHER AND TASTES BETTER The closer food is produced to home the fresher and tastier it will be. That's because local produce is able to ripen naturally, instead of being picked early. Most produce in chain grocery stores must travel long distances. This means the food is often picked before it has fully ripened. Local foods however are picked at peak ripeness which makes them more flavorful and nutritious.

TALK WITH AND LEARN FROM AREA FARMERS You have the opportunity to ask farmers questions and learn about their farming methods first hand. This allows you to know exactly where your food is grown or raised. Some area farmers use little or no pesticides so the products are grown with organic methods including some farms with USDA organic certification.

SUPPORT LOCAL FARMS FOR A STRONGER COMMUNITY When you buy local, you not only get the benefit of delicious and nutritious food, but you also support your local community and help area farmers and businesses continue on for future generations. Purchasing local food is good for your family, good for the environment and supports local farmers. It's a win, win for everyone.

7 GREAT GAMES FOR YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP ALPHABET GAME A classic road trip game where players find words that begin with each letter of the alphabet on billboards, road signs, businesses, license plates, and more. Options: Play together or individually; letters can be anywhere in the word and do not have the begin the word; go from Z to A; license plates don’t count; or feel free to make up your own rules! CATEGORIES One person selects a category such as Restaurants, Food, Animals, etc. Each person then takes a turn naming items from that category that begin from A to Z. The first person begins with A, second person B, and so on. LICENSE PLATE GAME Another favorite game of ours! Participants try to check off all of the license plates from each state. There are free apps available or print off a checklist before you go. 21 QUESTIONS Someone thinks of something and you can only ask 21 questions to figure it out. Whoever guesses right gets to start the next round.

30 FamilyFuninOmaha.com | Summer 2020

CREATE A STORY The first person begins by telling a few sentences of a story. The next person then continues on and adds a few more sentences, and so on, until you have a funny, imaginative, creative story! DON’T SAY IT All of the passengers in the car think of five words that they will avoid saying during the road trip. Saying any of these words earns a point (You do not want points!). This game is the most fun when words used frequently on a road trip are chosen, such as “stop,” “eat,” or the driver’s name. THE NAME GAME Someone says a name (e.g. Alexis), and the next person has to say a name that begins with the last letter of that name (in this case S, so maybe Simon). The third person picks a name that begins with the last letter of the second person’s choice, and so on. No duplicates allowed, and they must all be real names. A more challenging version for older kids is names of places with the same rules.
