Businesses around town www.thefamilygrapevine.co.uk It has been something of a challenge to home-school two primary school children and produce two magazines, and the hope was that they might return to school at some point before the magazines needed to go to the printer, so that the last phase of proofreading could be done in peace and quiet... and here is how that panned out: We always need to decide upon the date on which we go to print well in advance. Usually we organise it so that we can deliver the spring issue in early March. This year, however, we decided to give ourselves a little bit longer before delivery to see if we could get an idea of how spring 2021 was going to look, in terms of the Places to Visit that would be open, and the Local Events that would be taking place. So back in January we looked at the diary and decided on a slightly later date to go to print - and so it was that, in a coincidence pretty typical of the way things have gone over the past 12 months, 8th March became the day that juggling work and home-schooling would get a whole lot easier as the spring magazines would finally be finished and go off to the printer and surprise, surprise, it was also the children's first day back at school... Discount Vouchers are unfortunately not back in the magazines just yet, but you will find Three excellent Competitions to win Family Tickets to local attractions and events. As always, many thanks to the advertisers who have placed adverts with the Mid Sussex Family Grapevine this issue. Please do support your local businesses; they are a very hard working bunch who have had a really rough time recently and, now more than ever, they would love to hear from you.

As many of you have already discovered, there is a new addition to the rows of shops in Burgess Hill; Scrapless joins the other small, independent businesses in the newly named ‘Martlets Square’. Scrapless is a low-waste refill shop, stocking an ever-expanding range of food, gifts, toiletries, cleaning liquids and kitchen products. Working with suppliers who share its eco-friendly ethos, and with no single use plastic packaging in sight, Scrapless’ key aims are to help local shoppers reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging in their shopping basket and to support a more circular economic system. Scrapless provide predominately organic food and cleaning liquids in a refillable format; encouraging customers to bring their own containers, buy new reusable ones in-store, or use one of our second-hand containers, kindly donated by customers and washed by staff ready to be reused. Not only does this help reduce waste, it also often helps to lower carbon emissions, food waste and costs. As well as refills, Scrapless also offers fresh bread, pastries and eggs, locally made gifts and sustainable swaps for your home. With one third of all food produced worldwide ending up as waste, this new way of shopping enables our community to fight against this worrying trend. Opening its doors in October 2020, Scrapless sits next to New Look and has seen thousands of forward-thinking and planet-loving locals come through the door to start, or extend, their zero waste journey. Meg King (aged 23) created Scrapless to provide a more sustainable, accessible and convenient shopping experience for the Mid Sussex area which revolves around a simple process; weigh the container, fill, then weigh again, buying as much, or as little, as needed. This reduces waste both in packaging and food the average person in the UK generates around 400kg of waste every year; that’s roughly equivalent to the weight of a grand piano! Over the years, with the increasing awareness of the environmental crises plaguing our wonderful planet, Meg felt it was time to do what she could to help our community make some changes. A report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation found that every year “at least 8m tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean - which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. If no action is taken, this is expected to increase to two per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050.” This is a first time business venture for Meg, and she wholeheartedly hopes that Scrapless will evolve into more than just a refill store for our local community. She hopes to see the shop grow and develop into an environmental hub for the community, hosting talks and workshops and organising litter picks and beach cleans. As a Community Interest Company, Meg is always looking for ways to expand and improve Scrapless, so that it can provide more of what our community needs. What would you like to find in store? Let Meg and the team know if you have any requests, or suggestions, and they will be happy to see what they can do. “You’ll be surprised how easy it can be to ditch the unnecessary packaging and make more sustainable choices, especially when we’ve done the hard work for you! We welcome anyone and everyone to come in and explore what changes they can make to help the planet. Take up the challenge and think outside the bin!”
Open during lockdown for all your refill needs, Scrapless also offers Click & Collect, local home deliveries, Terracycle collections and fresh fruit and vegetable boxes from Fruit and Veg Boxes Horsham, available to order online via their website www.fruitandvegboxeshorsham.co.uk Scrapless, Unit 25-29 The Martlets Shopping Centre, Burgess Hill Lockdown opening hours: Tuesday - Friday 11am-5pm, Saturday 9.30am-5pm, Sunday 11am-3pm, Every second Thursday 11am-7pm

'Hope begins' by Louise Hack of Whoosh Learning Hope begins – Louise Hack 2020 ... what a year. It was a year like no other. A year when a virus arrived and changed the world. It was a year of great sadness and worry but with the sadness came a breath. It gave the world a chance to stand still, to reflect and pause from our busy lives. We need to remember and never forget and embrace hope for the future. Because sometimes out of great sadness, grief and pain comes a glimmer. This is the story of that glimmer and of how goodness was born and how hope began. ___________________________________ The virus arrived; the world stopped. Quietness surrounded us… People stayed behind closed doors Hiding away, waiting But time continued to gently pass… While the world stayed locked inside, Nature began to breathe. Spring had begun. The light was soft, mornings were calm and the birds could be heard. They sung louder – reminding us to listen…to wake up. So, we did. Over the weeks, more people stepped into the light of each new day, Clinging to hope. Hope of new beginnings. We started to listen, to watch and take time to really notice. We realised we had lost some of the greatest gifts of all – time, being grateful and finding joy in all the little things that unfold around us each new day. Time became our friend. We gained time to breathe in the clean, fresh air and enjoy daily walks in nature. We started to listen to our world and connect. For while we may have stopped, nature was only just beginning. And with this beginning came hope. In the heat of the days, We relished the shade of the leaves above us. We listened as the trees gently spoke as their new, fresh, lush green leaves rustled above us. Birds were busy flitting in and out of the tall trees, Searching for food as their babies tweeted in the distance. It reminded us that life was beginning again.
With time, patience and love for our natural world. Our gardens were full of promise. Families had time… time to talk, time to play and just time to be. Spaces to breathe and reflect in, became important and valued. It brought us closer together. People gave more time to those around them We learnt what it meant to really help, support and look after each other. A new community was formed Neighbours became close Door step gatherings, two metre chats and distanced hugs were felt. No longer would we pass by without saying hello. Together we clapped for our heroes. We felt their strength but also their sadness. Their tears and their smiles were hidden Their stories were kept silent… protecting and shielding us Yet their kindness shone from their eyes. We longed to sit with each other, hold hands, laugh and watch our children run free. Life was hard but time continued to pass Day after day … lessons were learnt inside, With parents becoming teachers. We were locked away, Safe behind closed doors We continued to grow, evolve and resilience shone through. The tears were still there, family and friends were still missed, But we found new ways to move forward. Friendships grew and love seemed stronger. Laughter could be heard again and gently with a new softness, smiles were reborn. The world must never forget the year 2020 The year of the rainbow - a symbol to always remember. We lost a great deal but new beginnings came. Out of the darkness came a new light. Things can be better, can change and repair. The world can heal but we need each other to grow. As the world speeds up again Take a moment to pause and reflect. Relish each day and the new beginning it brings. Let the light back in, throw open your doors Be patient, be kind, hold each other close and love.
Time is now our friend again … and time will help us heal. A new world is awakening, We may have felt lost but A new love of nature was born. The sun will rise stronger and brighter With each new shoot bursting through the damp, rich earth, The light continues to shine Came hope. Gardens became our lifeline showing us that new beginnings New hope will begin. can happen.

At Honeybees we strongly believe that our children thrive in an outside environment. With the resources that nature provides, we can plan for their next steps and enable our children to take on skills, during play, such as resilience and independence. Please do come and see us, meet the Honeybees staff and children, and see what we can offer you and your child.

THOUGHT A PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION WAS FINANCIALLY OUT OF REACH? THINK AGAIN! Have you ever thought of educating your child at a private school, but discounted the idea because of the cost? At Cumnor House Sussex, an independent school based in Danehill, two free places are available to children currently in Year 3 at a Sussex Primary School. The opportunity covers the entire cost of a child’s education at private school for ten years, from the age of 8 to 18, and includes other activities such as sport, music, art and DT, as well as school uniform and school trips. To be eligible to apply, your child should be performing at the top of their class, and the places will be offered to children from families who could never afford to pay for an independent school education. Successful applicants join Cumnor House Sussex at the age of 8 (in Year 4) through to the age of 13 (Year 8) after which they will move on to one of Cumnor’s 16 independent senior school partners, subject to meeting the school’s entry criteria, where they remain until the age of 18. “We have seven Foundation Scholars who are already thriving within our school community,” comments Fergus Llewellyn, Cumnor’s Headmaster. “Our first Foundation Scholar will be moving on to join Hurstpierpoint College in September 2021 – a very exciting moment for us all.” Applications are open until Friday 16th April 2021. Please contact Cecilia, our Registrar on 01825 792 006 or registrar@cumnor.co.uk and visit our website www.cumnor.co.uk

Franchise For Sale www.thefamilygrapevine.co.uk The spring 2021 issue will be distributed just a few weeks prior to the anniversary of the start of the first Lockdown. The spring 2020 issue was the last 'normal' issue we printed before everything we used to take for granted changed completely. Over the past 12 months the Family Grapevine Group have trialled a number of variations on the usual printed magazine; we have had online-only issues, because there was nowhere open to distribute paper copies from, some Editors have produced a number of regular digital newsletters, and now we are seeing how a bumper spring issue combining neighbouring areas will go down with readers. If you enter any of the fantastic competitions, please let us know your thoughts in the 'comments' section. Many thanks to the advertisers who have placed adverts with the Crawley & Horsham Family Grapevine this issue. Please remember to support your local businesses; they are a very important part of the local community and, especially after the last 12 months, they would really love to hear from you.
