I am so delighted to be back at work-yes really! Throughout the last months I have towed the line, adhering to rules and regs, and have stayed healthy. As with many other people, I have missed the company of my family and friends and it will be some time before that gets back to normal.

The summer 2020 issue had to be online only, but it presented a great opportunity for me to be able to support my regular advertisers with free advertising. I really hope it helped those businesses and also kept the Family Grapevine name a little buoyant. You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again…please support your local small businesses. The Family Grapevine prides itself on producing accurate and comprehensive information, however the circumstances these last months have made it very difficult to keep all information checked, so please bear that in mind if you happen to come across a wrong number or information. What should you do? Tell me! I will do my best to get the correct information and that way I can also update it for other readers. Most listings are printed in this magazine and all are on the website. Particularly difficult to keep up to date are the contact numbers for toddler groups (these listings are on the website). Even if the number has not yet been updated, the listed contacts will be pleased to hear from you and pass you onto someone else as necessary. Keep an eye on the website for events. Sadly these are a little thin on the ground, but the list is gradually being added to. Wishing you all a healthy and happy few months, Genevieve Arlidge - Editor Grapevine Media Works Ltd., Company Registered in England No: 5428774 Tel: 01372 209200 Email: genevieve@thefamilygrapevine.co.uk Web: www.thefamilygrapevine.co.uk/mid-surrey

A selection of free listings are in this issue and all are online www.thefamilygrapevine.co.uk/mid-surrey FREE listings - we have always taken security and accuracy of personal information seriously, but after the introduction of GDPR it is imperative that information we hold is verified and updated. We do this as an ongoing job, but please check your own listing, in print or online, to ensure all information is correct. If we leave you a message checking your free listing and you don't reply, the information may be deleted. This is FREE advertising for your business or group - don't lose out for the sake of a return phone call or email!

September was my goal to start work again and fortunately this has gone well. I am most grateful for the ongoing support of advertisers. The trials and tribulations of 2020 will be a talking point for a long time and I very much hope that 2021 will be a serious improvement.

Santa’s Workshop is now open!

Dear Yara, Now it’s nearly Christmas, it’s time for the Elf Cup Final! This year it’s Candy Cane United versus North Pole FC. Can you spot who’s cheering on Candy Cane United?

Dear Olivia, how truly exciting, It’s your very first Christmas, this poem I’m writing! And also the reason for the tree’s decorated, The house looks so festive, everyone captivated! Your beautiful face has night, Day, your first Christmas Your first Christmas with stars shining bright! Look to the sky, filled what incredible joy, Christmas, first Your very first Christmas toy! In giving to you, your that you are here, We couldn’t be happier with my reindeer! But now I must fly away and we’re ready to go, You’re tucked up in bed, a HO HO HO! I’ll bid you farewell with

I heard you like having fun, Emma. We really love football here. But we play on ice, not grass. So instead of football boots, we wear ice skates! The ball is made of snow. And you score by kicking the ball between the giant icicles. Can you see who the referee is? So, your best friend told me you’ve been learning great things this year. Keep it up and now you’re bigger you might win an award, just like the winning team when they lift the Elf Cup! After the game, I’ve got one last present to put on my sleigh. It’s for a special child. Can you guess who? Well, it looks like Dasher is ready for kick-off. But who’s that charging towards the pitch on a sledge? They’re heading straight for Dasher! I’d better go and help!

Merry Christmas Olivia!

Merry Christmas!

Dear Elijah,

HOT CHOCOLATE

With Christmas fast approaching, we need to test all the toys. Even pet toys! Only the best ones get delivered on Christmas Eve! MINCE PIES

Look, can you see the toys for dogs, like balls they can catch? And, of course there are toys for cats too – like feathers that tickle! There are even toys for hamsters, like wheels that spin round and round! Gosh they make me dizzy! What’s Rudolph playing with? Can you guess what type of pet that’s for? Now you’re bigger, and you’ve been such a good child this year, we’ll deliver a special toy for you too on Christmas Eve. The elves are just making it now! I hope you’re excited to open it on Christmas morning! Before I get back to playing with…I mean, testing the toys, your best friend told me you’ve been learning great things. Amazing! They also said you love having fun, which sounds brilliant! Right, I need to find my hat. I’m sure I left it around here somewhere. Can you spot it? Merry Christmas!

Do you know what Heuristic Play Is? What is Heuristic Play? by Stacey Appleby @what_dorothy_does Play is the primary way babies and young children learn. Living in a western society means we have access to a large variety of commercial toys. However, why is it when we give our child a present they are more interested in the box? Could it be that this actually provides your child with a greater learning experience than the toy you just purchased? Children in less affluent societies do not have access to the same number of manufactured toys and will play with unconventional items. Research has shown that all children’s play is meaningful and the learning outcomes are equal if not greater when a non commercial product is being used. Children learn through exploration of their environment, using all of their senses. Commercial toys are often full of visual stimulus, but lack other sensory experiences. Eleanor Goldschmied the founder of heuristic play, stated that children cannot understand the world around them if they are not given the opportunity to feel it. The word heuristic is defined as ‘to discover or gain an understanding of’, meaning heuristic play is an opportunity for babies and nursery aged children to explore without active adult interaction. By using non commercial items, we create open ended play opportunities which nurtures children’s natural curiosities, as there is no set way to play with the object. If we go back to the box mentioned at the beginning, this could support children’s expressive arts and design development, as it can become a drum kit, a rocket or a house. Alternatively they could explore shape, space and measurements to see what can fit inside the box, developing their mathematical skills. The role of an adult within heuristic play is to source collections of items and provide uninterrupted time to play without distractions. As parents we want to help our children achieve, we frequently will turn a puzzle piece around so it fits, but their learning is greater if we allow them to freely explore. Heuristic play is totally child led, this allows them to think critically and creatively to find out what can be done with each object. Heuristic resources are individual and therefore will vary. Collections are not static and items can be changed throughout the year. Recently my daughter showed an interest in balls, so I created a basket of objects that rolled differently, including lemons, kitchen roll tube and a bobbin. Below are some examples of what you could use: • Wooden items: bowls, spoons, spatulas, boxes, large buttons, curtain rings, bobbin, wooden egg, mug tree, dolly peg • Cardboard items: boxes, kitchen roll tubes, egg box, sellotape ring • Plastic items: plant pots, costume jewellery, bottles, ice cube tray • Natural Items: pine cones, shells, citrus fruit, conkers, natural sponge • Textures: ribbon, hair roller, loofah, fur, leather, brushes, silk scarf • Metal items: tins, chains, jar lids, bangles, saucepan, cake tin, colander Resources will differ depending on the age of your child, be mindful of their developmental stages and check items for damage before use. Even though this is a child led activity, they should be monitored at all times to ensure their safety, but with limited adult interaction. Heuristic play supports the uniqueness of all children and we can provide it for free by using items we already own. We lead busy lives and are often engaging with our children or using independent play time as an opportunity to pop the washing on, however heuristic play provides you with the opportunity to sit back and watch your child learn. You will see their thought process and how exploratory play puts in the building bricks of learning. Also you can have that opportunity to drink your coffee whilst it’s still hot!! Follow us on Instagram @What_Dorothy_Does for more play ideas and message us with any questions. I really hope you have found this inspiring and interesting and mostly have a chance at enjoying heuristic play with your little ones!

Returning to school post-Covid-19

The following advice can help put them at ease: Write it down Encourage them to write down worries and anything they’re excited about. Urge them to show the list to a trusted adult (could a parent/carer or teacher) so they can help them. Talk about lockdown A lot has happened while they were off. They might have started to feel down or even lost friends or family members. Talking about it can help. Let your feelings out There are plenty of tools on the Childline website to help children and young people express what they’re feeling when they can’t find the words. Visit childline.org.uk and try the mood journal or art box. Take your time It’s going to take a while to adjust to being back at school. It’s ok if it doesn’t feel comfortable at first. Once they’re home from school, make sure they do something each day that they enjoy. Volunteer Childline counsellors are available online and over the phone, free and in confidence by calling 0800 1111 or visiting www.childline.org.uk

Whilst you may have a stash of board games at hand to while away those holiday evenings, nothing beats a good old-fashioned game of Charades! It is great entertainment for all ages, played at any time or place. You might even host a virtual game this year, as we are all Zoom-savy now! The key to a successful game is to tailor it to the age and skills of your players. Younger children will love to act out easy subjects they’ll be likely to guess too: • Everyday activities • Animals • Sports • TV characters Cinema, Book, and Song Titles are the traditional choices for older and wiser players. But why not go for Catchphrases or Advertising Slogans, the dafter the better. The only rule is simple – no talking, just miming – and let the hilarity begin!

www.thefamilygrapevine.co.uk/mid-surrey

Games for Juniors+ After Eight Race Game If your players don’t mind getting smeared with chocolate and losing all dignity, this game is for them. Line up two or three kitchen chairs and get your players comfortably seated. Place an After Eight slice (out of it’s envelope) on their tilted foreheads. The first to eat the mint by sliding it down their faces (no hands) is the winner. Gurning... and tears of laughter ensue!

Are You There, Moriarty? Two players are blindfolded and given a rolled up newspaper. They then lie on their fronts, head to head with a metre or so gap between them. The starting player says Are you there, Moriarty?. When ready, the other replies, Yes. The starting player then tries to hit the other with their paper weapon – after their attempt, it’s the other player’s turn. Once hit, they are out and someone else takes their place. Spectators can cheer them on!

A scrumptious Chocolate Log Who doesn’t love a Chocolate Log at Christmas! Even better when it is home-made with your little elves’ help! For a more grown-up treat, replace drops of vanilla essence with a little measure of liqueur to taste. Ingredients

For the cake • 3 medium eggs • 85g golden caster sugar • 85g plain flour less 2 tbsp • replace with 2 tbsp cocoa powder • ½ tsp baking powder For the filling and icing • 50g butter, plus extra for the tin • 140g dark chocolate, broken into small pieces • 1 tbsp golden syrup • 84ml pot double cream • 200g icing sugar, sifted • a few drops of vanilla essence to your taste • icing sugar and rinsed holly sprigs to decorate – ensure you remove any berries beforehand

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Butter and line a 23cm x 32cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Beat the golden caster sugar and eggs together with an electric whisk for about 8 minutes until thick and creamy. 2 Mix the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder together, then sift onto the egg mixture. Fold in very carefully, then pour into the tin. Tip the tin from side to side to spread the mixture into the corners. Bake for 10 mins. 3 Place a sheet of baking parchment on a clear surface. When the cake has slightly cooled, tip it onto the parchment, peel off the lining paper, then roll the cake up from its longest edge with the paper inside. Leave to fully cool. 1

To make the icing, melt the butter and dark chocolate together in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Take from the heat and stir in the golden syrup and 5 tbsp double cream. Beat in the icing sugar until smooth. Whisk the remaining double 5 cream until it holds its shape. Fold in a few drops of vanilla essence or liqueur to your taste. Unravel the cake, spread the cream over the top, then carefully roll up again into a log. 4

Cut a thick diagonal slice from one end of the roll. Lift the main log on to a plate, then arrange the slice on the side with the diagonal cut against the cake to make a branch. Spread the icing over the log and branch without covering the ends. Then using a fork, drag along the icing to make a tree bark texture. Finally, scatter with unsifted icing sugar to resemble snow, and decorate with holly.

L HOO SC

On 16 October 2020, the Royal Kent School Oxshott (RKS) commemorated the founding of the school over 200 years ago. The school was named ‘Royal Kent’ as it was set up under RKS the Patronage of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, who lived in nearby Claremont and his sister, the Duchess of Kent and mother to the future Queen Victoria. 1820-2020 In addition to the school’s Royal Founders, and thanks to social media and local press coverage, several Alumni have contacted the school. Many have left fascinating accounts of XS their time at RKS via the school’s digital Alumni guest book. These accounts date back as H OT far as 1937 and provide great insight into how the school has changed (or not) over the last century. To commemorate this milestone, each of the current RKS classes have produced a canvas to represent different aspects of the school and their memories. These will be displayed around the school as a lasting reminder of the bicentenary. In a tradition thought to be started by the Victorians, RKS celebrated with a birthday cake. A vanilla cream Victoria Sponge cake to be precise, and several other changes to the usual school day. Since the beginning of term, pupils and staff have been learning about the history of the school and the local community. This culminated in some Victorian inspired workshops on 16 October in partnership with the Elmbridge Museum. Classes swapped iPads for Victorian slates, and ink pens and pencils for chalk, as they learnt what life would have been like for those first pupils starting Royal Kent 200 years ago. Before the Victorian era, most of Britain’s population could not read or write and had limited access to education. Queen Victoria believed that education should be for all, and by the end of her reign, going to school became compulsory for all children, rich or poor. Improvements in education meant that more people could enjoy reading. Children’s books were no longer just for learning, they were fun! New titles such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Treasure Island and The Jungle Book became hugely popular, as they still are today at the RKS school library. Brickmaking was an important local industry in Oxshott and Claygate. The arrival of the railway in the 1840s meant that bricks could be transported by train to London, as well as enabling local families to travel further and quicker than ever before. As well as reflecting on the past, RKS are now looking to the future. As Katie Hancock (Headteacher) reveals “Respecting and maintaining the school’s unique ‘family/community’ is key to everything we do, whilst making the most of our special location at the heart of thriving Oxshott. We look forward to celebrating our bicentenary year with the wider community throughout the year (guidance permitting), and opening the latest addition to RKS, a nursery for a new generation of pupils in January 2021.” https://www.royal-kent.surrey.sch.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------------The Royal Kent Church of England School is a happy and high achieving one form entry school in the heart of Oxshott, Surrey; the school has had a presence in the village, albeit in a different building, since 1820. We are an inclusive Christian school for local children, and we welcome families of different faiths and cultures. All children benefit from our strong links with our parish church St Andrew’s. Staff, pupils, and parents are very proud of our school, its heritage and values. Our school motto is 'Learning for Life' and we aim to equip our pupils with the skills and attitude to continue learning throughout life and develop them, in partnership with parents and the community, into independent, caring and creative adults.

6 Walking Games This Spring, make going on a family walk fun by introducing a game or two to the proceedings: Fox & Chickens Find a clear area between two trees or large bushes. Nominate a ‘Fox’ and everyone else as ‘Chickens’. The Fox stands in the middle and tries to catch all the tasty little chicks running between the two trees. Once caught they have to help catch the others. The last Chicken to be caught gets to be the next Fox. Catch a Colour Think of a colour and shout 2 it out for your children to find an object in that hue. Start with easy-to-find colours such as green and yellow before you move on to the much rarer blues and reds. The person who ‘Catches the Colour’ first gets to choose the next one. Find a Mini-beast On your walk, turn over 3 stones, logs or piles of leaves as you go to see what’s hiding underneath. It is easy to find all sorts of bugs and beasties. Take a magnifying glass with you for a

really good look and snap a few close-up photos on your phone for later examination. Shadow Tag An ideal game to play in 4 the cooler months when shadows are long. Nominate someone to be ‘it’. When they step on another’s shadow, the owner of the tagged shadow become ‘it’ – repeat until exhausted. Scavenger Hunting Before you start, set down 5 a list of objects you think you might find on the way: an acorn, a smooth pebble, a red leaf, a fir cone, a wild flower, a feather... Add to the list, if objects are scavenged too quickly. Small treats could be awarded for the best objects found! Family Chains Two people hold hands and 6 start to chase the others. Those they catch have to join their chain. Play until everyone is caught and linked up.

Valentine Suncatchers

Indulge in a little craft with your children during the first weekend of February half-term and make these attractive suncatchers, celebrating love on Valentine’s Day. You will need: • Stiff red paper or card and tracing paper • Sticky back plastic/coloured yarn/heart-shaped doilies • Tissue paper shapes, sequins and other flat decorations • Water colour paints • PVA glue Make a frame by tracing the shape onto your card – just fold a sheet of tracing paper in half and draw two half hearts against the fold, one inside the other. Use a craft knife to cut out your frame. Fill the centre with one of these three ideas: 1 Place your frame on a piece of sticky back plastic and trim off the excess. Since the plastic is sticky it won’t take much pressure to apply their decorations – great for younger children. 2 Paint some doilies with watercolour paints, allow to dry and then glue the edges to the frame. Add some decorations to the whole. 3 Carefully pierce the frame with a darning needle and then thread coloured yarn across the frame and decorate.
