Classes on:- Tuesday 10.30 am and Thursday 10.30am and 2.30pm Contact Irene on 01372 729733 E: createwithikebana@gmail.com W: www.Ikebanawithirene.com I have been learning Ikebana since 1984 and teaching since 2005. I have always been in the Art world, starting in Fashion after my Fine Arts Degree. Ikebana is now my Art appreciation after a long busy career. It is the right time of my life to embrace Ikebana. It is relaxing, therapeutic and rewarding. It is not just arranging flowers and branches in a vase. It is creating and expressing your inner self in a form of a floral arrangement. It is like any Art form, like painting, sculpture and pottery. I love to teach and my passion is to introduce, encourage and to show people, male, female, children and adults of all ages to enjoy this form of Art. I practice the Sogetsu School of Japan. It was founded by Mr Sofu Teshigahara in 1927 in Japan. Today there are thousands of schools, spread all over the world. I am a member of the Sogetsu School London Branch and sit on the Board of the Ikebana International. Article by Irene Moore, Ikebana Sogetsu

Chatty Café Have you heard about The Chatty Café scheme? Squire’s Garden Centres joins this scheme. The Chatty Café is a great way of encouraging people to talk to others. The scheme is the brainchild of Alexandra Hoskyn, who founded it after a miserable day out where she noticed that no one was talking to each other. Alexandra said, “The Chatty Café is thrilled to welcome Squire’s to our scheme. Their lovely café bars are a perfect setting for Chatter & Natter tables. Anyone can join in and chat over a coffee – if you’re on your own, in a couple, with a friend, young people, old people and anyone in between. It’s just about having good old fashioned human interaction and the relaxed environment of Squire’s Café Bars will hopefully allow for lots of happy chatting!” Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres commented, “In this age of social media it’s so important to make an effort to talk to others face to face. So for those who would like a bit of real social interaction simply sit at a ‘Chatter & Natter’ table at Squire’s and you can talk to other customers. I believe a short conversation with another human can really brighten your day. There will be Chatter & Natter tables every Tuesday morning at Squire’s Café Bars, plus other days throughout the week too - simply look out for the signs on the tables. www.thechattycafe.co.uk www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Silver Grapevine Distribution Areas The full list of towns and villages covered in the printed magazine and on the website are listed below: Ashtead, Bookham, Chessington, Claygate, Cobham, Downside, Effingham, Epsom, Epsom Downs, Esher, Ewell, Fetcham, Hersham, Hinchley Wood, Horsley, Leatherhead, Molesey, Ockham, Oxshott, Stoke D’Abernon, Stoneleigh, Thames Ditton, Walton on Thames, Weybridge and Worcester Park.

Meet Nikki Vine and Genevieve Arlidge I started the Family Grapevine group of magazines in 1995 when my son was 6 years old. Almost 25 years on I have decided that I would like to provide the same sort of service for the active over 60’s as I am now one of them myself.

In 1997 I joined Nikki as an editor of the Family Grapevine and still love publishing this magazine in the Mid Surrey area. I was brought up in Cobham and have watched the ‘village’ and surrounding areas change and evolve over the years.

I am aware that it is sometimes difficult to find things to do that includes our age group and it is easy to feel isolated.

Now as I speed towards 3 score year and 10, I feel it’s time to branch out from the young focus of the Family Grapevine and add another string to my bow!

My hope is that the magazine will help you to find activities, classes, places to go and events so you can continue to have a fun and active life.

Nikki and I have researched information for Silver Grapevine with renewed vigour and interest and are very excited about its future.

Please get in touch and let us know what you think about our new magazine. Which sections do you like, what can we add next time? We look forward to hearing from you

Volunteering • Education

Volunteers help guide visitors in the house, work on conservation projects and carry out vital administrative work. They get their hands dirty in the gardens and work on the estate to help protect wildlife and woodland. There’s even a team working behind the scenes – mending deckchairs, filling potholes, creating installations for children’s trails and more. Some of the volunteers at Polesden Lacey have shared with us why they dedicate their time there. For Sue, a volunteer in the cut flower garden, it’s about teamwork: “Camaraderie at its best is what volunteering means to me”. Penny has volunteered at Polesden for more than a decade: “It’s given me the chance to meet a wonderful variety of people. I’m lucky to be able to wear a beautiful Edwardian costume for special events, which really brings the place to life and is always great fun.”

Polesden Lacey, a National Trust property nestled within the Surrey Hills, was the weekend party house of Edwardian socialite Dame Margaret Greville. Mrs Greville left the property to the National Trust for ‘the largest number of people to have enjoyment thereof’. Today the team at Polesden Lacey work hard to extend that welcome as widely as they can. It wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of more than 850 people who volunteer their time for the charity.

Looking for your next adventure? “Volunteering at Polesden Lacey never fails to lift my spirits, there are opportunities galore. Keith went to a volunteering coffee morning with his wife: “I always had a desire to be a better gardener, so wandered over to the ‘gardening’ table. It seemed fascinating and I thought Mondays would be a whole heap better in the garden at Polesden Lacey than at work.”

Elmbridge Volunteer Centre, Central Surrey Voluntary Action, 01372 463587

Franki volunteers in the gardens as well as putting her theatre skills to work, creating costumes: “This summer’s highlight was reincarnating Harry Smith, Mrs Greville’s Head Gardener, explaining to groups of children what working as a gardener in Mrs Greville’s time meant and how important the gardens were to her.

Don’t Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth! This proverb is based on the fact that a horse’s value is determined by his age, which, in turn, can be roughly determined by an examination of his teeth. The message conveyed is that a gift should be appreciated for the thought and spirit behind it, not according to its value. St. Jerome (400AD), who never accepted payment for his writings, first used the phrase in reply to his literary critics. His exact words were reputed to be “Never inspect the teeth of a gift horse.”
