MID SURREY • WINTER 2020

FOR ALL ACTIVE OVER 60s LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL Online

• Things to do • places to go • Hobbies • Support • and more...

In This Issue Welcome to the winter Silver Grapevine! No sooner had the magazine got off the ground, Covid-19 overtook our lives. I was unable to print and distribute a magazine in the summer and unfortunately this is still the case. This online version can be downloaded and printed off for reference. With the ever evolving situation, it has been difficult for me to know how to move forward. Although we have had the green light to start getting back to normal in some respects, restrictions on meeting places and numbers in groups, means that much is still on hold. Advertisers in this magazine have been linked to their respective websites, so all you have to do is click on the advert web address to be taken to the individual site. The listings are from pre COVID days and many people are still waiting to resume their businesses. This needs to be taken into consideration as you look through. If there is something that interests you, make contact with the advertiser for up to date information. Wishing you all a healthy and happy few months,

Over 700 useful contacts!

Local Businesses/Services............3-5 A - Z Leisure ...............................6-20 Help and Support.......................21-23 Independent Living............. ......24-27 Contributors........................ 28-29, 32 Places To Visit...........................30-32 When I started researching activities for this magazine, I was taken aback by how much is on offer. It makes the thought of the next stage in life really quite appealing! There is something for everyone. It could be volunteering at an organisation dear to your heart, learning a new skill or maybe a language to help you on your travels. Importantly this magazine lists services and organisations that offer help and support. No one need feel alone, but if you do, look through the list and you will find someone very willing to listen and provide support. Please tell your friends about the Silver Grapevine. Stay well. A - Z Leisure: Tennis - Volunteering Covid 19 – Telephone Support – Please Help Us With Covid cases rising this autumn, The Brigitte Trust continues to grow its telephone support service. We offer emotional support to any adult in Surrey who is vulnerable, lonely, isolated, bereaved or a carer needing regular support at the end of the telephone line. Referrals are rising and we are close to capacity. We need more help. How you will join us. We’re running courses every month on Zoom so new volunteers can quickly join our emotional support service by phone. Suitable volunteers will complete an

application form, join two 90-minute training sessions on Zoom, and have a full DBS check. Ongoing support will be available to you from our experienced team. We’re looking for volunteers who are good listeners, with time to spare for people truly in need of a friendly voice. Could that be you? A - Z Leisure: Walking Groups - Yoga Elmbridge Covid-secure healthy walks We've been organising healthy walks and Nordic walks for Elmbridge residents since 2003. Our walks are free. They are of varying distance and pace, lasting from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. They occur all around the borough just about every day of the year. The Elmbridge Healthy Walks are part of the ‘Walking for Health Ramblers’ scheme. As such, they are classed as organised outdoor physical activity and continue to be exempt from the ‘rule of six’ in accordance with the Covid-19 government guidance. However, our walkers’ and walk leader volunteers’ safety are of utmost importance to us and we have put in place measures to ensure participants can still enjoy being active in a Covid-secure way. We have also made the decision to have a fixed number of participants on our walks and spaces must be booked in advance. This number will vary depending on the preference of the walk leader and the number of leaders attending. We are still welcoming new participants on the scheme. We think that walks are a good way to keep on the move, get together with friends, old and new, be outside and explore your community. Our programme of November walks is now available online. To book a space on a walk, or for any other queries, please contact us via email health@elmbridge.gov.uk or call 01372 474574. We look forward to seeing you.

Help & Support Sight for Surrey face mask exemption cards Sight for Surrey is fully committed to supporting people in Surrey who are blind, partially sighted, Deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing, especially during these different times where the wearing of a face mask is mandatory in enclosed public spaces. For people who are Deaf or with hearing loss and use lip reading, wearing of a face mask can have devastating consequences leaving them unable to understand and communicate with people around them. Sight for Surrey has designed a series of exemption cards that give an explanation of why an individual is not wearing a mask that can be printed off and worn or displayed. Bob Hughes, Chief Executive of Sight for Surrey said “we have read and seen stories of Deaf people being abused by members of the public for not wearing face masks. We want to protect all the Deaf and hard of hearing people in Surrey from this abuse and hope these exemption cards will relieve the anxiety and pressure for Deaf people when out in the community during these times.” Sight for Surrey is a charity offering a lifetime of support to people who are blind, vision impaired, Deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing. To download an exemption card visit www.sightforsurrey.org.uk or to get one sent out in the post to you, email communications@sightforsurrey.org.uk

Mole Valley Life Welfare Calls During the period since lockdown began, the Mole Valley Life (MVL) team have been working hard to make sure that our vulnerable and older residents have remained connected and looked after. We have made over 14,000 welfare calls, assisted over 400 residents with food parcels, made arrangements for 600 residents to receive their prescriptions and signposted 100 vulnerable and older residents to local community groups and befriending services; in so doing, providing vital help and reassurance at an uncertain time. Over the past months, we have thoroughly enjoyed supporting the vulnerable and older in our district and have built up great friendships with many of those whom we have made welfare calls to. If you, or someone you know is in need of help, please call the Surrey Community Helpline phone number on 0300 200 1008 (Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm and Saturday and Sunday: 10am to 12pm), or the NHS Responder Service phone number on 0808 196 3646 (7 days a week, 8am to 8pm).

Reg. charity 288923

When you’re feeling alone or sad, our volunteers are there to listen. As Covid cases rise this autumn, Brigitte Trust telephone support volunteers are standing by for any adult in Surrey who is vulnerable, lonely, isolated or a carer needing a listening ear. It’s sometimes easier to talk to someone just a step away from the family circle who will listen without judgement. Maybe you have been recently diagnosed with a life-limiting illness like cancer or Motor Neurone Disease, and are awaiting tests or surgery, or struggling with depression and anxiety. We are there for you. It’s hard to stay calm during these unsettled times when restrictions can mean families are divided - especially for older people with existing health conditions. May we help you, or someone you love? A volunteer makes 2-3 calls each week to the same person – sometimes checking in but mostly spending time building a relationship and making a connection with someone vulnerable, struggling through uncertain times. Please call us.

Langley Vale Wood, near Epsom The largest of the Woodland Trust’s four First World War Centenary Woods, Langley Vale Wood has pockets of ancient woodland, diverse and fascinating wildlife and flora, and stunning views over the hills of the North Downs. History of Langley Vale Wood There is evidence of early human habitation in the woodlands and fields making up the site of Langley Vale Wood. A first-century BC tin coin was found in a field near Round Wood, and third and fourth-century Roman coins have also been found in and around the site. There are several Saxon cemeteries dating from the sixth to eighth centuries in the area. There has been a farm at Langley Vale since the early thirteenth century. It’s likely that the small farming settlement was destroyed by the Black Death in the fourteenth century as it disappeared from the records. Later maps show that part of the site was used as arable land from the mid-eighteenth century and there are also several woods shown: Great Hurst, Little Hurst, and Round Coppice. By the early 1800s, the farm had become part of the Ashtead Park Estate, although it was sold off in 1880.

During the First World War, the Walton and Tadworth end of the site was used for army training and there were trenches, a rifle range, a gas training school and a camp. A timber flag pole from the gas training school is still standing in Round Wood, which was known locally as Gas School Wood. Wildlife and Habitats Look out for signs of roe deer and badgers, and keep your eyes peeled at dusk when you might spot one of the five species of bat recorded at the site. Enjoy the chorus of birdsong – 59 species have been recorded at the wood, such as the cuckoo and skylark.

Trees, Plants and Fungi The site’s three biggest woods- Great Hurst Wood, Little Hurst Wood and Downs View Wood - are designated Sites of Nature Conservation Importance. Keep an eye on the facebook page www.facebook.com/WTLangleyValeWood for all up to date news.

Elmbridge Museum - ONLINE Online exhibitions bring history to life during lockdown During lockdown, the Elmbridge Museum Team has developed a range of online exhibitions on various historical topics, using photographs and artefacts from the collection. They are constantly adding to their online offering, to provide a fascinating glimpse into Elmbridge's rich local history.

What’s on? ‘Objects of Empire’ - The Museum Team has selected 20 artefacts from the collection to explore Elmbridge in the time of the British Empire. At its peak, the British Empire occupied 26% of the world territories, but nowadays very little remains. Its history has always been challenging and contentious and has been under fresh scrutiny in recent years and months. Yet from its foundation, the British Empire has influenced virtually every aspect of historic life and its impact can still be felt in our local societies. Available online and at Walton Library. A Day at The Races –The historic sport of horse racing not only holds a unique place in British culture, but in Elmbridge's landscape. Discover the ups and downs in the stories of Sandown and Hurst Park over the ages. Available online and at Thames Ditton Library. Look Back in Anger – Elmbridge streets, properties and empty fields which are now peaceful and serene were once arenas of opposition. From Digger occupation to Suffragette arson and beyond, discover the variety of ways Elmbridge has been used as a stage for popular protest movements over the ages. Available online and display at Cobham Library. To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, Elmbridge Museum also launched two online exhibitions this year; ‘Elmbridge at War’ and an exhibition created in partnership with St Charles Borromeo School offering us the opportunity to view WW2 through the eyes of today’s school children. The above online exhibitions including interviews and curator’s talks can be viewed at elmbridgemuseum.org.uk/online-exhibitions/ Get in touch! The History Of Epsom Clock Tower Back in the 1700’s, the area where the Epsom market place and clock tower now stand was a pond. Adjacent to this stood a Watch House and gaol along with the town stocks. In 1847, the Watch House was demolished and on its site, the building of the clock tower commenced.

Epsom1897

For the first seventy years, the tower’s base was a square structure where the town’s horse-drawn fire engine was stored; the clock tower bell was rung as a fire alarm to summon the fire crew. In the mid-1920s the ground-level building was extended to provide public lavatories and an information kiosk. This wasn’t the first change, the clock tower originally boasted four stone heraldic lions. These were replaced in 1902 by electric lanterns, which in turn were replaced in the late 1920s by globe lights, removed in 1990. The last major work to the clock tower was in 2003 when the clock face was renovated and the public conveniences converted into retail units and market storage. In 1897 the townsfolk gathered by the clock tower to sing God Save the Queen, for Victoria’s Jubilee. The tower was in scaffolding for repairs, and the bell had been removed. To everyone’s astonishment the chimes at midday were clearly heard. This was widely reported in the media and led people to believe that the tower had a ghost! All public events in Epsom have revolved around the clock tower. Particularly noteworthy were the 1902 coronation (when an ox was roasted at the foot of the tower), the Silver Jubilee of 1935, the Coronation of 1937, VE Day, the Queen’s diamond jubilee and the borough’s 75th anniversary celebrations. A wonderful point of interest in an historic town.
